The Bennett family at Knoll Crest Farm has been in the business of supplying bulls to our customers in Southside Virginia since 1944. Through those 76 years, our family has experienced many price cycles, droughts, cattle type pendulums, genetic selection innovations, technology evolutions and advancements, even a Covid-19 pandemic…
It is our belief that a primary component of quality customer service is understanding the ongoing needs of our customers…and producing seedstock that are functional, efficient, adaptable, “user friendly,” sustainable and, in culmination, profitable for the long haul. We are proud of the fact that we require our cowherd to thrive on hot fescue. Our focus includes breeding goals based on the fundamentals of producing balanced trait cattle that are backed by many generations of selection pressure.
INDUSTRY FOCUSED...…

SERVING OUR BULL CUSTOMERS SINCE 1944
When you buy a Knoll Crest bull, you do more than purchase an animal – you tie to a program.
Knoll Crest Farm is firmly committed to delivering service with each bull. We conduct our business in a manner that demands providing only the very best genetics for our valued customers. Along with “value-added” genetics, we provide “value added” service.
BULL GUARANTEE: Knoll Crest will insure each bull it sells in an unconditional manner against death or injury for one year. The insurance value shall be for 100% of the total cost of the bull. Knoll Crest shall receive salvage value, if there is any. Purchaser agrees to have bulls examined (or autopsied) by a licensed veterinarian and notify Knoll Crest immediately. If a replacement bull is available, he will be provided, or if the buyer prefers, credit toward one bull will be given in the following year’s sale. Replacement bulls are not covered by this guarantee.
BULL PICK UP AND DELIVERY: Pick up your bull on sale day and receive a $50 discount on each bull purchased which will be applied at checkout time. If you pick up your bull within 7 days of the sale date, you will be refunded $50 per bull. These discounts do not apply outside of the sale, on bulls that have been returned, and on replacement bulls. For bulls sold through Telo-Auction or LiveAuctions.TV, we will contact you to organize suitable pickup or shipping arrangements.
DELIVERY: If you need a bull delivered, we can arrange to have your bull delivered to anywhere in the continental US. We guarantee it will not exceed $250 per head.
WINTERING OF BULLS: Knoll Crest will winter bulls selling for $3,000 or more until March 1, 2020, at no cost. Other bulls may be wintered at a cost of $3/day. This will allow producers to buy bulls for future use and not have to take possession until Spring.
VOLUME DISCOUNTS: Buyers purchasing 2 or more bulls will receive a volume discount as follows: 2 bulls = 2%, 3 bulls = 3%, 4 bulls = 4%, 5 or more bulls = 5%. These discounts do not apply outside of the sale and on replacement bulls. Discounts do not apply to registered heifers.
PAYMENT SCHEDULE 2020-2021: For taxation purposes, it may be beneficial for some customers to pay for cattle after January 1, 2020. Therefore, we will gladly accept payment at sale (2020) or by January 6, 2021.
SEMEN INTEREST: Knoll Crest Farm will retain a 1/3 semen interest in every bull selling. In reality, this will affect only a very few bulls that sell. KCF reserves the right to collect semen at KCF’s cost and at the buyers’ convenience. KCF retains 1/3 of the semen revenue rights for each bull. The buyer owns 100% possession and 100% salvage value.
FLOOR PRICE: Each bull selling will be floored at $1,800 during the auction.
WE INVITE YOU TO JOIN US ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2020!
We want to make it easy for you to attend our sale, so we are offering several options below that will meet your individual needs. You may Pre-Register online at www.knollcrestfarm.com or call the office at 434-376-3567.
1. In Person at the Sale Barn
Come out and start the day with good fellowship and lunch starting at 11 a.m. You can obtain a bidder number from the ladies in the barn office, walk around and view the bulls in their pens, and enjoy the sale environment. If you PRE-REGISTERED online at www.knollcrestfarm.com, you may pick up your bidder number at the “Pre-Registered Bidder Number” Line.
Individual video footage of each bull will play in the sale ring as the animals are auctioned off during the sale. The sale animals will not be sent through the ring during the auction.
2. Through Telo-Auction
Before sale day, call Knoll Crest Farm at 434-376-3567 or register online at www.knollcrestfarm.com to obtain a Telo-Auction bidder number. During the sale, call 1-800-309-2350 to participate in the Telo-Auction bidding with a live auctioneer. When prompted, use the Conference ID number: 4505514#.
3. Internet Sales and Viewing
You have two options:
A. Watch and bid over LiveAuctions.TV
This is a new version of LiveAuctions.TV so you MUST create a new account. Go to www.LiveAuctions.TV and select “register” at the top right. Complete the required information then select “register.” An email will be sent to you to verify your email address. Once logged in, select our sale name and select “request a buyer number” which will require you to verify your cell phone number via text. Once you have a buyer number, watch the live video feed when the sale begins by clicking on “Event has started! Enter here!” We recommend registering for a buyer number at least 24 hours in advance of the auction; however, sale day requests may still be accommodated.
B. ONLY watch the video on LiveAuctions.TV AND Bid through the Tel-o-Auction (phone)
If you select to use this option, follow the instructions for #2 above for Telo-Auction. Then go to www.LiveAuctions.TV. Next, find and select our sale then find “Event has started! Enter here!” to watch the live video feed. DO NOT register for another buyer number. You will place your bid over the Telo-Auction (phone) with your Telo-Auction Bidder number. This will prevent a buyer from having two bidder numbers. Please turn the volume down on the computer so it doesn’t interrupt the Telo-Auction.
If you have additional questions or problems regarding the LiveAuctions.TV process, please contact LiveAuctions.TV at 817-725-8595 or for online support during the sale, type in your question in the “auction chat” and click “send.”
Bidders who are successful in making bids through either Telo-Auction or LiveAuctions.TV will be sent an invoice and contacted by Knoll Crest the following week to organize suitable shipping arrangements.
Videos of the bulls will be available about November 22, 2020 on our website at www.knollcrestfarm.com.
BULL DEVELOPMENT AND CONTEMPORARY GROUPING
Weaning weights (for 205 day adjusted weights) were taken in May. Bulls were weaned on pasture and hay. The “test period” was from early June to early October. For that period, bulls continued to graze in 15-30 acre pastures, had access to grass, hay and free-choice bull developer composed primarily of commodity ingredients, corn and an intake-limiting ingredient from Purina.
The bulls were divided into several contemporary groups for “ratioing” purposes at weaning and yearling. They were grouped by breed, pre-weaning location and management. ET bulls were put into separate contemporary groups. Our goal is to minimize confusion, while practicing sound genetic evaluation principals. Please give Paul a call if you have questions.
SCAN AND REGISTER FOR SALE
An Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) is a prediction of how future progeny of a sire or dam are expected to perform in various production and carcass traits which are measurable. EPDs are expressed in actual pounds, square inches, or centimeters (depending on the trait), plus or minus what you can expect in the weights or measurements of progeny sired by a particular animal as compared with another animal.
The EPDs of the animals listed in this sale book can be compared to other animals of the same breed.
The CAB® icon will appear on the pedigree of those bulls that meet the criteria for targeting the Certified Angus Beef® Brand.
Targeting the Certified Angus Beef® Brand
KCF Bennett Summation G485
HOW TO READ DATA
CAB® Best Practices Manual identifies the following criteria to best target bulls that will sire calves likely to meet the CAB® brand. Bulls in our sale book that meet the criteria have this logo on their pedigree following the animal’s name.
Demand for Certified Angus Beef (CAB®) brand has never been stronger. More than 1 billion pounds of CAB® was sold in the fiscal year 2018! With packers and feedlots looking to meet this demand, the future is bright for cattlemen who have the genetics in their calf crop that can achieve high quality grades and the CAB® brand’s specifications.
EPD Values taken from Spring 2019 Sire Evaluation Non-Parent Bulls report.
93% OF OUR BULL OFFERING MEETS THE TARGET! Sire EPD Recommendations for Angus-based Cowherds (From CAB® Best Practices Manual)
Calving Ease Direct (CED) - is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.
Birth Weight EPD (BEPD) - predicts the difference in average birth weight of a bull’s calves compared to calves of another bull. Reported in pounds.
*Experience has shown that an Angus bull with a CED EPD of +8 or higher and a BW EPD of +2.0 or less can be used on first-calf heifers with a minimal number of calving problems. If you do not have heifers to breed and just need a bull for cows that have calved before, most Angus bulls are acceptable for use on mature cows from a birth weight standpoint.
Weaning Weight EPD (WEPD) - is a prediction of a bull’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny. For example, Bull A has a Weaning Weight EPD of +60 pounds and Bull B has a Weaning Weight EPD of +40 pounds. At weaning, Bull A’s calves will average 20 pounds heavier. A higher number is desirable.
Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), feed efficiency expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed.
Yearling Weight EPD (YEPD) - takes into account both pre-weaning and post weaning growth. Yearling weight is the most heritable of all growth traits. You can expect bulls with high Yearling EPDs to produce fast gaining calves. If Bull A has a Yearling EPD of +90 and Bull B has a Yearling EPD of +60, Bull A’s calves will average 30 pounds heavier than Bull B’s at one year of age.
Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC) - expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.
Docility (DOC), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves.
Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. Milk EPD - Expressed in pounds of weaning weight that result from the amount of milk produced by daughters of a particular bull, as compared to the daughters of other bulls. If Bull A is +25 for Milk and Bull B is +15, bull A’s daughters’ calves will weigh 10 pounds heavier at weaning due to her superior milking ability.
CARCASS EPDS
Carcass Weight EPD (CW) - expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Marbling EPD (Marb) - predicts the difference in average USDA marbling score of a bull’s progeny compared to progeny of another bull at a similar end point. The higher the value, the higher the amount of intramuscular fat (taste fat) in the ribeye, which positively affects quality grade.
Ribeye Area EPD (RE) - expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
$VALUE INDEXES
$Value indexes, are multi-trait selection indexes to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. $Values are reported in dollars per head, where a higher value is more favorable. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.
Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), is the most maternally-focused selection index currently available to Angus members and commercial users of Angus genetics. $M, expressed in dollars per head, aims to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning.
Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.
Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires.
Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.
$G combines both $QG and $YG, and may be the best carcass decision tool for focusing on quality and red meat yield simultaneously.
Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.
Combined $Value Index($C), expressed in dollars per head, is an index which includes all traits that make up both Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) and Beef Value ($B) with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd.

Understanding Hereford EPDs
The American Hereford Association (AHA) currently produces expected progeny differences (EPDs) for 17 traits and calculates three profit indexes.
AHA’s genetic evaluation makes use of a Marker Effects Model that allows the calculation of EPDs by incorporating the pedigree, phenotypic and genomic profile of an animal. Animals that have a genomic profile will be denoted with a GE-EPD logo.
The current suite of Hereford EPDs and profit indexes includes:
Calving Ease — Direct (CE)
CE EPD is based on calving ease scores and birth weights and is measured on a percentage. CE EPD indicates the influence of the sire on calving ease in females calving at 2 years of age. For example, if sire A has a CE EPD of 6 and sire B has a CE EPD of -2, then you would expect on average, if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would have an 8 percent more likely chance of unassisted calving when compared to sire B’s calves.
Birth Weight (BW)
BW EPD is an indicator trait for calving ease and is measured in pounds. For example, if sire A has a BW EPD of 3.6 and sire B has a BW EPD of 0.6, then you would expect on average, if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would come 3 lb. heavier at birth when compared to sire B’s calves. Larger BW EPDs usually, but not always, indicate more calving difficulty. The figure in parentheses found after each EPD is an accuracy value or reliability of the EPD.
Weaning Weight (WW)
WW EPD is an estimate of pre-weaning growth that is measured in pounds. For example, if sire A has a WW EPD of 60 and sire B has a WW EPD of 40, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would weigh 20 lb. heavier at weaning when compared to sire B’s calves.
Yearling Weight (YW)
YW EPD is an estimate of post-weaning growth that is measured in pounds. For example, if sire A has a YW EPD of 100 and sire B has a YW EPD of 70, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would weigh 30 lb. heavier at a year of age when compared to sire B’s calves.
Dry Matter Intake (DMI)
The DMI EPD predicts the daily consumption of pounds of feed. For example, if sire A has a DMI EPD of 1.1 and sire B has a DMI EPD of 0.1, you would expect sire B’s progeny, if comparably mated, to consume on average 1 pound of feed less per day.
Scrotal Circumference (SC)
Measured in centimeters and adjusted to 365 days of age, SC EPD is the best estimate of fertility. It is related to the bull’s own semen quantity and quality, and is also associated with age at puberty of sons and daughters. Larger SC EPDs suggest younger age at puberty. Yearling sons of a sire with a 0.7 SC EPD should have yearling scrotal circumference measurements that average 0.7 centimeters (cm) larger than progeny by a bull with an EPD of 0.0 cm.
Sustained Cow Fertility
The AHA’s new SCF EPD is a prediction of a cow’s ability to continue to calve from three years of age through 12 years of age, given she calved as a two-year-old. The EPD is expressed as a deviation in the proportion of the 10 possible calvings to 12 years old expressed as a probability. For example, the daughters of a bull with a 30 EPD would have the genetic potential to have one more calf by age 12 than the daughters from a bull with a 20 EPD. In other words, the daughters from the 30 EPD bull would have a 10% greater probability of having one more calf than the bull with a 20 EPD. This is equivalent to saying that the daughters are 10% more likely to remain in the herd to age 12.
Maternal Milk (MM)
The MM EPD of a sire’s daughters is expressed in pounds of calf weaned. It predicts the difference in average weaning weights of sires’ daughters’ progeny due to milking ability. Daughters of the sire with a +14 MM EPD should produce progeny with 205-day weights averaging 24 lb. more (as a result of greater milk production) than daughters of a bull with a MM EPD of -10 lb. (14 minus -10.0 = 24 lb.). This difference in weaning weight is due to total milk production during the entire lactation.
Maternal Milk & Growth (M&G)
The M&G EPD reflects what the sire is expected to transmit to his daughters for a combination of growth genetics through weaning and genetics for milking ability. It is an estimate of the daughter’s progeny weaning weight. A bull with a 29 lb. M&G EPD should sire daughters with progeny weaning weights averaging 19 lb. heavier than progeny of a bull’s daughters with a M&G EPD of 10 lb. (29 minus 10 = 19 lb.). It is equal to one-half the sire’s weaning weight EPD, plus all of his MM EPD. No accuracy is associated with this since it is simply a mathematical combination of two other EPDs. It is sometimes referred to as “total maternal” or “combined maternal.”
Maternal Calving Ease (MCE)
MCE EPD predicts how easily a sire’s daughters will calve at two years of age and is measured on a percentage. For example, if sire A has a MCE EPD of 7 and sire B has a CE EPD of -3, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s daughters would calve with a 10% more likely chance of being unassisted when compared to sire B’s daughters.
Mature Cow Weight (MCW)
The MCW EPD was designed to help breeders select sires that will either increase or decrease mature size of cows in the herd. The trait was developed after years of cow weight data collection and the EPD relates directly to the maintenance requirements of a cow herd. For example, if sire A has a MCW EPD of 100 and sire B has an EPD of 85, then you would expect the females of sire A, if comparably mated, to be 15 lb. heavier at mature size.
Udder suspension (UDDR)
UDDR EPDs are reported on a 9 (very tight) to 1 (very pendulous) scoring scale. Differences in sire EPDs predict the difference expected in the sires’ daughters’ udder characteristics when managed in the same environment.
For example, if sire A has a UDDR EPD of 0.4, and sire B has a UDDR EPD of -0.1, the difference in the values is 0.5, or one-half of a score. If daughters of sires A and B are raised and managed in the same environment, you would expect half a score better udder suspension in daughters of sire A, compared to sire B.
Teat size (TEAT)
TEAT EPDs are reported on a 9 (very small) to 1 (very large, balloon shaped) scoring scale. Differences in sire EPDs predict the difference expected in the sires’ daughters’ udder characteristics when managed in the same environment.
For example, if sire A has a teat size EPD of 0.4, and sire B has a teat size EPD of -0.1, the difference in the values is 0.5, or one-half of a score. If daughters of sires A and B are raised and managed in the same environment, you would expect half a score smaller teat size in daughters of sire A, compared to sire B.
Carcass Weight (CW)
CW EPD is a beneficial trait when considering the impact that pounds have relative to end product value. At the same age constant endpoint, sires with higher values for carcass weight will add more pounds of hot carcass weight compared to sires with lower values for carcass weight. For example, if sire A has a CW EPD of 84 and sire B has a CW EPD 64, then you would expect the progeny of sire A, if harvested at the same age constant endpoint, to have a 20-lb. advantage in terms of hot carcass weight.
Rib Fat (FAT)
The FAT EPD reflects differences in adjusted 365-day, 12th-rib fat thickness based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Sires with low, or negative FAT EPDs, are expected to produce leaner progeny than sires with higher EPDs. Ultrasound measures are also incorporated into this trait and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale.
Ribeye Area (REA)
REA EPDs reflect differences in an adjusted 365-day ribeye area measurement based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Sires with relatively higher REA EPDs are expected to produce better- muscled and higher percentage yielding slaughter progeny than will sires with lower REA EPDs. Ultrasound measurements are also incorporated into this trait and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale.
Marbling (MARB)
MARB EPDs reflect differences in an adjusted 365-day marbling score (intramuscular fat, [IMF]) based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Breeding cattle with higher MARB EPDs should produce slaughter progeny with a higher degree of IMF and therefore higher quality grades. Ultrasound measurements are also incorporated into this trait and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale.
Baldy Maternal Index (BMI$)
The BMI$ is a maternally focused index that is based on a production system that uses Hereford x Angus cross cows. Progeny of these cows are directed towards Certified Hereford Beef. This index has significant weight on Sustained Cow Fertility, which predicts fertility and longevity of females. There is a slightly positive weight on Weaning Weight, Mature Cow Weight and Milk which accounts for enough growth but ensures females do not increase inputs. There is some negative emphasis on Dry Matter Intake, but a positive weighting on Carcass Weight which is anticipated to provide profitability from finishing of non-replacement females and castrated males. Marbling and Rib-eye Area are also positively weighted to keep the harvested progeny successful for CHB. This index is geared to identify Hereford bulls that will be profitable when used in a rotational cross with mature commercial Angus cows. Brahman Influence Index (BII$)
Bulls denoted as MDC or MSUDC in their footnote are carriers of recessive genes identified by AHA since 2018. We recommend that these bulls not be used on registered Hereford females, but rather in progressive commercial operations to maximize their benefits. Please contact Paul Bennett with any questions.
★ B279 is a unique breeding tool and was the most heavily used sire at KCF in 2020. He delivers the strongest combination of birth-to-growth spread, scrotal, udder traits, carcass merit and index values available in the breed today. Typically, his progeny are dark red, pigmented and exhibit lots of style and muscle shape. His dam is a unique cow with respect to her ability to produce calving ease, thickness, moderate stature, carcass merit, fertility, udder quality and phenotype. B279’s full sister at Knoll Crest are all standout cows.

AGA EPD DICTIONARY
Equipping commercial producers with all of the tools necessary to make a smart bull buying decisions requires the American Gelbvieh Association to provide background information on selection criteria. Below is an exhaustive list of the expected progeny differences (EPDs) and index values provided by the AGA along with a definition of each trait that is measured. Since AGA’s release of BOLT-powered EPDs on August 6, 2018, the majority of EPDs are BOLT EPDs, which means that Gelbvieh and Balancer® animals BOLT EPDs can be directly compared with other animals in the registries of other partner breed associations within the International Genetic Solutions (IGS) group. Gelbvieh and Balancer EPDs that are excluded from BOLT include: heifer pregnancy, 30-month pregnancy, and dry matter intake. The $Cow, efficiency profit index, and FPI™ indices are unique to the AGA and are not comparable across breeds.
MATERNAL TRAITS
Calving ease direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd.
Milk (MILK): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.
Calving ease maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-disposition to calve unassisted as heifers.
Heifer pregnancy (HP): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group.
30-month pregnancy (Pg30): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers.
Stayability (ST): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six year of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.
GROWTH TRAITS
Birth weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf.
Weaning weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.
Yearling weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.
CARCASS TRAITS
Yield grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.
Carcass weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint.
Ribeye area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable.
Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.
Fat (FT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade.
EFFICIENCY TRAITS
Dry matter intake (DMI): Represents the average daily dry matter intake per day consumed in pounds. A negative, or lesser value, is more favorable. For example, Bull A has a DMI EPD of .15 and Bull B has a DMI EPD of -.20, so the progeny of Bull B consume, on average, .35 pound less dry matter per day than progeny from Bull A.
INDEXES
Total maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD.
$Cow: Represents the genetic value in dollars of profit of an animal when retained as a replacement female relative to other animals in the herd. A higher number represents more profitable genetics for maternal productivity. $Cow will serve producers in selecting bulls that will sire daughters with stayability and reproductive efficiency as well as other traits that lead to profitability in a production system, such as milk, calving ease, moderate mature weight and the ability of calves to gain. A female’s genetics also influence the performance of her calves in the feedlot and at slaughter, so traits such as feed efficiency and carcass value are also included in $Cow.
Efficiency profit index (EPI): An economic selection index developed to aid producers in selecting for more feed efficient cattle that still have acceptable amounts of gain. The EPI provides slight negative pressure on intake, while keeping gain at a constant value. By selecting on this index, producers will be able to find those animals that gain the same amount as their contemporaries while eating less.
FPI™: An economic selection index, which stands for feeder profit index, is designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on a grade and yield standpoint. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease.

Barbara and James Bennett
Faith, Family, Friends, Farm
By James D. Bennett
It is again that time of year, six weeks prior to our December bull sale that Martha reminds me she needs the information for “my page.” Initially “my page” started when we were operating the Red House Bull Evaluation Center trying to explain and sell the idea and importance of performance testing. We operated the official Virginia Bull Test Station under contract to BCIA at VA Tech from 1972 to 1998 – but that’s history.
Today my focus is on a very special person to the Bennett family and the Knoll Crest Farm team, Martha Johnson. The addition of Martha as Office Manager brought a professional influence to a new level. An out of state customer may have said it best, “After speaking with Martha several times on the phone, I have been looking forward to today’s bull sale to meet Martha. She is a lovely lady talking on the phone and in person.”
Martha had come home from college with her roommate, Regina Shortt White, who was a member of Mount Carmel UMC. Mount Carmel Church provided lunch for our sale as they have for so many years. Martha became part of that team effort on sale day in 1994. During the sale, Jim Johnson, who was with the Virginia Cattlemen’s Association, was located above the bleachers on our Telo-Auction with a direct view of the crowd and, more importantly, the view of the auctioneer. I have no reason to think Jim may have missed a bid or two that day, but if so, I could certainly understand. Only a few minutes before the sale had started, he had been introduced to Martha.
Two years later, Barbara and I attended their beautiful wedding on June 1, 1996. Martha and Jim continued to be a part of our bi-annual sales--Jim always above the bleachers on the phone taking bids and Martha went from assisting Mount Carmel to clerking the sale. After many years of working as a Training Manager at B&W & AREVA, then staying home with their kids (Lilli and AJ), she agreed to come to work for Knoll Crest on a part-time basis in 2015.
Since retirement, I have been given the leisure to do more watching than managing the farm operation. Watching my family continue the farm operation with the 3rd and 4th generation. That has been a blessing to me to watch. My “bulldozing therapy” has transitioned to therapy sessions with Martha listening to and lending an ear, always encouraging me to enjoy the season I am in now, retirement.
At 87, as I give up “my page,” let me say my last story could be titled in four words…Faith, Family, Friends, Farm…what a blessing to me it has been.
May God Bless you and your family, James

VIDEO AUCTION FORMAT
With the technology available we feel we can still have a “live” auction without an animal standing in the ring. This will allow us to place less stress on livestock and the crew handling them. Instead, we will have video footage of each and every bull prerecorded to play in the sale ring as the bulls are auctioned off.
Video footage of the bulls will be available on www.knollcrestfarm.com about November 22, 2020. Animals will be sorted and available for viewing on sale day. If you would like to view the animals at the farm prior to the sale day, please give us a call and we would be glad to accommodate your request.
Live audio and prerecorded video footage will also be available on www.LiveAuctions.TV for buyers to bid who are unable to be at the auction on sale day. We will also be providing our tel-o-auction service as we have in years past.
