Our LMFF Guest Blogger Cat Woods gives us the lowdown on the final two runway shows she attended at the festival. From the quirky and fun designs shown at the 'Frankie' runway to the edgy and much-anticipated 'Independent' runway, check out her re-cap! L'Oreal Paris Runway presented by Frankie Magazine

Gorman's collection was cute without being over the top or cheesey. It was simply sweet, uncomplicated and gorgeous. I loved the black mid-length skirt adorned with a geometric print that looked like autumn leaves and their black tunic which was perfectly fitted with pockets at waist height, well-hidden amongst the folds. They also

Jolet was right at home next to Gorman. Twists and pleats were smart and stylish, prints embraced botanical wonderfulness and the strategically-located cut-outs were clever and not too revealing.

I do love a floral print so Limedrop had me hooked from the first piece to the last. Prints featured super-blue skies with cotton-ball clouds, colour-saturated flowers in multi-hues and accessories to die for.

Of course. Karen Walker does intelligent, sensitive design so well. Her colour palette was rich and bold – burnt orange, foresty greys and greens, khaki and fawn. There were plenty of gorgeous geometric shapes and I loved the slouchy feel to the jumpers and coats. Who says fashion can’t be comfortable?

Pastel pink, I love it Kuwaii! From tunics in this blossom shade to jeans that were candy-floss cute, this is a label for the girls who don’t dig androgyny. This is 100% girl territory! Sure, there’s black and white, teal and pale grey, but I am still dreaming of that perfect pink.

The peplum is going nowhere according to Leonard Street. Loved their belted jackets, dresses and slim-fitting pants in ruby and grey. Their gorgeous green cocoon jacket and thick scarf will be a must when the wintery weather hits.

I’m not sure what the secret is, but Secret South should be on the lips of Melbourne fashionistas from here on because this collection was beautiful. I could just as easily see the clever prints and draped shirt-dresses in editorial photoshoots as I could at any chic bar around town. Strategic and flatteringly-placed digi-prints and a palette of deep orange and multiple shades of blue. Don’t keep them a secret, your wardrobe will thank you. ;) Independent Runway The two things Melbourne really excel at came together at the Independent Runway – fashion AND live music! World’s End Press provided a live accompaniment to the edgy, super-hip styles paraded down the runway by independent designers presenting directional, exciting and thrilling collections to see up-close!

One Fell Swoop revealed pieces that experimented with process, style and technique. This is the art and craft you WISH you were good at! Their garments draped gorgeously in a palette of black, white, grey and an unexpected and welcome gold to add sunshine. Dare I say, their designs invoked the word “intelligent without sacrificing wearability at all.

Strateas.Carlucci paraded superbly tailored pieces that had gothic, military influences. The fabrications were amazingly fitted and functional and not the faint hearted.

Pageant has dared to flirt with costume-like elements and curious fabrics and styling. It was flamboyant, fascinating and totally fun.

I was really anticipating From Britten, knowing they had been announced the Tiffany & Co National Designer of the Year award for LMFF only days ago. The devil is in the details here – none of their pieces scream "Look at me!" Rather, they have presented top-grade staples in luxe fabrics. Well-placed pockets and buttons will appeal to the busy man who wants to impress from the street, to the office, to... well, anywhere.

Garth Cook could just as easily be presenting his pieces on the runways of Paris or Milan. His pieces cleverly blend different fabrics and textures and cleverly contrast form-fitting with voluminous, sheer with solid. The cuts flattered the feminine form and revealed just enough skin without crossing the border into “must have Jen Hawkins trainer before you dare to wear territory.

Livia Arena has designed for women who want quality luxurious classics that go the distance. These are not single-season styles. Her laser-cut leather skirts were beautiful, both from a distance and bang in front of me. I especially loved the black leather, perforated shirt matched with wide-leg pants.

Tettman.Doust's collection took the trophy for Best Use of Print for me. It looked sophisticated and highly technical, while accentuating the cut and tailoring of dresses, draped tees and an amazing, cosmic-print bodysuit! If you told me these girls had sought design assistance from alien masterminds, I would believe you. Did I mention their amazing harem-pants in black and cobalt? Sigh.

Trois is a label that KNOWS we love leather. And sporty streetwear that looks chic and can go effortlessly from uni to cafe to bar. I particularly loved the pleated black above-the-knee skirt. If Vogue had their own netball team, THIS would be the uniform. Their monochrome geometric print cape had the front row women ogling with glee.

Zhivago's collection was gothic-inspired, rockstar-worthy and had one of the must-see statement prints of the show. The overall feel made me think "Military Girl meets a sultry Wednesday Addams post high-school". Black, silver, black, black and black. Oh, and a slash of burgundy leather for good measure. I would love to see Rihanna in Zhivago – and perhaps we will... Have you seen Cat's wrap-up of the Sportsgirl National Graduate Showcase? Be sure to check it out here.
