here is much excitement and discussion about the recently released encyclical Laudato Si.

A Papal Encyclical is the name typically given to a circular letter written by the Pope to all Bishops, so they may circulate it to all the parishes in the Diocese they lead.

Laudato si: on the care of our common home, is the first Encyclical of the Pontificate of Pope Francis.

“Everything is connected,” the Pope writes. “Concern for the environment thus needs to be joined with a sincere love for our fellow human beings and an unwavering commitment to resolving the problems of society.”

In the coming months this encyclical will lead to action and much more information will be available. My aim here is to provide a background and brief overview so that we might set a true context in which to commence an in-depth study and understanding of the aims and purposes of this important communication from our Pope.

For your reference, I have included numbers to correspond to the part of the encyclical from which I have taken material.

Pope Francis had announced his intention to promulgate an environmental encyclical shortly after his election. The first draft was prepared by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and there were many Church leaders, such as the President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, Cardinal Peter Turkson, who contributed to the draft.

After repeated revision and review by the Secretariat of State (in view of the political implications) and the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (because of the theological positions) the final version was ready in March 2015. Since then the document has been translated into different languages for its publication.

The Encyclical takes its name from the invocation of Saint Francis of Assisi, “Praise be to you, my Lord” which in the Canticle of

We see right at the very core of this new encyclical the question which we must all ask of ourselves: “What kind of world do we want to leave to those who come after us, to children who are now growing up?” (160).

Human beings, while capable of the worst,, are also capable of rising above themselves,, choosing again what is good, and making a new start” (205).

The Encyclical is divided into six chapters.

It starts by presenting the current situation based on the best scientific findings available

Furthermore, Pope Francis explains: “This question does not have to do with the environment alone and in isolation; the issue cannot be approached piecemeal. This leads us to ask ourselves about the meaning of existence and its values at the basis of social life: “What is the purpose of our life in this world? What is the goal of our work and all our efforts? What need does the earth have of us?” “Unless we struggle with these deeper issues – says the Pope – I do not believe that our concern for ecology will produce significant results” (160).

Today this earth, mistreated and abused, is lamenting; and its groans join those of all the forsaken of the world. Pope Francis invites us to listen to them, urging each and every one – individuals, families, local communities, nations and the international community – to an “ecological conversion” in the expression of Saint John Paul II. We are invited to “change direction” by taking on the beauty and responsibility of the task of “caring for our common home”.

Happily, Pope Francis recognises that “there is a growing sensitivity to the environment and the need to protect nature, along with a growing concern, both genuine and distressing, for what is happening to our planet.” (19).

A ray of hope flows through the entire Encyclical, which gives a clear message: “Humanity still has the ability to work together in building our common home” (13).

today (Ch. 1), followed by a review of the Bible and Judeo-Christian tradition (Ch. 2).

The root of the problems in technocracy and in an excessive self-centeredness of human beings are analysed (Ch. 3).

The Encyclical then proposes (Ch.4) an “integral ecology, which clearly respects its human and social dimensions” (137), inextricably linked to the environmental question.

In this perspective, Pope Francis proposes (Ch. 5) to initiate an honest dialogue at every level of social, economic and political life that builds transparent decision-making processes.

Recalling that no project can be effective if it is not animated by a formed and responsible conscience (Ch. 6), ideas are put forth to aid growth in this direction at the educational, spiritual, ecclesial, political and theological levels.

The document is a call to conversion and action. While Laudato Si fits perfectly within Catholic tradition, it is saying with new force that concern for the environment is no longer “optional” for a believer. Caring for the environment is now even more clearly and surely part of the Church teaching. Archbishop Hart summed this up quite simply by saying “the Pope has put it front and centre that climate change and the needs of our world have to be part of the program of all Catholics”. Tongala’s High Tea takes the cake

TONGALA – Tea and good company was on the menu at St Patrick’s Tongala recently when 100 people attended the annual High Tea in the community centre.

The centre was transformed into a tearoom wonderland for the event,

with colourful teapots put to good use as patrons enjoyed bottomless cups of tea or coffee while they sampled the tasty treats on offer.

Delicate sandwiches, scones, petit fours and tantalising treats were served to guests, some who had travelled from as far away as Bendigo and Echuca to attend the event.

‘Cardinal Pell deserves the same justice we all demand’

IT is rare an entire society is traumatised. But it is undeniable we are all shattered by the evidence before the Royal Commission. We have seen the leering face of evil. Horror inflicted on the innocent by monsters.

Nothing has been more traumatic than the revelations of abuse in the Catholic Church.

That ministers of the kindest being ever to walk the Earth could be so cruel, is almost beyond belief. But it is beyond dispute, and those most appalled are themselves Catholic.

The victims were our friends, our families, ourselves.

Rage is an inevitable and entirely appropriate response.

But we must be careful our just rage does not lead to unjust responses.

The prime case here is Cardinal George Pell.

He is such a ready target for our fury.

Australia's senior Catholic.

Unafraid of unpopular opinions. A big man, bluff and undemonstrative.

Forget that in the '90s, as Archbishop of Melbourne, he pioneered the systematic tackling of child abuse.

Rage produces heat, not detached judgment.

The tearoom was decorated with large paper flowers and lace chandeliers as well as a quaint display of teapots arranged on an old style kitchen dresser.

Centre pieces on each table made a striking display as large glass jars and vases were filled with oranges and tortured willow branches, but the piece de resistance was the large

‘lolly bar’ in the centre of the room, bursting with confectionary of all shapes and sizes.

The Director of Catholic Education Sandhurst, Mr Paul Desmond and his wife Gay were special guests at the event along with Parish Priest Father Michael Morley and Echuca Parish Priest, Fr Des Welladsen.

The St Patrick’s community of staff, parents and some former students, who made use of a pupil-free day to assist with serving food and pouring tea, created a wonderful event which is a major fund-raiser for the school.

The Etiquette of High Tea in Tongala is an annual event not to be missed.

Golden Square development gets go-ahead THE Bendigo community is set to get a new bushland conservation reserve in Golden Square following approval by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) of plans which will see the downsizing of the Catholic Diocese of Sandhurst’s residential property.

The development includes donating almost half the property (7.15 hectares) to the Bendigo com-

munity as a bushland conservation reserve, along with a residential subdivision for 82 housing lots on the site at 133-136 Aspinall Street.

The Business Manager of the Diocese, Mr Cameron Fraser, said the bushland conservation reserve should be separated from the proposed development site within months and Stage 1 of the subdivision, comprising 34 lots, should

begin later this year. Stage 2, which includes 23 lots, should begin next year. Mr Fraser said the Diocese was grateful for the fair hearing it received at VCAT and believed the development struck a good balance between respecting the environment and releasing capital to the significant community works of the Diocese.

alternative ways of funding its social and welfare programmes in order to serve its community”, Mr Fraser said.

The broader community benefits of the development included the new bush land conservation reserve and the supply of sorely needed new housing stock only five kilometres from the CBD of Bendigo.

Parish says hooray for Junray

PARISHIONERS of St John’s Parish, Euroa, farewelled Deacon Junray Rayner as he prepared to depart for his home Diocese of Cebu in the Philippines, to take up ministry among his own people until his Ordination to the Priesthood in September.

After that he will return to Australia and to our Diocese to work for five years.

It has been a privilege to have Junray living and working in our Parish. He first came here on Good Shepherd Sunday on April 21, 2013, and spoke about Vocations. He has been with us for two Christmases and two Easters and many more weekends in between.

Over a couple of weeks there have been occasions arranged so people could wish him well for his Ordination and his trip home to see his family.

After lunch and nearing the end of the afternoon, wellknown local Author, Poet and gifted Storyteller, Rhonda Tallnash entertained us with her very funny poem Possum Problems, which had many people laughing.

Therese Hammil spoke on behalf of St John’s Parish Council in warmly wishing Deacon Junray “Best Wishes for his Ordination”. We all look forward to his return.

The special gifts given to him from the parishioners included a beautifully crafted and engraved Chalice and “Open Ciborium” (like a large paten for distributing Holy Communion).

When Fr Junray returns, his First Australian Mass will be in Euroa. At this stage that seems most likely to be in early October and Parish members will host a reception for him.

Handbook to guide Catholic employers and employees THE Australian Catholic Council for Employment Relations (ACCER) published a handbook for Catholic employers and employees, entitled Good Works: the Catholic Church as an employer in Australia.

Australian Catholic Bishops’ Delegate for Employment Relations, Bishop Les Tomlinson, launched the book on May 11 during the Bishops’ plenary meeting at Mary MacKillop Place, North Sydney.

The Catholic Church is one of Australia’s largest employers with over 180,000 employees

spread across a range of dioceses, congregations and agencies, employing 2% of the Australian workforce.

The book includes a section about the importance of work, work-life balance, the principles underpinning the Church’s social teaching on work and the employment relationship. It also details previous encyclicals about work.

Pope St John Paul II stated in Laborem Exercens, “The basis for determining the value of work is not primarily the work being done, but the fact that the one doing it is a person”.

Bishop Tomlinson said: “Workers in Catholic employment cannot merely be regarded as resources for delivering outcomes. Catholic organisations should particularly acknowledge and manifest the Church’s teachings on work and employment.

The theology of work underpins Catholic social teaching on the mutual obligations of workers and employers”.

Fr Michael celebrates 40 years KYABRAM – Friends and family gathered at St Augustine’s Church, Kyabram, on May 24 to celebrate Fr Michael Morley’s 40 years of priesthood.

Fr Michael was ordained in 1975, and has served in a number of parishes throughout the diocese over the past 40 years.

Mass was followed by a light lunch at the Brigidine Centre.

Father Michael Morley was born in 1944 in Moonee Ponds, the fifth child of six, born to Thomas and Kathleen Morley.

Father Michael attended St Monica’s Primary School in Moonee Ponds then St Bernard’s Secondary College before finishing his secondary education at St Joseph’s Technical School in South Melbourne where he enjoyed the practical subjects taught there.

In 1961 at age 16 Michael began work as an electrician with the biggest electrical business in the North Essendon area, employing 10 electricians.

Michael loved his work and did so well that, in later years, Gordon would groom him to take over the business.

During these early years as an electrician, Michael started attending Mass at 7am every morning with his mother Kathleen.

Michael worked 60-70 hours a week but on Sundays he put on the boots to play football

for YCW in Moonee Ponds. He played football until he was 21 and enjoyed the camaraderie on Saturday nights with his teammates and his girlfriend that he went out with for three years.

It was during this time that Michael felt the first stirrings of what he says were little “niggles”. He remembers talking to clients as he worked on electrical jobs and thinking wouldn’t it be nice to be able to help people.

The Morley family had a great family friend, Monsignor Ted Tehan, who was parish priest at Rushworth and then at Yarrawonga who would come to stay with them in Moonee Ponds. He was also an influence on Michael, as was Mons Tehan’s assistant, Father John Curtin. The Morley family was a loving, committed Catholic family who lived their faith.

Increasingly, Father Michael felt he was being nudged towards considering the possibility of entering the priesthood. During this time his sister Aileen was a very important confidante who talked things over with him lot.

Aileen had been in the convent when ill-health required that she leave the Order. Aileen is a talented poet and wrote many poems about her brother – one the day he was ordained is printed alongside this article.

Through discussions with his family and private

reflections, Father Michael says that he reached a point where he thought it was possible he might get accepted into the priesthood.

Bishop Bernard Stewart of Sandhurst endorsed Father Michael’s application and he went off to an interview where later that day it was confirmed he had been accepted.

Father Michael joined the priesthood in 1969 at Werribee Manor.

Michael made great friendships with the other 38 students of his year and says they all supported each other to understand the lectures and subject matter.

During the time Michael spent at Werribee he said he never once doubted that he was meant to be there. He felt he had found what he was meant to do.

After three years at Werribee followed by one year at Glen Waverley and then three years at Clayton, Father Michael was ordained at St Monica’s on Friday, May 23, 1975.

Father Michael would like to thank the hundreds of people who attended his celebration in the Brigidine Centre at St Augustine’s in Kyabram. He is extremely grateful to everyone who has supported him in the past 40 years, particularly his family and friends.

CWL retreat turns 25

THE 25th Retreat for Catholic Women, sponsored by the Catholic Women’s League, was held at Feathertop Chalet, in April.

The first Retreat was the very first event in the newly acquired Chalet, after it was purchased by Sandhurst Diocese. When asked what it was like, participants remember it being very cold as all talks were held in the Sports Stadium. This certainly is not a problem these days!

The description of the Retreat ,written in May 1991 issue of The Horizon mentions, “At this beautiful time of the year, with autumn trees of varying colours predominating, the scenery and surroundings were superb. Situated close to the small town of Harrietville, this Chalet is encircled by tree-covered mountains with a stream running by the picturesque grounds.” Everyone comments on how pretty the autumnal colouring is and how magnificent the surroundings.

Year after year one of the rooms has been set aside as a Chapel and beautifully decorated – in keeping with a place of worship and quiet contemplation.

This year is Fr Brian Carey’s 18th as Chaplain to the Catholic Women’s League. Prior to being

appointed Chaplain he attended Retreats run by the previous Chaplain, Fr Moylan. Fr Brian referred to the Year of Mercy, which had been announced by Pope Francis, on Divine Mercy Sunday.

We are called on to receive God’s mercy and extend it to others – “be a merciful presence to those who are suffering.”

Fr Tony Hill, Parish Priest of Euroa, gave the talks this year. Fr Tony, well-known for lateral thinking, based the five sessions on the Easter Readings, but managed to refer to Anzac Day, told some great tales of Easters past and family history and introduced poignant meaningful hymns and songs.

The only silence required at this Retreat is in the Chapel. Meal times, the free time between talks and especially the concert and singalong held on the Tuesday evening, are anything but silent. The latter is when great local talent is revealed, jokes and stories are shared and friendships deepened.

We extend our thanks to the Manager of Feathertop chalet, Patrick Murphy, for his warm welcome, helpfulness and enthusiasm.

Next year’s Retreat has been booked for the 18th, 19th and 20th April.

Putting a bit of play in your child’s day Structured and unstructured play

A

s parents we live such busy lives it can be easy to forget how important play was when we were kids; the time, energy and enthusiasm we devoted to using imagination, role playing, and creating make -believe worlds with constantly changing landscapes.

We now know that all this very serious fun contributes significantly to the development of social, emotional, cognitive and physical skills in children.

Play helps kids to develop speech, language, listening and social skills as well as teaching how to communicate, solve problems and resolve conflicts.

Structured play is organised and generally has expected guidelines, outcomes and adult involvement. This can include activities such as dance, swimming and sports, which contribute to a child’s motor development and enjoyment of movement.

Unstructured play is the type of play that ‘just happens’, evolving naturally depending on the child’s current interests.

It allows children to use their imagination and move according to their own pace.

This type of free play gives children the opportunity to dream, think, create, fantasise and explore. It promotes selfawareness by supporting children to develop some understanding of who they are and what they like to do.

Both types of play are important for a child’s development. However, it is essential that kids have some ‘down time’ rather than running from one scheduled activity to the next. Studies show that too much scheduled activity

can lead to anxiety, irritability, tiredness, headaches, tummy aches and sleeping issues.

Parish joins for patroness HEATHCOTE – Parishioners at Our Lady Help of Christians, Heathcote, have celebrated the 200-year anniversary of their patroness.

The title Our Lady Help of Christians originates from the tradition of Our Lady’s help from the victory of Lepanto in 1571 to the present day.

The official title was proclaimed in 1814 and first celebrated on May 24, 1815, in thanksgiving for the release of Pope Pius VII from Napoleon’s prison.

Parishioner Kaye Richardt said the community was full of gratitude to their dear patroness ‘Mary Help of Christians’ and to all who contributed to the joy of our celebrations.

“We thank Father Bernard McGrath who came to offer Holy Mass with Father Antony for us on Pentecost Sunday, May 24, with the help of alter servers Tom and Tim

McNutt and Dominic Stewart,” she said.

“Father McGrath crowned Our Lady’s statue while our ever-resourceful choir led us in Bring flowers of the fairest.

“After Mass we all followed Father McGrath in procession to the school with James Stewart, Peter Manton, Mario Azzopardi and Colin Stobaus carrying the statue and schoolgirls Tia Tobin, Monique and Miklaela Scoble, Jamie-Leigh Hearne and Scarlett Seymour strewing rose petals provided by Sandra Brouman. With Father Bernard we all prayed our Bishop’s prayer for Australia.”

All of this was enhanced by the backdrop of beautiful blue and white flowers and an altar banner lovingly made by Cheryl Connally, to proclaim the feast and depict our great pride and love of our own dear Mother as Australia’s patron under this title.

“The staff, students and families of our Holy Rosary School lifted everyone’s hearts with their cheerful presence, their reverent and willing participation in the liturgy and the

joyful entertainment they gave us after lunch,” Kaye said.

“All this was under the leadership of Principal, Noel Dillon, and Bernie O’Keefe. Students had an extra day to enjoy Our Lady’s kindness, having been given a holiday on May 25 to celebrate this momentous feast.

“True to form, all of the parishioners generously contributed to the delicious satisfaction of our taste buds and tummies at lunch and the O’Dee Centre was decorated with flowers provided by Terese Ryan. Thank you one and all.”

Men of all ages join for faith sharing at Echuca menALIVE

ECHUCA – 60 men, mainly from Echuca/ Moama as well as from all over Victoria and even Hobart, gathered at St Mary's Parish Centre, Echuca over the weekend of June 13-14 to explore their lives as men of faith as part of a menALIVE weekend.

In song, prayer, scripture, shared meals (provided so generously by many ladies of the parish), small group discussions, silence and personal reflection, this diverse group of men was united in sharing their thoughts, experiences, regrets, joys and hopes.

Many were surprised that their fears and doubts were common to others and most were grateful for this awareness and the opportunity to discuss and share.

The age range of men was from late teen to 85 years!

Most were fathers‌. all were sons and all could empathise with one or other of the characters depicted in the opening scripture - the Prodigal Son/Loving Father.

Small group discussions were interspersed with talks by experienced speakers on topics which included "The Father's Love", "The Father's Dream", "The Father's Son", and "To be a Man of God." There was also reflection on their relationships with wives, partners and daughters.

During the weekend there were also opportunities to take part in reconciliation and powerful yet informal ceremonies.

The St Mary’s 10am Sunday Parish Mass was enlivened by the presence of these

Music and mateship were part of the menALIVE weekend in Echuca. sixty men, seated together, singing lustily and sharing all ministries.

Our music man, Julian Acquisto, made a special journey from Woodend to lead the music throughout the menALIVE weekend and Julian, supported by two local male vocalists balanced by

Kate McLindon's beautiful voice also led the music ministry during the Mass.

Sophie Smith was baptised during the Mass and welcomed as our newest community member.

At the end of the Mass, all the men attending were invited to join Sophie and her parents

Rebecca and Simon and gather around the altar for a parish blessing and to praise the Lord mightily in song ... a truly moving finale to a wonderful Mass.

Between parish commitments, our Parish Priest, Fr Des Welladsen, had the opportunity to be involved in various

parts of the weekend and, when asked about his impression of it, he commented: “The menALIVE weekend managed to do what some priests have chipped away at for many years i.e. to create an environment where males feel comfortable enough to share with other men their faith

experiences, doubts, struggles and reliance on relationships.

The depth of sharing in groups was spirit-lifting, the honesty and listening skills highly encouraging and the overall attention to what was taking place heart-warming. A very worthwhile weekend for all.�

Corryong students’ First Communion

Isaac takes part in the Jump Rope for Heart program conducted as part of a parish social justice outreach.

Students jump to it for feast day CORRYONG – At Sacred Heart Corryong, the school and parish joined to celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on June 12.

The community gathered for a school Mass followed by a social justice outreach, which this year was Jump Rope for Heart.

Students rotated around a myriad of games, races and skill development activities

organised by the student leaders.

Parents joined in as students skipped and skipped and skipped.

For weeks before hand, teachers could be seen at playtimes spinning the ropes as students developed the confidence to first run through the rope, then jump, do tricks and even try over-the-moon.

Every two years Sacred Heart School participates in Jump Rope for Heart.

Congratulations to Sacred Heart School Corryong students Brooke Tregilgas, Nicola Costello, Brandon McNamara, Toby Vandervalk, Grace Shipman and Lachlan Vandervalk who celebrated First Communion recently. BENDIGO – CCB students have looked locally and globally to support and empower those in need and raise awareness about a variety of issues.

Students raised funds within their housegroup to buy vouchers and gift cards which

will be donated to Vinnies for distribution in our local community.

Heaters were turned off on a ‘Rug Up Day’ for the whole College community. Comfort and warmth triumphed over fashion and the day contributed substantially to the fund-raising total.

Students responded to the earthquake in Nepal with

impromptu coin lines at both sites.

House-coloured lines at La Valla encouraged students to make their line as long as possible, while at Coolock students aimed to take their line as far up Wright Street as possible. Together, $869.65 was raised and will be given directly to Caritas which is working in Nepal.

On Monday, May 25, a group of students positioned almost 3500 coins that were gathered through fund-raising to donate to Caritas’ Nepal Earthquake Appeal.

Galen Social Justice Co-ordinator, Skye Hunter said the 3.5m x 3.5m installation could be viewed in a number of contexts. “Although the initial purpose of the public artwork was intended to help raise student awareness of social justice issues and to inspire them to ‘be more’, the image flourished into quite a significant visual message of hope and compassion for those on the receiving end of our fund-raising efforts.�

Mrs Hunter also expressed that sometimes our thoughts and intentions never reach the people we help.

However, the group wishes that this image of hope will reach those in need and may instill a sense of courage and faith, as the Nepalese begin to rebuild their lives. “It has also been said that this image illustrates the good will of the Galen community, in rallying together to collect money to help those less fortunate.�

St Anthony Feast Day

Following Mass in Christ the King Church, a procession, headed by the statue of St Anthony, with the congregation reciting the Rosary, made its way around the local streets before returning to the church for the blessing of the bread by Parish Priest Fr Joven Lustre.

This year, it was Fr Jovenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wish that this celebration should be enjoyed by

Early in his encyclical, Pope Francis quotes draws upon the insights of Patriarch Bartholemew; “To destroy biodiversity, degrade the integrity of the earth, cause changes in climate, strip the earth of natural forests, wetlands and to contaminate earth’s waters, land, air and life “– these are sins” (8).

“Peace, justice and the preservation of creation are three absolutely interconnected themes, which cannot be separated and treated individually” (92). We must use the earth’s goods responsibly recognizing the value of other living beings, taking what we need, whilst protecting the earth to ensure its fruitfulness for future generations (67, 69).

The earth is “a shared inheritance, whose fruits are meant to benefit everyone” (93). The “principle of the common good”, extending to future generations, with “solidarity and a preferential option for the poorest of our brothers and sisters” must guide us.

“Intergenerational solidarity is not optional, but rather a basic question of justice, since the world we have received also belongs to those who will follow us” (158, 159). “Leaving an inhabitable planet to future generations is, first and foremost, up to us” and “it has to do with the ultimate meaning of our earthly sojourn” (182).

When we ask what kind of world we want to leave behind, Pope Francis says we need to think firstly of its general direction, “meaning and its values” and ask questions such as; “What is the purpose of our life in this world? Why are we here? What is the goal of our work and all our efforts? What need does the earth have of us?” (160) The ecological crisis summons all to an “’ecological conversion’, whereby the effects of their encounters with Jesus Christ become evident in our relationship with the world around them” (217). Conversion of heart brings attitudes of mind and heart expressed in our lives. “Living our vocation to be protectors of God’s handiwork is essential to a live of virtue; it is not an optional or a secondary aspect of our Christian experience” (217) and concern for the environment cannot be separated from “sincere love for our fellow human beings and an unwavering commitment to resolving the problems of society” (91). To bring about lasting change, community conversion is also needed (219).

The Pope reminds us to contemplate the wonder and beauty of creation, “to hear a message… a teaching which God wishes to hand on to us” (85). Every creature

is the object of God’s tenderness and has its place in the world (77).

“Nature is filled with words of love” (225).

It is time to be content to live with less, “replace consumption with sacrifice, greed with generosity, wastefulness with a spirit of sharing” (9). “Jesus …completely present to everyone and to everything, …showed us the way to overcome that unhealthy anxiety which makes us superficial, aggressive and compulsive consumers” (226).

Decision making for any “policy, plan or programme” must, from the beginning, take into account present and future risks and the impact on the environment and people (183, 184, 208).

We need to rethink ideas of progress. Real progress should lead to a better world. “A technological and economic development which does not leave in its wake a better world and an integrally higher quality of life cannot be considered progress” (194). If we view nature solely as a source of ‘profit and gain’ there are serious consequences for society, inequality, injustice and violence (82).

Good education begins in the family. “In the family we first learn how to show love and respect for life…” to ask without demanding, to say “thank you” as an expression of genuine gratitude for what we have been given, to control aggressivity and greed, and to ask forgiveness when we have caused harm. “These simple gestures of heartfelt courtesy help to create a culture of shared life and respect for our surroundings” (213).

Pope Francis’ message is for every individual, family, community and nation: “We need one another…we have a shared responsibility for others and the world” (LS 229).

“Everything is related…” (Pope Francis, Laudato Si “Praised be to you,” 70).

At the conclusion of this lengthy reflection which has been both joyful and troubling, I propose that we offer two prayers. The first we can share with all who believe in a God who is the all powerful Creator, while in the other we Christians ask for inspiration to take up the commitment to creation set before us by the Gospel of Jesus.

A prayer for our earth

verything is related, and we human beings are united as brothers and sisters on a wonderful pilgrimage, woven together by the love God has for each of his creatures and which also unites us in fond affection with brother sun, sister moon, brother river and mother earth.” (Pope Francis, LS 92*)

In Laudato Si: On Care for our Common Home, Pope Francis’ teachings are grounded firmly in the Scriptures and Church teaching, with inspiration from much loved saints including St Francis of Assisi. The Pope draws upon expertise from the Sciences and other fields of knowledge, to present an analysis of issues facing today’s world. He calls urgently for conversion of heart, for new ways of understanding and living in our relationships with God, God’s gifts of creation, and with each other, especially the poor, the vulnerable, generations yet unborn. Pope Francis restates the message of previous popes, that care for the environment, responsible use of the world’s resources integrated with action for justice, are not optional for Christians.

Our “human life is grounded in three fundamental and closely intertwined relationships: with God, with our neighbour and with the earth itself” (66). On earth “everything is interconnected” and “genuine care for our own lives and our relationships with nature is inseparable from fraternity, justice and faithfulness to others” (70).

Ancient bible stories tell us God is Creator of all and creation is good.

Human beings, the image and likeness of God, have a unique role in tending and caring for the rest of creation (Genesis 1-2)(67). Creation “is like a book telling us about God’s love,” a “gift and sign of God’s love and care…a caress of God” (85).

Each creature reflects “God’s infinite wisdom and goodness.” (Catechism 339).

Jesus lived in full harmony with creation (98). Others were amazed: “What sort of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?” (Mt 8:27). He invited his disciples to find God’s messages in the world: “Lift up your eyes, and see how the fields are already white for harvest” (Jn 4:35).

“The kingdom of God is like a grain of mustard seed…the smallest of all seeds, but once it has grown, it is the greatest of plants” (Mt 13:31-32)(97).

“He worked with his hands, in daily contact with the matter created by God” (98).

“The teachings of the Gospel have direct consequences for our way of thinking, feeling and living” and relating”(216). Christian spirituality is marked by “moderation and the capacity to be happy with little… simplicity which allows us to stop and appreciate the small things, to be grateful for the opportunities which life affords us, to be spiritually detached

All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of your creatures.

You embrace with your tenderness all that exists.

Pour out upon us the power of your love, hat we may protect life and beauty.

Fill us with peace, that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one.

from what we possess, and not to succumb to sadness for what we lack…avoiding…dominion and the mere accumulation of pleasures” (222). “It is a way of living life to the full” (223).

The world is “a web of relationships” (240) reflecting relationship in the Trinity, one God; the Father “ultimate source of everything, the loving and self-communicating foundation of all that exists”; The Son, Jesus Christ, present from the beginning: “All things have been created though him and for him” (Col 1:16, 99); The Spirit, infinite bond of love “present at the very heart of the universe, inspiring and bringing new pathways” (238).

In the Sacraments “The hand that blesses is an instrument of God’s love and a reflection of the closeness of Jesus Christ, who came to accompany us on the journey of life. Water poured over the body of a child in Baptism is a sign of new life” (235). “The Eucharist joins

heaven and earth…The world which came forth from God’s hands returns to him...Thus, the Eucharist is also a source of light and motivation for our concerns for the environment, directing us to be stewards of all creation” (236 ).

“Sunday, like the Jewish Sabbath, is meant to be a day which heals our relationships with God, with ourselves, with others and with the world...Rest opens our eyes to the larger picture and gives us renewed sensitivity to the rights of others.

And so the day of rest, centred on the Eucharist, sheds it light on the whole week, and motivates us to greater concern for nature and the poor” (237).

Human beings find the key to their own fulfilment through relationships, with God, with others and with creation. “Everything is interconnected” inviting us “to develop a spirituality of that global solidarity which flows from the mystery of the Trinity” (240). Our earthly home is

entrusted to us while we are on our journey towards God. Our destiny is to find ourselves “face to face with the infinite beauty of God” (1 Cor 13:12). Then, all the good existing here will be taken into the “heavenly feast” of eternity; “each creature… transfigured, will take its rightful place" (243).

O Lord, seize us with your power and light, help us to protect all life, to prepare for a better future, for the coming of your Kingdom of justice, peace, love and beauty.

“Catholic social teaching reminds us that human beings are called to act as stewards safeguarding the integrity of creation16. We need to change our ways of seeing the world, of thinking and behaving17, as we accept our responsibility to protect earth’s finite natural resources.

According to the principle of the universal destination of goods everyone has a right to access the goods of creation to meet their needs18—our lifestyles should not make such large demands on resources that others are left in need. We should practise simplicity, moderation and discipline.19 In the face of the consumer culture that surrounds us, this is a big challenge for each one of us.

The principles of solidarity and the common good remind us that we are all really responsible for each other and must work for social conditions which ensure that all people and groups in society are able to meet their needs and realise their potential. Every group in society should take into account the rights and aspirations of other groups, and the well being of the whole human family.20 Our personal choices—recycling, waste avoidance, composting, tree planting, car-pooling, prudent water and energy use—are important, but to achieve authentic sustainability, our personal actions must be reflected in the way in which economic and political systems are structured. As Christians we are challenged to analyse the social structures that force millions to live in squalor, burdened by crippling debt, while a tiny minority accumulate vast wealth from exploiting earth’s resources.

Structural changes will often need an international framework, but our responsibility for one another is not only international, it is also intergenerational— we have a sacred duty to ensure that the world that future generations inherit continues to reflect the glory of God. Our concept of the common good goes beyond any country or generation.”

ope Francis’ revolutionary new encyclical calls for a “broad cultural revolution” to confront the environmental crisis.

Laudato Si is also quite lengthy. Can it be summarised? In other words, what are the main messages, or “takeaways” of this encyclical?

The spiritual perspective is now part of the discussion on the environment.

The greatest contribution of Laudato Si to the environmental dialogue is, to my mind, its systematic overview of the crisis from a religious point of view. Until now, the environmental dialogue has been framed mainly with political, scientific and economic language. With this new encyclical, the language of faith enters the discussion—clearly, decisively and systematically.

This does not mean that Pope Francis is imposing his beliefs on those concerned about the environment. “I am well aware,” he says, that not all are believers (No. 62).

Nonetheless, the encyclical firmly grounds the discussion in a spiritual perspective and invites others to listen to a religious point of view, particularly its understanding of creation as a holy and precious gift from God to be reverenced by all men and women.

But the pope also hopes to offer “ample motivation” to Christians and other believers “to care for nature” (No. 64).

This does also not mean that other popes (and other parts of the church) have not spoken about the crisis—Francis highlights the teachings of his predecessors, particularly St. John Paul II and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. But in its systematic spiritual approach, this is a ground-breaking document that expands the conversation by inviting believers into the dialogue and providing fresh insights for those already involved.

The poor are disproportionately affected by climate change.

The disproportionate effect of environmental change on the poor and on the developing world is highlighted in almost every section of the encyclical. Indeed, near the beginning of “Laudato Si,” the pope states that focus on the poor is one the central themes of the encyclical, and he provides many baneful examples of the effects of climate change, whose “worse impacts” are felt those living in the by developing countries.

This is not simply the result of the power of the rich to make decisions that do not take the poor into account, but because the poor themselves have fewer financial resources that enable them to adapt to climate change.

Additionally, the natural resources of those poorer countries “fuel” the development of the richer countries “at the cost of their own present and future” (No. 52).

Throughout the encyclical, the pope appeals to the Gospels, to Catholic social teaching and to the statements of recent popes to critique the exclusion of anyone from benefits of the goods of creation.

Overall, in decisions regarding the environment and the use of the earth’s common resources, he repeatedly calls for an appreciation of the “immense dignity of the poor” (No. 158).

Less is more.

Pope Francis takes aim at what he calls the “technocratic” mindset, in which technology is seen as the “principal key” to human existence (No. 110). He critiques an unthinking reliance on market forces, in which every technological, scientific or industrial advancement is embraced before considering how it will affect the environment and “without concern for its potential negative impact on human beings” (No. 109).

This is not the view of a Luddite—in fact, Francis goes out of his way to praise technological advances—but of a believer who resists the idea that every increase in technology is good for the earth and for humanity. “Laudato Si” also diagnoses a society of “extreme consumerism” in which people are unable to resist what the market places before them, the earth is despoiled and billions are left impoverished (No. 203).

That is why it is the time, he says, to accept “decreased growth in some part of the world, in order to provide recourse for other places to experience healthy growth” (No. 193).

In contrast with the consumerist mindset, Christian spirituality offers a growth marked by “moderation and the capacity to be happy with little” (No. 222). It is a matter nothing less than a redefinition of our notion of progress.

Catholic social teaching now includes teaching on the environment.

Against those who argue that a papal encyclical on the environment has no real authority, Pope Francis explicitly states that “Laudato Si” "is now added to the body of the Church’s social teaching" (No. 15).

By the way, an encyclical is a type of teaching that enjoys the highest level of authority in

the church, second only to the Gospels and church councils like Vatican II. As such, it continues the kind of reflection on modern-day problems that began with Leo XIII’s “Rerum Novarum,” on capital and labor, in 1891. Pope Francis uses some of the traditional foundations of Catholic Social Teaching, particularly the idea of the “common good,” to frame his discussion.

In keeping with the practices of Catholic social teaching, the pope combines the riches of the church’s theology with the findings of experts in a variety of fields, to reflect on modern-day problems.

To that end, he explicitly links St. John XXIII’s “Pacem in Terris,” which addressed the crisis of nuclear war, with “Laudato Si,” which addresses this newer crisis.

Discussions about ecology can be grounded in the Bible and church tradition.

Wisely, Pope Francis begins the encyclical not with a reflection on Scripture and tradition (the two pillars of Catholic teaching), which might tempt nonbelievers to set aside the letter, but with an overview of the crisis—including issues of water, biodiversity and so on.

Only in Chapter Two does he turn towards “The Gospel of Creation,” in which he leads readers, step by step, through the call to care for creation that extends as far back as the Book of Genesis, when humankind was called to “till and keep” the earth.

But we have done, to summarize his approach, too much tilling and not enough keeping.

In a masterful overview, Pope Francis traces the theme of love for creation through both the Old and New Testaments.

He reminds us, for example, that God, in Jesus Christ, became not only human, but part of the natural world. Moreover, Jesus himself appreciated the natural world, as is evident in the Gospel passages in which he praises creation.

The insights of the saints are also recalled, most especially St. Francis of Assisi, the spiritual lodestar of the document. In addition to helping nonbelievers understand the Scripture and the church’s traditions, he explicitly tries to inspire believers to care for nature and the environment.

Everything is connected—including the economy.

One of the greatest contributions of “Laudato Si” is that it offers what theologians call a “systematic” approach to an issue. First, he links all of us to creation: “We are part of nature, included in it, and thus in constant interaction with it” (No. 139).

But our decisions, particularly about production and

consumption, have an inevitable effect on the environment.

Pope Francis links a “magical conception of the market,” which privileges profit over the impact on the poor, with the abuse of the environment (No. 190).

Needless to say, a heedless pursuit of money that sets aside the interests of the marginalized and leads to the ruination of the planet are connected. Early on, he points to St. Francis of Assisi, who shows how “inseparable the bond is between concern for nature, justice for the poor, commitment to society and interior peace” (No. 10).

Far from offering a naïve condemnation of capitalism, Pope Francis provides an intelligent critique of the limits of the market, especially where it fails to provide for the poor. “Profit,” he says, “cannot be the sole criterion” of our decisions (No. 187).

Scientific research on the environment is to be praised and used.

Pope Francis does not try to “prove” anything about climate change in this document. He frankly admits that the church does not “presume to settle scientific questions” (No. 188).

And while he clearly states that there are disputes over current science, his encyclical accepts the “best scientific research available today” and builds on it, rather than entering into a specialist’s debate (No. 15).

Speaking of the great forests of the Amazon and Congo, and of glaciers and aquifers, for example, he simply says, “We know how important these are for the earth…” (No. 38: my italics.)

As the other great Catholic social encyclicals analyzed such questions as capitalism, unions and fair wages, Laudato Si draws upon both church teaching and contemporary findings from other fields—particularly science, in this case—to help modern-day people reflect on these questions.

Widespread indifference and selfishness worsen environmental problems.

Pope Francis reserves his strongest criticism for the wealthy who ignore the problem of climate change, and especially its effect on the poor. “Many of those who possess more resources seem mostly to be concerned with masking the problems or concealing their symptoms… (No. 26).

Why, he asks, are so many of the wealthy turning away from the poor? Not only because “some view themselves as more worthy than others,” but because frequently decisions makers are “far removed from the poor,” physically, with no real contact to their brothers and sisters (No. 90, 49).

Selfishness also leads to the evaporation of the notion of the common good. This affects not simply for those in the developing

world, but also in the inner cities of our more developed countries, where he calls for what might be termed an “urban ecology.”

In the world of “Laudato Si” there is no room for selfishness or indifference. One cannot care for the rest of nature “if our hearts lack tenderness, compassion and concern for our fellow human beings” (No. 91).

Global dialogue and solidarity are needed.

Perhaps more than any encyclical, Pope Francis draws from the experiences of people around the world, using the insights of bishops’ conferences from Brazil, New Zealand, Southern Africa, Bolivia, Portugal, Germany, Argentina, the Dominican Republic, the Philippines, Australia and the United States, among other places. (In this way, he also embodies the Catholic principle of subsidiarity, which, in part, looks to local experience and local solutions.)

Moreover, the “new dialogue” and “honest debate” he calls for is not simply one within the Catholic Church (No. 14, 16).

Patriarch Bartholomew, the leader of the Eastern Orthodox Church, enters into the encyclical, as does a Sufi poet. In fact, the pope calls into dialogue and debate “all people” about our “common home” (No. 62, 155).

A global dialogue is also needed because there are “no uniform recipes.”

What works in one region may not in another (No. 180). The encyclical’s worldwide scope (as opposed to a more Eurocentric cast) makes it an easier invitation for a worldwide community.

A change of heart is required

At heart, this document, addressed to “every person on the planet” is a call for a new way of looking at things, a “bold cultural revolution” (No. 3, 114).

We face an urgent crisis, when, thanks to our actions, the earth has begun to more and more like, in Francis’ vivid language, “an immense pile of filth” (No. 21).

Still, the document is hopeful, reminding us that because God is with us, we can strive both individually and corporately to change course.

We can awaken our hearts and move towards an “ecological conversion” in which we see the intimate connection between God and all beings, and more readily listen to the “cry of the earth and the cry of the poor” (No. 49).

To use religious language, what the pope is calling for is conversion.

OPE Francis’ e n c yc l i c a l “Laudato Si’, on Care for Our Common Home” is a call for global action as well as an appeal for deep inner conversion.

He points to numerous ways world organisations, nations and communities must move forward and the way individuals – believers and people of good will – should see, think, feel and act.

Here are some of the pope’s suggestions, with references in parentheses to their paragraphs in the encyclical: – Do not give in to denial, indifference, resignation, blind confidence in technical solutions. (14, 59) – Have forthright and honest debates and policies; issues cannot be dealt with once and for all, but will need to be “reframed and enriched again and again” by everyone with plenty of different proposals because there is no one way to solve problems. (16, 60, 185) – Reduce, reuse, recycle. Preserve resources, use them more efficiently, moderate consumption and limit use of non-renewable resources. (22, 192) – Slash pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions. Transition to cleaner and renewable energies and replace fossil fuels “without delay.” (26, 165)

– Promote green construction with energy efficient homes and buildings. (26, 180) — Protect clean, safe drinking water and don’t privatise it with marketbased fees for the poor.

(27-29, 164) – Keep oceans and waterways clean and safe from pollutants; use biodegradable detergents at home and business. (30, 174) – Be aware that synthetic pesticides and herbicides will hurt birds and insects that are helpful for agriculture. So the indisputable collapse of a particularly ghastly allegation against Pell is highly significant.

It is a timely warning against rushing to judgment.

As recently reported in (The Herald Sun), a victim remembered that in 1969, George Pell was present at St Alipius's presbytery when he reported his abuse, and did nothing. A devastating allegation.

Usually, these things come down to a contest of memories.

But not this time.

George Pell was not in Ballarat in 1969, but at Oxford.

More, his passport proves it.

He did not return to Australia until 1971, nor live at St Alipius until 1973.

These are not defences, but demonstrable facts. So this case has grave implications.

No one is suggesting the victim has not suffered terrible abuse.

But it is clear anyone can genuinely misremember the remote past, particularly when deeply traumatised.

It also shows that when Cardinal Pell or anyone says “You are wrong”, it is not the same thing as saying “You are lying”.

Everyone is entitled to put their version of events and, when they prove it, to be believed.

Finally, how much more of what has been hurled against Pell falls into the same

category as this desperately sad saga?

Not lies or conspiracies on either side, but a media and public too ready to accept the worst.

To act not on demonstrated evidence, but justifiable rage, and a willingness to direct it at the biggest, closest target.

The issue here is not whether Cardinal Pell, who few know personally, is right in all his views, admirable or even likeable.

It is whether he is entitled to the elementary justice we would all demand for ourselves.

Of course, I do know Cardinal Pell.

He has been a friend for two decades, and I do like and admire him. Even though he is so big and determined.

But I have never admired him more than when he attacked child abuse in Melbourne when most governments, churches and organisations were clueless.

And Cardinal Pell has never seemed bigger or more determined than when we privately discuss child abuse.

Priests shouldn't hate, but Pell hates child abuse as someone who has seen it brutalise his flock and betray his church.

As the record shows.

MARY DOOGAN qualified in 1978 as a nurse and 1979 as a certified midwife. From 1982 to 1987, she worked as a midwife in Saudi Arabia where she dealt with a wide range of maternal medical complications.

In 1987 Mary joined the midwifery staff at Glasgow’s Southern General Hospital Maternity Unit and was quickly promoted to staff midwife - labour ward co-ordinator. Many thousands of babies have been born under her supervision over the 27 years of her employment there.

In 2007 changing practices in the labour ward meant staff midwives such as Mary would have to provide supervision of abortions. Mary and her colleague Connie Wood sought to assert their right to conscientious objection under the 1967 UK Abortion Act.

Writing Church history Sandhurst historian Mal Nolan brings to life another chapter of our diocesan history

T

he current series of Church history articles in SandPiper started in 2009 and so far 63 articles have been published.

The emphasis has been on the Diocese of Sandhurst and the articles have been about people, events, places and organisations. The aim has been to select items likely to be of general interest and to ensure that the articles are factually correct.

In 1896, Cardinal Moran, Archbishop of Sydney, published a monumental work entitled A History of the Catholic Church in Australasia. This is nearly 1000 pages in length. He stated at the beginning that “it is an indisputable fact that many books relating to church history are singularly dull, and calculated to repel rather than to attract the reader”. The SandPiper articles aim to avoid this!

Cardinal Moran’s history follows an approach to historical writing that has been very common in the past. The cardinal believed that history should be edifying to the reader. If past events were not edifying or if there was any possibility that controversy might be scandalous in nature, then they had no place in church history.

It was only in the 1960s that authors approached the writing of Church history in any kind of analytical way. Patrick O’Farrell, a layman who later became Professor of History at the University of NSW was the first to do this in Australia.

Since that time, a number of priest-authors have continued this approach.

Most recently, Rev Dr Chris Dowd, a Dominican priest has published a detailed and critical analysis of the life of the church in Australia for the period up to 1884 (the year that Archbishop Moran arrived in Sydney). This deals particularly with the papacy and the many conflicts with the Australian mission. Lay people have also contributed significantly, a recent example being the book on Archbishop Mannix by Brenda Niall which provides a more balanced account than many of the previous biographies.

Obviously, any accounts are dependent on access to information on events in the past and a willingness to interpret these in the light of the evidence.

With the exception of records of baptisms and marriages which were/are kept in the region where a priest resided, there are very few original documents on the early history to be found in the Sandhurst Diocesan archives.

Some original material belonging to Dr Backhaus has survived, but it is ironic that documents on the early history of the diocese after its formation in 1874 often have to be obtained from the originals that were submitted to the Sacred Congregation de Propaganda Fide in Rome and held in the archives of this congregation! It would appear that church officials had little interest in keeping records or that subsequent officials have

seen little need to retain them. Although there is a section of Canon Law that requires records to be kept, it has not received much recognition over the years.

There are virtually no records relating to the first two bishops of Sandhurst.

The third bishop, John McCarthy (1917-1950) did keep brief records, mainly in the form of notes in his copy of the Ordo Divini Officii, a Church publication that listed the liturgy and other matters associated with the various seasons of the year.

He used this as a kind of diary. Thus each day listed his activities that might include a note on a confirmation ceremony, travel to various parishes, a decision to transfer a priest from one parish to another or even that he had an appointment with the dentist!

Much of the detail that is known on the early history comes from newspapers of

the period. In that era, the newspaper was the main form of communication.

Fortunately many of these newspapers have survived. Most towns had a newspaper that appeared at least once a week and the bigger towns had at least one daily newspaper.

News of happenings in the churches was published in considerable detail up to the 1950s. The major problem for the researcher in using newspapers was that it was necessary to know where to look.

In recent years, many newspapers have been digitised by the National Library of Australia through a system called TROVE. This has made researching a pleasure rather than the chore it was when weeks of work, and considerable eye-strain, would be required to find some information from microfilm copies. The digitised version allows word-searches

and opens sources of information that were virtually impossible to access before this development.

As mentioned above, emphasis in these SandPiper articles has been on recording an accurate picture of events of the time.

Some previous authors have not portrayed events accurately and in some cases have “dressed up” the record. An example of this is the reporting of the departure of Dr Backhaus from Sandhurst in 1863.

One account stated that in 1863, Dr Backhaus decided to have a holiday in the form of an overseas trip. In fact, in plain English, Dr Backhaus had a dispute with Bishop Goold, resigned his role in Sandhurst and left Australia without any intention of returning!

While this example is probably trivial in the whole order of things, it illustrates the mindset of the author and there is a very large number of more significant examples that could be given to illustrate this point.

In writing history, the author is of course always dependent on the information that is available at the time and the accessibility of that information. There is an old saying that “knowledge is power”. History shows that the institutional Church has been no different from civil authorities in limiting access to information.

Also, in the past, many authors have simply not had the time, or financial resources, to search out information that has been hidden away in church or civil records. This has meant that the written history has often provided

only a partial or slanted record of events.

The availability of data bases of various types on the internet has also made information available that, in the past, was in a practical sense almost impossible to obtain. Information from these sources is continually increasing.

However, probably the main requirements for researching Church history are to have plenty of time and perseverance so that one is not discouraged when a brick wall is encountered!

Our picture shows one page in Moran’s history (page 792) that relates to Bendigo. An interesting illustration included shows Dr Backhaus’ grave with the first St Kilian’s stone church (demolished in 1888, six years after burial) in the background. Other illustrations include a bust of Dr Backhaus, an artist’s impression of his first presbytery and tent church and St Mary’s Convent.

Our response to ecological challenges BENDIGO – Dr Elaine Wainwright will be visiting Bendigo on Thursday, August 6, to present the annual public Marian Lecture at Catholic College Bendigo, titled Re-membering Mary in an Age of Ecological Imperatives.

ISIS marks first anniversary as Christians mourn losses

AN arson attack on a church in Israel, revered as the site of a miracle by Jesus Christ, is part of a deepening cycle of violence against Christians, according to a Holy Land bishop who fears worse is to come.

Auxiliary Bishop William Shomali of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem said the attack on Thursday, June 18, on the Catholic Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves close to the Sea of Galilee, increases his concerns that extremist Jews are out to target other faith communities, notably Christians.

A Benedictine monk and a visitor to the site in Tabgha were treated for smoke inhalation, following the blaze which badly damaged buildings constructed on the site believed to be where Christ performed the miracle of the feeding of the five thousand.

In a message to Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need which helped build an oratory on the site, Bishop Shomali said the incident increased his fears that extremist Jews “are increasing in number and in the degree of intolerance”.

He said: “There is a real escalation in the anti-Christian violence,

A souvenir shop, an office for pilgrims and a meeting room were reportedly badly damaged in the blaze, which destroyed Bibles and prayer books.

The words “all idols will be smashed” – an extract from a Jewish prayer – was sprayed in red paint on a wall outside the church.

Within hours of the blaze, the Israeli government condemned the violence.

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin stated: “Such terrible desecration of an ancient and holy place of prayer is an attack on the very fabric of life in our country.

“Israel, as a state and a society, is obligated to protect and preserve the holy sites, for all faiths.”

Thanking the regime for its swift response, Bishop Shomali said: “I am inclined to think that the act is perpetrated by a very small and aggressive group.”

“My fear is that these radicals are increasing in number and in the degree of intolerance.”

GOVERNMENTS should step up efforts in Iraq to “free” Mosul and neighbouring Nineveh from socalled Islamic State so Christians and others can fulfil their dream of returning home – according to a leading archbishop from the region.

Marking the first anniversary of the fall of his city to the Islamist terror group, Syrian Catholic Archbishop Yohanna Mouche made an impassioned plea to the “people who have the responsibility” to remove IS and enable people forced out, to return and rebuild their lives.

In an interview with Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need, the Archbishop of Mosul, Kirkuk and Kurdistan said that 12 months on from their expulsion by the militants, Christians displaced to Kurdish northern Iraq still longed to go back home. He insisted that forcing out IS was the “best solution” for 120,000 displaced Christians effectively expelled from Mosul on June 10 and Nineveh, where towns and villages including 13 largely Christian ones, were seized by IS on the night of August 6.

Underlining the misery of Christians who left their communities with nothing, Archbishop Mouche said: “The only solution that will make them happy and give them dignity is to go back to their homes…

“We ask everyone to put pressure on the people who have the responsibility to free the [towns and villages] as soon as possible, so the people can come back and live in peace in their … homes and continue their lives there.

“This is the best solution.”

In an appeal to Christians in the West, he said: “I ask you to pray for us … especially for our political leaders, to help them find the solution that will allow us to go back to our cities.”

Meantime, one of Archbishop Mouche’s priests from Mosul, Syrian Catholic Father Georges Jahoula reported that on June 9, IS marked the first anniversary of its capture of the city by converting the Syrian Catholic church of St Ephraim into a mosque.

TO “transform a shared home into a family, through dialogue” – this is the “challenge” for the Church in the Holy Land, according to Archbishop Giuseppe Lazzarotto, the Papal Nuncio in Israel and Apostolic Delegate for Palestine.

Speaking to the Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN), he was commenting on the recent arson attack on the Church of the Multiplication in Tabgha on the Sea of Galilee by Jewish extremists, one

of the symbolic places of Christianity in the Holy Land.

“These actions are a cause of great bitterness to us since, although not shared by the majority of the population, they express an attitude of closure, of refusal to accept the presence of those who are different from them”, the Archbishop told ACN. Nonetheless, the Christian community

is not allowing itself to be discouraged by these events, the Nuncio explained, but is continuing to pursue the path of dialogue.

Dialogue between Christians of course, but also with Jews and Muslims. “This is what Pope Francis is constantly recalling us to do – to educate ourselves and others to dialogue.”

‘Love thy neighbour’ says bishops MIDDLE EAST

EAST Patriarchs have called on their faithful to forge closer ties with Muslim neighbours in the struggle against Islamist ideologies, saying that extremism threatens people of all faiths.

In a joint pastoral message, the five Patriarchs of Antioch (in modern-day Turkey, close to the Syrian border) said most Muslims in the region oppose the Takfi ri fundamentalist Sunni Muslim ideology which condemns liberalising influences within Islam and is seen as encouraging violence.

Directing their comments at the Christian faithful, the Patriarchs stated: “Our [Muslim] partners are aware of your sufferings and sympathise.”

Calling on Christians to “remain on very good terms with our Muslim brothers and sisters”, the Patriarchs said many local Muslims “are working with their leaders to confront and eradicate completely Takfiri thought…

“It is high time to confront Takfiri ideology, to dry out its well-springs by teaching the kind of religious education that encourages an attitude of openness, peacefulness and freedom of belief.”

The pastoral message was released after a meeting in the Greek Orthodox Al Maryamiyah Church in Damascus.

Putting their names to the message were five Patriarchs of Antioch and All the East – Greek Orthodox

John X, Melkite Greek Catholic Gregorios III, Syrian Catholic Joseph III Younan, Maronite Bechara Boutros Al Rai and Syrian Orthodox Ignatius Afrem II. In their pastoral message, the Patriarchs go on to urge their congregations to engage in the kind

of “critical thinking” that aims to establish citizenship for religious minorities in Islamic countries.

All five Antiochian Patriarchs were keen to stress solidarity, saying that violence and other terrorism was the work of minority groups and that the majority of Muslims were

“partners in our homeland and its destiny”.

The Patriarchs’ message went on to reiterate calls to the international community to help end the crisis in Syria and to find “peaceful and political solutions to conflicts”.

The statement also asks foreign governments to help displaced people return to their homelands and reclaim their properties and “to protect their rights as citizens.”

It is estimated that since 2003, one and a half million Christians have been forced to leave their villages and their homes in Iraq and Syria.

With no end in sight to the migration of people of all faiths from Syria and elsewhere in the Middle East, the Patriarchs appealed to the world to pray for people caught up in the suffering.

Directing their comments at the international community, the Patriarchs stated: “Do not neglect this invitation for the salvation of the world.

“Be sure that in you the Gospel of Christ will remain effective in the Church of Antioch.”

ACN is renewing appeals for prayer for the region.

Since the crisis in the Middle East erupted in 2011 with the Arab Spring, Aid to the Church in Need has provided food, shelter and medicine to thousands of Christians and others both internally displaced and living as refugees abroad.

Homs refugee service continues SYRIA

AT the moment, there probably is not a more dangerous or arduous job that the Jesuit order could have assigned: for years the Syrian Jesuit priest Fr Ziad Hilal has been helping the victims of the war in Syria.

From Homs, a city that has long been the focus of fierce battles between the Syrian government and the insurgents, he has been organising

humanitarian aid for refugees through the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS).

Large parts of the city have completely been destroyed.

One of Father Ziad’s fellow priests, a Dutch Jesuit by the name of Fr Frans van der Lugt, was murdered here by rebels in 2014.

“We already began providing aid to war refugees in 2011,” Father Ziad said. “Unfortunately, we haven’t run out of work since.” “After all”, the priest continued, “the people usually arrive with only one suitcase”.

“They have lost everything and are

thus dependent for all of their needs.

We make sure they have a flat, food, clothing and hygiene items.”

The latest wave of refugees is coming from Aleppo. Hundreds of thousands of people are still living in what was once a metropolis of millions in the northern part of Syria, among them tens of thousands of Christians.

However, a growing number of them are leaving the city because of fighting between the government and the rebels. “At the moment we are taking care of about 300 Christian families from Aleppo.

In telegrams sent by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro, Parolin, to the governments of the three countries, the pontiff said he was united in prayer with the relatives of the victims.

He prayed, too, for the souls of those who perished in the attacks, and offered his condolences to those who were wounded and to their families, praying that the Lord might give them “comfort and consolation in their trials”.

Pope Francis condemned yet again “the violence which causes so much suffering” and prayed that God “might grant the gift of peace.” He concluded his messages with “divine blessings” for the families of the victims and for the populations of the three countries.

Thirty Britons are known to have died in the Friday attack in Sousse, a Tunisian beach resort, with that figure expected to rise, after at least one gunman linked to ISIS opened fire, killing 38 people.

Thirteen people were killed when a suicide bomber attacked a Shia mosque in Kuwait on Friday, while near Lyon, in France, a factory boss, Herve Cornara, was beheaded by Yassin Salhi, who had previously been investigated for his alleged links to Islamist militants.

France’s President Francois Hollande said the killing bore “the hallmarks of a terrorist attack” .

The Pope’s condemnation and condolences came after remarks from Cardinal Parolin, who told Vatican Radio, “[The attack was] something most cruel and inhuman, truly unthinkable: to be condemned in the strongest possible terms.”

Cardinal Parolin went on to say, We must hope that, in the name of God, no more violence is committed.”

Quake forces Nepalis to walk on water

SANDHURST Diocese has responded to the Nepal earthquake crisis with characteristic generosity, contributing around $60,000 to date. The following personal account is written by Caritas Australia’s Communication Manager, Angela Ford.

The building alarm pierced our post-lunch slump, the thrust and shakes propelled us out the building unlike the previous 17 days of aftershock warnings. As I sprinted from the building, the line of evacuees ahead swayed to a rhythm that only nature could own. At that stage I remember thinking the earthquake was massive but in a short time I would re-enter the building and return to work.

As a kiwi I had grown up with earthquakes. I remember them large, small and intrusive. I was awed by their power but always cherished the still that inevitably followed.

This is what made Nepal’s second major earthquake so different for me. I will never forget the beginning of the 7.3-magnitude quake, but will never recall the end.

The deadly second earthquake rolled like the largest of ocean swells, rocking and waving motion sickness, headaches and exhaustion through us. For what seemed like hours we were pummelled with more aftershocks. Each of them with the same effect: screams and cries from our local Nepalese staff and volunteers; heightened concern for poor Nepal’s families, homes and communities still aching from the 7.8-magnitude earthquake some 2 weeks prior; and a reminder of our insignificance against the mightiness of tectonic plates responsible for Nepal’s Himalayas.

I cannot remember any significant stillness from that afternoon or evening. In fact, when I lay to sleep that night in our guesthouse some 10 hours after the main temblor, I felt like I was tucked up in a ferry cabin for the evening’s sailing. Overnight, aftershocks startled us from our tidal stupor and those of us sleeping indoors, evacuated to the lawn joining our colleagues who felt safer in

My perspective was verified by many that this earthquake was massive. But I was reminded by many more that this earthquake paled in length and strength to the 7.8-earthquake that paralysed Nepal on April 25.

The Nepal Government report that together both earthquakes have caused nearly 9,000 deaths, destroyed nearly 500,000 homes, severely damaged over 250,000 more, and affected more than eight million people in 39 of Nepal’s 75 districts.

In the days and weeks that followed the first earthquake, Nepal quickly became saturated with humanitarian agencies, government and multilateral pledges and commitments, and countless organisations of goodwill. On arriving one week after the first earthquake and travelling through Kathmandu’s tiny airport and scarred city, it became apparent the numbers of staff, stakeholders and volunteers representing the myriad organisations were comparable to the

number of tarpaulins plastered like bandaids all over wounded Nepal.

This global outpouring of empathy, solidarity, commitment and goodwill is important and impressive, but it is the resilience, determination and strength of Nepal’s people that are critical, inspirational and lifechanging at this exigent time.

Nepal is a country of rampant natural power – with her mountains, glaciers, valleys, rivers and lakes being some of the largest, deepest and strongest in the world. Nepal is a nation of unbridled human strength – a society of undefeated leaders such as Gurkhas, Sherpas, porters, warriors and survivors who have withstood colonial rule and natural disasters and helped build and sustain communities in the most challenging of terrains.

It is from this remarkable land and lineage that my colleagues at Caritas Nepal operate. Caritas Nepal is the social arm of the Catholic Church in Nepal. It is estimated that less than 1 per cent of Nepal’s 30 million people are Christian. Yet with support from the international Caritas family, Caritas Nepal ordinarily works in over

50 of Nepal’s 75 districts, helping the most marginalised women, men and children fight poverty, realise justice and peace, and effectively respond to humanitarian emergencies.

Many of the representatives from the international Caritas agencies, who are supporting Caritas Nepal in their response to the earthquakes, are seasoned emergency experts who unite before, during and after all significant emergencies to co-ordinate the network’s response. Yet the earthquake of May 12 was the biggest the majority of us had been in. It was primarily only our local staff and volunteers who had been in bigger, just a few weeks prior on April 25.

When we huddled after the earthquake, we could easily move into response mode. We knew our homes, family and friends were safe. We knew we were there for a finite period and would not endlessly continue in the uncertainty of the earth’s tremors.

We knew that if we wanted to leave at any time our home agency would support our exit and substitute us for a fresh colleague. Our Caritas Nepal colleagues, the thousands of staff and

volunteers across similar organisations, and the millions of families across Nepal respond to the crisis without these comforts.

The timeliness of humanitarian assistance following a major disaster is critical. A singular event like an earthquake, especially for those in impoverished communities, can derail a family’s stability, deplete a lifetime of savings and push them over the edge into poverty. The devastation to infrastructure, economy and reserves can set communities back a generation.

In all emergencies, the first people to respond are the local women, men and children who live in the areas of impact. I joined a community assessment in a hill-top village in Lalitpur.

Every house was destroyed or severely damaged, household goods buried, and the village water pump was broken. Yet the community had responded immediately by salvaging what they could and using their minimal savings to purchase a few critical tarpaulins and other supplies to create makeshift shelters, and walking over 3 hours (17 km) to source clean water. I witnessed a hub of activity, ideas and innovations; resilience and immediate village level responses that are bolstered by humanitarian response teams and supplies.

The success of global humanitarian response agencies hinges on partnerships and relationships with local agencies, government and communities. With 87 per cent of Nepal’s population living in rural areas, the challenging infrastructure and geography, and the extent of destruction and damage from these earthquakes, aftershocks and landslides, local expertise, language and cultural knowledge are paramount to success.

Most are affected by their own loss and damage, yet every day Nepali women and men face their fears, tackle their trauma and encounter uncertainty to help others and serve. All have been responding for longer than us and all have suffered more than us. Each has lived through the bigger, more lethal earthquake and endless aftershocks. With every tremor they are forced to walk on water, but every day they choose to serve as Jesus did.

Pope’s new department will investigate bishops

P

ope Francis has approved a new Vatican department which will judge bishops accused of covering up or not preventing sexual abuse of children.

A statement from the Vatican on June 10 said the department would come under the auspices of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, “to judge bishops with

regard to crimes of the abuse of office when connected to the abuse of minors”.

The new department is being reported as “a breakthrough moment on an issue that has plagued the church globally”.

The changes establish clear procedures to make bishops more accountable for abuse in their dioceses, even if they were not directly responsible for it and could also see bishops judged if they had failed to take measures to prevent sexual abuse of minors.

CEO of the Catholic Church’s Truth Justice and Healing Council, Francis Sullivan said the call to hold bishops and church leaders accountable has been loud and clear for many years.

“This move by the Pope places Church leaders around the world and here in Australia on notice that they have a role to play in responding to and preventing child sexual abuse and that if they fail, they will be judged and possibly lose their jobs.

“The Pope has now made it very clear that no one within the Church will be protected

if they have done the wrong thing,” Mr Sullivan said.

The Vatican said the Pope had approved proposals made to him by the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, established lasted year to advise him on reforms to the way in which the Church prevents abuse and works with victims.

The new system contains a set of five points agreed upon by the Pope: 1. A “duty” to report “allegations of the abuse of office by a bishop connected to the abuse of minors” to the Vatican;

2. Power to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to judge bishops; 3. The creation of a new judicial section in that congregation, along with personnel, to undertake service in the Tribunal; 4. A new secretary, or second-in-command, for the doctrinal congregation to head the tribunal; and 5. A five-year period “for further development of these proposals and for completing a formal evaluation of their effectiveness.”

Suffering a cold path to love

W

e had a heavy frost this morning. The ice lay like snow on the front lawn, and the air was so still and cold, not even the birds were up.

Buttoned up in my quilted jacket, I pulled my scarf up to my chin, and my hat lower as I walked around the glassy lake. As I reached the top end, the frost lying in the shadow of the boat house was thick and crisp. Another had been there before me, before the pale sun had tipped the horizon. On the clipped grass, someone had walked out a large heart. Above the heart, the word “LOVE”.

Why, I wondered, was love frozen outside the frozen heart?

Viktor Frankl argues that “Suffering ceases to be suffering at the moment it finds a meaning.”

Yet what meaning can we find in those parts of our lives in which we encounter the deep chill of winter, the aching cold of frozen hearts?

When suffering comes – whether it be loneliness, grief, or physical, emotional or spiritual pain in any guise, it leaves us bereft. Something is taken away, something is lost. We are not what we know ourselves to be. And we don’t know how to be anymore.

Whether we wish it or not, all our masks and defences drop away.

We are revealed to ourselves as we

are, as suffering insists we leave behind the life we knew.

Perhaps the deepest of griefs is loneliness. Each of us must travel our own life path. No-one else can do it for us. The heart rimmed with ice is our own heart, and with the psalmist we lament, “My tears have been my food, while they say to me all day, Where is your God?” (Ps. 42).

Suffering brings us low indeed, where even the faith that up until now has sustained us is full of doubt. The grief that finally broke Jesus’ heart was in his cry to the Father – Why have you abandoned me?

Yet it is in this very moment that his Father gathers his beloved Son to him.

Perhaps a meaning to be found in suffering could be that it creates the space in our hearts for Love to enter. As we face our truth, we become humble; as we hope for understanding, we become understanding. As we learn to accept our losses, we become merciful.

The life path we find ourselves travelling is Jesus’ way of the Cross – and we are not alone.

For even as it seems that the night will never end, and the chill will never leave our hearts, the sun rises, and Love bids us welcome.

In Dublin pubs, you can ask for “a pint”or “a glass”, (which is a half-pint). Either way, it’s filled with Guinness – what else? It is, as they say, “Good for what ails yer.”

Beef and Guinness Casserole •

750g oyster blade steak, trimmed

and cubed into

5cm pieces •

2 onions, diced

•

2 carrots, sliced

•

1 bay leaf

•

1 small bottle of Guinness

•

1 beef stock cube

•

Salt and pepper

•

½ cup plain flour

•

3 tblespns. oil for browning

•

Topping:

peeled and sliced finely.

Preheat oven to 160C. Heat 1 tblspn oil in a frying pan.

Add chopped onions and cook, stirring until transparent. Remove to the casserole and add carrots. Cook for 3 minutes and add to casserole.

adding salt and pepper to taste.

Add the rest of the oil to the frying pan, and brown the meat in 3 batches. (You may need to add a little more oil.) Add to the casserole, and tuck in the bay leaf.

Brown the rest of the seasoned flour in the pan, and stir in the Guinness, allowing it to bubble up, and reduce slightly. Add the beef stock cube, stir until dissolved, and the sauce is lump-free.

Tip the sauce into the casserole, and mix gently. If necessary, add a little water until just below the level of the meat and vegetables. Place sliced potatoes on top, to cover.

Place lidded casserole into oven on lowest shelf, and cook gently for 2-2 ½ hours. Remove lid for the last 30 minutes to brown potato topping.

Serve with steamed broccoli and green peas.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and pe on, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:6,7

Loreto Sisters celebrate 140 years of teaching in Australia T his year, Loreto celebrates 140 years in Australia thanks to our pioneering Loreto Sisters from Ireland.

Travelling to an unknown and distant land from the comforts of her home in Ireland, Mother Gonzaga Barry stepped off the SS Somersetshire Ship on to Australian soil on July 19, 1875. This was to become a defining moment in the history of Loreto that continues to shape its future.

The arrival of Loreto’s pioneering Sisters was a response to an appeal from the Bishop of Ballarat, Dr O’Connor asking the Sisters to lead a mission by opening the first Loreto School to open in Ballarat, Victoria.

The sacrifices Mother Gonzaga and her nine companions made in leaving behind family, friends and other loved ones to enter the unknown are still being felt today by Loreto women and men touched by her profound legacy.

“Mother Gonzaga would have been very fearful to travel so far from home, as she was not a well-travelled person.

However, she had a steely determination to serve God and would have answered any call made to her,” said Loreto Province Archivist Robin Scott.

The 59-day journey to Victoria was long and arduous to say the least, with accounts from the Sisters saying “the ship was constantly

One man died from bronchitis on their voyage, as Mother Gonzaga wrote in her diary, “the great cold and damp here generally make an attack fatal. On the last voyage, two gentlemen passengers died.”

To understand fully Mother Gonzaga’s character, it is important to appreciate her background. Born into a middle class family in Wexford, Ireland in 1834, she was the eldest of seven children and known fondly as ‘Mamie’.

Her vocational journey started at the young age of 19 when she travelled to Rathfarnham and was received

as a Novice in 1854. While still a Novice at just 22 years of age she became Mistress of the Day School at Rathfarnham and at 25 was appointed Mistress of Novices at Gorey.

In 1867 she was appointed Superior of Gorey and just five years later founded the Loreto Convent in Enniscorthy. Not long after establishing the Convent she was asked to lead a mission to Australia. It is believed Mother Gonzaga was chosen because of her experience and success in strong leadership roles and her charismatic personality – two characteristics which continue to be instilled in Loreto women today.

During her 40 years in Australia she founded 13 schools (including

kindergarten, primary and boarding schools), two teacher training colleges as well as taking over the running of at least seven parish schools.

Mother Gonzaga believed that what the world needed were wise, loveable and welleducated women.

She was a pioneer in creating a very broad curriculum that ensured an holistic education to bring the best out of her students so they could “make the world a better place for having lived in it”.

Her success didn’t come without its challenges as Mrs Scott commented, “she met huge financial difficulties and sometimes clerical obstruction to foundations and missions.

Physically, her deafness was a great burden to her as it

would have been isolating. But with characteristic positive outlook she always trusted that all would be as God intended.”

The strong foundation she and her Sisters laid continues to have a profound influence on hundreds of thousands of Loreto women educated since her arrival in 1875.

As we celebrate this great milestone, we give thanks for our Loreto Sisters, friends, colleagues, and particularly all who, through our Loreto schools, have continued to imbue a culture of justice in personal and social relations, authenticity in our words and actions and felicity in the joy of life.

efore returning to his heavenly Father, Jesus prepared his Apostles to go out and share the Good News of God’s love with the world.

Mark 6:7-13

J

esus sent his 12 apostles out in pairs to preach to the people and to cure the sick. He told them to take no money, no spare clothes and no food.

“If someone makes you welcome, then stay with them until your work is finished,” He said. “But if people are unfriendly and do not want to listen to your message, then walk away and leave them to themselves.”

The Apostles set off and did everything as Jesus had said. Many people turned back to God after hearing their words, and others were cured in Jesus’ name.

I

f you were going on a long journey, what sort of things would you want to pack? You might take: Clothes and shoes; Food and something to drink; Waterproof coat in case it rained; and Money for bus or train fares.

Jesus told his Apostles to take only the clothes they had on, with nothing extra except a stick in their hand to help them walk. They had no need of money or food or any of the extra baggage we would want to take with us on a journey!

The most important thing the Apostles carried was the message that Jesus had sent them with.

This was the Good News that He had brought to share with the world, to lead people back to God’s love and everlasting life. God would guide and look after the Apostles on their mission, taking care of all their needs.

The Apostles probably felt a mixture of excitement and fear as they set out on their journey. They did not know what sort of a welcome to expect from the people they preached to, or whether they would succeed in doing everything Jesus had asked them to do. They placed their trust in God to watch over and guide them.

Like the Apostles, we can share Christ’s message with the people we meet every day by making our thoughts, our words, and our actions like those of Jesus. By living as He taught us to and allowing the Holy Spirit to work through us, He can reach out and touch the lives of others, bringing them closer to God.
