Terry Elkins Paintings Past and Present August 27 – September 18 4 North Main Street, Southampton, NY 11968 www.mmfineart.com

Working professionally since the late 1970’s, the Bridgehampton artist credits thirty five years of living on the East End with profoundly influencing his work. Having studied in Texas where his work leaned towards the abstract, Elkins eventually relocated to the Hamptons. “I discovered the area where I had settled was a light filled landscape surrounded by ocean and bays. I started to paint outside, in the tradition of plein air. My work began to reflect the light, landscape, the coastline, architecture and other images found in the littoral zone.”

. This solo exhibition will be on view August 27 through September 18, with an opening reception Saturday August 27, 6 to 8 pm. The show will span the last 33 years of the artist’s career including both recent works and special highlights from earlier periods, including the 1995 stunning 21-foot-long oil painting Peter’s Pond, which has only been shown in a gallery setting once before. Today Elkins’ oil paintings, pastels, drawings and watercolors cover a range of subjects from landscapes and seascapes to maritime and nautical images and historic architectural landmarks. His intimate knowledge of the East End transforms ordinary landscapes into something deeply meditative and intensely personal. The artist finds himself frequently revisiting familiar locations demonstrating a deep connection to the area. “I keep going back to the places where I’ve painted before, working there again, developing ideas and techniques that I was unable to do five or ten years earlier.”

Elkins received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Sam Houston State University in 1975 and his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Houston in 1978. His works have been exhibited throughout the Unites States and abroad. He has received two Pollock-Krasner Foundations Awards and has been an artist in residence for the Frederic Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg, NY and the Nature Conservancy at the Andy Warhol Preserve in Montauk, NY. He has taught classes in Plein Air painting for the Parrish Art Museum of Southampton, NY.
