TRI-N BULL SALE 9th Annual
CHAROLAIS 39 Years in Red, White and Tan Charolais
MONDAY, MARCH 18, 2024 - 2 PM ~ on the farm - Lenore, MB ~
9th Annual Tri-N Charolais Farms Bull Sale! Welcome to the 9th Annual Tri-N Charolais Farms bull sale! The number says 9 but its our 39th year in business!
Every day on this earth one can be thankful for your blessings. When you love what you do and work with people with similar values as yourself, it makes it even more of a blessing. I greatly appreciate mom and dad for allowing me to purchase their purebred cowherd and run the daily affairs of the ranch. Growing up with my father teaching me what cattle work in our environment and what doesn’t, has been extremely valuable information. Dad still helps me a lot with the bull sale and if you need his keen eye to go through the bulls for you give him a call. He knows the cattle as well as I do.
Merv, Joanne & Jesse
To all of you, our customers, and friends (far and wide), I'd like to thank you all for the strong patronage throughout the years. It’s you that keeps us in business! There’s a few of you that have been customers of ours for over 30 years! It is very humbling. If you are new, I always enjoy meeting you all and I hope our cattle work well for you. Be sure to introduce yourself sale day. In addition to our usual offering of yearlings, there will be a nice offering of powerful 2-year old Charolais bulls. Our operation was built by selling 2-year old bulls to the PFRA government pastures in the 80s and 90s. These bulls are not leftovers and were hand selected to be held over last November. They have never been offered for sale until now. They were grown out last winter, grazed on a quarter section all summer and brought in during the fall. Close to 40 years in the making, I am proud to offer you the LARGEST OFFERING of COLORED Charolais Bulls in Canada, if not even North America. We have bred these colored Charolais to be as good as any white bull in the land. We are proud to offer you some of the MOST INFORMATION that you will find in a bull sale catalogue to aid you in making your selection. The bulls in this sale have been sire verified through Quantum Genetix, have full carcass data, homo polled testing and the testing for the diluter gene in our homo red cattle. Complete performance data (BW, ADJ 205 and ADJ 365) is also provided. All bulls have been PA tested for the recessive gene disorder in the Charolais breed for those who breed Charolais bulls to Charolais females. These bulls will be semen tested and READY TO WORK! Again this year we are happy to have Ryan Hurlburt (Auctioneer), Dory Gerrard, Kolton Macintosh and Justin Carvey as our sales staff! All are professionals in the business and are some of the best people you will find. Feel free to call any of them or myself about the bulls. We hope to see you sale day. Bring your children to the sale as that might mean early retirement! I know it worked for dad. Thanks,
Jesse

2024 Tri-N Charolais Farms 9th Annual Bull Sale
A Humble Beginning (Reprinted from “The Changing of the Guard Sale” Dec 2021) The Nykoliation name is long standing and well known in the livestock industry and the Charolais breed throughout Canada and beyond for close to 50 years. The families’ humble beginnings started with Beaver Creek Charolais (Len, Marilyn, Gord and Micheal Nykoliation and families) being the first in the 1970’s. Shortly after, N7 Stock Farms (Gerald and Wendy Nykoliation and families) was established. The early days consisted of attending many female production sales with Merv’s brothers Len and Gerald throughout Manitoba and Saskatchewan. On one November day back in 1983, they attended the Dennis Toms Charolais Dispersal at the Virden Auction Mart. Miss DTM 18L, a 1979 born daughter of Mr. JN Cadet 83F entered the ring (consigned by Dennis Toms of Redvers, SK). When she left, TRI-N Charolais Farms was born! The third Nykoliation in the purebred Charolais industry. Today, well over 50% of the current TRI-N Charolais herd traces back to this first purchase. Cow families such as Prairie Rose, Creamsicle etc. all trace back to Miss DTM 18L. Beaver Creek Charolais were founding members of the West Man Breeders Group that were very active throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s. Through these sales Merv established his herd and later was an active consignor selling a few bulls and females in their annual bull and female sales held at the old Virden Auction Mart. Performance testing played a large role from the beginning in the marketing of bulls for TRI-N. From the beginning bulls were entered in the Northwest (Roblin) Bull Test Station and the Manitoba (Douglas) Bull Test Station. Many top ten gaining bulls and banner bulls were consigned. In one year, TRI-N won both Roblin and Douglas Test Stations. The same was repeated with Douglas and Yellowhead. Mervin was a founding member of the Yellowhead Bull Test Station in Neepawa and consigned every year until its ending in 2005. At this time, TRI-N consigned to the Cattlemans Classic Bull Multi-Breed Bull Sale in Virden with the other Charolais consignor Gord and Lisa Nykoliation of Beaver Creek Charolais. Merv remembers distinctly when the bull TRI-N Prefix 54Y was offered for sale in the 2012 Cattlemans Classic bull sale. Back in those days there was no Facebook to promote your cattle, it was word of mouth and people face to face talking about it. When Prefix entered, the sales ring was jam packed, the alleys plugged and standing room only outside. Everyone was trying to get a look at the bull! Pretty dang exciting for little old Cattlemans Classic Virden, MB! When the hammer finally fell Prefix went to Vikse Family Farm in Alberta and ended up being the highest priced Charolais bull in Canada that year. Interesting enough, a full sister to Prefix is the grandma of TRI-N Go North 2411H that sold this spring and ended up being the record high selling Charolais bull ever sold and bred in Manitoba history by public auction for $80,000! For ten years bulls were marketed through Cattlemans Classic. At this point Beaver Creek Charolais dispersed their cow herd. In 2015, TRI-N Charolais created their own bull sale at Heartland Livestock in Virden. In 2018, the bull sale was moved to the farm at Lenore, MB where it remains today. Merv and Joanne Nykoliation have two daughters (Tanis and Brittni) and two sons (Jesse and Curtis). In 1995, the family moved to the main farm on NW-25-12-25W1 after taking it over from Merv’s mother (Jennie) after the passing of his father (Michael) where all 9 brother and sisters were raised. The move went great and there were many family memories that were made. From the beginning, Tanis, Jesse and Brittni all took an active role in showing cattle in 4-H and the various Canadian Charolais Youth Association (CCYA) conferences throughout Canada. Two CCYA projects included TRI-N Prairie Rose 401P (The beginning of the Prairie Rose cow family) and KCH Malibu 1M (the grandmother of TRI-N Malibu 72B). Both kids fell in love with the CCYA program, and the annual summer vacation was planned around the CCYA conference and shows location that year. The kids are all grown up now. Tanis (Rob and grandkids Broolyn, Ashley and Hudson Boyd) reside on a grain farm in Rapid City, Curtis (grandson Damon) lives in Basswood and Brittni (Trevor and grandkids Hunter and Parker Morris) live in Melita. Jesse (with support of his partner Nicki) is involved in the daily affairs of the family farm and are in the process of taking it over from Merv and Joanne. He has grown his cow herd by purchasing Merv’s mature cow herd and plans to continue in the industry and hosting the annual bull sale for many years to come This sale represents the true “Changing of the Guard” from one generation to another. Close to half a century in the making by the Nykoliation family.

EPDS top 1% WW YW REA, 2% CW, 20% MTL and 40% SC After marketing SCX Jehu sons the last several years with great success, we sold him in the 2021 “Changing of the Guard” Sale for $245,000 and is being used by a group of breeders worldwide. Jehu 2 or “Jehu JR” (as we call him), has taken over his sires role. He throws the power and depth of the original Jehu, in a more moderate frame and stylish package. We feel the Jehu 2 sons are even deeper (hard to believe) than the originals with more hip, hair and possess a little more calving ease. This is the MOST CONSISTENT set of WHITE bulls we have ever had off a sire group. If you like one of them, you will likely like the other 12…They are dang good!!

“We have purchased several red and tan bulls and females from the Nykoliations over the past 6 years. The bulls have put a lot of thickness and performance into our cattle and the females milk well. These bulls have sired great red and tan calves that sell great at the market every year. Thank you Merv and Jesse for allowing us to do this.” ~Delvin and Char Walter, Walter’s Charolais, Minot, ND ~

Selected from Stipe Charolais of Oregon. Here’s a complete outcross to virtually all popular pedigrees today. The Stipe herd is a linebred herd that’s been doing there own thing for decades. A lot of length of body and hip in these sons with high ADJ REA. Unfortunately, we lost the bull to injury before I could get a picture of him. Pictured is a mid April son we plan to use in our herd to carry on these outcross, great carcass genetics. 558L - mid April son

“Adding the Red Factor Charolais to our Red Angus based herd has increased the vigor and growth of our calf crops without giving up calving ease. These calves come out sleek and long bodied and they don’t lay around to die. By the time you get the tag written out they are up and sucking. We have been very satistfied with Merv and Jesse’s bulls, as they are sound footed and good breeders. They also have very quiet dispostions and are always easy to work with.” ~ Ty and Sarah Neidhardt Richardton, ND, USA ~

Thank you, Dad. This is our 12th year marketing the Captain Morgan influence as we also owned his sire and grand sire. You will be hard pressed to find a bull that’s had as much influence in the North American red Charolais industry as Captain Morgan. What a legend! If there was a longevity EPD, Red Baron would top it! His dam is 15 years old and still looks great. She has a few years left in her yet! If you have been running Red Angus or Simmental bulls, and feel your frame is getting too small or need some added power and length, I'd highly recommend looking at a Red Baron son. They calve extremely well and grow! I'd put his daughters against any Red Simmental or Angus female out there. Great udders and built in longevity.

“We bought a Jehu 2 son from the Nykoliations in the 2023 bull sale (sight unseen). When we got him home, we were super impressed with the bull. He bred great! All but one settled the first cycle and had zero opens. The bull maintained his condition well and he throws moderate birthweights and lots of calf vigor. We’d definitely buy again!.” ~ Bluebird Valley Farms - Cole, Alyssa, and Kayce Kalev, Eckville AB ~

Homo Polled, Homo Red (Non-dilutor) 11 sons on offer Lots 27-37 EPDs top 10% MCE, 35% CE BW and 40% SC A legend here. Purchased from Bremner Charolais of Dauphin MB. He started at the bottom and moved to the top beginning his career on commercial cows before he saw heavy use in the purebred division. Theres not much more that this bull can prove! His sons have been topping our sales the past few years and his first daughters are work horses. Look at the book and see all the first calf Foundation daughters with Amplify calves! There will be even more next year that we retained for our two year old program. A bull that adds milk and great udder structure, strong foot and confirmation, depth of body, hip and style. Look at how smooth made these sons are. They are built for calving! If your cows are red, black, tan, white, green or purple- a Foundation son will pay dividends! Foundation 2-year-old daughter

Dam (203Z) produced until 12 producing many top females in our herd. Cow family traces back to my uncle Len Nykoliation (Beaver Creek Charolais) cow born May 16, 1970. 54 years of Nykoliation breeding!!
FUN FACT We believe a bull is only as good as his mother. We cull our cow herd as hard as our bull pen as we believe there is a correlation between the two. Our herd is constantly being assessed for udders, production, feet and docility. If a cow comes in open in the fall she is gone (no questions asked). Ulttrasound Data

From day 1 this bull had “the look.” We decided to use him on a few cows as a yearling. These sons are nowhere near the oldest calves in the sale, but they are some impressive. Every black cow we used him on we got a black calf. Great feet, unparalleled muscle and lots of style in this bull and his calves. We are anxiously waiting to see these calves in Gerrys herd!

EPDs top 4% WW, 15% Marb, 25% MTL, 30% SC, 35% BW CW and 40% YW Amplifys story starts back in 2010 when dad sold his dams sire (TRI-N Johnny Rocket 925W) to Circle Cee Charolais (AB). A Payday son off one of our best cows at that time. A few years later, we noticed a daughter who was doing great things there. I told myself “Some day I'm going to own a son of hers.” It only took 6 years! The cow is 13 years old and still producing. Amplify has sired the most impressive set of calves off first calvers we have had in years. They calve well and grow. You will have to travel a lot of miles to find a 4 year old red bull that maintains his condition so well and with better feet. His story has just begun!

“3 years ago, we began switching our bull pen to Charolais bulls for the simple fact the tan calves bring a premium in the ring. We have bought several bulls from Jesse and Merv over the past few years (all sight unseen) and found them to be sound, functional and affordable. They cross very well on our angus-based cows by adding thickness and length yet maintaining calving ease. We have been very impressed with the vigour the calves have at birth, they are up and going immediately. Merv and Jesse know their cattle very well and highly recommend their bulls .” ~Luke & Jenn Smith and family. Sundre, AB ~

2-Year Old Bulls Once again... we bring you a nice offering of powerful 2 year old Charolais bulls!!
Our operation was built by selling 2-year old bulls to the PFRA government pastures in the 80's and 90's. These bulls are not leftovers and were hand selected to be held over last November. They have never been offered for sale until now. They were grown out last winter, grazed on a quarter section of pasture and stubble until November before coming to the yard to get fed for the sale. This year we retained 30 young bulls for next years bull sale, so expect to see this division grow.
Please come early to view bulls on sale day as the two year olds will not be at the sale location. From TRI-N Charolais Farms- 1.5 miles S on Ravine Rd to Rivers Rd. 3.5 miles E

HEIFER BULL!! Purebred Red Angus sired off a purebred red factor Charolais cow. I specifically bred this cow to this bull to try to raise my own heifer bull for my commercial heifers. I decided not to retain any commercial heifers this year. In 3 years, I calved close to 100 heifers to this bulls sire and never touched one (due to size). On the cow’s side, Beaver Creek Country and MVY Xplorer were both great heifer bulls for us as well.

"We have purchased several bulls over the past years from the Tri-N Bull Sale for our purebred and commercial herd, all sight unseen. We are very satisfied with all of our purchases. The bulls are easy to handle, quiet and sound. Their calves are very vigorous at birth, and the cows calve with ease. Mervin and Jesse do a great job of getting them delivered, even when they have to travel halfway across the country. I would recommend these genetics and their great personalized service any day! Buying a bull here is easy. Thanks, and keep up the great job guys!" ~Mark and Tamy Frost, MRF Charolais. Kingsey Falls, Quebec~

2024 Tri-N Charolais Farms 9th Annual Bull Sale
65 Pick of the 2024 Replacement Heifer Pen! In 39 years, we have only sold 8 females by public auction prior to the “Changing of the Guard Female Sale” held December 2021. As part of our farm transition plan, every bred heifer and first calvers were sold. This left the nucleus herd of females that have produced many of the bulls that you admire every year. We feel this is our strongest set of open heifers to date. The pen consists of over 50 daughters of SCX Jehu 2, Stipe Montana Elevation, Jacks Foundation, TRI-N Red Baron, Poncho and Circle Cee Amplify. As cow families matter to us, you can select from any of them that call our ranch home. Prairie Rose, Creamsicle, Rationelle, Buffy, Monte Pyton etc. All these females trace back to the first cow dad bought in 1984 (Miss DTM 18L). TRI-N Prairie Rose 401P (the start of the cow family) is the highest milk EPD female in the Canadian Charolais Association many years running. Of the top 20 females in the CCA for milk, 8 are TRI-N females! Whether your choice is red, white or tan, you are selecting from a cowherd that’s been developed over the past 4 decades! Come for a tour and see the cows. We are excited to offer the industry this opportunity! ALL HEIFERS SIRE VERIFIED, PALPATED AND PA TESTED! "We purchased a dark red Captain Morgan son (sight unseen) for our ranch in South Texas for our herd of Brahman cows. We are very impressed with the bull. He slicked off and adapted well to our warm climate. The calves are really impressive and are extremely uniform and beefy. Jesse and Merv know their cattle well and was a pleasure to deal with. Great folks-great cattle. I'd highly recommend their red Charolais bulls on your Brahman cows!!" ~Philip, Nora, James and Stella Drake P-N Cattle and Hay LLC, Edinburg, TX ~
