Getting Ready For Christmas So We Won’t Skip It

preached a sermon to the good and patient people of Garden Lakes Baptist Church a few years ago titled “Packing Up Christmas for Another Year.” In that discourse, I spoke of reading John Grisham’s wonderful novel, Skipping Christmas, the week before Christmas Day. A funny and insightful book, it was made into a movie, Christmas With the Kranks, in 2004, which I, along with my family, saw on Christmas Day that year. (If you’re considering seeing it, read the book first then view the screenplay). The book, as well as the movie, reveals that if one attempts to “skip Christmas” there may be enormous consequences. I really don’t worry that much about us skipping Christmas. But I do worry about us skipping Christmas. Just contradicted myself, didn’t I? Not really. We’ll go to crowded malls, and to the office parties, decorate the house, abuse the credit cards, and present gifts with, “If you don’t like it, you can exchange it.” That’s what I’ve told my beloved wife for years. It’s a good line. I’ll not be able to use it much longer, though. She’s started circling things in the catalog – sizes and all. Hint! Hint! No skipping out this year. What would it be like with no crowded malls, crazy office parties, decorating the house, out-of-control credit card use, and wondering whether it’s the right gift or not? Less stress? I doubt it. There would be something else to stress and distress us. Like maybe skipping Christmas? There are many reasons why I like Advent. It reminds me of the kingdom that’s not of this world. Derived from a Latin word meaning “coming” or “arrival,” Advent is a time of expectation. Always denoted by the four Sundays that precede Christmas Day, there can be as many as 28 days in this season and as few as 22. Beginning on December 3rd, this year has the lowest quantity of 22 days, which is symbolized by preparing for the coming or arrival of Christmas. Twentytwo days to get ready for Christmas? Yes. And our culture needs every one of them for the temptation to skip Christmas is great, even among the followers of Christ. But will we skip Christmas? It is so tempting in this secularized culture. And you and I have contributed to

6 // December 2023

its secularization. The enticement of materialism can be devastating. It can lead to forgetting there was a virgin, bearing the name Mary, and her fiancé, Joseph, a man of integrity and devotion, spending the night in a stable. It’s tempting to skip the manger part where a Baby was placed. There were shepherds, the low-lifes of the day, who heard angels announcing the birth and saw those bewildering

messengers from God. The shepherds, along with family members, gathered to see the Child in a mother’s arms in a remote village in the Judean Hills. That’s Christmas. None of us can really afford to skip that either. So, don’t. Go ahead and read Grisham’s book. Watch the movie. Be sure to read that other Book, too. The one called the Bible – especially Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Interestingly, those guys say much more about “the coming of Jesus,” the first one and the second one– reflecting on the first and longing for the second–and how we are to live, than it does about His actual birth. But it is His birth for which we prepare in these Advent days and rightly so. Take the time to unpack Christmas for another season. Savor the mystery during these 22 days. Don’t skip it. It certainly won’t skip us. About The Author

What is your Social Security Risk Score? with

Money Matters Rick Hughes Driven by a passion to educate, inform and prepare future retirees, Mr. Hughes founded Hughes Retirement Group in 2007. His main interest is helping his clients in reducing their taxes.

D

ID YOU KNOW? The average household could lose $700 a month in retirement income if Social Security is reduced. Currently, the CBO is projecting that

by 2033, they will automatically have to cut Social Security Benefits by 23% across the board. Social Security, like any government program, is not immune to potential risks and challenges. Here are some of the key risks associated with the current Social Security system: • Demographic Changes: One of the most significant challenges is demographic shifts, including the aging of the population. As the Baby Boomer generation retires, there are fewer workers contributing to the system for each retiree, which can strain the program's finances. • Funding Shortfalls: Social Security is financed primarily through payroll taxes paid by current workers. If there are not enough workers to support the increasing number of retirees, the program may face funding shortfalls. The Social Security Trustees have projected that the program's trust funds could be depleted in the coming decades if no action is taken to address this issue. • Economic Conditions: Economic downturns can reduce the amount of payroll tax revenue collected by Social Security. In periods of high unemployment, there are fewer workers paying into the system, which can exacerbate funding problems. • Political and Policy Changes: Social Security is a politically sensitive issue, and changes in government policies or the structure of the program can impact its sustainability. Policymakers may choose to adjust benefit levels, retirement ages, or tax rates to address financial challenges, which can have implications for retirees.

10 // December 2023

• Increased Longevity: While longer life expectancy is generally a positive development, it poses a financial challenge for Social Security. People are living longer, which means they receive benefits for a more extended period. This places additional strain on the program's finances. • Inflation: Inflation erodes the purchasing power of Social Security benefits. If inflation rates are high and benefits are not adjusted accordingly, retirees may find it increasingly challenging to cover their living expenses. • Healthcare Costs: The rising cost of healthcare can impact retirees' overall financial well-being. Medicare, which is closely linked to Social Security, also faces financial challenges. High healthcare expenses can put pressure on retirees' budgets. • Public Opinion and Trust: Public perception and trust in the Social Security system can affect its stability. If people lose faith in the system's ability to provide for them in retirement, it could lead to changes in policy or even a reduced willingness to pay into the system. • Moral Hazard: In some cases, the existence of a safety net like Social Security may discourage individuals from saving for their own retirement, potentially exacerbating the program's funding issues. It's important to note that the Social Security system has faced challenges and modifications in the past, and it's likely to see changes in the future to address these risks. Individuals planning for retirement should consider these potential risks and develop a comprehensive financial plan to supplement their Social Security benefits. A key component of this plan is to know your Social Security Risk Score. This score can help assess the likelihood of and effects of benefits cuts happening to you. Give us a call today to go over your Social Security Risk Score!

By becoming one with humanity, God made it possible for His light to live within us. No longer would God only be viewed as being separate from mankind. The Message puts it this way in John 1:14, “The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood. We saw the glory with our own eyes, the one-of-a-kind glory, like Father, like Son, Generous inside and out, true from start to finish.” Sometimes our world can get very dark. It might be the betrayal of a friend, an economic reversal, a distressing medical diagnosis, or the death of someone close to us. Shadows threaten to overwhelm us. We might wonder where God is in all of this. We need to be reminded as the Message puts it, God has “moved into our neighborhood.”

Gò0dNews for Marriage

Like the Cardinals by Tammy Madden

O

You see in marriage you have to be able to hold onto each other through anything. No matter what, you have to be willing to say I’m sorry even if it was not your fault. In today’s society, you see so many young couples who think divorce is the answer to the smallest argument. Marriage is a lifetime commitment! Matthew 19:6 NIV says, “So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” You see no matter what happens nothing should come between you. God gave each of us a “helpmate.” It is during this

I didn't know how to tell him I loved him and I didn't know how to "ask" my big brother if he was OK with it. Oh, but it happened over time and my brother was, I think...happier than us. I have to laugh when I think of those days. Over the last 40 years, we have been homeless. We have had beautiful homes. We have driven an old rusty beat up Vega that barely had a floorboard and we have also driven brand new cars. We have been without a child for the first 17 years of our life together and then we have been blessed with a beautiful daughter.

Gò0dNews for Parents

What is Christmas All About? n 2015, A Charlie Brown Christmas aired on national prime time television for the 50th time. In a world where the latest greatest technology is outdated in a matter of months, and social media trends come and go in a matter of days, 50 years of anything becomes quite meaningful. I am a fan of all things nostalgic and all things Christmas. So, when the two are combined I am hooked, and the Charlie Brown Christmas special falls squarely into that category. For many families watching the Charlie Brown Christmas movie is part of their family traditions. It is a presentation that both children and adults can easily relate to and realize the real meaning of Christmas. If you have not made this a part of your Christmas tradition, I suggest this is one that you may want to begin. The big question of the movie is, “Does anyone really know the real meaning of Christmas”? As Charlie Brown is frustrated and asked the question in Linus’ presence, he quickly responds, which has become a highlight of that movie. Linus replies he knows and proceeds to the stage and quotes the scripture from Luke 2. There is one important thing I did not notice about the movie until recently. Charlie Brown is best known for his uniquely striped shirt, and Linus is most associated with his ever-present security blanket. Throughout the story of Peanuts, Lucy, Snoopy, Sally, and others all work to no avail to separate Linus from his blanket. And even though his security blanket remains a major source of ridicule for the otherwise mature and thoughtful Linus, he simply refuses to give it up. That is until this moment when he simply drops it. In that climactic scene when Linus shares “what Christmas is all about,” he drops his security blanket, and I am now

convinced that this is intentional. Most telling is the specific moment he drops it: when he utters the words, “fear not.” As I reflect on it now, Charles Schultz was intentional in making a statement, and it is so simple, yet it is so brilliant. The birth of Jesus separates us from our fears. The birth of Jesus frees us from the habits we are unable (or unwilling) to break ourselves. The birth of Jesus allows us to simply drop the false security we have been grasping so tightly and learn to trust and cling to Him instead. Right in the middle of speaking, Linus drops the blanket.

24 // December 2023

The world of 2023 can be a scary place, and many of us find ourselves grasping something temporal for security, whatever that thing may be. The era of 2023 is a world in which it is exceedingly difficult for us to “fear not.” But amid fear and insecurity, this simple cartoon image from 1965 continues to live on as an inspiration for us to seek peace and security in the one place it has always been, in Jesus’ care for us. This Christmas enable your family a “fear not” experience as you instruct your children about the birth of Jesus. Parents, here are some conversation sparkers based on this article: • Has your family read through Luke 2? Make a special time to do this. Point out key features and events. • What if your family used clothing, sheets, etc to dress up and act out the Christmas story in Luke 2? Take photos or live stream to share. • Talk about the security we have in Jesus. Ask your little ones what fears they have. Explain how we can have peace and confidence that Jesus is always with us. Instructions Prepare the Apples: • Wash and core the apples, leaving the skin on for texture and flavor. • Slice the apples horizontally into thin rounds, about 1/4 inch thick. Prepare the Filling: • In a mixing bowl, combine the shredded sharp cheddar cheese, finely diced country ham, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, chopped green onions, black pepper, paprika, and a pinch of salt. Mix until all ingredients are well incorporated. Assemble the Stackers: • Lay half of the apple slices on a serving platter or individual appetizer plates. • Spoon a generous portion of the cheese and ham mixture onto each apple slice. Create Stacks: • Top each stack with another apple slice to create a sandwich-like appearance. Gently press them together to hold the filling. Garnish: • Sprinkle chopped fresh parsley over the top of each stack for a pop of color and fresh flavor. Serve: • Arrange the apple stackers on a platter, surrounding them with crackers or slices of baguette for a delightful presentation.

nd it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was

governor of Syria.) 3

And all went to be taxed, everyone into his own city.

4

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days

were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7

And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped

him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. 8

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding

in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9

And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the

glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I

bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of

the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace,

goodwill toward men. 15

And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away

And they came with haste and found Mary, and

And when they had seen it, they made known abroad

Where’s the “Zing?” by Sandra Gilmore

one recognizing your part. There’s just no zing to speak of. So why try? We can take a lesson from Joseph in the Christmas story. In Scripture, only a few of his actions are recorded and his words are not recorded at all. We know very little about him. What we do know is that after the Christmas account, he is seldom mentioned again. Even then, he’s not mentioned with any elaboration. (Where was the zing?) Even history and folklore haven’t embellished on his profile! Let’s face it: we know from modern family life, if the Joseph Nativity set figurine gets broken or chipped, nobody cries on Christmas Eve. So how can his testimony help us today? What do we know for certain about Joseph? • He heard from God directly. • He obeyed God without debate or hesitation. • He was the only human being ever given the assignment of step-parenting the Son of God. • He took on Mary’s situation, gossip and all. • His dedication continued because we heard of him again at the Temple when Jesus was 12 years old. • We see his unwavering commitment to the Lord and to his family. Joseph displayed faith, dedication, and commitment as he led his family. He knew Jesus would be the Living Hope (see 1 Peter 1:3) and the Hope of Glory (see Colossians 1:27). And yet, Jesus needed a stable home life in which to grow in stature, wisdom, and in favor with God and man (see Luke 2:52). Scripture records not a word about Joseph or Jesus during the growing years. Whether these years were too mundane to write about or were simply honored as private, we know nothing of them from the Bible. Joseph never started a podcast, authored a book, or

space, and even your thoughts. These fences help you maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle, especially during emotionally charged times like the holidays. The Wisdom of Boundaries According to the Bible For Health and Relationships: The Bible offers timeless guidance on why boundaries matter. Take Proverbs 25:28 (ESV) which says, “A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.” When you make your boundaries clear to the people around you, you cultivate relationships built on mutual respect and trust. For Self-Confidence: Another biblical gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and selfcontrol.” By setting boundaries, we align ourselves with our values and protect our well-being. This boosts our selfconfidence and ability to assert ourselves. Four Ways to Set Boundaries During the Holidays Know Your Limits: Setting boundaries starts with selfawareness. For example, if you know hosting a large family gathering will exhaust you both mentally and financially, it might be time to opt for a smaller, more intimate celebration. Clear and Respectful Communication: You don't have to tiptoe around your needs. Use straightforward "I" statements to express yourself. Here are some revamped examples that are easy to say and understand:

The Power of ‘No’: Sometimes, a simple 'no' is the most effective boundary you can set. You don't need to offer a lengthy explanation because ‘No’ is a complete sentence. Celebrate Your Courage: It takes bravery to set boundaries. Give yourself some credit for standing up for what you need. If someone reacts negatively, remember that they might be used to benefiting from your lack of boundaries. Setting boundaries is like a muscle—the more you practice, the stronger you become. This holiday season, empower yourself with these boundaries and make the celebrations enjoyable and meaningful for you. About The Author
