INTRODUCTION The Mother of the Redeemer has a precise place in the plan of salvation, for “when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.” (Ga 4:4-6) These words of the Apostle Paul celebrate together the love of the Father, the mission of the Son, the gift of the Spirit, the role of the woman from whom the Redeemer was born, and our own divine filiation. In the Incarnation, the Church encounters Christ and Mary indissolubly joined: he who is the Church’s Lord and Head and she who, uttering the first fiat of the New Covenant, prefigures the Church’s condition as spouse and mother. Strengthened by the presence of Christ (Mt 28:20), the Church journeys through time towards the consummation of the ages and goes to meet the Lord who comes. But on this journey she proceeds along the path already trodden by the Virgin Mary, who “advanced in her pilgrimage of faith, and loyally persevered in her union with her Son unto the cross.” (Adapted from Redemptoris Mater, “The Mother of the Redeemer,” 1, 2, Pope John Paul II, 1987)

STANDARD MARIAN PRAYERS Hail Mary The first line is the Salutation of the Archangel Gabriel to the Blessed Virgin Mary the future mother of Jesus. The second and third lines are the words of Elizabeth, her cousin; the addition of the word ‘Jesus’ is attributed to Pope Urban IV (1261-64), while the concluding petition reached its present form in 1514. Ave María, gratia plena, Dóminus tecum; benedícta tu in muliéribus, et benedíctus fructus ventris tui, Iesus.

Hail Mary, full of grace; the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostræ. Amen.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Morning Offering Prayer This Morning Offering prayer is said by many Catholics throughout the world, each morning, to fulfil the request of Our Lady of Fatima for the sanctification of daily duties as a condition for the conversion of all people. O My God, in union with the Immaculate Heart of Mary (here kiss your Brown Scapular), I offer Thee the Precious Blood of Jesus from all the altars throughout the world, joining with it the offering of my every thought, word and action of this day. O My Jesus, I desire today to gain every indulgence and merit I can and I offer them, together with myself, to Mary Immaculate that she may best apply them to the interests of Thy most Sacred Heart. Precious Blood of Jesus, save us! Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us! Sacred Heart of Jesus, Have mercy on us! Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Virgin Mary, Mother of God and our Mother, to your Immaculate Heart we consecrate ourselves, in an act of total entrustment to the Lord. By you we will be led to Christ. By Him and with Him we will be led to the Father.

We will walk in the light of faith, and we will do everything so that the world may believe that Jesus Christ is the One sent by the Father. With Him we wish to carry His Love and Salvation to the ends of the earth. Under the protection of your Immaculate Heart, we will be one People with Christ. We will be witnesses of His Resurrection. By Him we will be led to the Father, for the glory of the Most Holy Trinity, Whom we adore, praise and bless forever. Amen. Magnificat This is Mary’s hymn of praise to God in St Luke’s Gospel (Lk 1:46-55) on the occasion of her Visitation to St Elizabeth. He puts forth his arm in strength and scatters the proud hearted. He casts the mighty from their thrones and raises the lowly. He fills the starving with good things, sends the rich away empty. Hail Holy Queen - Salve, Regina Attributed to several sources, the probable author is Herman the Lame (1013-1054), a monk of Reichenau Abbey in Germany. Salve, Regína, mater misericórdiæ, vita, dulcédo et spes nostra, salve. Ad te clamámus, éxsules fílii evæ. Memorare The Memorare is a famous Marian prayer attributed to St Bernard (1090-1153) Memoráre, o piíssima Virgo María, non esse audítum a sæculo, quemquam ad tua curréntem præsídia, tua implorántem auxília, tua peténtem suffrágia esse derelíctum. Ego tali animátus confidéntia ad te, Virgo Vírginum, Mater, curro, ad te vénio, coram te gemens peccátor assísto. Noli, Mater Verbi, verba mea despícere, sed audi propitia et exáudi. Amen.

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession, was left unaided. PRAYERS FROM THE MISSAL AND BREVIARY The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph This feast commemorates the unity and love of Jesus, Mary his mother and Joseph, his foster father, as lived out in Bethlehem, Egypt, and Nazareth, and promotes the life they lived as the ideal of family life which all Christian families should seek to emulate. It is celebrated on the Sunday within the Octave of the Nativity of the Lord, or, if there is no Sunday on 30 December. Collect from the Missal O God, who were pleased to give us the shining example of the Holy Family, graciously grant that we may imitate them in practising the virtues of family life and in the bonds of charity, and so, in the joy of your house, delight one day in eternal rewards. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Concluding Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours God our Father, in the Holy Family of Nazareth you have given us the true model of a Christian home. Grant that by following Jesus, Mary and Joseph in their love for each other and in the example of their family life we may come to your home of peace and joy. 1 January - Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God This feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Theotokos, or Mother of God, is held on the first day of the New Year, the Octave day of Christmas. It celebrates Mary’s motherhood of Jesus, and the term Theotokos or God-bearer was adopted by the First Council of Ephesus (431), in order to safeguard the Divinity and humanity of Christ. Collect from the Missal O God, who through the fruitful virginity of Blessed Mary bestowed on the human race the grace of eternal salvation, grant, we pray, that we may experience the intercession of her, through whom we were found worthy to receive the author of life, our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son.

Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. 2 February - the Presentation of the Lord The Presentation of the Lord, popularly known as ‘Candlemas,’ traditionally concludes the celebration of the season of Christmas. It commemorates the presentation of Jesus in the Temple by Our Lady and St Joseph, forty days after his birth, an occasion when offerings were made and the mother was ritually purified. Collect from the Missal Almighty ever-living God, we humbly implore your majesty that, just as your Only Begotten Son was presented on this day in the Temple in the substance of our flesh, so, by your grace, we may be presented to you with minds made pure. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

The angel Gabriel Translated by Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924), from a Basque carol The angel Gabriel from heaven came, his wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame; “All hail,” said he, “thou lowly maiden Mary, most highly favoured lady,” Gloria! “For know a blessed Mother thou shalt be, all generations laud and honour thee, thy Son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold, most highly favoured lady,” Gloria! Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head, “To me be as it pleaseth God,” she said, “my soul shall laud and magnify his holy Name.” Most highly favoured lady, Gloria! Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ, was born in Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn, and Christian folk throughout the world will ever say“Most highly favoured lady,” Gloria!

MARY IN THE BIBLE The following Biblical passages relate to Our Lady. Those from the Old Testament indicate that Mary can be seen as being prefigured, in the prophetic sense, as the mother of the Redeemer and Messiah, while those from the New Testament show how her life with Christ unfolded.

OLD TESTAMENT PASSAGES Genesis 3:9-15 – the Protoevangelium – the Promise of the Redeemer After the Fall of Adam and Eve, God punished the devil and promised that the offspring of the woman, Jesus, the New Adam, son of Mary, the New Eve, would crush the head of Satan. This is the Protoevangelium, the “first Gospel,” the promise of the Redeemer to come in the fullness of time. Genesis 28:12-15 – Jacob’s Ladder as a type of Mary Just as Jacob saw in a vision a ladder extending from earth to heaven, so is Mary the ladder by which Jesus descended to earth, taking on human nature, as well as being the way, as the Mediatrix of all graces, by which through her intercession we receive grace.

Exodus 3:1-4 – The Burning Bush as a type of Mary Just as Moses saw the bush burning, but it was not consumed, so Mary’s virginity remained whole before, during and after Christ’s birth, as she became a mother in a miraculous way. Exodus 40:20 – the Ark of the Covenant as a type of Mary Just as the Ark contained the tablets of the Mosaic Law, so Mary bore the heir to this Law, Jesus Christ, and just as the Ark was covered inside and out with gold, so Mary, the new Ark of the Covenant, shone with the golden brilliance of a matchless purity. Numbers 17 – Aaron’s rod as a type of Mary Just as Aaron’s rod sprouted miraculously, giving forth buds, blossoms and fruit, so Mary brought forth Christ without loss of her virginity and free from pain, as the temple of the Holy Spirit. Judges 6:36-40 – Gideon’s Fleece as a type of Mary Just as Gideon’s fleece was wet while the ground was dry around it on the first morning, while it was dry and the ground wet the next day, so firstly the Son of God descended from heaven into her womb, and secondly, Mary was full of grace from her conception while the rest of humanity was affected by original sin.

Isaiah 7:14-16 – the prophetic sign of the Virgin Birth Isaiah gave King Ahaz the sign of the Virgin Birth of the Son who would be called Emmanuel, that is, “God with us,” in other words the Incarnation of Christ at Bethlehem, through the miracle of the Virgin Birth. Ezekiel 44:2 – Mary as the Eastern Gate of the Temple Just as the Eastern Gate of the Temple, according to Ezekiel, would remain shut because the Lord, the God of Israel, had passed through it, so Mary was the closed Gate who retained her virginity after the birth of Christ. Micah 5:2-3 – the Ruler of Israel, the Messiah, is to come from Bethlehem Jesus was born in Bethlehem to Mary, as the prophet Micah had foretold: his origin was from of old, from ancient days, because he was the incarnate Son of God.

NEW TESTAMENT PASSAGES Luke 1:26-38 – the Annunciation of the Angel Gabriel to Mary, who told her that she was to be the Mother of God. Mary’s yes to God led to the Incarnation of Jesus in her womb. Luke 1:39-45 – this passage deals with the Visitation of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth, who was carrying St John the Baptist, and was the occasion of her hymn of praise, the Magnificat.

Matthew 1:18-24 – the Birth of Our Lord to Our Lady. St Matthew’s account focuses on how an Angel of the Lord appeared to St Joseph in a dream to reassure him that Mary had remained faithful and that she had conceived her child by the power of the Holy Spirit. Luke 2:1-14 – the Birth of Our Lord; after Mary and Joseph had gone to Bethlehem for Caesar Augustus’s census, Jesus was born there in humility and poverty, because there was no place for them at the inn. Luke 2:15-20 – the Shepherds go to see the Holy Family; after they had been told of Christ’s birth by a vision of angels, the shepherds visited the Holy Family in their shelter at Bethlehem. Luke 2:22-40 – the Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple forty days after his birth by Mary and Joseph. When the aged Simeon saw the Child, he foretold that a sword of sorrow would pierce the Blessed Virgin’s heart at the time of the crucifixion. Matthew 2:1-12 – the Visit of the Wise Men to see the Child Jesus. After King Herod had tried to deceive the Magi they visited the Holy Family at Bethlehem, but returned by a different way to their own country . This is the Epiphany, or manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles. Luke 2:41-51 – the finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple by Mary and Joseph. After he had been missing for three

days, his parents found him, but did not understand when he told them that he had been about his Father’s affairs. John 2:1-11 - The Wedding Feast at Cana saw the public manifestation of Jesus as the Messiah, as he turned the water into wine for the guests at the behest of his mother, Mary, thus anticipating his “hour” when his mission as the Redeemer of all mankind would begin. John 19:25-27 – this passage describes Mary at the foot of the Cross of her Son, Jesus. He gave John to her as her son, and confided John to Mary as his mother, an indication of how all Christians, who are brothers of Christ, are also Mary’s spiritual children. Acts of the Apostles 1:12-14; 2:1-4 – Mary, as the Spouse of the Holy Spirit was at the descent of the same Holy Spirit at Pentecost, when the disciples were filled with his power and were able to boldly proclaim the Faith. Revelation 11:19; 12:1-6,10 – Mary is the Woman of the Apocalypse, the new ark of the covenant, now assumed into heaven, the Woman clothed with the sun, who also has the moon under her feet, symbols of her power as Mother and intercessor for all mankind.
