OPEN EVENING 2013 On Wednesday 2 October we held another successful Open Evening, welcoming approximately 1000 guests to have a look at our facilities and meet with staff and students. It was an enjoyable evening for all involved, many parents commented on how well our prefects had looked after them and how articulate and welcoming they were. The range of activities on offer really engaged the students who are considering us for their secondary school and there was a real buzz throughout the entire event.

LETTERS OF PEACE COMPETITION When Miss Green told us we would be writing letters for peace, I had no idea what to do. She said we could write to anyone, alive or dead, asking for peace. Quickly I ran through my list of people I admire, and decided that I had to write to an astronaut. Who to choose? I went for Buzz Aldrin in the end, because seeing Earth from the Moon must give you a unique perspective of wars and petty disagreements between humans.

When I’d finished, Miss Green seemed impressed. At the time, this did not seem to count for much, and so I forgot about it, until a few weeks later. It turned out that one letter had got through the competition, which surely couldn’t be mine?

It was. I was slightly embarrassed at first, mainly because I am most certainly not used to being the centre of attention.

My letter did fairly well in the competition, getting to the intermediate final. I was pleased, but again, I forgot about it. On an otherwise average Thursday, Miss Green wanted to see me, which is never normally a good sign. I was handed an envelope, which had inside a certificate, and, surprisingly, a book voucher, for £25. I am very pleased with it, and will soon be off to the nearest Waterstones for a browse!

MURDER MYSTERY EVENING Oakham Castle formed an excellent backdrop for the Murder Mystery Evening which some of our students were recently involved in. Over 50 people came to enjoy the evening and solve the mystery of who the murderer was. Seven Catmose College students from the Year 11 GCSE Drama Group performed at the event which was organised with Rutland Library Service. Emily Buckle, James Carter, Amber Goddard and Charlie Lewin were the suspects – all attendees at a Writers Course where the victim was murdered. The proceedings of the evening were led by Detective Jemima Feely and P.C. Chloe Furner. P.C. Charlie Watt enlightened the audience further with the Forensic report of the murder. During the interval the audience had the opportunity to ask the suspects questions based on their statements before making their guesses. At the end of the evening the murderer was revealed and prizes were awarded. Well done and thank you to the students who took part in this very successful event.

PHANTOM LOVE At the end of 2012 the Performing Arts department were approached about the possibility of staging a musical ‘Phantom Love’ by a local play wright Tracey Horsey. The musical is set in the trenches during World War One and follows the story of a soldier and his wife corresponding during the war. The soldiers talk and sing honestly about the reality of war and their hopes and dreams.

2014 is the 100th Anniversary of the Commemoration of the start of World War One and so this is a very timely production. Six Year 10 and 11 students play the roles of the soldiers: Sam Burns, James Carter, Dougie Hempkin, Charlie Lewin, Charlie Watt and Alberto Serio. Louisa Orchard (Year 10) plays the only female role of Anna, the wife of Jim Savage (Charlie Watt).

The opportunity has arisen for the cast to perform this musical on the main stage at Curve Theatre in Leicester. On Tuesday 4 February, 2014 the cast will spend the day at the Theatre. The morning will be spent dealing with technical requirements working with the lighting and sound crew at Curve followed by two performances, one in the afternoon and one in the evening.

KINGSWOOD - STUDENT REPORT Everybody had to be at school by 7:15 for the 1 hour and 30 minute bus journey. On the bus everybody found something to do like chatting or listening to music. When we arrived at Kingswood everybody got really excited and all wanted to get out and look around, then an instructor came on and we were put into three groups S, T and U. First of all everybody did orienteering where we got a map in our groups and we had to find certain places. U won with T in second place and S in third place - it was really difficult because we had to go round and find numbers. I was in group T. After the orienteering we went to the crate stacking where we were told about safety in the active area. We went in pairs and the activity was all about team building and everybody had to help out building a tower. It was really fun because when we had run out of time the people in harnesses got to kick over all of the crates and then everybody else had to clear them as fast as possible otherwise there was a forfeit.

Next we had lunch it was burgers and chips it was really fun because everybody was chatting and having fun whilst eating there was also a large range of salad to pick for our lunch.

Team tech came next and we split into two groups we had a bag of giant meccano and the first challenge was getting everything out of the bag and arranging it neatly on the floor. We then had to use every piece of meccano to make a box but we had to hold the box up by a piece of rope and we ran around with them and did the box test then we had to sort it out again and pack it away. My team, team tiger, beat team zombies.

Then all of the three groups joined together to do Jacobs Ladder which is basically a massive ladder and the gaps get bigger every time. Not many people got to the top it was really difficult because we went up in fours so the ladder was shaking Eloise Green 7M

GEORGE GRIFFITHS - WORLD CHAMPION

LEICESTER TIGER TRIALS

This year’s annual WAK-1 World Cup took place between 3 - 6 October in Riga, Latvia. The competition involves Thai boxing fighters aged 9 to 35. The discipline involves kicks, punches, elbows and knees to score points in order to beat the opponent.

Four Catmose College students have been selected to attend a number of training sessions for the opportunity to join the Leicester Tigers Junior Squad. Connor Boylan, Daniel Cousens, Bradley Johnson and Ashley Brewis were selected by their clubs, due to their rugby success over the past year. If they are selected they will be chosen to represent their county by playing for the Tigers, helping them on their way to achieve their goal of becoming professional rugby players; they all have the ambition to one day play for the British Lions, England and the Tigers adult squad. They say that their sporting hero is Matt Hampson because even though he can no longer play, he still coaches and helps others through his charity foundation.

Year 9 Catmose College student, George Griffiths, represented the UK for his age group and has returned home very proudly sporting a gold medal and the title World K1 Champion. It was his fourth attempt at winning the title, previously coming second.

George is a member of Assassins Muay Thai from Melton, which has produced some world class fighters that now include George. For the event he was very dedicated and trained solidly for six weeks, he said that all he did was college, train, eat and sleep.

CROSS COUNTRY SATURDAY 28 SEPTEMBER: The second Rutland and Leicestershire cross country race was held on a beautiful day at Rutland Water.

Harvey Seel ran in the Year 7 race and finished 16th.

In the Junior races Jacob Worthington, Ben Buckby and Sam Conboy finished 44th, 48th and 50th and were running against boys who were a year older then them. Alice Lucas again competing against the year above her age, finished 25th, the same position as her last race. Amy Saville had a strong run, finishing in the top 20 in 16th position.

Fourteen students from Year 10 who are studying for their Sports Leaders Level 2 award turned up to help marshal the course; their help is really appreciated as the event would have been more difficult to organise. They were all punctual, responsible and extremely encouraging to the athletes.

SATURDAY 12 OCTOBER: For this event we entered a Year 7 girls team in the County Schools relay at Thomas Estley Community College in Broughton Astley. The girls ran extremely well despite it being a cold wet morning. The final positions were very close and the girls finished 7th overall. Well done to Bethany Blazey, Charlotte Lemon, Samantha Rodgers and Jenny Sennett.

The next individual or team race is on the 16 November at Lutterworth College and High School just off junction 20 of the M1. I am hoping that we will have a few more participants and if anyone is interested, please speak to me for more details.

TABLE TENNIS On 8 October, Catmose College played the Melton and Rutland Table-Tennis tournament for points towards the Varsity League. There were four competitions: (Under 15 girls, Under 13 girls, Under 15 boys, Under 13 boys). Catmose College players have been training most lunchtimes this term and finished with some great results. We won the under 13 boys and girls and the under 15 girls competition. We finished second in the under 15 boys competition. We gained a massive 23 points towards the Varsity League which has put us in first place. Well done to all that took part.

We won 5 out of 5 games and have now secured top of the league places for Year 7,8 and 9 teams as long as we win against Belvoir next week. Well done to all girls that took part. We have now won 16 games out of 20 played.

HOUSE SCRAMBLE We recently had our annual house scramble, which takes place during lessons. All students in the school were involved and they had to run as many laps of a set course in fifteen minutes.

To ensure the scramble was fair the total number of laps was then divided by the total amount of students in the house. The students had to work as a team to get as many laps as they could have a chance of winning the overall house points.
