WELCOME TO MASTERPIECE 2013

G

reetings from myself and the show and sale committee and welcome to the 40th annual Masterpiece sale. It has been a very busy summer with good grass conditions across the country and a bumper grain crop throughout the land. Agribition time is upon us and once again we have a very healthy set of entries for the Agribition show. We have 135 Red Angus cattle and 345 Black Angus cattle which will prove a very successful show. This is a very special Masterpiece being our 40th sale which says a lot for the quality of cattle to walk through this ring and go out and be successful in the industry. If this was not the case this sale would not have made it forty years. This year OBI has done a wonderful job of creating lots of different options in the offering of cattle and given you a number of picks in some great operations. It has been a wonderful year and there is a great deal of feed in the country so now is the time to be taking some of these front end Masterpiece cattle home with you and putting them to work for your operation. From myself and the entire committee as well as the consigners we thank you for your support and interest in the past and feel free to buy with confidence in this wonderful set of cattle. They have made a name for this sale in the past and will continue to in the future.

Mike Howe SAA SHOW & SALE COMMITTEE

WELCOME TO THE 40TH ANNUAL

I

MASTERPIECE SALE

t is OBI’s pleasure to be working with the Saskatchewan Angus Association to present you the 40th Annual Masterpiece Sale. 40 years has seen a lot of fads come and go in the Angus Industry, but one thing has remained constant - being able to add genetics to your program from this event that will move you forward. Once again the consignors have stepped up to make this year’s offering truly exceptional. You will find a number of choice lots available this year which gives you the buyer the opportunity to select from the very top of leading programs to fit exactly where you want them in yours. New and old proven genetics will also be available in the frozen genetics portion which will allow you to jump into the future with the new or select time tested and true genetics which have worked, still work and will continue to work. The females on offer today are poised to compete in the show ring and also go on to become leading brood cow matrons in your program. Be sure to join us Wednesday November 13 for the 40th Annual Masterpiece Sale. If OBI or any of the sales staff can be at any assistance, we are just a phone call away. See you in Regina.

Once again we would like to thank Double C Red Angus for their generous donation to this special event. The folks who continue to support us over the years we also would like to thank you. The scholarship program is one that is highly valued by us and it is you who continue to make it possible. Double C Red Angus have dug deep into their pens and gave us a Roka heifer calf, a treasured line at their farm. Again this year it will be a "Dutch Auction" process just before the Masterpiece Sale commences. The heifer will not be at Agribition but can be delivered there for transport to her new home, or arrangements can be made for a later date, at the winners convenience.

Tibbie 40A is a female that will top your brood cow pen, both phenotypically and with a rock solid pedigree. This heifer calf combines two of the greatest sires in the industry – HF Tiger 5T (World Angus Forum Champion Bull), who has sired more sale toppers and show winners than we have room to mention, and Connealy Consensus 7229 who just continues to excel in all areas, proving to be a leader in calving ease, as well as in the weaning, yearling and marbling traits. The Consensus progeny are very correct and functional cattle with the first lactating females doing an extremely impressive job on their first calves. The Tiger, Consensus cross females have udders to die for, resulting in calves with outstanding performance. And to top it all off, a disposition that you love to be around, such an immeasurable trait.

HF Rosebud 98P (dam of 61A) has hit a home run again, mated with yet another sire. This is the type of cow that will connect with any bull, and then produce the top cut in your weaned calves, consistently. Rosebud 61A is an ultra-feminine, deep, and long bodied female, with plenty of muscle shape, great hair and eye appeal. You will admire her freshness and character as you browse the heifer pen at Hamilton Farms. Her maternal sister by Connealy Consensus 7229 sold last year in the Masterpiece Sale to Glen Gabel Angus of Regina for $7000. Also listed in 98P’s repertoire of sale toppers are: HF Prowler 43U, owned by Boss Premier Cattle, who was eventually sold in Denver for $100,000 for half interest to Werner Angus, Reisig Cattle, ZWT Ranch and Buford Ranch. Ivan Demmans from Nesset Lake Angus purchased a son (HF Sequel 40Y) for $22,000 and Desmond Rasmussen purchased another son for $12,5000. HF Rebel 53Y, on the top side of the pedigree is no slouch either. HF Rebel 53Y is one of HF Tiger 5T’s top sons, as well as the high selling bull in the Hamilton Farms Sale 2011, purchased by Stevenson Angus Ranch, MT, TC Ranch, NE, and Green Angus Ranch, MT for $95,000 for 2/3 interest. Rebel calves have met all expectations and more, and Rosebud 61A will be the first progeny to sell at public auction. The semen has been kept exclusive to date so don’t miss this rare opportunity to take home a great one. T H E

Here are the two females, that when Bob was out selecting he couldn’t decide which heifer he loved more, so we decided to bring both to this year’s Masterpiece Sale. I feel these heifers are two of the very best that we have raised to date. They are sisters sired by JL Warden 1220, a bull we selected out of the great Johnson Livestock program at Peebles. Dave and Andrew both told me on separate occasions that this bull, 1220, was out of one of their very best females. He is sired by Sitz Upward 307R and his dam is out of Four Seasons 5231, a SAV Traveler 004 son. Warden 1220 has done a phenomenal job for us. His progeny are all tremendous, sound, big middled, thick made and amazingly structured cattle that are truly the right kind. It is very tough for me to me to part with females like this; unfortunately this will be the only calf crop we get from him due to a bad back injury he suffered last fall. I really can’t say enough about both of these females. 276A is a very sweet made female that profiles amazingly. I just love her hip and leg structure and how incredibly smooth fronted she is. 279A is a very long spined heifer that has brood cow written all over her. She is super thick, big footed and combines all that with a ton of neck extension.

Take a look here if you want one to road next summer and take home some jack-pot money or if you haven’t found your junior heifer yet. Ruby is moderate framed but will really pound down the scales. She is super round ribbed, big hipped, balanced and has that jacked out front end you want for the show ring and…….she can strut. We are very happy with the group of Upshot calves we have and feel this heifer has unlimited potential as a cow when you are done showing her. Her dam is an Emblazon female that came from the great Crescent Creek herd and is proving to be a never miss workhorse. Don’t miss this one. Ruby will stand some lusty competition next year.

We are offering, in our opinion, an outstanding show heifer prospect. Her beautiful profile and femininity will catch your eye and her depth, length of body, power and smoothness will keep you looking. This heifer not only has eye appeal, her genetics are nice to look at too. She is sired by FCF Windfall 112Y, a bull we purchased with Triple L Livestock from Four Corners Farm out of Illinois. We are thrilled with what he is producing for us, you can see why. Her dam is a heifer we bought out of the Eastondale program, and for a first calf heifer we are pleased with what she produced for us. This little lady is the reigning 2013 Gold Show heifer champion! Definitely a female we would love to keep around for a piece of our program but realize the need to sell the very good ones as well. We have been one of only a few programs to use the Cole Creek Black Cedar 46P bull in Canada. He is the sire of the Genex bull Cole Creek Cedar Ridge that saw a great deal of use in A.I. programs across North America this past spring. The only other direct daughter of Black Cedar 46P that we know of selling was in our spring bull sale where she was the high selling open female purchased by Black Creek Cattle of Carroll, MB. Ruby 9’13’s dam is a extremely good first calf heifer sired by the 2009 Reserve Champion bull at the World Angus Forum, Eastondale Break Away 32’07 ! Maternal sister to this female’s dam was a high selling heifer calf in a past Masterpiece sale, selling to Lookout Stock Farm she then went on to be one of their high selling females in their dispersal sale. Have a long look and study the maternal pedigree in this female her granddam was one of the all time high selling bred heifers at the Angus Pride sale. If you are serious about finding a female to be a cornerstone female to build a great cow family out of, you need to consider what this female has to offer, she is not just another heifer calf!

Countess 59A is a deep bodied heifer with plenty of volume. Her dam is a good young cow that has a great udder and good set of feet and legs. 59A ranked number 2 in WW index. There is no wonder why with her sire JL Upward 1181 whom we purchased from the good people at Johnson Livestock, where he was the 2nd high selling bull in their 2012 sale. JL Upward ranks in the top 1 % of the breed for WW, YW and Milk numbers. His calves are looking good and we can't wait until these females start milking. Looking for a sharp female with numbers to back it up, 59A fits the bill.

39A is the first daughter to sell out of 680S; she has produced 3 bulls: 1 sold to Scott Rogerson and 2 of our selling Red Angus bulls, one selling to Heart Valley and Aspen Angus out of our 2012 sale and another bull that we sold to Wildman Livestock and SSS Red Angus, where he has had lots of admirers there out of our 2013 sale. So it is hard to sell her only heifer she has raised so far but we wanted to bring something special to the Masterpiece sale. The sire Revolution we purchased at the Masterpiece sale from Soo Line. He then went on to be Senior Yearling Champion at the World Angus Forum in 2009. The Revolutions are making good females with picture perfect udders which would come from the Rhonda cow that sold to Wildcat Creek for $30,000. There is no guess work on 39A with proven pedigrees like hers. Not to mention her top 5% for WW and top 9% for YW.

Here is only the second Ghost Rider 108Y female ever offered for sale. She is one powerful heifer calf from our top producing Serebl 95N cow family. Her dam 95N is a cornerstone female here at WRAZ - the kind of female that makes you money! This Serebl 95N cow family has definitely proven itself here and the daughters of 95N are very strong producers. This cow family was well accepted as our feature pen during the Angus tour in August. Now lets talk about her sire Ghost Rider 108Y. He is an easy fleshing son of Mulberry with tons of growth, shape and muscle – come and check out the foot on him in “The Yards” during Agribition. Back in 2008 at the Brylor Ranch Tradition with a Vision Sale Ghost Rider’s dam 22L went to Kansas for $10,000 and I partnered up with Bryan on her daughter 19U (full sib to Ghost Rider) at $7500 for half that same day as a heifer calf. Both have been flushed successfully - 22L recently traded for $17,000 USD at eleven years of age and 19U’s first born was Red Brylor WRAZ Mak’n Waves 39X at $47,500. This kind of female doesn’t cost you – she will PAY you!!

One of our very best 2013 heifer calves. She's out of the prolific Annie family at Howes Red Angus. Her dam 46R was spotted on a stubble field tour out of the pickup window; an offer was made, a deal was struck and she has become a phenomenal brood matron. 24A's sire "Finest Tradition" was a high seller at Howe's 2010 Bull Sale at $18,500. He is owned jointly with Wilbar and has left us an impressive group of calves; both male and female. Buy with confidence here!

SELLING THE PICK OF THE 2013 HEIFER CALVES OUT OF RED BIEBER ROLLIN DEEP Y118. At first we had no intentions of selling any Rollin Deep heifer calves this year. I just don't want to part with them. Sometimes sales management should just take NO for an answer and leave a poor fellow alone. Well I won't mention any names, but when a certain sales manager took his 2 eyes and his 2 big ears over to where I was hiding my Rollin Deep heifer calves, the badgering to put something in the sale wouldn't quit. So here it is. They are a special group. I think Rollin Deep will make a huge impact in the breed for years to come. The calves just keep coming on, and looking better and better. We're offering your choice of any Rollin Deep heifer calf born in 2013. Choice must be made before AI season. (We won't be selling anymore, so timing’s not an issue). SELLING 1 PACKAGE OF 20 STRAWS This will be the 3rd and final package of Rollin Deep semen to sell in Canada for the 2014 breeding season. At last years Masterpiece sale it fetched as high as $350 per straw, selling to Leeauwenburgh and Lauron Red Angus. They are going to love their calves. We used him fairly hard this spring, cleaning up on 77 heifers and then cleaning up on 40 two year olds that only 15 were AI'd previously. We're expecting in excess of 50 natural born calves next spring, and judging from the ones on the ground now, we made the right decision to go that hard on him. His condition after breeding was better than any bull we've ever used, and that is saying something because “Pudge” walked our pastures for years. SELLING: PICK OF THE 100 BRED HEIFERS AT U-2 RANCH LTD. 2012's pick at U2 was certainly a popular sale offering that Robb Farms purchased as one of the premium lots in the Masterpiece. The sire selection and consideration are of the highest standard with herdbulls. U2 Ranch does not let females go very easily and this is an opportunity that rarely comes about to buy a sibling to one of the stoutest set of bulls and from some of the finest people in the industry.

SELLING: THE PICK OF THE 2013 HEIFER CALVES FROM HOWE RED ANGUS This year we have decided not show anything in the purebred show due to a number of different circumstances but we wanted to continue to participate in the Masterpiece Sale. So for this year we are going to offer pick of our calendar year heifer calves. This is one the of the nicest set of heifer calves we have produced in my opinion. These heifer calves are very tightly bred with numerous half and three quarter sisters. We have strived to produce the kind of females that raise those big rugged type bulls that the cowboys eat up at our bull sale. There are females in here that you can take and use them any way you want to go with them. These heifer calves are very closely related to a lot of the high selling bulls we have sold in our bull sale like Magnum, Finest Tradition, Bold Edition, Twenty X, Designer 63X, Headliner, Designer 88Z. We welcome you to come and see the calves prior to the Masterpiece Sale and look forward to touring the new buyer through our program.

SELLING: THE SECOND PICK OF THE 2013 HEIFER CALVES AT LLB ANGUS The picks keep getting better with one of the most powerful and well established herds in Canada. LLB Angus has been developing their herd for over 40 years now and has one of the best walking bull batteries around. They always are looking to improve their program with breed leading herdsires from North America to walk at the farm with over 800 cows to breed. They select these herdsires for performance traits, growth and thickness while also having strong maternal traits and structural soundness. By following these criteria the sire groups at LLB Angus are uniform and functional. This year LLB decided not to have a production sale so this offer is up to you; therefore there is a numerous selection of heifer calves for show prospects or brood cows. Lee & Laura & Family would gladly tour you around the herd and shed some input on what they believe is your next great female. They will treat you right at LLB! PLEASE NOTE: The 1st Pick of the Heifer Calves was donated to the Canadian Angus Foundation “Building the Legacy Sale” and was purchased by the Remitall Farms Inc., so they will have the first pick. 2013 mark’s the 40th annual MASTERPIECE sale. Congratulations to the Saskatchewan Angus Association for making this sale happen and to the breeders for continuing to support what could very well be one of the longest running Angus sales in Canada. Crescent Creek has contributed to over 30 sales with the first one in 1977.The Masterpiece has always been a showcase event as breeders brought their best. Breeding Angus cattle has always been a passion here, and we are very proud of our cow herd. This year we offer something that really only happens at a total dispersal. The pick of a herd. On offer are two picks from the WOS herd letter breeding females. 1st pick (X,W,U,T) 2nd pick (S,R,P,N). Choice to be made by January 5th 2014. We feel very confident after 60 years of selection, which includes almost 50 years of performance records, this cow herd will work. Any one who has followed our program recognizes that cow families are very important to us, and what an opportunity to tap into a genetic base that is quite different from the norm. In fact there are only 4 AI sired cows in the offering, the rest from sound “walking bulls” most of which were used in excess of 6 to 8 years. The genetic potential is huge. Remember this is not an embryo package or a flush this is the factory itself. We opened our herd up in 2004 for our 50th anniversary sale when ROSEBUD 115F was sold. 5 short years later she was crowned PRIEMIER DAM at the World Angus Forum for her new owner MWC Cattle Co., a purchase they never regretted. Give us a call if we can be of any assistance or better yet stop by and see this factory in production. Check the ELITE DAM list on the Canadian Angus web site, CRESCENT CREEK will not disappoint.

F.O.B. BOUCHARD LIVESTOCK Very rare opportunity to obtain some of the very best genetics from the past and I mean past. 43 years ago a bull nicknamed Poundmaker came to join our rich heritage in Angus genetics. Who knew that he would become one of the breed legends and this is your opportunity to obtain some of his genetics. Poundmaker produced big barreled, full Angus cows and would rival many sires with a set of producing daughters. Corvallis Angus Farms used Poundmaker extensively in their herd and the cows he produced were powerful females with great feet. Not many opportunities to find these rare semen, take advantage of it. F.O.B. SHANE CASTLE Another very rare opportunity to obtain some Red Angus genetics that we all know will make you the front end pasture females. Prospector 133Z has sired some of the greatest females across the land and his semen is very rare. We fortunately did find some and we knew we had to sell in this the 40th Anniversary of the Masterpiece. His dam, Lassie 18T was a donor cow for KBJ and her picture still resides in the barn and I am always amazed of how much of a perfect cow she was. Northern Samurai was a mainstay for the enthusiasts into the black red carrier endeavors in the Red Angus industry. The only question now is which cow do you flush to mate with Prospector 133Z?
