SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY ARCHITECTURE IN MARS Interplanetary living is the next natural evolution for the human race. More than using traditional space technology for space exploration and colonization, the use of synthetic biology and advanced genetics may be the way humans will reach this evolutionary next step.

SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY FOR SPACE EXPLORATION

GENETICALLY ENHANCED WORLD Space architecture is a challenging field that deals with the limiting factors of extremely harmful conditions to humans (high radiation and micro-gravity). This design project approaches the topic, by introducing the science of synthetic bilogy paired with a fictional narrative to build a colony in Mars. The idea is that in this genetically advanced world, reengineered microorganisms synthetize existing Martian elements (such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, water, sun light and regolith) to produce habitats that can protect humans from harmful outer space conditions.

Children can learn about protection of the environment at a young age, so that it becomes their form of living, rather than a problem-solving aspect of their life.

A SUSTAINABLE PLACE TO PLAY AND LEARN The Children’s pavilion takes its form and spatial organization from two main elements. The first one has to do with the recognition of the existing conditions of the Site. Located in Spring river Point Park, on the banks of the Miami River, the site is part of a residential neighborhood that is privileged by the existing landscape of trees. When looked from an aerial view, the overlapping of tree canopies over the residential area, create the illusion of one single green space that includes the park and the residential area. The voids left by the landscape is one of the layers that create spaces to give form to the pavilion in plan. Another layer is the imaginary lines of the city grid.

The second element uses the special qualities of trees as inspiration to create a space that minimizes the gap between the adult and children’s scales. The adult scale operates in a space between our eyes and our hands, while the child scale operates in a space below that of the adult, closer to the ground level. While trees, are not at human scale we make them work. We use them for a variety of programs, such as play, rest, shade, and wine. Children climb on them, while all sort of organic creatures use them as habitat. The project uses the irregular but successful special conditions in a tree to constantly change ground levels so that the ground level of children is raised up closer to the adult; making playtime and learning time more enjoyable.

SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES

TEMPERATURE CONTROL AND SOLAR ENEERGY COLLECTION The 7” deep louvered South wall prevents even the winter lowest south sun angles from entering the room, while allowing views of the Miami river. The louvered wall is angled so that each panelcatch the solar rays.

The second skin is a double pane low-e, low SHGC glazing with a low U-Value. Each PV module is built-in the wooden roof structure. Roof tilted 15deg less than latitude maximize energy collection.

WATER MANAGEMENT The pavilion collects up to 49,000 gal of rain water thanks to its water collection system and design-integrated tank. In additi a small scale Bioremediation system treats gray waters, for reuse in toilets and lawn irrigation.

WIND Operable windows on the east and west of the conditioned room allow for natural ventilation at night time or when Miami’s temperatures are low. Wind devices protect the courtyard and the entrance when there is excesive wind.

CARACAS CULTURAL CENTER VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE IN CARACAS The goal of Centro Cultural Caracas is to become a place that can elevate the culture of the low-income population in the city of Caracas, Venezuela. The CCC leverages its vernacular architecture to entice low-income families to visit the center.

REFERENCING THE “BARRIOS” One of the largest informal settlements in Caracas, Venezuela is less than four miles away from the CCC site. The caotic organization of the slums, also know in Caracas as “barrios”, served as the inspiration for the project. Referencing the modular form of the “ranchos” (informal homes) and the experience of traveling through meandering roads and stairs, the CCC offers the habitants of the slums a familiarity that attracts them to visit the center. The CCC is an accesible space open to people from all levels.

The site for the Centro Cultural Caracas is located 800 feet above sea level, on the mountains of Caracas, Venezula in the neighborhood of La Castellana. Caracas informal settlements house about 20% of the city’s population. The project utilizes the site’s topography to create a series of levels on the inside and outside of the bulding. A serpentine-shaped ramp, that starts inside the main entrance lobby, takes visitors to the outdoor courtayd leading them to other programtic areas of the center. This meandering experience is similar to the paths exsiting in the barrios.

STRUCTURE FOR A SEISMIC ZONE Due to the seismic nature of the site, and the irregularity of the bulding’s geomtry, the CCC separates the structural elements of each irregular shape as a strategy to prevent sesimic horizontal loads to cause failure due to excessive stress . In other words, each irregular shape is a “separate bulding’ with its own structural system.

MATERIALITY: AN ARTISAN APPROACH Residents in the barrios of Caracas use construction bricks to build their homes but due to cost limitations they leave them unfinished. For structural purposes, they use an artisan method that consists of inserting perforated bricks, one at a time, into four steel rods to form a “column” of bricks. Later they fill the void with concrete to obtain the structural support. The CCC uses this basic concept as a construction methodology to create the patterns and openness of its walls. A system of steel rods and shelves create a solid structure that takes the loads from the bricks.

Each brick is customized to include a void underneath to fit the steel shelf wihtout being visible from the interior or exterior.

SCHOLARS RESIDENCES AND LIBRARY ADDITION Within the hectic pace of the city of Miami, lie the cloisters of a quiet and sacred ancient Monastery . It dates back to the 11th century, when it was originally built in Spain. This addition enhances the touristic and event-venue program of the cloisters by opening it to the public with a Library and scholars residences.

RESIDENCES AND LIBRARY

AN ADDIT I ON T O AN ANCI E NT S P A N I S H M O N A ST E R Y Few people know that in the heart of Miami there is an ancient Spanish Monastery. The original name was Monastery of St. Bernard de Clairvaux, and was built in the year 1133 AD in Sacramenia, Spain. William Randolph Hearst purchased the Cloisters in 1925. The monastery was dismantled, shipped to the United States and rebuilt in 1952.

This project is an addition of a Library and scholar residences to the cloisters of the Monastery. The library, the residences and the landscape an its outdoor walls protect the cloisters just like a jewelry box safeguards a precious jewel. The Library is a thin glass membrane that holds the program while is protected by thick exterior walls. Similarly to a spinal column, a wall separates two scholar residences, while a void on this same wall creates a common public central space maintaining both units connected.

WYNWOOD INFILL URBANISM Wynwood is a former industrial area that has become the new arts district in Miami.

Businesses in former warehouses and body shops, now offer entertaining, living and workspaces to a diverse population of locals and visitors.

By developing low-rise infill buildings that occupy the entire lot and providing a mixed use of retail/ commercial spaces along with living units, the street is re-purposed as a place of interaction and comunity engagement.

A BUILDING THAT CONNECTS WITH THE CITY AND LETS THE CITY IN The voids on the facade’s design ( one is a narrow and very tall void that leads to the flat units in the back and the other one creates a covered terrace) allow for a sense of epenness and engagement with the surrounding community. The front of the building includes mixed use space on the ground floor, and a duplex on the second floor. The back of the building houses two identical flat units, one on the ground floor and one on the second floor . The front street entrance leads to a small courtyard and to the entrance for the flats. Both flats enjoy views of the central courtyard. , while the duplex enjoys views of the city and the central promenade.
