Who is Catholic Mission? Catholic Mission is the official mission aid agency of the Catholic Church in Australia and aims to reach out, give life and call all people in the world to faith, justice and love. Catholic Mission supports grassroots needs, identified by local Catholics in 1,100 dioceses across 160 countries, including remote Australia. These initiatives give people the opportunity for a full, enriched life—physically and spiritually— regardless of race, stigma, religion or gender. Locally and globally: • We answer the call to love God and to love our neighbour. • We work to establish the Reign of God. • We build communities of missionary disciples of Jesus who share their faith by proclaiming the Word, serving people in need, and acting for justice and creation.

Catholic Mission Immersion Programs Catholic Mission’s immersion programs offer local Indigenous and international immersion experiences to your senior students and teachers. These programs provide an opportunity to view the world through the eyes of mission, justice and development. An unrivalled experience for young people planning their future, they can be designed as co-curricular initiatives or as opportunities for your teachers to increase their awareness of mission in the world today. Catholic Mission has more than fifteen years’ experience in facilitating safe and invaluable immersion programs, supporting schools to not only maximise the experience for the students and teachers who participate, but also to engage the wider school community of parents and friends.

Advocacy Build your school’s Faith in Action opportunities by participating in Catholic Mission’s advocacy programs. With many of Catholic Mission’s programs dedicated to children, much of our advocacy work aims to raise global issues of concern for children locally and internationally. Since 2012 Catholic Mission has been a driver behind the Australian Coalition to End Immigration Detention of Children (ACEIDC). Along with seven other church and community organisations the ACEIDC has been championing the cause of children held in locked detention facilities by the Australian Government. Your school can get involved by taking a D4D (detention for children in detention), or by setting up your own ‘Free the Children’ cage with dolls in it. In addition, Catholic Mission is focusing its advocacy work for, and with, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. As a direct contributor to the Church‘s work in remote Australian dioceses, we continue to use our voice to support the first peoples of Australia.

Partnering with Indigenous Australians

Fundraising Without the thousands of loyal donors who give generously to the work of Catholic Mission, we would be unable to give life and hope to millions of people around the world— including children. In Australian schools, the main way that students can fundraise to help children in desperate need around the world is by participating in Socktober, either during October for World Mission Month or at any other time throughout the year. For Socktober, students are invited as a class or school group to raise money by creating a fundraising activity based around socks, or a World Mission Month-inspired theme; and to ask family and friends to sponsor them, either online or through cash donations.

Fundraising ideas include hosting a ‘Crazy Sock Day’; a ‘Rock Your Socks Off’ disco; completing a walk-a-thon wearing just socks; or even a ‘Sock-tion’, where the socks of well-known people, such as footballers, may be auctioned off. When your school fundraises for Catholic Mission, the money goes specifically to support projects that help children in need. Go to catholicmission.org.au/socktober for further information on Socktober, more sock-themed fundraising ideas and to download the many Socktober resources available.

World Mission Month As you know, October is World Mission Month! Pope Francis, in his first World Mission Day message, wrote:

“ The strength of our faith, at a personal and community level, can be measured by the ability to communicate it to others, to spread and live it in charity, to witness it to those we meet and share the path of life with us … We are all invited to walk the streets of the world with one’s brothers and sisters.” (World Mission Day 2013)

The month of October has been dedicated to reflecting on how we can participate in this mission of sharing God’s loving presence in the world. The World Mission Month resource is designed to encourage this reflection, learning, prayer and action. We understand that teachers know their students best, and that a range of differentiated resources supports them in meeting students’ diverse learning needs. What’s more, a range of resources and activities creates opportunities for students in the classroom: they can choose activities that suit their interests, abilities and learning preferences. The World Mission Month resource is designed with this in mind and is created by practitioners, for practitioners. catholicmission.org.au/wmm.
