ANNIE WILDEY

At the Water's Edge

At the Water’s Edge is an exhibition of new works by Annie Wildey that explores the mercurial nature of the coastal landscape. When the surf is up, or the fog looms, when the sunlight glistens on the ocean and clouds dance in a summer sky. Annie works freely and expressively capturing the beauty, energy and awe of an ever changing landscape.

Annie received a Bachelor of fine art from Kingston School of Art in the UK. After graduating she moved to the USA and was a long-time resident of New York city where she worked for many years at the British Consulate-General. Deciding on a career shift, she studied for an MFA at the New York Academy of Art where she was awarded a post graduate fellowship. She has received numerous awards and residencies and taught workshops with master printmaker Dan Welden in the New England area. At the beginning of 2020 Annie moved to Westerly and in partnership with Michael Fanelli they opened Air Studio Gallery in December 2022.

A painter first and printmaker second, Annie explores moments of beauty, wonder and awe in the coastal landscape. In the studio, she interprets the smells, sounds, feelings, and energy of the elements in her medium of choice. Her process is fluid, moving between freedom and control, as she pushes and pulls paint around to translate her emotional experience of a subject in motion.

In this new work, Annie brings us several new timeless seascape paintings, meditations of the rising and receding tides. Working with a muted almost monochromatic palette, and a gestural stroke, that celebrates the accidental mark, we are still able to feel the power and grace of her subject in a poetic and meaningful way.

Annie has exhibited both nationally and internationally. Commercial galleries and venues which include: The National Museum of China: The Mall Galleries, London, UK; The Heckscher Museum, NY, Southampton Art Center, NY and The University of Connecticut.
