Are you up for a Roman Treasure Ramble? On Sunday 21 September the 2nd Roman Treasure Ramble will take place in and around Barry island. The challenge is a team event open to Cub Scouts, Scouts, Explorer Scouts, Brownies, Guides and Ranger Guides and each team will help raise funds for the Scout and Guide Community Project at Llandough Hospital and the Friends of the Heritage Coast. In return each team member will get an interesting day of challenges and receive an authentic solid metal reproduction of a Roman Phalera (campaign medal) of the 2nd Augustan Legion (shown above) that probably built and manned our start and finish point for this challenge. Numbers will be limited so it will be a first come first served basis for entries. To register an interest please contact Martin at scouts@catvog.org or Joey at cubs@catvog.org More details and entry forms will follow shortly.

Musings on Adult Recruitment. By Marc Cattle Groups that talk and actively engage in recruiting, every week, every chance, have more success than those that try it once and use the lack of result as an excuse. Even if you don’t need adults now, you will in the future. Recruit them when you can, now, for later. Write down the last time you talked to someone about volunteering. Was it over a week ago, over a month ago, longer? How much has changed in your life and their life in that time? Go and ask again… Talk to people, all the people, all the time, about joining. One group in Cardiff has (between September and December) recruited one beaver leader, one assistant scout leader and four section assistants. All but one of them from internet adverts. Adverts work, if they didn’t there would be no advertising. Where are your adverts? Groups that have an active internet presence, web, facebook, twitter, etc.. Seem more attractive. No-one swims to a sinking ship. Is your offer/request attractive? You might want/need them, do they want you? If not, why not? Adult recruitment, it’s a seven day a week, fifty-two week of the year activity. Not just when you need someone urgently. If you are not constantly doing it, maybe because you think your Group doesn’t need it at the moment, then your Group is already dying, from the inside out.

u o y r o f s Update Activity Quartermaster

The Area Activities Team is looking for a Quartermaster to provide care and maintainance of the Area Activity equipment. If you think this is for you and you would like to be a member of the Activities Team, please see the Role Description on the Area website and contact AAC (Activities) Steve Evans on 07897 405 335 or activities@catvog.org for more details.

Get involved in Scout Community Week 2014 Taking place from 2-8 June 2014, Scout Community Week not only gives us the opportunity to tackle real issues with the community and raise funds for local Scouting, but it’s a chance to promote and champion all the inspiring things we do during the other 51 weeks of the year. By teaming up with B&Q, Groups have benefited from the resources and support offered by their local store. Whether it is fundraising in-store or help with skills and tools, B&Q has enabled many Groups to make their community projects a real success. Full details at: scouts.org.uk/communityweek

Beaver fun day 200 hundred Beavers Scouts took over a local primary school for the East & South District Beaver Fun day. Each Beaver took part in a mixture of activities from abseiling to Crime scene investigation themed tasks which resulted in every Beaver going home having completed a badge. The Beavers taught the adult a thing or two about what you can do on power point for the I.T badge. The leaders also got time to pass on their skills to the Beavers on the adventure badge by using the areas brand new climbing kit enabling some to complete their first abseil. It was an awesome day all round. All the young people went home happy and sleepy. They all got to try new things and learn new skill. There is no way the day would have been such a success without the help and support of all the adults and young people who made it happen. Thank you to all. Joe Holmes

11th Barry Sea Scouts On Sunday 11th May groups within the Barry District will be holding their St George’s Day Service at St Mary’s Church, Holton Road, Barry. Since this year coincides with the centenary of the start of World War 1 we will be remembering all those scout members who fought and died during that campaign and others since. This year also sees the 11th Barry Sea Scouts celebrating the 90th anniversary of their founding by S A (Boss) Evans. As a mark of respect we will be laying up our original standard. This standard was originally presented to the group by the brother of Private Sydney Copp who died in September 1918 at Mis – en – Artois, Northern France. Private Copp lived in Victoria Park Road, Cadoxton, Barry with his parents before enlisting with the London Middlesex Regiment. After laying up the original standard we will then have our new standard blessed at the service.

Happy Birthday

Photo of the month :

11th Barry Sea Scout Group recently celebrated their 90th Birthday along with 147 past, present and future members of the group. Gilwell have the group registered as forming on the 26th November 1941 though there is evidence that the group was operating in 1924 and possibly even before the start of the First World War in 1918.

Headquarters Website All members are strongly recommended to view their personal details shown on their Backpack record / membership services. As a result of forwarding material for the Area Training Weekend I have found that a number of entries shown in the Personal Information window of a members Backpack record are incorrectly recorded.

East & South Nights Away

This is particularly so with regards to email addresses. For Leaders undergoing the Wood Badge training I take a direct lift of the email address shown and place it into my address book. If it is incorrect then that Leader will not be receiving any of the Training information I am sending out.

Well done to the East & South District, who so far this year have achieved : 249 Beaver nights, 863 Cub nights (including cub camp), 477 Scout nights, 705 Adult nights and finally 325 Explorer nights away!!

Similarly you will not receive any of the HQ information sent out from Gilwell. If you have not supplied an email address, please consider doing so as it enables information to be forwarded to you so much quicker - and cheaper.

http://www.scoutswales.org. uk/events/all-wales-scoutcamp-2014

You are therefore advised to check the personal details recorded in your name and either edit the entry or if that is not possible then forward an email request direct to HQ. The Training Team would be grateful if any updated information can also be forwarded to Denis Hunt, Training Administrator for his records. It has also been noticed that many members who are students have a warning sign against their personal address indicating that postal mail has been returned as 'not known'. Please update your personal record when you move house. Visit https://members.scouts.org. uk/supportresources and click 'Sign In' at the top. If you are not registered for this service, you are able to as long as you know your membership number. Denis Hunt Training Administrator Email: training.admin@catvog.org

Minibus Permits All Scout Groups, Districts and Counties who operate (own, borrow or hire), a minibus require a Standard Bus Permit so that voluntary groups can charge or accept a form of remuneration for providing transport for their own members, without having to comply with the full PSV operator licensing or PCV driver licensing requirements. New Minibus permits are valid for five years and have the expiry date written on the permit (looks like a tax disc). It is the responsibility of the individual Group/District and County to renew these minibus permits. Permits issued under the previous scheme (those with no expiry date) will ceased to be valid on 6th April 2014. New permits can be purchased via the Scout Info Centre at a cost of ÂŁ5.00; there is information on the Scout Association website with FAQs and an application form.

Again contact Richie Phillips for details.

Nights Away permits Dear Scouter, Nights away things you might not know. Those Scouters who hold a nights away permit: Check your profile on backpack and see if you have had modules 16 and 38 added to your training record. If this has been done then all is well but if not take your nights away permit along to a training night [details of time and place on CATVOG website] or email Denis Hunt who will update the records and so long as you ask nicely! Those Scouters who do not have a permit and think you might like to get one: We wish to introduce a mentoring system to help you get a permit. If you send me your contact details we will arrange for a nights away adviser to help you over a period of time gather together the knowledge and records needed to make a successful nights away permit application.

The objective is simple, nights away is a fundamental scouting activity for all young people in the movement and the more permits we can award the more likely more scouts will get a nights away experience. I really do look forward to hearing from you so send me your details. If you decide you do not want to apply for a permit after looking into the matter then that is fine as well. Any other questions you might have about nights away or help you might need then please contact me. Sea Scout HMS Dragon Visit Last year the Sea Scouts group of Barry District became affiliated with HMS Dragon a the state-of-the-art Type 45 Royal Navy destroyer. Over the last 2 years the scouts of the sea scout groups have been invited to have tours around the ship in Cardiff and also down in Portsmouth, this is to show what Naval Life is all about. HMS Dragon was back in the UK after a 8 month deployment and after a short time in Portsmouth HMS Dragon sailed into Liverpool on the 7th March until the 10th March. The ship was opened up to various VIP's of Liverpool and also various youth members from different organisations from Liverpool. As part of Barry District Affiliation we had an invitation to come up to Liverpool and spend 3 days on the ship travelling from Liverpool to Portsmouth. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for the 3 leaders from 1st Barry, 5th Barry & 6th Barry Sea Scout Group, so we travelled up to Liverpool to join the ships crew and learn a more indepth insight of Naval Life onboard a Navy Ship. Once we got onboard the ship we were welcomed by the Captain, who informed us that we had free run of the ship for the next 3 days. We followed a structured programme where we were shown, The Bridge, Operations room, The Galley, & various other areas of the ship, we also received various talks on board including what weapons they use & Fire equipment. The highlight of the trip was watching the Lynx Helicopter take off from the Flight deck and make several flight passes while we were on the deck before flying off to Yeovil. A couple of hours later the new ships Helicopter called a wildcat approached the ship and we watched this again form the deck and seeing the skill of the pilot maneuver the helicopter onto the flight deck was fantastic. Another highlight of the trip was being on the bridge at various times of the day and night and seeing how the officers work alongside the Captain. This whole experience was amazing and a great insight into Navy Life which we did experience while onboard. We learnt new skills from the crew and they were also intrigued into what Sea Scouting is all about. We look forward to the ship docking into Cardiff in May for a couple for days and hopefully be able to bring more Scouts & Cubs to see the ship. A special mention must go to David Griffiths our Affiliations Officer, who looked after us and organising the trip and also must thank the Captain, XO, and the rest of the ships crew and officers who made us feel very welcome and allowing us to be on their ship. Chris Parsons
