CATSINaM’s
The Congress of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nurses and Midwives (CATSINaM) is the national peak membership body representing, advocating, and supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nurses and midwives.

To lead the nursing and midwifery workforce to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This Roadmap describes CATSINaM’s key research priority areas and topics of interest. The Roadmap is for individuals and organisations that are thinking of partnering with CATSINaM.
CATSINaM’s role in research and knowledge translation:
CATSINaM’s role is to provide expert advice, administrative and management support for relevant research and knowledge translation opportunities and initiatives.
CATSINaM’s scope of support is described in the table below. It consists of three key areas:
This involves strengthening the skills of CATSINaM members and stakeholders to have the knowledge and skills to undertake a particular task and perform their roles more effectively.
This involves fostering networks and connections between members, research partners and practitioners by creating opportunities for collaboration, problemsolving, joint planning, and knowledge sharing.
This involves participating and promoting quality assurance and continuous improvement in First Nations nursing and midwifery research and practice.
CATSINaM’s key research priority areas and topics are shown below. The primary goal of these areas is to contribute to improving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ health and wellbeing through nursing and midwifery practice, policies, and education. Other priority areas and topics may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Nursing and midwifery practice innovations to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ health
• Indigenous knowledges and ways of working are valued and incorporated within nursing and midwifery models of care that engage the theory and practice of cultural safety, trauma-aware and healing-informed approach, which will enhance patient experience, outcomes, and satisfaction.
• Community-Centred Nursing and Midwifery Approaches that prioritise placebased and relational approaches.
• Enhancing Patient Safety and Quality of Care such as novel strategies, protocols, and interventions to improve cultural, therefore clinical safety, patient safety, reduce healthcare errors, and enhance quality of care delivery.
• Leadership and Professional Development models, mentorship programs, and professional development initiatives that foster excellence and resilience among nursing and midwifery professionals and a maturing of nursing and midwifery systems.
• Advanced Technological Applications in Care focusing on integrating cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, telehealth, wearable devices, and robotics in nursing and midwifery practice.
• Innovative Approaches to addressing health disparities, promoting health equity, and addressing social determinants of health.
• Innovative Research Methodologies, Data Collection Techniques, and Metrics for assessing Closing the Gap, including workforce representation and patient experiences.
Eliminating racism experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in education and practices for nurses and midwives
• Culturally Safe Care focusing on practical strategies for providing culturally safe care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
• Anti-Racism Education and Training focusing on curriculum development, training programs, and continuing education initiatives to promote awareness of racism, privilege, and unconscious bias among nursing and midwifery students and professionals.
• Advocacy and Policy Development focusing on advocacy efforts, policy recommendations, and legislative initiatives aimed at addressing systemic racism and promoting equity within healthcare services, education, and regulatory systems.
• Building Inclusive Learning Environments within nursing and midwifery education institutions, including strategies for fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion among students, faculty, and staff.
• Recruitment and Retention of Diverse Talent focusing on recruitment strategies, mentorship programs, and retention initiatives to increase diversity and representation within the nursing and midwifery workforce at all levels.
• Collaborative Partnerships and Community Engagement focusing on building collaborative partnerships with community organisations, advocacy groups, and stakeholders to address health disparities, promote social justice, and advance antiracism efforts in healthcare.
Conditions for success in the lifespan of a professional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nursing and midwifery journey
• Education and Training focusing on nursing and midwifery students’ foundational education and training experiences, including innovative teaching methodologies, clinical practicum experiences, and mentorship programs.
• Transition to Practice focusing on transitioning from student to professional nurse or midwife, including strategies for successful integration into the workforce, navigating workplace culture, and building confidence and competence in clinical practice.
• Career Development and Advancement focusing on career pathways, professional development opportunities, and strategies for advancing within the nursing and midwifery professions, including leadership development, specialisation, and advanced practice roles.
• Workforce Well-being and Resilience focusing on factors that contribute to the well-being and resilience of nursing and midwifery professionals throughout their careers, including self-care practices, work-life balance, and strategies for managing stress and burnout.
• Mentorship and Professional Support focusing on the importance of mentorship, peer support networks, and professional associations in supporting nurses’ and midwives’ career development and success at all stages of their journey.
• Advocacy and Leadership focusing on nurses’ and midwives’ roles as advocates for patients, communities, and the profession, as well as opportunities for leadership and policy engagement to effect positive change within healthcare systems.
• Retirement and Legacy focusing on the transition to retirement and the legacy of nursing and midwifery professionals, including reflections on accomplishments, contributions to the profession, and opportunities for mentorship and knowledge sharing.
