Canceling Disinformation

Astartling trend of late involves government and corporate pressure to limit the ability to discuss ideas that someone else might disagree with. Speech that used to be considered a First Amendment right seems now to be a potential reason the speaker could be canceled. Regardless of our thoughts on current political maneuvers, the spread of disinformation began long ago in heaven. Lucifer, being granted the highest position a created being could hold, decided that wasn’t good enough. He determined to set himself up above the King of the universe, God Himself (Isaiah 14:12-14; Ezekiel 28:1215; Revelation 12:7-9).
The Bible tells us that Satan convinced one-third of the angelic host to accept his word over the word of their loving Creator (Revelation 12:4). Imagine the power of the lies Satan must have told to convince perfect angels living in a perfect environment that his government would be superior to that of Jesus Christ. And as soon as the rebels were kicked out of heaven, they came to earth and began the exact same pattern of deception, leading to the fall of humanity (Revelation 12:12).
Satan told Eve the lies he had used to convince other angels to rebel. “God’s word can’t be trusted.” “There is no real consequence for sin.” “God is holding back something good from you because He is selfish.” “You can be like God, you can be holy apart from God and His law, if you will follow me” (Genesis 3:1-5).
Satan’s greatest weapon has always been deception. That was true in heaven. It will be true to the end of time (John 8:44; Revelation 20:7-10). Conversely, God’s greatest weapon will always be truth: unadulterated, transparent truth (John 14:6; John 17:17; Ephesians 6:12, 17). Satan had attacked the character of God, trying to convince the earth and the watching universe that his government had their best interests in mind while painting God as a selfish tyrant. But Christ came to demonstrate the love of God, first in His ministry and then by His sacrifice (John 1:1-5, 9-14; John 14:9-11; 2 Corinthians 5:21).
The cross of Calvary dispelled the darkness and confusion. The infinite contrast of character between Satan’s absolute desire for self-exaltation and Christ’s absolute selfsacrifice to save lost sinners was eternally solidified on that lonely hill (Isaiah 14:12-14; Philippians 2:5-8).
The Bible tells us that just before Jesus returns, Satan will again attack the world with an overwhelming religious deception (Matthew 24:4-5, 11, 23-24). The world will be swept away, believing the lie (2 Thessalonians 2:9-12; Revelation 12:9; Revelation 13:8).
How does Jesus want Christians to dispel disinformation? Uplift Christ. Uplift the cross of Calvary. “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself” (John 12:32). Be living witnesses of the saving power of the blood of Jesus Christ (Romans 12:1).
Truth will one day eternally cancel disinformation (Ezekiel 28:17-19). Until that day, may our every thought, word, and act uplift and magnify Jesus Christ, the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
