Gospel Luke 21:25-28, 34-36 Jesus said to his disciples: ‘There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars; on earth nations in agony, bewildered by the clamour of the ocean and its waves; men dying of fear as they await what menaces the world, for the powers of heaven will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand erect, hold your heads high, because your liberation is near at hand.

‘Watch yourselves, or your hearts will be coarsened with debauchery and drunkenness and the cares of life, and that day will be sprung on you suddenly, like a trap. For it will come down on every living man on the face of the earth. Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to survive all that is going to happen, and to stand with confidence before the Son of Man.’

Reflecting on the Gospel Most of us look for meaning in the signs and events of daily life. We wonder how God might be acting in our lives. Was this a chance meeting with an old friend, or part of something greater? Was it a coincidence that I was thinking of this person when I received a call from him or her? Did the inclement weather keep me at home so I was able to spend time with my family? Not only we, but generations of those who have gone before us, discerned meaning in the events of daily life.

The ancient pagan Romans looked at the sky for omens, and read the entrails of slaughtered chickens to discern how the gods were acting in their world.

The gospel reading for today gives the reader signs that will accompany the end times, the coming of the Son of Man. But we would be mistaken if we took these passages literally. And it’s certainly true that hundreds if not thousands of people have done just that – looked for these signs to be fulfilled literally.

The message of this passage sought to give hope to a beleaguered people, the Christians, who anticipated their redemption. Many of them desperately wanted to see the coming of the Son of Man who would establish justice and peace. Many of the early Christians were on the bottom of the social ladder, experiencing tribulations and trials. Jesus himself had faced a violent end at the hands of the state. The Christians needed to be reminded that their salvation would come, and that they also needed to be vigilant, watching for that same salvation. And at the time this gospel was written there were many other Christians who may have lost hope or grown weary of waiting. This message was for them; and the message is also for us.

For us, the watching for the coming of the Son of Man has been not merely decades, as it was for the early Christians, but two millennia! Do we really believe that the end is near? that Jesus might return any day? It might be more worthwhile for me to imagine my own personal end (death) rather than the end of the world. In that way, it might be easier to see that my own personal end could catch me by surprise ‘like a trap’. And when I live with the expectation that my end is near, or at least unknown, it can be easier for daily anxieties to dissipate. This is not to say we have no cares for the world, but rather, we have our eyes set on something greater as we live by a different set of values. Ideally, we serve more than we are served; we give more than we receive. And in that way we imitate Christ, whose disciples we are.

Living the Paschal Mystery How would I live today if I knew it was my last day on the earth? What priorities would guide my choices and decisions? The church gives us the reading from Luke to start this Advent season in part so that we might call to mind the ‘end times’ and the concurrent coming of the Son of Man. When our minds are drowning in lists, shopping, groceries, and gifts, we might pause, raise our head above these pressing concerns, and reflect from another point of view. In the end, what does it all mean? What is driving my actions and behaviours? Am I

watchful, vigilant for the Lord’s coming? And what would such watchfulness look like? The dying and rising of Christ gives meaning to my own personal death and resurrection each season, when I set aside my own desires and aims and focus on something eternal, something lasting. It is then that we recall the relationships forged and celebrated on this earth endure forever. The coming of the Son of Man means death to an old way of life, and resurrection of hope and life everlasting.

Focusing the Gospel Key words and phrases: When these things begin to take place, stand erect, hold your heads high, because your liberation is near at hand.

To the point: We begin a new church year with a gospel that seems intent upon shocking and startling us out of complacency. Jesus speaks of signs that will accompany the coming of the Son of Man. These signs are so terrifying that people are ‘dying of fear’, and yet, in the midst of it, we hear a word of hope: though these calamities may occur, ‘stand erect, hold your heads high, because your liberation is near at hand’. To prepare for this redemption, Jesus counsels us to be vigilant in waiting and in prayer.

Connecting the Gospel to the first reading: The prophet Jeremiah also preaches a word of hope, this time to the people of Israel in exile in Babylon. Even though they have seen their homeland taken over by foreign armies and their temple destroyed, Jeremiah reminds the people that their God has not forgotten them. Indeed, ‘the days are coming – it is the Lord who speaks – when I am going to fulfil the promise I made to the House of Israel and the House of Judah’. to experience: Jeremiah proclaims that God has a plan for Judah to be saved and for Jerusalem to dwell in safety. When we hear these words of comfort, taken together with today’s gospel that speaks of calamities and dismay, we can know that the God of Jeremiah and Jesus, our God, is one who desires peace and for all people to dwell in safety. How might we preach peace, safety, and hope when we encounter panic, chaos, and despair?

PROMPTS FOR FAITH-SHARING

What is an action or practice of preparation you can embrace this Advent? It could be an action of preparing for Christmas, preparing for Jesus’s second coming, or preparing our world to become more like the kingdom of God.

As Christians living in the year 2018 we realise that our own personal end will likely come before the second coming of Jesus.

Thinking about your own mortality, how would you live this coming year if you knew it was your last on earth?

Advent is a time of preparation and a time of waiting. What spiritual practices make waiting fruitful for you?

Connecting the Responsorial Psalm to the readings: The theme of hope and trust is evident in today’s psalm. The psalmist prays, ‘Lord, teach me your paths. / Make me walk in your truth, and teach me: / for you are God my saviour’. Like the prophet Jeremiah, the psalmist proclaims the constancy of God who is eager to guide the humble along the path of life. And how might we characterise this path of life in its essence? In the second reading, Paul, writing to the community in Thessalonica, gives us a clue. He concludes a prayer for their community by stating, ‘May the Lord be generous in increasing your love and make you love one another and the whole human race’. This abounding love will strengthen the hearts of the community and shape them in holiness. It is abounding love that will allow them (and us) to stand erect to greet the Son of Man when he comes.

Though today’s gospel can seem disturbing, we are called to be people of hope and joy.

As a Christian, how do you preach safety, peace, and hope when you encounter panic, chaos, and despair?

We are called to a practice of waiting within Advent – to live in the here and now, and also to yearn and work for the coming of the kingdom of God in its fulness. Homily Points • Advent is a season of preparation. We prepare our hearts and homes to celebrate the feast of Christmas. We prepare spiritually to greet Christ when he comes again. And we also look to how we can prepare our world to become more and more like the kingdom of God where love and justice rule. Advent is a time when we live this preparation in an intentional manner, but waiting and preparing are constant hallmarks of the Christian life.

• In the second reading, the apostle Paul reminds us that we have never arrived in this life. Our preparation is never complete. He exhorts the community in Thessalonica that even as they are conducting themselves in a way pleasing to God, that they ‘make more and more progress’. The conduct that Paul calls the community to is one that has abounding love as its foundation and guide. As Christians, we never have a reason to be bored or complacent. Our work is never finished as we collaborate with Jesus in building a kingdom of love and peace.

• Despite the foreboding nature of our gospel reading today, as Christians we believe in a radical promise – that light is stronger than darkness, love is stronger than hate, and life is stronger than death. We are called to be signs of hope in a world at times overcome with fear. As we begin the physical preparations for Christmas by lighting our Advent wreaths, buying gifts, planning our feasts and parties for the Christmas season, let us also consider, how might we prepare ourselves to be light, love, and life to those around us?

Pause for silent prayer Grant your faithful, we pray, almighty God, the resolve to run forth to meet your Christ with righteous deeds at his coming, so that, gathered at his right hand, they may be worthy to possess the heavenly Kingdom.

See, the days are coming – it is the Lord who speaks – when I am going to fulfil the promise I made to the House of Israel and the House of Judah: ‘In those days and at that time, I will make a virtuous Branch grow for David, who shall practise honesty and integrity in the land.

You have not forgotten the instructions we gave you on the authority of the Lord Jesus.

About Liturgy Be vigilant: We may be able to control our own personal practices and even our parish culture, but we will never be able to control how other people observe the weeks leading up to Christmas. We can ensure that we omit the Gloria at Mass during Advent (except for solemnities, weddings, and confirmation), but people will still sing and play Christmas songs in their households and social gatherings. No matter how long you refrain from putting up your own Christmas tree, many others will have theirs fully decorated in November! And no amount of preaching will convince the majority of your parishioners that they should be spending more time in quiet prayer than in shopping for gifts and going to Christmas parties.

As much as we want all Christians to keep prayerful, sober watch in anticipation of the coming of the Lord, we cannot become ‘Advent police’, because the exhortation to vigilance goes both ways. We, too, must be vigilant that our behaviour and attitudes help us with ‘increasing [our] love and make [us] love one another and the whole human race’ (1 Thess 3:12). One way you can do this is to learn and participate in some of the Advent practices of cultures that are different from yours. For many Hispanic and Asian communities, Advent is a time of prayer and parties, of joyful music and quiet contemplation. There is a beautiful grace, too, in this kind of waiting for the day of the Lord.

As those who help shape the unique spirit of Advent in our communities, let us help one another be attentive to God’s presence all around us so that our hearts may not become ‘coarsened with the cares of life’.

About Initiation Today is not a beginning: Although today is the beginning of the new liturgical year, it is not the beginning of RCIA. There is no formal ‘beginning’ to the first period of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, which is the period of evangelisation and precatechumenate. We should be evangelising all year long and be ready to meet seekers every day of the year! To help your community understand that evangelisation is year-round and to avoid any misconception that catechumens are formed on a school-year calendar, do not schedule a Rite of Acceptance for this Sunday. Instead, plan to celebrate it a few times during Ordinary Time throughout the year.

About Liturgical Music Metre and melody: Because the Advent season is so short, it is a good time to incorporate seasonal songs that are used every Sunday of Advent. This helps your assembly become more familiar with the music over the weeks, especially if you may have more visitors and newcomers this time of year. It also sets a musical ‘environment’ that is both constant and developing. One way to strike this balance is to use a seasonal hymn tune for the entrance song, such as CONDITOR ALME SIDERUM (more correctly CREATOR ALME SIDERUM), and each week pair it with different texts. To do this, find texts that match the tune’s metre, which is LM (or 88 88, meaning there are four phrases of eight syllables each). Some text examples from Laudate might be ‘Creator of the Stars of Night’, which is the most common for this tune; ‘Before the Earth’ by David M. Young; ‘Lift Up Your Heads, You Mighty Gates’, translated by Catherine Winkworth; ‘On Jordan’s Bank’, translated by John Chandler.

As you explore your own music resources, be sure that the stressed syllables of the text match the natural stresses of the tune.

THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Gospel Luke 1:26-38 The angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. He went in and said to her, ‘Rejoice, so highly favoured!

The Lord is with you.’ She was deeply disturbed by these words and asked herself what this greeting could mean, but the angel said to her, ‘Mary, do not be afraid; you have won God’s favour.

Listen! You are to conceive and bear a son, and you must name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David; he will rule over the House of Jacob for ever and his reign will have no end.’

Reflecting on the Gospel The immaculate conception is a difficult concept for adults to grasp, much less children. Though it is a basic element of faith, it is the source of never-ending confusion and much explanatory catechesis. Frankly, the issue is not made easier when the reading for this solemnity narrates the conception of Jesus (also known as the annunciation) and not the immaculate conception (the conception of Mary). But as we know, there is no scriptural passage that narrates the conception of Mary, so the church gives us the story about the conception of Jesus! No wonder confusion abounds.

We recall that every Marian title ultimately says more about Jesus than it does about Mary. And that is certainly true with the immaculate conception, which claims that the salvific effects of what God has done in Christ preserved Mary from sin from the moment of her conception. Thus, the salvific power of the Christ-event transcends time, reaches back as it were, and has an effect on Mary herself as she is conceived.

For most of the history of the church this doctrine remained in the realm of theological inquiry and/or speculation. Not until the mid-nineteenth century was this formally proclaimed as doctrine by Pope Pius IX. Upon reading the gospel for the day we may turn our attention to Mary’s faith in God and her openness to the Lord’s will. Mary is known and celebrated throughout the world for this characteristic, among many others. Her yes (in Latin, fiat, or ‘let what you have said be done to me’) shows her willingness to cooperate with God for the salvation of humanity. Her attitude and character were called ‘immaculate’ by many early church fathers even if they were not referring to her conception. She was so open, pure, and devoted to God that she was willing to become an unwed mother in an age when that meant punishment and death under the law. Her character was understood to be immaculate from the moment of her conception by a singularly unique gift.

We can understand and appreciate some confusion regarding the meaning of this feast, which celebrates Mary’s immaculate character from the moment of conception, by reading from the gospel about the conception of Jesus by Mary’s own word of fiat.

Living the Paschal Mystery Ours is an adult faith with fairly sophisticated concepts and theological insights.

Not only do we have sacred texts, but we have a tradition of faith with a capital ‘T’ carried through the ages by saints, martyrs, popes, and the people of God. For some it becomes something of a theological parlour game to know and recite Catholic trivia with names, dates, historical underpinnings, and whimsical theories consigned to the dustbin of theological inquiry. But our faith is much more than an intellectual head-trip. Faith in Christ is about doing much more than knowing, though both have their rightful place. Never once in the gospels does Jesus say people will be judged by what they know. Instead, he often admonishes his audiences about what they do, or rather, do not do. On this feast day of the Immaculate Conception we certainly nod to the theological history and development of doctrine that gives us today’s celebration. But we might also remind ourselves that we are to be doers of the word, and not mere hearers.

• In Mary we find a model of discipleship.

Just as Mary was invited to bear Christ to the world, we are also called to be Christ-bearers.

• As God protected Mary from sin from the moment of her conception, he also desires to wash all sin from us. What spiritual practices reveal God’s forgiveness to you?

Homily Points • The church fathers have taught us that in her immaculate conception the Blessed Virgin Mary was protected from Original Sin from the very moment of her creation in the womb of her mother Anne. In the first reading today we witness Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden making choices that separate them from the ideal relationship they enjoyed with God up to that point.

Now, instead of walking with God in the garden, Adam hides as God calls, ‘Where are you’?

• In our lives as Christians we, too, are invited to walk with God. In what areas in our lives does God call to us, ‘Where are you’?

Gospel Luke 3:1-6 In the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar’s reign, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of the lands of Ituraea and Trachonitis, Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, during the pontificate of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah, in the wilderness. He went through the whole Jordan district proclaim­ing a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of sayings of the prophet Isaiah: A voice cries in the wilderness: Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight.

Every valley will be filled in, every mountain and hill be laid low, winding ways will be straightened and rough roads made smooth.

And all mankind shall see the salvation of God.

Reflecting on the Gospel After his introductory material, including the infancy narratives in chapters 1 and 2, Luke picks up the gospel story he inherited from Mark. That is, today’s reading from Luke is based on the opening verses of the Gospel of Mark with important additions. Beginning with John the Baptist’s preaching, Luke situates the Christ-event in a particular historical time and place, for, as he tells us in Acts 26:26, these things did not happen in a corner. And it is precisely because of Luke’s desire to give us the historical details that scholars can be fairly confident of their dating. Luke cites both civil and religious leaders to situate the Christ-event in history. The Emperor Tiberius, who reigned from AD 14 to 36, succeeded Caesar Augustus, which means that the fifteenth year of Tiberius’s reign could be anywhere from AD 27 to 29 depending on how one counts the years.

This is the most specific date given by Luke in this passage; the other figures named by Luke all fall within a wider range than that. For example, Pontius Pilate served from AD 26 to 36.

The historical details do much for the modern Christian (and ancient Christian for that matter) in demonstrating that Jesus was a historical figure. The Christ-event is not a mere myth like so many other Greek and Roman tales. Jesus was a living, breathing Jewish human being who lived in the Roman Empire in the province of Judea.

These things did not happen in a corner (cf. Acts 26:26).

Once the events are situated in their historical setting, Luke continues the narrative with the story about John the Baptist, whose birth is recounted in the first chapter. There we hear the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth having a child even though Elizabeth is barren. It is Luke who essentially makes John a cousin of Jesus, a detail found nowhere else in the New Testament. The appellation of John as ‘son of Zechariah’ (Luke 3:2) is a nod to the story in the first chapter.

These details alone – the historical setting and the familial relationship between John and Jesus – tell us we are dealing with a unique author who has his own theological insights to convey. Luke is a gifted storyteller, theologian, and evangelist. We do well to read his story carefully.

Living the Paschal Mystery Christians believe in the person Jesus, the Christ, the son of the Living God. Jesus walked this earth, breathed the air, enjoyed the sunshine, had meaningful relationships, and ultimately suffered death at the hands of the state. His story really happened: it is not myth, make believe, or something we simply tell children so they will be nice to one another. Luke is an evangelist who gives us the details, which allow scholars to situate the life of Jesus in a historical context. The names of civil and religious leaders like Tiberius, Pontius Pilate, Herod, Philip, and others throughout the gospel are known by ancient pagan sources as well. They form something of an anchor or peg upon which to hang a timeline for Jesus and his ministry. In the language of another gospel, this is the story of the Word made flesh in a given time and place.

Jesus lived in a province ruled by Rome and was executed by that ruling power. Though put to death by the state he was raised up by God, giving us

the paschal mystery. On this Second Sunday of Advent we pause to reflect on Jesus’s historical circumstances and our own, knowing that death is not the end.

To the point: Earlier in the Gospel of Luke we hear of John the Baptist’s childhood in which ‘[t]he child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the desert until the day of his manifestation to Israel’ (1:80; NABRE). This desert time is important for John’s formation as the preacher we hear in the gospel today. In the desert one must listen. John proclaims the words of the prophet Isaiah to the people, ‘Prepare a way for the Lord’. These words were addressed originally to the Israelites in exile in Babylon. The way being prepared was the way the Lord would lead them out of exile and restore them to their homeland. Now John invites his listeners to undertake an interior way of repentance.

Connecting the Gospel to the first and second readings: In the gospel we hear of John the Baptist drawing close to God in the desert. In the first two readings both the apostle Paul and the prophet Baruch are undergoing their own ‘desert’ experiences.

Paul is writing to the Christian community at Philippi from a prison. Baruch preaches a word of hope to the people of Israel in exile in Babylon. to experience: While difficult, desert experiences often serve to sharpen our faith and put our lives into focus. Where is the desert in your life right now?

How might God be speaking to you in the desert?

Connecting the Responsorial Psalm to the readings: Psalm 125 is one of pure joy and exultation. A people that were taken captive and exiled to another land are restored to security and prosperity in their homeland. This exultation is echoed by the prophet Baruch in the first reading. Baruch speaks to the city of Jerusalem mourning the loss of her children in the Babylonian exile. Baruch reassures her, saying, ‘[T]urn your eyes to the east: / see your sons reassembled from west and east / at the command of the Holy One, jubilant that God has remembered them’. Another prophet raises his voice in the gospel reading: John the Baptist. Unlike the psalm and the first reading, the gospel sounds harsher in some ways. Broaching no nonsense, John calls the people to a baptism of repentance. His call, though, is also reason to rejoice. Our God is one who does not turn his back on sinners.

Instead, God wishes to restore all those who have fallen ‘captive’ to sin. And when that happens ‘[t]hose who are sowing in tears / will sing when they reap’.

PROMPTS FOR FAITH-SHARING

As we prepare the way for Jesus to be born anew into our hearts this Christmas, what are the valleys we are called to fill in? Which mountains within our lives (pride, greed, anger) must be made low?

In his letter to the Philippians St. Paul writes, ‘My prayer is that your love for each other may increase more and more and never stop improving your knowledge and deepening your per­ception so that you can always recognise what is best’ (1:9-10). How might we fulfill that prayer within our own lives?

Both John and Jesus experience a period of time in the desert before taking on their public ministry. Where might you cultivate desert places in your life where you go to be with God in solitude and prayer?

As a parish how might you prepare to welcome with love and joy the people who will join your community to celebrate Christmas?

For the areas in our own lives crying for repentance and forgiveness, we ask for God’s mercy. . . [pause] Lord Jesus, you are the way, the truth and the life: Lord, have mercy.

Christ Jesus, you show us the way of salvation: Christ, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, you call us to repentance: Lord, have mercy.

Homily Points • The word of God comes to John the Baptist in the desert. We are not told what this word is but we see the result: John leaves his life of solitude and prayer to proclaim a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. As the forerunner of Jesus, John’s work is to prepare the people to receive the one who is coming, the one who is ‘the salvation of God’. John has been prepared for his mission by his life in the desert. Later Jesus will also follow this path. After being baptised in the Jordan, he will be led into the desert by the Spirit where he will fast and pray for forty days and forty nights.

• A few hundred years later, around the third century AD, a group of monks and nuns return to the desert to live lives of solitude and prayer. These Desert Fathers and Mothers left behind words of wisdom and a model for living the spiritual life. Although we may not be able to follow their austere example, we can cultivate areas of stillness and quiet in our own lives.

• Advent and Lent, our two seasons of preparation in the church year, provide annual opportunities for us to enter into the desert on retreat. We are given time to follow in the footsteps of Jesus, John, and the Desert Fathers and Mothers to listen to God away from all distractions. Where can you find space in your life to cultivate interior silence and contemplation? How might you set aside time for deep listening to the word of God?

Model Universal Prayer (Prayer of the Faithful) Presider: Heeding the call of John the Baptist, we pray for the strength and wisdom to ‘[p]repare a way for the Lord’.

Every time I pray for all of you, I pray with joy, remembering how you have helped to spread the Good News from the day you first heard it right up to the present. I am quite certain that the One who began this good work in you will see that it is finished when the Day of Christ Jesus comes. God knows how much I miss you all, loving you as Christ Jesus loves you. My prayer is that your love for each other may increase more and more and never stop improving your knowledge and deepening your per­ception so that you can always recognise what is best. This will help you to become pure and blameless, and prepare you for the Day of Christ, when you will reach the perfect goodness which Jesus Christ produces in us for the glory and praise of God.

About Liturgy Prepare the way: I do a lot of airline travel so I’m quite familiar with airport security protocols and I know the best ways to get through screening lines quickly and without much hassle. Except during the holidays. That’s when all the once- or twice-ayear travellers come out. They always bring way too much luggage, never have their IDs and boarding passes ready, and usually end up right in front of me in the security queue. I used to roll my eyes every time I saw them and grumble under my breath.

Why couldn’t they know more about airport etiquette and be a road warrior like me?

That is until I had a conversation with a harried single mom while waiting at security. She was taking three excited kids and a sullen teenager to Disneyland. She had scraped and sacrificed for several years to save up just enough to pay for the entire trip on her own. Yet the airport was the hardest part of the journey for her because she was deathly afraid to fly. None of her kids had been on a plane before, and she hadn’t flown since she was a child herself, but she was determined to give her children a bit of joy after so many years of just getting by. Her story, grit, and courage helped me see my inexperienced travel companions with a bit more compassion and even admiration.

How might it change our perception of those Christmas and Easter Catholics who start making their way to our parishes this time of year if we saw them less as a nuisance or burden and more like Christ for whom we wait? What if the road we are called to make straight is meant to be for them? What if we made every effort to ease their path to Christ with sincere and radical hospitality? We will not know how many obstacles they have had to navigate just to get to our doors unless we long for them with the affection of Christ. Then perhaps all those of us who are travellers on the road will see the salvation of God together.

About Liturgical Music Singing by ear and by heart: Many people today do not read music. It is simply a reality. While we need to do our part to promote more music-reading literacy in our communities, we should also aid those who may feel discouraged or put off by music they perceive to be complicated. This doesn’t mean that we need to water down our liturgical music. It simply challenges us to look for melodies that can be learned easily by ear and are grounded in strong texts, and with settings that are flexible enough to be enhanced by a choir or additional instruments. Two such pieces for this Sunday are found in Music from Taizé and the Psallite project. First, ‘Prepare the Way of the Lord’ (Taizé Community) is a four-part round that can be learned quickly by an assembly. Once the assembly is confident with the melody, the choir can complement the assembly line with the canon. You could even invite the entire assembly to join in the canon as well, dividing parts by men and women or by sections of the church. The refrain of ‘Arise Jerusalem, Stand on the Height’ (Collegeville Composers Group), with its exhortation to ‘open your hearts’, can be a powerful antiphon the assembly sings during the communion procession while cantors or a schola lead the verses.
