KEEW EHT FO KOOB

INSIDE THIS EDITION

THE BOY, THE MOLE, THE FOX AND THE HORSE - CHARLIE MACKESY I've recommended this book before, but in the current climate I feel it's worthy of another plug! This lovely book is full of beautiful illustrations and inspirational messages. Winner of the Waterstones Book of the Year 2019, it is the story of four unusual friends who share a deep bond. Uplifting and moving in equal measure, this book reminds us that acts of kindness and compassion are never wasted.

WHY ‘DIGITAL DOWNTIME’ MATTERS If your eyes are anything like mine, they’re maybe feeling a bit tired from the increase in screen time caused by remote learning and keeping in touch with friends and family through social media and video calls. But did you know that screen time can also have an impact on your brain function and sleep? Here are a few tips to help you relax and unwind. Take care of your eyes by giving yourself regular breaks from the screen. Use the 20-20-20 rule: take a 20 second break every 20 minutes, and look at something 20 feet away. Stand up, breathe deeply, have a stretch and roll your shoulders too. Schedule time to check your social media accounts, and put your phone away or switch it on to airplane mode outside these times. It’s easy to become distracted – one minute you’re reading a WhatsApp, and the next you’ve disappeared down the rabbit hole of Instagram… Daily fresh air and a dose of exercise and nature can be a real mood-booster, as well as a necessary antidote to hunching over screens! Our screens emit blue light which disrupts the production of melatonin, a hormone that helps us sleep. Switch off your devices at least an hour before bed, and avoid the temptation to look at them as soon as you wake up! Read a book! The escapism provided by reading has shown to be one of the most effective ways to decrease stress levels – just 6 minutes of reading can release muscle tension and slow the heart rate. Try not to use a backlit device if you're reading just before bed (see above!).
