MARTHA’S KITCHEN:
Blessed to Still Be Serving
W
hen we think of the Bible story of the sisters Martha and Mary, we tend to focus on Christ’s words of correction to the bustling Martha: “Mary has chosen the better part” (Luke 10:42). While Mary’s listening stance at the Lord’s feet may have indeed been the better part, it doesn’t negate Martha’s own goodness and generosity in opening up her home to the Lord. It’s this generosity that Immaculate Conception parishioners are Parish volunteers gathering to cook together for seeking to emulate through Jericho Way, prior to the COVID-19 outbreak the Martha’s Kitchen Ministry. “It was started years ago by this wonderful lady,” says current ministry coordinator Karen Baxter-Rhoades. “She got the idea of calling it Martha’s Kitchen after the woman who welcomed Jesus into her home. Her hope was to give the homeless a nice, warm, home-cooked meal so they could feel special.” continued on page 2
