Why Is It So Hard to Pray Out Loud?

Recently I was asked, “Why is it so hard to pray out loud?” Some people don’t mind praying out loud. Others are terrified by it! Don’t feel bad if you struggle to pray out loud. It’s a very common struggle, even for deeply committed Christians. I’ve even known pastors who struggled to pray out loud—especially at the beginning of their ministries.

So, if you are a pastor and church leader, you should always check with people before you put them on the spot and ask them to pray out loud. Even if you think you know someone, check with them first if you’ve never heard them pray out loud.

Now, let me give you some tips to help if you struggle to pray out loud.

Tip Number 1—Practice

Practice praying out loud when you’re alone. It may surprise you, but most people aren’t used to hearing the sound of their own voice. And hearing your voice when everyone else in the room is completely silent can really weird you out. So, practice praying out loud at home when you’re all alone. God will love it and no one else will know. And practice makes perfect.

Tip Number 2—Pray for Dinner

Start by praying for dinner while alone or with your family. This is how I learned how to pray out loud when I was a kid. My parents prayed for the meal and sometimes they asked the kids to pray. We simply copied them and prayed something like: “God is great! God is good! Let us thank Him for our food! Amen.”

A simple meal blessing like this is easy to remember. From this, I became accustomed to praying out loud and it was easy to progress to prayers

for other occasions as I grew older. This is a great way to train your own kids to pray and it can help you too. Start a family habit of praying before your meals, even when you go out to eat in a restaurant. It’s a good spiritual practice for your family. Let your kids in on the fun while they’re young. It will bless your family in so many ways and help you and your kids learn to pray out loud.

Tip Number 3—Just Talk to God

You don’t have to sound like the preacher at church. Just be yourself. God isn’t looking for fancy language. He just wants you to be you. Some of the best prayers I’ve heard were in plain language that sounded like a friend talking to a friend. So just be yourself.

Tip Number 4—Keep it short. Keep it simple.

Trust me, no one is going to complain your prayer was too short. People like short prayers! Don’t try to go on and on. Just say what you need to say and be done. In fact, it’s perfectly okay to memorize a short standard prayer you can use. Start with a standard, basic prayer and add anything specific you need to pray.

When I was growing up, I had a basic prayer that went like this: “Dear God, thank you for everything You’ve given me and done for me. Please heal anyone who is sick, comfort those who are grieving, and forgive our sins. In Jesus Name. Amen.” So, you can pray something simple like this and if you think of anything specific, just add that in too.

Praying out loud can be hard when you first start, but the more you practice and the more you pray, the easier it will be. So, let’s pray right now: “Jesus, help everyone reading this to learn to pray out loud. Amen.”

Souvenirs

See God in the people you encounter and experience the presence of God.

It’s summer! Sleeping in, sunburns, video games, no school, and of course...trips! I’m assuming you’re going on a few trips of some sort: the beach, the Himalayas, the video game store, the park.

Growing up, one of the things I looked forward to most was our summer mission trip. Where we went was never an issue, it was the trip that mattered— specifically the hallowed tradition of bringing back souvenirs from the trip. Even now when I think souvenirs, I think of those kitschy stores at the beach with overpriced made-in-China faux shells and inappropriate t-shirts. Well, that’s not what I’m talking about; those are terrible.

When I talk about souvenirs, I mean random stuff—a broken shower knob that fell off the super sketchy showers in the dorms onto someone’s foot, a rock from the work site that claimed our sweat and blood as we repaired a church, an illegible card from that terrible kid at VBS. These were things that had stories; they had history, they had character that changed us in one-way or another.

As I got older, I realized two things:

1. I had a bunch of random “things” that took up too much space (much like other souvenirs)

2. The stuff wasn’t important, but the stories and how the experiences affected us really mattered.

Now when we go on any sort of excursion, at the end of the day we ask, “Where did you see God today?” We find our souvenirs in our teammates through the people we interact with—from the people we encounter and through whom we experience the presence of God. Those are our souvenirs.

Don’t get me wrong; overpriced kitsch has its place. I love my tiny plaster surfing pirate. But before you spend your parents’ hard-earned cash on something, ask yourself what your real souvenir is going to be; ask what you’re

going to really be taking back from this particular trip. We may not find Moses’ burning bush, or Balaam’s talking donkey, but if we’re keeping our eyes and hearts open to experience God rather than looking to take something home, we’re going to be surprised.

So this summer and fall, and as often as you think about it, keep asking: “Where am I seeing God in this?” I think we’ll be amazed at what kind of things we’ll bring back from a simple trip to the lake. Sure we’ll have some great tales of heroism and idiocy; that’s all part of the package. But like any good habit, we’ll start to notice little changes if we keep looking for God in everyday events and normal people. And we’ll discover that our whole perspective changes and begin seeing God everywhere! Once our sunburns fade, we’ll notice we gained so much mire than even stories. We’ll get in the habit of finding God and never be the same.

An investment advisory fiduciary is a financial professional or entity that provides investment advice to clients and is legally bound to act in the best interests of those clients. This fiduciary duty requires the advisor to prioritize the client's interests above their own and to provide advice that is prudent and aligned with the client's goals and risk tolerance.

The fiduciary duty is a higher standard of care compared to the typical "suitability standard" followed by some financial professionals. Under the suitability standard, advisors are only required to recommend investments that are suitable for their clients, which may not necessarily be in the clients' best interests.

In contrast, an investment advisory fiduciary must act in a manner that is loyal, diligent, and free from conflicts of interest. They have a legal obligation to provide advice that is based on thorough analysis, professional expertise, and a genuine understanding of their clients' financial situation. This includes disclosing any potential conflicts of interest and ensuring that the advice provided is in the best interest of the client.

Ensuring that your financial advisor is a fiduciary is important for several reasons:

1. Duty of Loyalty: A fiduciary is legally obligated to prioritize your best interests above their own. This means they must act with loyalty and avoid conflicts of interest that could compromise the advice they provide. By working with a fiduciary, you have greater assurance that the recommendations and decisions made are solely in your best interest.

2. Higher Standard of Care: Fiduciaries are held to a higher standard of care compared to advisors who operate under the suitability standard. Fiduciaries are required to provide advice that is diligent, thorough, and based on a deep understanding of your financial situation, goals, and risk

What is a Fiduciary and why does it matter to my investments?

Money Matters Granger Hughes with

tolerance. This higher standard ensures that the advice you receive is well-researched, well-informed, and tailored to your specific needs.

3. Disclosure of Conflicts: Fiduciaries are required to disclose any conflicts of interest that could influence their recommendations. This transparency allows you to make informed decisions and understand any potential biases or incentives that may exist. It helps you evaluate whether the advice being provided is truly in your best interest or influenced by external factors.

4. Minimization of Financial Exploitation: Fiduciaries are bound by their fiduciary duty to act in a manner that prevents financial exploitation. This is particularly important for vulnerable individuals such as the elderly or those with diminished capacity. Fiduciaries must prioritize the protection and preservation of your financial assets, reducing the risk of abuse or undue influence.

5. Trust and Confidence: Working with a fiduciary can instill a greater sense of trust and confidence in your financial advisor-client relationship. Knowing that your advisor is legally obligated to act in your best interest can provide peace of mind and enhance the trust you place in their guidance.

The fiduciary duty is typically associated with Registered Investment Advisers (RIAs) in the United States who are regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) or state securities regulators. These advisors are required to register with the appropriate regulatory body and adhere to specific rules and regulations governing their conduct.

Choosing an investment advisor who acts as a fiduciary can provide investors with an additional layer of protection and confidence, as it ensures that their advisor is obligated to act in their best interests.

Old Friends

There is a Ben Rector song that celebrates the blessing of having old friends. He says, “You can grow up, make new ones, but truth is, there’s nothing like old friends.”

A few months ago, I got a call from an old friend. We worked together on staff at Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL. He was traveling through our area and wanted to meet up. What was supposed to be a one-hour lunch turned into an all-afternoon conversation. It was good to catch up and reflect on some of the experiences we had together.

I left our conversation encouraged. We cannot return to the past, but old friends help us to remember. Those reminders are important to our present and can influence our future.

The Last Apostle

John was the last living apostle. The rest had been martyred for their faith.

When Jesus was with the apostles, John was the youngest of the twelve. He was one of the three that made up Jesus’ inner circle. At the last supper, it was John who leaned on Jesus’ chest. Jesus loved all of His disciples, but five times in his gospel, John refers to himself as “the disciple whom Jesus loved.”

But it has been a while, at least fifty years since Jesus’ resurrection and ascension. Life has been difficult for John as persecution is increasing in the Roman Empire. At the time of his writing The Book of Revelation, John is an aged and wounded man, exiled to spend his last days on the isle of Patmos.

Suddenly, as John is in worship on The Lord’s Day, Jesus appears (Revelation 1:9-20). That reunion gave John some important reminders about their relationship.

“To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and dominion forever and ever! Amen. ‘Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him.’ Even so. Amen. ‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty” (Revelation 1:5-8).

The Book of Revelation charts a triumphant but turbulent future for the people of God. These reminders from our resurrected Christ help hold us faithful.

Jesus loves us. That is good to know in a world that is often unlovely nor loving.

Jesus freed us from our sins by His blood. The Book of Revelation reveals the gruesome fate of the rebels of God as

they suffer His wrath and judgment. It is good to know you are redeemed.

Jesus has transformed us into a group of people who belong to God, serve God, and bring glory to God as a kingdom of priests.

John reminds us that Jesus is returning and that His return will be visible, vengeful, and victorious. We must be ready!

Maybe it has been a while since you have seen Jesus. Read Revelation 1 and get reacquainted with Him. Be reminded of what He has done for you. It is important for your present and can influence your future.

Bible Study and Challenge

Read Revelation 1

• How does this passage encourage you to praise Jesus?

• How does this passage encourage you to pray today?

• Write out some essential truths about Jesus that this passage teaches us.

Make a journal entry of three things that are discouraging you. How do the reminders about our relationship with Jesus encourage you? Share with someone this week at least one of those ways that the vision of Jesus in Revelation has encouraged you. Perhaps it will encourage them.

Noteworthy

As a teacher, I often find myself in the middle of an explanation and see the blank look on a student’s face. The problem occurs when I am using a multimeaning word.

Take the word note, which by the way, has several meanings. Musical “notes” have given me great pleasure over the years. Dick Clark once said, “Music is the soundtrack of your life.” I believe that. Music evokes such memories and emotions for me. The hymn “Love Lifted Me” takes me back to the wooden pew, sitting by Nana, eating cookies she packed in her purse. Doobie Brothers’ “Takin’ It to The Streets” has me marching on the football field in 1982. The “Bye, Baby Bunting” lullaby puts me rocking in a chair, snuggling with my girls, who are all grown up now. “We Are Family” by Sister Sledge brings my mind to a fashion show orchestrated by the local hospital as a fundraiser. My three sisters and I participated. What a sweet moment as our younger sister walked onto the stage. She had been in a horrible car accident the year before. It was a miracle she had lived, let alone about to walk! Note-worthy indeed.

My favorite “notes” are the ones we leave for others. I tried to sneak notes in my girls’ lunch boxes or gym bags over the years to remind them how much they are loved. Recently, I helped a friend—whose mom passed away about a year ago—pack for a move back to her childhood hometown. Amid the boxes, she appeared carrying a large Ziplock bag. It was filled with yellow sticky notes that her mom had left in various places every time she had visited.

I once read a story about a teacher who asked her students to “note” characteristics about their classmates. Many years later, one of those students was killed while serving his country. At the funeral viewing, some of his classmates discovered the young man had carried his peer’s notes in his wallet all those years.

Noting the significance of others’ words, I was prompted to begin the activity in my fifth-grade classroom. I challenged the students to look for traits that others might overlook. One particular year, I had a student who had a

severe reading disability. He could not even write words, just a string of letters with no spaces. I tried to help Gabriel fit in by helping us with tasks in our room—adjusting technology cords and desks. He had a good sense of humor also, but he got so overwhelmed with his school work.

The special educator took Gabriel to her room and read his notes to him: “You are funny,” “You are funny,” “You make me laugh.” But one brought tears to his eyes: “You are the bravest person I know.”

At my age, mental “notes” are important. I certainly need to take notes to remember things. For instance, I

recently exited a grocery store and searched for my car. I often forget to note where I have parked. Spotting a sliver car, I strolled over only to realize it was pulling out of the spot. I quickly diverted my look to another car, hoping the driver did not think I was about to get in with him.

I find myself writing notes and numbers on my hand when paper is not handy. However, with soap and water, they easily wash away. Not with God. He has noted us from the beginning. For when our names are engraved in our Heavenly Father’s hand, we will never be forgotten or washed away—Isaiah 49:16.

Thank You Lord

Ihad gone to my husband’s doctor’s appointment with him. As I followed behind him, trying to find his doctor’s office, a sign in another doctor’s office caught my eye. It was a simple sign, but to me, it spoke volumes. It said, “Work Hard, Stay Humble, Be Kind.” I thought to myself, is that the secret to a successful life? I knew in my heart that I had fallen way behind in following those simple directions. The Bible tells us in Matthew 6:33, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

Seeking God’s way for my life was always the right road to travel on, even though I knew there had been times I had veered off that path. My grandfather set the example for me as a child for how to walk with God and be successful for God.

My grandfather was always working hard at whatever job he was doing. From working in the hay field, to cutting fire wood, he worked hard at it. He was no shirker and got the job done. I loved to listen to him talk to God in prayer. He always said, “Thank You Lord, that everything is as well with us as it is.” As a child, hearing him say that in his prayers, I never fully understood the meaning behind it. Life was not always easy, yet God was real in my grandfather’s life. He loved God and his family, and stayed faithful to the God who was faithful to him.

I remember how he would often visit my family after I had a family of my own. It seems that he would often forget his hat, which he always wore. That gave him an excuse to come back to get it and visit again. My mom told me that she and her dad were prayer partners. They would meet and have

prayer together. What a blessing that was to hear about! Praying for them was important. It also helped increase our faith as we saw their prayers come to fruition.

I am thankful God blessed me and allowed me to be born into a Christian home. Thank You Lord, that everything is as well with us as it is. For Lord, You truly are worthy of all our love and praise.

Kids, Smart Phones, and “Text Neck”

Digital Usage

Cell phones. Tablets. Handheld devices. These days it would be difficult to find anyone not carrying one of these devices. That is especially true for younger people. Smartphone users spend thousands of hours in a hunched-over position as they text, compose emails, surf the Internet, read articles, or play games on their smart devices. “Text neck” has become a catchphrase describing neck pain and damage from “looking down at your digital devices too frequently and for too long.” This poor posture can cause severe wear and tear on your body and spine. This doesn't happen over a week or two using a phone -- this takes years.

The Consequences of “Text Neck”

A head bent 45 degrees forward, a typical tilt while one is texting, exerts a force on the spine of nearly 50 pounds, weight that hangs off neck ligaments, muscles, and joints. At 60 degrees, it feels like 60 pounds, increasing stress on the spine. You wouldn't put a 60-pound weight on your neck every time you look at your phone, but that's the force you're putting on your cervical spine when tilting your head down!

I have seen tens of thousands of patients in North Georgia in the last 25 years and in the last several years I have noticed a disturbing trend as smartphone usage has increased. Teenagers have been showing up with greater frequency with pain in neck, headaches, arm pain, muscle spasms, and numbness. I’ve noticed younger and younger patients turning up at my office with these conditions and unfortunately, I don't see it getting any better.

Tips to fight “Text Neck”

• Reduce Phone Time: Cutting down on teens' phone time is the first step for parental intervention. Anything you can do reduce the amount of time they spend awkwardly positioned in their bed, in a chair, or in a car can help.

• Balance your Spine: Chiropractic adjustments to restore balance and motion, treatments such as spinal decompression, ultrasound, and massage can help ease pain and improve function.

• Aim higher: Reduce neck strain by bringing your phone or tablet closer to eye level. When reading watching movies on a tablet, let your arms rest by propping the device up against something.

• Take a Break: Try to switch it up by not remaining in the same position for longer than 30 minutes at a time. A short walk or some light stretches can do wonders.

• Stretch: Start by slowly turning your head toward left shoulder and holding for five seconds. Do the same on your right side and you’re done! And then you can begin stretching in the opposite direction. Tilt your head back and look up. It's also helpful to stretch your arms back and squeeze your shoulder blades, along with rolling your shoulders.

Raising Saints in A Sinner’s World

In the modern world, we wake up, day after day to the news that makes us sad and griefstricken. As mothers and fathers, we want our children to live in a world where there is always peace and happiness. We try to hide the sadness of the world from them. Our children are our everything and we are so blessed to be their parents… but is it wrong to want to bring life into this sinful world…a world full of heartache?

Godliness begins in our homes. It is important for parents to join together in the task of raising “tiny disciples.” It is no secret that society is out to put its own stamp on our children. We need to prepare them to stand up for the Lord and not fall into society’s hands.

I read something the other day that has been heavy on my mind. “Why would you bring a child into such a cruel world? Imagine the things they will face.” The world became cruel when sin was introduced. From the beginning, trials and tribulations have been a part of day-to-day life. Our children were handpicked by God for this exact time.

Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go. And when he is old, he will

not depart from it.” Living by the Biblical truth in our homes, attending and being involved in a church, showing our children how to serve others, and showing love to a world that is not like us, are ways to prepare our babies for the world. Will

they be tempted? Yes. Will they fail? Yes, but they will be rooted in the Word and well-equipped to handle what is thrown at them.

As parents, let us pray for our children daily. Let us be there for them when they do fail. Let us give them the knowledge they need and pray their relationship with Christ is strong in their hearts— so they can be strong against the world.

One Nation under God

God never called us to take sides. He’s called us to take over. Let me prove it. Matthew 16:13-14 says “When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, ‘Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?’” So they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets’” (NKJV).

Then Jesus turns to His disciples and asks the same question. “He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’” (v. 15). Then Peter speaks for the group and says, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (v. 16).

Jesus answers. “Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (vs. 17-19).

The original translation for rock in verse 18 is plural not singular−“rocks.” The original word for church is “Eclacia” meaning, “called out ones.” What is the church, the calledout ones, supposed to look like?

The American Embassy is a little bit of America on foreign soil. The church is to be heaven on foreign soil. As believers, the Bible calls us strangers−aliens−on this earth.

But our job while on earth is to legislate kingdom authority in this dark world. Let us be reminded today that when you stand on God’s Word, you will meet opposition.

Let me also remind you that . . .

• Paul faced opposition, but he stood courageous.

• David stood in the face of opposition as a man of courage and a man after God’s heart.

• Nehemiah was encouraged to come down off the wall to listen to the naysayers but refused to stop doing that which he was called to do by God.

• Joshua tells us over and over to be courageous.

We must commit to stand, to pray, in seeking the will of God and for the strength, power, and boldness to accomplish His will.

Remember, our battle is not with those who oppose our biblical standard and biblical views. Our battle is with spiritual darkness and evil forces led by Satan and the demons. Therefore, we must love those who oppose our views, but we must keep our focus on legislating Kingdom authority while praying for wisdom, discernment, boldness, and strength to continue to run the race.

That is “one nation under God.”

Surprises! Surprises!

Do you like surprises? I like surprises that are fun and make me happy! One day, my friends had a surprise birthday party for me and I was really surprised—especially when some friends from out of town came! Have your parents ever planned a surprise trip for your family? Do you remember how excited you were when they told you? As the day got closer, did your mother begin to help you pack what you would need and talk about all the things you would do? I am sure you were getting excited! It is always fun to go and discover new places and do different things.

There were some children we read about in the Bible who had a big surprise when their parents told them they were going to see Jesus. They had heard about this man named Jesus who had healed sick people, healed blind people, and helped crippled people to walk. This story is in the Bible in Mark 10:13-16. Read the following story as it might have happened:

One day, there was an excitement in the city when people heard Jesus was there teaching. There were a group of parents who heard this news and they thought how fun it would be for Jesus to meet their children and give them a blessing. They hurried home and gathered their children and told them they were going to meet Jesus. The children were so happy they put on their best clothes to go. As they were walking down the dusty road, they were laughing and chanting— “we are going to see Jesus!” Some gathered flowers on the roadside and some picked up rocks to take to Him. They were a noisy group walking down the road because they were so excited.

Jesus’ disciples heard the group before they could even see them. They gathered and determined that Jesus would not want to be bothered with the children. They decided to turn them away. As soon as they saw them, they told them they had to leave. The children were so disappointed. However, Jesus saw what was happening and said, “No, don’t stop them, let them come and see

me.” The children began to run to Jesus, and He took them on His lap and talked to them. They shared the flowers and rocks with Him.

The disciples were surprised that Jesus would spend time with children. Jesus said to them, “Don’t ever get between them and me. These children are at the very center of life in the kingdom. Mark this: Unless you accept God’s kingdom in the simplicity of a child, you’ll never get in” (Mark 10:13-16). He then gathered the children around Him and prayed a blessing over them.

As the parents were returning home, they were so happy that Jesus told their children He loved them and that they were an important part of His ministry. The children all agreed this was the best surprise ever!

Gather with your family and discuss ways you know Jesus loves you. How do you think you can show Jesus you love Him? Some things may even surprise you!

Precious to God

We are all precious in His sight. —Isaiah 43:4

As soon as I read about a Trek-A-Thon coming to my area, I called my sister, Debra. She had been a fan of the Star Trek television series since the maiden voyage of the Starship Enterprise in 1966. She even named her little pointy-eared Pomeranian, “Mr. Spock.”

Neither Debra nor I knew what to expect at the Star Trek convention, so we dressed in nice but casual outfits. We put sundresses on my daughters, Rachel and Rebecca, and their hair in bouncy dog-ears.

As we entered the convention hall, Debra explained, “Hardcore fans call themselves Trekkies and sometimes dress like a favorite character.”

The words were barely out of her mouth when I spied Trekkies in the uniforms of Captain Kirk and Dr. McCoy, complete with the Star Fleet insignia. Three teenage girls strolled past in the mini-dress, tights, and boots popularized by Lieutenant Uhura. Clusters of people with Spock-ears greeted others with the words “Live long and prosper” as well as the parted-fingers Vulcan salute.

“What’s the deal with that guy’s eyebrows?” I whispered.

My sister smiled. She loved to show off her knowledge of Star Trek trivia. “Upturned eyebrows and a swarthy complexion are the features of a Klingon,” Debra explained. “The white gorilla-girl with a horn on top of her head is a Mugatus. Oh, and see the half black and half white fellow over there? His name is Lokai. He’s from the planet Cheron.”

Lokai from Cheron had painted the skin on the left side of his face and body a shiny black. The clothing on that side was white. The skin on his right side was a dull white with black clothing. Even his belt was half-and-half.

My wide-eyed daughters drank in the vast array of people gathered from planet Earth and beyond. Rebecca, my four year old, stared at Lokai, the half black and half white guy.

I pulled Rebecca into my lap and whispered, “What do you think about that fellow?”

“Jesus thinks he’s precious,” she answered. Surprised, I asked what she meant.

My child’s dog-ears swung back and forth as she sang a song she learned at church. “Red-and-yellow, black-andwhite, they are precious in His sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world.”

A sudden thought occurred to her and she whipped around to face me. “Oh, Mommy, do you think we’ll meet any red-and-yellows today?”

I love Rebecca’s appreciation for people who are not just like her. I pray she will always delight in the beautiful diversity of the people on planet Earth. Whether a person is red, yellow, black, white, black-and-white, red-and-yellow, or blessed with a splendid horn on top of his or her head, we are all truly precious in God’s sight.

The Flag of America

The Flag of America, how beautiful is its name, Ole Glory, the Bountiful, and the home of the U.S.A. America, the Beautiful, the Land of the Free, The Home of the Courageous where everyone wants to be.

The Red, the White, and the Blue, with the U.S. Continental Band, Through wars and battles, and even now, she proudly stands. Yes, when mighty England withdrew her pressing hand, Through God Almighty, America came to shape this land.

From the hulls of the ships the cries could be heard, As mighty men sought God’s help from His Holy Word. From hours of praying and pages of scrolls they say, The Mayflower Compact was made with God that day.

So, Americans, be thankful you’re in the land of the Free, Instead of a land across the wide and rolling sea. Where there’s fighting and raging along every street, While in America, our peace is sure and liberty is sweet.

So, be glad my friend, as our precious flag waves high, That the Red, White, and Blue will forever part the sky. And, if one day, the skies do part and burst with thunder, Then, we’ll stand tall, and heed the call, and Ole’ Glory Won’t go U-N-D-E-R!

PS138V8

Ihave always believed that God provides everything we need. He may not answer our prayers in the ways we want or on the timelines we expect, but He does answer. And every now and then, in the midst of daily living, we are allowed a powerful glimpse of our Father’s hand at work.

I’ve certainly seen His hand in my life. One morning on my way to work, I was troubled and crying so hard I was heaving. Suddenly, a car swerved in front of me. I can’t tell you the make, model, or color of the car, but I’ll never forget the license plate: PS138V8—Psalm 138, Verse 8—which says, “The Lord will perfect that which concerns me” (KJV). Well, what else could I do but dry my eyes, blow my nose, and give a prayer of thanks to God?

He is present in the workplace, too.

My niece, a single mother of two, arrived at work not long ago with her gas tank on empty. “Okay, God,” she prayed at her desk. “You promised to take care of my needs, and I need gas!” Before my niece could complete her prayer, a coworker asked for a lift home that entire week. In exchange? The co-worker offered to fill up the gas tank.

God has been active in my co-workers’ lives as well. When I was on an out-of-town training assignment, a colleague became disoriented. Two other co-workers took her to the emergency room. One co-worker recognized her symptoms as those of a stroke, and the other knew just where to find the nearest hospital. My ailing colleague made a full recovery, and says we were her “angel family” placed by God in her path that day.

It warmed my heart recently to receive this voice message from my grown son: “God works in mysterious

ways,” he said. “I had been praying for some extra money for my business license and insurance, with no idea where it was going to come from. Today, I went to the mailbox and found a check for $2,000 from online classes I had dropped weeks after the refund date. But somehow, someway, the refund was processed and sent to me. Prayer is an amazing, amazing thing!” The assurance that your children know God is priceless.

I was most aware of God providing for my needs one December long ago. It was one of those months when there was more month than money, and I knew with Christmas just a week away, I wouldn’t have the means to buy presents for my young sons. I spent the night pondering ways to help them understand that the birth of Jesus Christ is the true meaning of Christmas and the only gift we need. The next morning, a friend from church called and said, “Just hear me out. My husband and I want to give you $250 to help with Christmas for your boys.” Through my tears, I whispered, “Thank you” to my friend—and to my Father.

It was I, not my sons, who needed to understand the true meaning of Christmas that year. I was reminded in a powerful way that God knows our needs more than we do. And, through the birth of Jesus Christ, He has a divine plan to provide for all of them—in ways that are beautifully clear to our humble human hearts.

We believe when people are equipped, motivated, and passionately engaged in living out their faith in Jesus Christ they have the potential to be world changers.

Our mission is to bring people into a dynamic relationship with Jesus Christ—a relationship that empowers them to see how God can work through individual personalities, situations, and talents. Christ was an activist, he did not neglect the needs of the people as He brought His message. We strive to encourage everyone to look more like Christ by reaching outside of themselves to serve the needs of others—at home, at school, in communities, and across the world.

Writer Guidelines:

Who: Our writers range from pastors, professors, and professional writers to stay at home moms and dads, business professionals, and others who have a desire to reach out to people through words of encouragement.

What: We believe that it is important to laugh together, praise each other, encourage one another, and to everyone, or from woman to woman, or man to man. We love to share recipes and family traditions as well. We ask that articles be kept to a 500 word maximum. We’d love to hear from you!

Where: Please send submissions to articles.goodnews@gmail.com

Why: Because God has not intended for us to just survive. We believe that we are intended to reach out to love and encourage each other. God has brought each of us through tough times, blessed us, and made the “impossible” possible. Let’s, together, share the love of Jesus Christ.

49 Pictures

How do you consolidate a person’s life into a mere 49 pictures? That’s the question I was asking myself a year ago after my mother passed from this life into eternity.

My dad, brother, and I had flipped through an assortment of old photo albums in an effort to find the perfect pictures that told the story of my mother’s seventyfive years’ worth of life that could be used in a video montage for her funeral. We spent hours looking at images of my mom as a young child, a graduate, a bride, a new mom, a teacher, a quilter, and a grandmother— to name just a few.

“There is an occasion for everything, and a time for every activity under heaven” (Ecclesiastes 3:1, HCSB). That verse had never been as meaningful to me until I sat there surrounded by hundreds of pictures that testified to this Biblical truth.

“…a time to give birth and a time to die…a time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance; a time to embrace and a time to avoid embracing…a time to tear and a time to sew; a time to love and a time to hate; a time for war and a time for peace.” (vs. 2-8).

Each picture revealed a “time to” moment in her life. Each smile, event or activity had been meaningful to her.

There was a story attached to every photograph. It was painfully difficult trying to whittle down hundreds of images to just a few that best portrayed her life.

In the end, we wound up with 49 pictures that we felt best summed up my mom. But in reality, she was so much more than those images could aptly convey. Aren’t we all? How can any of us feasibly condense our lives or anyone else’s into a few photographic prints? Obviously, we can’t. From birth to death, the breadth and depth of our lives are walked out in the accumulated seconds and minutes that make up the time we have been gifted on this earth. Ephesians 5:16 exhorts us to, “…make the most of our time…” Pictures can only capture moments. They’re not comprehensive of one’s life. Only God holds that ability— the ability to see our lives from beginning to end—and He encourages us to make the most of it.

Robin Williams’ character John Keating in the classic film Dead Poet’s Society spoke to the very heart of this when he said, “Carpe diem! Seize the day…make your lives extraordinary!”

How will you make your life extraordinary today?
