HARBOUR IMPRESSION Studio 3B: Sydney Harbour Opera House 2023 semester 2 Individual Work Studio Coordinator: Ross Anderson Tutor: Mano Ponnambalam mano.ponnambalam@sydney.edu.au

My project seeks to address the historical narrative of Sydney Harbour, as well as exploring the delicate equilibrium between human civilization and the natural ecosystem. A floating theater suspended above Sydney Harbour serves as the centerpiece, with its floating route connecting Sydney's colonial history to the ecological evolution of the harbor. The design of the theater draws inspiration from the container ships that once populated Sydney Harbour.

There are two theaters, catering to different performance types and time requirements. The larger theater hosts Shakespeare's play "The Tempest," where the magic within the play symbolizes the mechanical civilization brought by European colonizers. The protagonist of the play represents colonial rule, seizing control of the small island and turning its original inhabitants into servants. This narrative mirrors Australia's colonial history and the experiences of indigenous people. Ultimately, the magic is destroyed and the protagonist left the island, forgiving those who once betrayed him and setting and the original inhabitants free.

During the day, visitors can access the theater via ferries, and the smaller theater hosts various street performances, enhancing the overall tourist experience. As night falls, the floating theater sways with the waves, creating an illusion of the isolated island escaping the city's hustle and bustle.

The louvre wall turn on and off depend on the scene and location, when the louvre open, the ocean scene become an extension of stage

Prospero is telling his daughter Miranda the story of his past. At this moment, the theater is moving toward bradley head, the louvre wall on the side turns off to create an intimate space for storytelling in cooporate with the scene

WHEN YOU ARE OLD Studio 2B: Older Women Housing 2022 semester 2 Individual Work Studio Coordinator: Michael Muir Tutor: Ines Benavente ines.benaventemolina@sydney.edu.au Location: Inner West Sydney

My project, "When You Are Old," addresses the current housing crisis in Australia, specifically focusing on older women who are at risk of homelessness due to the lack of suitable and affordable housing options. Through client studies, it was evident that these women come from diverse cultural backgrounds and have often experienced challenging life circumstances. Therefore, the primary goal of the project is to create a community that is inclusive and provides a sense of safety both physically and mentally for these older women.

To cater to the diversity of their needs, the design incorporates multiple living types to choose from. Some may prefer independent living, while others may desire a sense of community through co-living arrangements. Drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese housing, the design approach emphasizes communal participation alongside private living spaces, offering a balance between shared and individual experiences.

By incorporating elements of Japanese housing design, the project aims to create a sense of community that embraces and includes everyone, allowing older women from different cultural backgrounds to feel welcome and valued. The goal is to provide housing options that not only meet their practical needs but also promote social interaction, well-being, and a sense of belonging within the community.

This project aims to investigate the coexistence of two distinct programs, a war memorial and a martial art dojo, within a building located in the dense Sydney CBD. By j uxtapos i ng the concepts of s of tnes s and s ti ff nes s , the goal is to create a harmonious balance between these two programs within the building.

Merriam-webster defines war as a state of open armed conflict between states or nation, martial art as an art of combat and conflict. These two programs both deal with confrontation, but in two distinct ways. One gentle, the other violent.

Through conceptual material study, fabric and stone represent martial art dojo and war memorial respectively.

The idea that stone can wear through fabric, fabric can cover stone has revealed a sense of mutually restriction and confrontation. Translating to architectural language as straight and curved lines to indicate the stiffness of stone and the softness of fabric.

This project was a part of our professional practice course, where we were tasked with creating a development application for the renovation of a terrace house located at 25 Gibbes St, Newtown. The primary goal was not only to focus on architectural design but also to gain a comprehensive understanding of the real-world architectural practice, particularly understanding the Council code and client's requirements.

Our primary focus revolved around adhering to the Development Control Plan (DCP) requirements, which includes aspects such as height limitations, heritage conservation areas, private open spaces, and solar access.

Regarding our design decisions, we employed a set of strategies aimed at maximizing solar access, creating extensive landscaping areas, and promoting environmental sustainability.
