W
hen Fr. Mariya James was growing up in India, he prayed the Rosary with his family regularly. This made a remarkable impression on him, one that remains with him to this day. “We said the Rosary together as a family each evening,” Fr. James says. “Before we learned our catechism, we learned to pray the Rosary. It was a regular part of our life. My mother and father always encouraged us children to pray along with them. This is what really brought us close to God.” Over the years, Fr. James has witnessed the tremendous influence the Rosary has on those who open their hearts to it. “It has a really deep impact on those who pray it, and it brings them many graces and much peace,” he says. “It is especially helpful for families. Until people experience it for themselves, they cannot understand how great it really is.” Importantly, the Rosary must not be merely recited — instead, it is a loving conversation with one’s Heavenly Mother. “When we pray the Rosary, we are continued on back cover

uando el Padre Mariya James crecía en India, rezaba el Rosario con su familia regularmente. I
t is important that we recognize the difference between right and wrong — both morally and ethically. Sometimes, though, this line can become blurred. Many situations we encounter in our lives include variables that can leave us conflicted and unsure of how to move forward in accordance with God’s will. How do we work through these moral conundrums? One way is to develop a solid Christian conscience. A moral conscience exists in the heart of every individual. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states, “When he listens to his conscience, the prudent man can hear God speaking. Conscience is a judgment of reason whereby the human person recognizes the moral quality of a concrete act that he is going to perform, is in the process of performing, or has already completed” (CCC 1777, 1778). While everyone is blessed with a conscience, each individual has a responsibility to develop this conscience. Parents obviously play an important role in developing their children’s consciences — parents have a responsibility to teach virtue to their children and help them to avoid fear, selfishness and pride. As we grow older, we take on the lifelong challenge of continually forming our own consciences, and establishing a moral code that enables us to make the proper judgments. One valuable tool in forming a conscience is the practice of introspection. “It is important for every person to be sufficiently present to himself in order to hear and follow the voice of his conscience” (CCC 1779). In contemporary society, where there are so many distractions and routines, it is extremely important that we take the time to look inward and truly listen to what our inner voice is telling us.

s importante que reconozcamos la diferencia entre el bien y el mal – moral y éticamente. Sin embargo, frecuentemente la diferencia puede nublarse. Encontramos muchas situaciones en la vida con variables que causan conflictos y nos dejan inseguros de como cumplir la voluntad divina. ¿Cómo enfrentar estas disyuntivas morales? Una manera es desarrollar una consciencia cristiana sólida. Una conciencia moral vive en el corazón de cada individuo. Como dice el Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, “El hombre prudente, cuando escucha la conciencia moral, puede oír a Dios que le habla. La conciencia moral es un juicio de la razón por el que la persona humana reconoce la cualidad moral de un acto concreto que piensa hacer, está haciendo o ha hecho.” (CCC 1777, 1778). Aunque todos son bendecidos con una consciencia, cada individuo es responsable de desarrollar esa consciencia. Por supuesto los padres juegan un papel importante en desarrollar la consciencia de sus hijos – los padres son responsables de enseñar virtud a sus hijos y ayudarles a evitar el miedo, egoísmo y orgullo. Según maduramos, asumimos el reto vital de formar nuestras consciencias y establecer un código moral, que nos permita formar juicios morales correctos. Una valiosa herramienta para formar la consciencia es practicar la introspección. “Es preciso que cada uno preste mucha atención a sí mismo para oír y seguir la voz de su conciencia.” (CCC 1779). I want you to know that you are very much in prayers and St. Michael Parish is very grateful to you for your kind cooperation and your generous support during these hard times. This is my privilege to say “Welcome Home” To those of you who have been actively participating in the life of our parish but have been forced to stay away due to the COVID-19 pandemic, welcome home! To those of you who haven’t been to church in years and decided to renew your faith, welcome back, and welcome home! During these past few months, we have experienced some of the most challenging and unnerving times in the history of our nation and Church. As we start to emerge from this crisis and return to Mass and parish activities and ministries, we feel blessed and excited to see familiar faces and some new faces, as well In times like these, when nothing seems to make sense, we are so glad you are here. The timing of your return is perfect, because the truth is, we need Christ now more than ever. Whether you have simply been forced to stay away while public Masses were canceled, or if you have been away from the Church for many years, this crisis has changed us all. We have had some extra time lately for introspection. For personal reflection. And for prayer. And perhaps during this era of isolation and social distancing, you have found yourself yearning for Christ more than ever before in the hopes of finding some meaning to all of this. You have come to the right place. As you walk through our doors for the first time in months — or perhaps even years — we hope you see the face of Christ in all those around you. We hope you find a welcoming parish family there to greet you, overjoyed by your return. As Christ tells us, from Matthew’s Gospel, “For I was a stranger, you welcomed me” (Mt. 25:35). Whether you’re a longtime parishioner, or someone who fell away from the Catholic Church and are ready to become renewed in the faith, we welcome you with open arms! By living out our calling as Christian stewards, we will all emerge from this dark time as a community of faith that is stronger than ever — together. Welcome back. And welcome home.
aludos, bendiciones y oraciones para todos del Padre Balaji, su Pastor. Quiero que sepan que están siempre en mis oraciones y que la parroquia de St. Michael está muy agradecida por su cooperación y generoso apoyo en estos difíciles momentos. Es mi privilegio decir “Bienvenidos a Casa.” Para quienes han participado activamente de la vida parroquial, pero se han visto forzados a alejarse por la pandemia del COVID-19, ¡bienvenidos a casa! Outreach in a Time of Crisis: St. Michael Serves Many in the Midst of COVID-19 Closures and Beyond
T
his spring, the global pandemic began changing the way Americans live and work. For everyone it has been an entirely unprecedented event. While St. Michael, like all Catholic churches across the world, had to adapt to new ways of serving God’s people; one thing has remained the same — the strong faith and active discipleship of our church members is still the foundation of our Church. Throughout the COVID-19 crisis, our parish leaders have provided invaluable spiritual and practical support to both members of our own faith family and the greater community. As the Director of Social Outreach at St. Michael, Elizabeth Chanoine says Christian Connection has remained busy throughout the months of church closure and has been working on new ways to help parishioners and community members in need. As a Licensed Professional Counselor Intern, Elizabeth has been able to offer counseling to those suffering from mental health issues such as anxiety or depression, as well as serving as a counselor for our Marriage Tribunal. Other challenges in ways to provide service came when we had to suspend bringing communion to our homebound church members, who are an important part of our church family. We asked our Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to continue to have contact with the homebound by phone, at least once a week, when they would usually be bringing Communion to them. This would provide an opportunity to talk and pray with them and express our ongoing concern for them. Even Christian Connection’s service of financial assistance have been changing too. As you can imagine, financial needs have been in high demand over the last few months. Many individuals and families in our area have been furloughed or laid off from their jobs. But this also offered more opportunities to give resources and employment leads and to offer the message of hope for a change in the situation. Christian Connection assists residents of Bedford and Euless, as well as the parishioners of St. Michael Catholic Church. We have seen more people coming for help, and more people needing large amounts of help. We talked to someone earlier in the summer who needed rent for March, April, and May, and was still unemployed. Normally we help with a smaller portion of the rent, but this case required a sizable amount of assistance to keep them from being evicted. We had to get agencies to work together with us to meet the need. Our regular people, who live on a tight fixed budget also must be gently and carefully helped. They may have been doing fine, and then

June Jovero, Ministry Lead for Christian Connection all the sudden they have been laid off or have become ill. The situation suddenly becomes very uncertain for them. In the midst of this crisis, Christian Connection has been working on a bigger plan for help. Elizabeth Chanoine and June Jovero have been working to facilitate an Employment Roundtable with other local organizations, such as 6 Stones, Career Solutions, the City Planner from Euless - Mike Collins, HEB Transit and staffing agencies. The goal of the Employment Roundtable is to help the agencies work more efficiently together for prompt job placement for our unemployed. There are many jobs available and there is good reason to remain optimistic. The solution is for us to help the job seeker be more effective looking for a job and we need to provide additional job training and/or certification when needed. Our Employment Roundtable can do this. It is all about increasing self-sustainability. AYUDA en Tiempos de Crisis: St. Michael Atiende a Muchos en Medio de los Cierres por COVID-19 y Más

sta primavera, la pandemia global cambio los hábitos de vida y trabajo de los americanos. Para todos ha sido un evento de Dios; algo permanece inalterado. Mientas St. Michael, como parroquias católicas en todo el mundo, se ha adaptado a nuevas maneras de servir al pueblo de Dios, algo permanece inalterado – la firme fe y discipulado activo de nuestros feligreses es el fundamento de la Iglesia. Durante la crisis por el COVID-19, nuestros líderes parroquiales han brindado valioso apoyo espiritual y respaldo práctico a los miembros de nuestra familia de fe y la más amplia comunidad. Como dice nuestra Directora de Alcance Social en St. Michael, Elizabeth Chanoine, Christian Connection ha estado activa en los meses que ha cerrado la parroquia y trabajado en nuevas maneras de ayudar a los feligreses y necesitados en la comunidad. Eso les daba la oportunidad de hablar y orar con ellos, y de transmitirles nuestra preocupación por ellos. Hasta el servicio de ayuda económica de Christian Connection ha cambiado. Como pueden imaginar, las necesidades económicas han aumentado en los meses pasados. Muchos empleos. individuos y familias sufren por la pérdida de empleos. Pero eso ha presentado más oportunidades para dar recursos y orientación de empleo y ofrecer un mensaje de esperanza de un cambio en la situación. Christian Connection ayuda a los residentes de Bedford y Euless, y a los feligreses de St. Michael. Hemos visto más personas solicitando ayuda, y más personas necesitando mucha ayuda. tewardship is all about caring for and cultivating the gifts bestowed upon us by God. This includes one of life’s greatest blessings — our children. That’s why Safe Environment Training Coordinator Annette Lee says Safe Environment is so vital to St. Michael ministry operations. “Children are one of God’s greatest gifts to us,” Annette says. ”And so, really, Safe Environment training, and learning the warning signs of child sexual abuse, is a way of taking care of God’s children.” Safe Environment is a diocesan program designed to foster a safer environment for all adults and children within our faith community. In fact, every St. Michael volunteer is required to complete the adult version of the program known as VIRTUS® prior to becoming involved in ministry life. This educates all volunteers on the grooming behaviors commonly used by predators in luring their victims. “It makes every volunteer aware of the myths and facts concerning child sexual abuse,” Annette says. “You might be attending Mass on a Sunday and you witness something that flags your attention — something that concerns you. Even though you’re not serving in a volunteer capacity at that time, you’ve been trained to recognize and know how to respond appropriately.” Training also helps equip participants with a plan of action, helping them know how and where to respond should they suspect any form of abuse. Volunteers learn how to file a confidential notice of concern and how to contact Child Protective Services. “Instead of witnessing something and saying, ‘Oh, my gosh, what do I do now?’ people are now informed and know what to do,” Annette says. “This is so important because even if your particular ministry doesn’t interact with children at all, the truth is that part of just belonging to a parish means we’re going to be sharing space and interacting to some degree with children and youth. It’s our job to help make our parish as safe as possible for them.” Training is scheduled on an ongoing basis throughout the diocese and can be taken by any adult parishioner in conjunction with filling out their initial St. Michael volunteer paperwork. Background checks are conducted as part of volunteer screening, creating an additional barrier for potential abusers. Once completed, VIRTUS ® training is valid for two years, after which a shorter renewal session is required. “Ultimately, the purpose of all of this is to make our parishioners more aware of what to look for in order to identify situations that could put our children at risk,” Annette says. This is because May is traditionally the month dedicated to the Blessed Mother, and October is the month which includes the Feast of the Holy Rosary. All are invited to take part in this effort to bring the consoling presence of the Blessed Mother into our midst. “The Rosary brings so many blessings to a person, and helps them feel the joy and compassion of our Blessed Mother,” Fr.
