A Message from the Executive Director As we prepare to begin another school year, it gives me great joy to share this report with you about the vital impact our five schools continue to have in the lives of children from Camden. We take great pride in nurturing curious, intelligent and compassionate students at our five schools. The Partnership’s experienced and dedicated principals and teachers immerse the students in a culture of strong academics rooted in enduring, faith-based values. Today families in Camden have many new educational opportunities for their children.

Yet a growing percentage of the local school age children continue to come to our schools. We continue to build a solid educational foundation for 1,000 boys and girls each year.

Ours is a tried and proven formula for education that has nurtured and provided solid skills sending countless men and women onto a path of deep faith, compassion and fulfillment. Though our management structure is only nine years old, our five schools have provided the children of aspiring immigrant families hope and opportunity for nearly a century. Catholic Partnership Schools stand out for their warm and nurturing classrooms where expectations are high and each and every child is known and their gifts encouraged and supported.

This year, as every year, we faced and met the challenge of operating funds to support the schools in an impoverished community. Support from generous benefactors and friends like you enables us to provide our inner city children an outstanding education.

This year more than 380 teachers and policy makers attended our annual Education Summit, learning from nationally recognized educators how to overcome the trauma facing childrens’ learning in an environment impacted by urban poverty and violence. The Partnership continues to take a leading role in conversations and initiatives regarding how to best educate children growing up in these difficult circumstances.

An important component in our children’s success is academically focused afterschool and summer programs.

Our “Student Opportunities for Achievement and Recreation” (SOAR) program reinforces their learning and gives them fun, safe after school, as well as summer activities. Partnership co-curricular activities during the year include our robotics and aviation programs and our choir and orchestra. Students also benefit from our strong athletic program, participating in basketball, cross country track and baseball.

Literacy is central in closing the achievement gap, and we have seen significant growth in all grades this year.

Thirty three of our 2017 graduates received full or partial scholarships to six private high schools. This is especially impressive in a city that too often struggles to provide opportunities for its young people.

Our future civic, economic and cultural leaders are sitting in our classrooms today. Support from community partners like you prepares our children to fulfill their dreams. Together, we are not only sustaining but strengthening and developing our schools while ensuring the children of Camden access to faith based education, a choice on which our country was founded.

About The Catholic Partnership Schools Since 2009, the Catholic Partnership Schools (CPS) has operated the five remaining Catholic K- 8 schools serving the city of Camden - Holy Name, Sacred Heart, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Cecilia, and St. Joseph Pro-Cathedral.

CPS is totally responsible for their financial, academic, operational management and fundraising. Our schools, previously run by the local parishes, have been successfully helping Camden’s children of all faiths learn for nearly 100 years. CPS gives our 1,000 students strong academic skills AND faith based values. Based on the best practices of other urban Catholic schools, the Partnership has created a national model of success.

What is your name, age, school and grade?

My name is Anthony Pablo. I am 6 years old and going into first grade at St. Anthony of Padua School.

Who is in your family?

My mom Concepcion, brother Christian, sister Jocelyn, dad Gabriel, aunt Leticia, aunt Nancy, and cousins Tommy, Stefani, Christopher, Monserrat, Giovanni, Miguel, and Angel. My sister and all of my cousins go to school with me. My brother graduated from 8th grade last year.

What kinds of things do you like to do with your family?

I like to play with my brother. I can beat him at soccer.

Do you like St. Anthony’s School? Why? Yes, because my brother and sister are here, but my brother is going to high school. Also because of Mrs. Feeney (the Kindergarten teacher).

What is your favorite thing to do in school?

Play with centers, because we all get to do different things that we like. On Fridays we did centers.

Tell me something that you learned to do in Kindergarten Work – handwriting. We have to be quiet when we write.

Were you part of the CPS summer program? What was your favorite part?

Yes. I liked The Discovery Museum- playing science and putting the scarf through the wind tunnel. It was really cool! I also liked writing, making new friends, and snack.

Do you have any pets?

Yes! I have a dog named Nece.

What’s your favorite color?

Red and green.

What’s your favorite food?

What’s your favorite day of the week?

Saturday, because my mom doesn’t have to work and we get to play.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

A fireman.

Are you excited for first grade?

Yes, my teacher will be Mrs. Ruskowski. My cousin will be in Kindergarten and my other cousin will be in Pre-K. It will be fun!

High School Graduate: Evelyn Marquez St. Joseph Pro-Cathedral School ‘13, Camden Catholic ‘17 Evelyn Marquez’s journey began in Mexico. She is the oldest child of Camelia and Rigoberto, a hardworking couple who immigrated to the U.S. when Evelyn was four years old, in search of a better life with more opportunity. Her early years were happy.

Her parents stressed the importance of education, and Evelyn remembers studying English and finally learning enough in elementary school to enter a spelling bee. But the happy times didn’t last.

When Evelyn was in sixth grade, her mother had to return to Mexico to care for her dying grandfather.

Thinking that she would be gone for only a few months, she left Evelyn and her two younger siblings in the care of their father, a kind-hearted man who struggled with depression and alcoholism. It turned out that she wouldn’t be able to return for four years.

financially as well. She had to start working parttime to help support her younger siblings. In spite of that, Evelyn graduated from Camden Catholic in June with a 3.8 GPA. Evelyn’s hard work, determination, and academic excellence led several of her mentors to nominate her for “The Joseph Scholarship,” a full four-year scholarship to college sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Philadelphia, for which she was selected! Thanks to the generosity of the Sisters, her journey will continue in the fall at Rowan University, where she will major in mechanical engineering. She plans to pursue her master’s degree and hopes to one day work for NASA. Evelyn at her graduation from Camden Catholic

Her mother’s absence left a big hole in the family, but just after she left, Evelyn earned a scholarship to St. Joseph Pro-Cathedral School. Her new school became a sanctuary and a place where she met others with similar goals and dreams.

“At St. Joseph’s I met people who shared my values and worked with me to help me improve my academic skills. They encouraged us to reflect on what kind of future we wanted for ourselves. St. Joseph’s was the first place where I decided I wanted to be an engineer.” Her father, with whom Evelyn is very close, had been an influence in this decision as well. An auto mechanic by trade, Evelyn says that he would take her to work with him and explain how the different parts of cars worked. He had dreamed of being an engineer himself, but couldn’t afford to continue his education. This inspired her to devote herself even more to her own goals.

Evelyn excelled academically at St. Joseph’s and earned a full scholarship to Camden Catholic high school, where she participated in photography club, ethics bowl, soccer, and the National Honor Society.

Sadly, Evelyn had to say good-bye to her father this past year. He had developed severe arthritis and was unable to work. The family decided he should return to Mexico to be cared for by his sister, who he had helped to put through nursing school. This loss was not only emotionally difficult for Evelyn, but 5

College Student: Luigi Nunez Holy Name ‘09, Camden Catholic ‘13 St. Joseph’s University ‘17 As Luigi Nunez reflects about his journey from elementary school in North Camden to graduating summa cum laude from St. Joseph’s University this past May, he realizes the impact that Catholic education has had on his life. Luigi attended Holy Name from third grade to eighth grade and says, “My years at Holy Name provided me with a solid Catholic school foundation that I have used to make good decisions and achieve my goals.”

At Holy Name, he recalls attending the after-school program every day to work on his homework. Luigi’s parents are both immigrants from the Dominican Republic and had always emphasized the importance of education to Luigi and his two siblings, but they were often unable to help with school work. The afterschool program was a space for Luigi to focus on his homework and ask teachers for help.

Luigi graduated from Holy Name in 2009 and decided that he wanted to continue his Catholic education by attending Camden Catholic High School. “If I didn’t attend Holy Name, I would have never known about Camden Catholic or any other Catholic High Schools in the area.” Luigi says that he felt fully supported by the Holy Name faculty and staff during his transition into high school and found Camden Catholic to be an equally supportive environment that prepared him to succeed at St. Joseph’s University.

After graduation from St. Joe’s, Luigi was named a recipient of a fellowship from the Global Health Corps (GHC). This outstanding accomplishment allows him to live his faith in action by living and working in Kampala, Uganda with an organization that helps promote health equity in Africa beginning in July, 2017.

The Global Health Corps is a U.S. nonprofit organization that selects qualified young professionals to work with high-impact organizations for one year.

More than 5,000 people apply for approximately 100 fellowships each year. Luigi was selected to serve as an e-learning officer with the Program for Accessible Health Communication and Education (PACE).

When asked what the future holds for Luigi after his fellowship year with GHC, he says that he would like to get his Ph.D. and “work to optimize social justice efforts in technology fields.” He would like to use his skills in computer science for a few years and then eventually go into politics because “we are in need of structural change.” Luigi is an exceptional young man whose passion, leadership, and enthusiasm are evident in his words and actions. A big dreamer, there are no limits to Luigi’s visions and accomplishments.

SUMMER ESL Summer Program Approximately 30% of CPS students speak a language other than English at home, and many of our students are immigrants themselves.

Recognizing the need to help students maintain their school-year language gains over the summer, we designed a 20 hour per week program that targets students in K - 4th grade, who need extra support speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English.

Summer at CPS Student learning and fun doesn’t stop in May! Nearly 200 students participate in enrichment activities at CPS during the summer. These programs strengthen their academic skills and provide them with a safe environment.

Soaring through Summer Program Soaring through Summer gives our students an outstanding summer camp-type experience, supporting academic success and character building along with fun activities. SOAR participants read, write and work on theme based art, science and technology activities. In their twice weekly computer class, students keep a journal which they can print and keep. They also participate in a weekly sports activity and field trip, and hear a guest presenter.

SOAR participants’ reading, language and math skills are measured in the spring and fall. These students showed little or no summer decline and many showed significant growth in each area.

On average students test scores showed a gain of 10 points over the summer!

Graduate and Family Summer Support The transition between middle school and high school is an important and challenging time. Through the Graduate and Family Support Summer program, incoming freshmen practice the math and reading skills required at their high schools. They also learn life and study skills that will help them prepare for their new role as high school students. During this summer program, the recent CPS graduates attend trips to college campuses. This year, they visited St. Peter’s College and Rowan University.

Acellus Blended Learning Summer School Students who have struggled academically throughout the school year receive personalized help to master academic skills needed to advance. They achieve success through this summer program, which combines live instruction with online help in the classroom through the Acellus video system.

Students from our Soaring through Summer and Graduate and Family Summer Support programs enjoyed a fun day at Lake Atsion to conclude the season.

2016—2017 Highlights Holy Name ‘09, Camden Catholic ‘13

The 2016 – 2017 academic year was filled with many moments of celebration, accomplishments and success.

Media Coverage: CPS was nationally recognized as a role model for Catholic education in inner-cities in features published in the National Catholic Register and the National Catholic Reporter. Sister Karen was also featured in Op-Ed pieces in the Philadelphia Inquirer and Courier Post, stressing the value of small class sizes at CPS and elsewhere in educating young inner-city children.

Aviation: In collaboration with the Camden Youth Aviation Program, CPS provides 6th – 8th grade students with an academic enrichment program focusing on aviation. Students in the group meet weekly and learn about science, technology, engineering, math and the arts. A few of this year’s field trips included visits to the NASTAR Center, Airborne Systems, and Leonardo Helicopters. In March, the Aviation students were given a wonderful opportunity to fly in an airplane from South Jersey Regional Airport. It was the first time that a number of our students had ever flown in an airplane!

A three year Aviation participant, Briana Roman, was awarded a scholarship to attend the EAA Air Academy, a week-long Aviation camp in Oshkosh, WI this summer.

MEMORIES WE BELIEVE THAT...

Athletics: Catholic Partnership Schools recognize the value of extracurricular athletic programs and the positive effect they have on Camden’s children. Athletic programs promote cooperation, teamwork, good sportsmanship, and responsibility among students. The CPS athletic program includes boys and girls traveling varsity basketball teams, boy’s baseball, as well as boys and girls cross country.

Robotics: Eleven CPS students with an interest in math and science participated in the CPS Robotics program. The students learned techniques in building and programming LEGO Robots and were exposed to various STEM concepts. They went on a field trip to the Robot Revolution exhibit at the Franklin Institute, participated in a “Technology Competition” at Camden County Technical Schools, and had multiple speakers come to share knowledge on various math and science topics.

Boat Building: In collaboration with Urban Promise’s BoatWorks program, eight students in 6th-8th grades from St. Joseph Pro-Cathedral School worked together to build a 16 foot wooden canoe. At the end of the year, they joined students from other build teams for a “launching of the fleet” on the Cooper River.

Trauma Sensitive Classroom and Responsive Schools At our 5th annual Education Summit this March, approximately 400 educators and policy makers representing over 20 organizations came to Camden to learn about the impact of trauma on the brain and strategies for creating places of safety and security for children.

The program featured nationally recognized education leaders Dr. Sandra Bloom and Dr. Lourdes Ferrer, Ed D, who shared their informing research, practical insights and best practices on how to be aware of all that impacts our students ability to learn and to support their success. Their creativity, energy and personal experiences helped renew the participants’ commitment to our profession.

The Summit also featured a late afternoon session for parents, in Spanish. The parents were thrilled with Dr. Lourdes and totally engaged in the messages of her presentation, encouraging them and motivating their involvement in their students’ education.

The History of the Education Summit Founded on the belief that “teachers must be professional educators – trained, experienced, and committed not only to the children they serve but to the evolving craft of teaching,” our annual education summit convenes nationally recognized teaching experts and local teachers, administrators, psychologists and counselors to help turn theory into meaningful practice.

She is also the creator and leadership trainer for Navigating the American School System (NAES), a Hispanic Parental Involvement Initiative and In the Drivers Seat (IDS), two very poplar and dynamic academies for parents. Dr. Lourdes specializes in issues regarding English Language Learners, Hispanic and African American students and the No Child Left Behind Act. 11

SPECIAL EVENTS Dancing On The Stars Gala April 21, 2017 More than 200 guests gathered at Woodcrest Country Club for our annual Dancing on the Stars Gala to celebrate CPS and honor community leader and CPS Benefactor, Mindy Holman.

Guests enjoyed cocktails, dinner, dancing and a silent auction. A highlight of the evening was certainly when our alumna Genesis Santana shared her story about growing up in Camden’s Cramer Hill neighborhood.

Genesis follows in the footsteps of previous generations of students for whom our schools have provided the means to achieve the American dream. A 2013 graduate of St. Anthony’s school, Genesis earned a Domenica Scholarship to attend Paul VI High School. She graduated this June and has received a full scholarship to St. Joseph’s University.

Thank you to everyone who supported this wonderful event.

Together, we are working to make our shared mission for Camden’s children a reality.

Honoree Spotlight: Mindy Holman Chairman, Holman Enterprises Chairman of the Board of Trustees, United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey Mindy Holman was described as “perhaps the most unassuming, ego-less corporate head in America” by the

South Jersey Business Journal. This is how we at CPS know her. And why we chose to honor her at our annual Dancing on the Stars Gala on April 21, 2017.

Mindy is the third generation of Holman leadership at the helm of Holman Enterprises, a family-owned and operated business. Since its founding in 1924, Holman Enterprises has embraced an unyielding dedication to exceptional customer service and a devotion to giving back to the community.

The Holman organization is especially committed to supporting community organizations both financially and through personal involvement and Mindy leads by example.

Since our founding, Mindy has been a major benefactor of CPS. Throughout the years, she has been known to say, “kindness and success go hand-inhand.” Mindy certainly holds both in her hands.

SPECIAL EVENTS Dreams of Our Children May 12, 2017

Our annual showcase of student art, music and drama Nearly 500 parents, friends, faculty and community members gathered to celebrate our students’ creativity and talent, and to recognize their academic achievements. Students from the five Partnership Schools showcased their creativity and talent through the following performances at the Rutgers University – Camden Gordon Theatre.

• St Joe’s, St. Cecilia’s and Holy Name students performed dances • St. Anthony students delivered Shakespeare epilogues • Sacred Heart School Singers presented Inspiring Voices CPS students prepared all year for the 8th annual DREAMS of our Children event, which gave 280 of our children a voice to express themselves and to succeed. The Partnership Orchestra and Choir also gave wonderful performances.

The Dreams event also included presentations of student awards to one student in each of the five Catholic Partnership Schools, and 33 high school scholarships to graduating CPS students. Read more about our student awards on page 18.

Our ministry to children includes empowering their families to value education’s significance. By sharing with them a vision for the future, we create a community that provides the consistency, love, and nurturance needed for children to grow into fine adults.

About the Partnership Orchestra and Choir Orchestra: Nearly 100 students from all five CPS schools participated in the Instrumental Program this year. Throughout the school year, our first-year students attended weekly lessons with teachers from Symphony in C, and our advanced students were led by the CPS music teacher, Jameel Judge. Each CPS school masters a different family of instruments: Holy Name – percussion, Sacred Heart and St. Cecilia’s – strings, St. Anthony’s – brass, and St. Joe’s – woodwinds.

Choir: Under the direction of the SisterCities Girls Choir, 50 students from the five CPS schools practiced weekly in Camden. The CPS Choir participated in multiple workshops and collaborations with the NJ Youth Chorus, as well as the Greater South Jersey Adult Chorus. A few of their many performance venues included the iconic Theater of the Living Arts, The National Constitution Center and the African American Museum of Art in Philadelphia.

Elementary School Graduate: Danielle Perez Holy Name ‘17 From her earliest days in Kindergarten to her graduation day, Danielle’s bright smile lit up the room and her kind heart and willingness to help others served as an example to other students.

The youngest of three children of Daniel and Xiomara, Danielle was a straight A-student, star on the CPS cross country and basketball teams, student council president, and winner of the Partnership’s Excellence and Leadership award. She says that she loved her time at Holy Name because “The staff is very caring and loving. They push you to achieve your goals and they want to see you make it.”

It was this combination of academic achievement, commitment to goals, and active participation in school life that led her to receive the LanganNadell scholarship to Camden Catholic high school, where she will be a freshman this fall.

Danielle is the poster child for Catholic Partnership Schools, literally and figuratively.

She is a living example of the great people that come out of our schools.

AWARDS 2017 Student Awards The Catholic Partnership Schools Excellence & Leadership Award is presented to one student in each school.

The award recognizes the student’s academic achievement, strong work ethic and his or her commitment to education. The student has volunteered for leadership roles and helped with school projects and activities. The award recipient does more than pursue academic excellence. He or she encourages others to do so as well.

Parishioners from the Catholic Community of Christ our Light have been so present in our schools and with our students over the years that it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly when the relationship began. From the women and men who arrive each week to help with homework and English language support in the after-school VEN program, to the men’s service group that helps out with repair and construction projects during the annual parish-wide day of service, it feels like when help is needed, Christ our Light and its parishioners have always been happy to lend a hand.

Patricia Slater, the Pastoral Associate for Justice and Community Outreach who coordinates volunteer projects for the parish, is happy that this area of ministry has thrived. She shared, “No matter what form the service takes, our parishioners experience an ever-growing and deepening bond with our brothers and sisters in Camden, and we are enriched by those connections.”
