New girls’ boarding facilities at Cathedral

The Building Program I am very pleased to report that the extensive building program we embarked on in July last year is finally coming to an end. There has been significant disruption to many areas of the school, and I know that staff, students and parents will be pleased to be able to use our new facilities. There is no doubt that the work we have done in the Junior School and in Girls’ Boarding was an important step in bringing our school buildings and their surrounds in line with the high standards we expect from our staff and students on a day to day basis. The building program would not be possible without the expertise, hard work and patience of a large number of people and I would particularly like to thank the building contractors, the School Board, and the staff of the school for their ongoing support. School families have also been very patient and it is great to see our students using and enjoying the new buildings, classrooms, playgrounds and walkways.

Principal

I am really looking forward to showing our new Sister Frances building to the Old Girls that attend our tours on the Reunion Weekend. I am sure they will be envious of the accommodation that our current senior female boarders have moved into.

F

The next stage of the Junior School upgrade will involve a major upgrade of the car park area and drop off zone. This project is due for completion on Foundation Day and will allow for a far more orderly “drop off and pick up “of Junior School students.

PR O

O

The other building news I am pleased to share with the School Community, is that Phase One of the Rock Centre Redevelopment has been given the green light to go ahead next year. This project will see the Rock Centre enclosed, internally lined and enlarged, to make it a significantly more valuable teaching area as well as a space we can use for whole school events. The current Rock Centre was erected in 1993 after a generous donation was received from the Rock family. The School Principal of the time, Mr Bill Toppin, commented that the multi-purpose hall was designed so that it could be enclosed one day, and that day will come in 2012. It has served a multitude of purposes over the years, ranging from an undercover basketball court, a whole school assembly area, the location for spectacular House Musical events, and a home for several generations of pigeon families. Its development will mark a new beginning for this part of the school and I am sure that the new Rock Centre will be an outstanding facility.

School Land The school has been successful in its bid to acquire a very significant piece of land adjacent to the school grounds on Thompson Street. The one acre block behind the tennis courts has been a target of the School Board for some time and they feel that it will provide us with a range of options as part of the School Site Master Plan. Mother’s

M o nth o f May

During May The Cathedral School’s Early Learning Centre celebrated “Mother’s Month of May” in a dedication to all the hard work our mothers and grandmothers do for us. Mothers and Grandmothers were invited into the rooms to spend some time with their children or grandchildren in a class environment. Some of the activities the children participated in throughout the month included: • Flower arranging with Stevee’s grandmother • Still life painting with Maya’s mum • Reading with Lachlan’s mum • Lunch with Samuel’s mum • Learning what a hairdresser does with Kody’s mum

F

To finish off the month, we all celebrated with a Cancer Council’s Biggest Breakfast fundraiser, raising over $100 for this great cause. Thank you to everyone who participated in our “Mother’s Month of May” celebration.

This year’s Junior School musical “Kids at Sea” was a huge success with three sell out performances. 85 students from Years 3 - 6 dazzled the audience with their singing, dancing and acting talents to tell the story of Sinbad and his father’s quest to search for the family jewels. Students worked tirelessly throughout Terms 1 and 2 learning lines, dance choreography and songs to put on an amazing show. Thank you to all the staff and parents who assisted with this musical to ensure it was a huge success. We look forward to the next Junior School musical in 2013. Mr Paul Taylor Head of Junior School

As the second term commenced, excitement was at its peak as the keys for the recently renovated and extended girls’ boarding complex, known as Sister Frances, were handed over to the school. The girls from Years 10, 11 and 12, who will be residing in this complex, waited anxiously over the Easter break for news on their new dormitory’s progress. Having previously been spread over different parts of the school during the construction phase, the anticipation for our new dormitory and being reunited with friends again was overwhelming. Delays in the dormitory’s progress occurred throughout the construction of the building, each out of the control of the builders and the school. These included the recent natural disasters that could not have been foreseen. As the renovation of the complex had just begun to proceed smoothly, major flooding had hit Central and South East Queensland meaning materials, in particular the windows for the building that were to be transported from Brisbane, could not get through on the roads. In addition, the start of 2011 also brought with it Cyclone Yasi which also severely affected the construction time.

When theTerm 2 travel day for all boarders arrived, excitement was in overload and the girls were saying “hello” to state of the art facilities, and their very own room. Each of us was amazed by the difference including the newly painted walls in bright, modern colours, brand new furniture and accessories and of course the elevator! On each of the three floors there were girls buzzing about their rooms as they unpacked. 4

THE CONNECTION

The renovation of Sister Frances has also included the addition of accommodation for the Head of Residence, Rayna Page and four dormitory supervisors. The building also extends to join with the younger girls’ boarding complex known as Kardinia. The extension has created a main reception office, meeting rooms and enables the two dormitories to be united as one. On behalf of the girl boarders, I would like to say a tremendous thank you to the builder Mike Dickson from MBD Constructions, architect David Butcher from Ralph Patterson Architects and all other major contractors for their hard work on a very successful project. Secondly, I would like to thank our Principal Mr Ian Gamack, Business Manager, Mrs Kathy Romano and the School Board for the organisation and effort that has been put into the creation of the new facilities. Finally, I would like to thank the Director of Boarding, Mr Jock Walker-Campbell and all the boarding staff for their cooperation and help leading up to the opening of our new dormitory as well as all the staff and students who were relocated because of the building project. Thank you all very much. We appreciate it a lot and love our new rooms! Emma Josselyn Year 12 Boarding Student

Senior Geography Tour During the Easter holidays, 21 Senior School students and three very enthusiastic teachers, completed The Cathedral School’s inaugural Geography Tour travelling to Hong Kong and Beijing for 10 days. For the majority of the students, this trip was their first experience overseas. The tour was planned to reinforce the geographical concepts and topics studied in the Senior Geography course at Cathedral. Departing from Cairns International Airport, the tour travelled to Hong Kong for the first three nights. In this densely-populated city of eight million residents, students experienced significant culture shock, taking note of the crowds and foreign food, as well as the multitudes of towering apartment buildings, the bartering culture, the efficient public transport network and the significant contrast between emerging technology and traditional Hong Kong. Other highlights included great markets, the famous laser show, a day trip to Ocean Park and a certain collection of (fake) Rolexes.

Emily Gates Year 12 Student

PR O

O

For the students, the 10 day trip was an opportunity to appreciate the lessons of many Geography classes firsthand, which left everyone with irreplaceable memories and experiences. Special thanks to Mr Galletly, Mrs Townson and Mrs Newman for all their dedication and organisation towards the Geography Tour.

F

After a few jam-packed days, it was off to Beijing. In comparison to Hong Kong, the students found that Beijing was considerably more traditional, a belief reinforced with visits to the Forbidden City, Summer Palace and the Great Wall of China. The group experienced the traditional Beijing Hutong communities, as well as local cuisine, a chance to learn some cooking skills and the Silk Market for some exceptional shopping. In keeping with the theme of connecting people and places, an essential part of the trip was the Beijing subway. While a few mishaps occurred, most notably a small group of students failing to enter the crowded train during peak hour and being left on the platform, the encounter was worthwhile for the skills acquired.

Staff Profile

Jenny Ullmann

Catering/Hire/Tuckshop Coordinator Jenny has worked at The Cathedral School for quite some time and those who have boarded at the school over the years will probably remember her smiley face. During her time she has worked in a variety of positions starting as a Kitchen Hand and working her way up to be in the position she is in today - Catering/ Hire/Tuckshop Coordinator.

How long have you been a staff member at Cathedral? 26 years – times flies when you are having fun! What’s a typical day like in the Cathedral boarding kitchen? There is never a dull moment in the kitchen! Seven days a week during the school term the cooks and kitchen crew are busily preparing and cooking four meals a day for 150 boarding students. When you add it up that’s just over 4,000 meals they put together each week!

Every day is busy for Jenny but at the time of writing this profile it had been a particularly hectic day as her 9th Grandchild had just been born.

What do you like most about working at Cathedral? I really enjoy the interaction with the boarding students and all the staff. We always have a lot of fun!

Jenny enjoys spending her spare time with her family and collecting teddy bears of which she has 600. She also likes scrapbooking, sewing and gardening.

What is your favourite food? You can’t go past a good old homemade lasagne. JUNE 2011

Year 9 Outdoor Education an experience never to be forgotten! Year 9 camp, what a blast! Who could ever forget the nine days of kayaking in the freezing cold, sitting around the campfire telling ghost stories or the latest gossip, group cooking Mac and Cheese and then the pot falling into the sand and the overall friendships made. We all enjoyed our time at camp, singing songs to the radio on our way to the drop off points, the countless times we sang “99 bottles of beers on the wall”, hiking through the gorge and the mornings spent making hats out of cereal boxes for those who had lost theirs. Some days were wet, overcast and just plain yuck, others it was gorgeous with blue skies over the gorge with the sun shining on our necks. We all had a great time on camp; the survivor night was the main highlight. You would never think that spotting the powerlines to find our camp was a huge achievement but it was! As was seeing some form of human life other than our own.

Staff Profile Paul Taylor

Head of Junior School

Ever since I was six years old, I always wanted to be a teacher. I don’t know exactly what it was that drew me to this profession; however, over the past 18 years, I have enjoyed working with a large number of children and parents and making a difference in their lives. For me, the joy comes from working alongside others to solve problems, further develop concepts and have fun. I have been very lucky throughout my career to join my two biggest passions - teaching and travel. After graduating from university, I moved to the UK, where I started teaching in a range of London schools. It was here I learnt the true meaning of “behaviour management”. I was also lucky enough to meet Di whom I married soon after returning to Australia. After working in both the State system and the Independent system on the Gold Coast, I packed up Di and our girls, Ashlyn and Candice, and headed off to China where we lived and worked for three years at an American International School. This was certainly one of our most enjoyable times as a family and we are extremely grateful for the opportunities we had while living overseas. It is hard to believe that we have now been in Townsville for four years and I am very proud of the changes we have seen in the Junior School due to the hard work of all staff and the commitment of our families. The future is looking very bright!

Mr Paul Taylor with the 2011 Semester 1 Junior School Leaders, Ashlyn Taylor and William Stewart.

How long have you been a staff member at Cathedral? Four years this July.

If you weren’t the Head of Junior School at Cathedral where do you think you would be?

I think I would still be living overseas, possibly in China or somewhere else in Asia. I often wonder what I would do if I was not in education and to be honest, I cannot think of anything I would rather do!

What do you like most about The Cathedral School?

There are so many things I love about this school. I love the sense of community and the opportunities both staff and students have at the school. While there are challenges in my job (as there are in any job!), I like the fact that I still enjoy coming to work each day, primarily due to the staff and students that I have the privilege to work with. Making a difference to people is a great thing and something that I hope I can do well.

What was your favourite subject at school?

PE......only joking! I have to say I was a huge fan of Modern History and of course, Music and Drama. JUNE 2011

Year 11 Work Experience Week Each year, the Year 11 cohort spends a week sampling their first preference of career choice through a week of Work Experience. The benefit of this week for the students is immeasurable. As always, the variety of placements is quite amazing with the most popular choices being engineering, medical/science, physiotherapy and aviation. Cathedral also has many students who aspire to work using their humanities-based skills. Three students were also fortunate to obtain placements with the Townsville Bulletin - Tessa Clarkson and Zac Chilcott in paper layout and journalism, and Felicity Doyle in photography. This week of work experience not only makes school relevant within the real world of work, it spurs the students to work even harder on their return to the term and energised to work towards their career goals. Here are some of the comments on the week’s placements by the students: Remy Atkinson - Out of the Blue Events ‘I spent time both on site and in the office. It was great to see both sides of the business. I have been offered part-time work and will also go to a conference next Wednesday with the staff in the evening. It’s exciting!’ Sara Alexander – Physionorth ‘It was really enjoyable. I learnt an awful lot about the body and how patients are treated.’

F

William Smith - AECOM Engineering ‘I got to see how engineering works in all different areas. I also learnt how the drawings I do in graphics are used in the work place.’

O

Greg Horscroft - Dr Rod Motyer - Heart Surgeon ‘It was really different to anything I have ever done. I felt very comfortable in the industry and it made me realise I do definitely want to study medicine, even though everyone keeps telling me it’s a long, hard slog. I’m glad the school does work experience, it was a very special experience.’

PR O

Suzanne Rooke - Palm’s Vet Clinic,Wulguru ‘I loved it. I enjoyed helping and observing what happens in the clinic and the way the vet nurses cared for the animals. The vets are amazing, very professional.’ Juanita Whaleboat – PriceWaterhouseCoopers ‘It was really interesting. I was involved with tax returns, stock take and I visited a real Audit of three big companies. I saw everything in accounting and particularly enjoyed learning about tax and was amazed by the personal care shown to clients.’ Connor Dales - ADF Military Police ‘It was great, because I saw what the military police do and how they work in the environment. The staff have lots of benefits and are such a great bunch of guys, so friendly.’ Stephanie Prizeman - PE teacher, Annandale State School ‘It was fun and made me realise I need to work really hard to be able to get into the teaching course I would like to study at UQ after school. I would like to do that and combine it with my swimming goals.’ Jason Sondergeld - WestWing Aviation ‘The flying was great. We were allowed to sit up the front, the pilots and staff were really helpful; answering all sorts of questions on career pathways to Aviation. ‘ These are just a few of the student comments. I have been blown away by the professionalism of our students in the work place and would like to thank all employers for taking our students into their businesses for the week. WOW where has the year gone? It’s almost that time of year for the graduating Class of 2011 to become our newest intake of past students. However, before we get too far ahead of ourselves we have plenty of events and activities to get through before the end of the year including the annual Reunion Dinner on 23 July. Each year at the dinner, we have groups of school mates from various years catching up, sharing stories and photos and reuniting those old friendships that went missing over the years. I know I did just that last year as our class celebrated our 30th Reunion. We all made a whole weekend of it, sharing many stories and of course plenty of laughs. Now, almost a year later we have kept in contact, sending each other messages and chatting on Facebook. So if you haven’t already sent in your RSVP slip to join us for a fun-filled evening you’ll find it on the back page of this newsletter.

We always love to hear from Past Students, some have contacted us recently with some lovely memorabilia about the old school and times

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their wishes and prayers when my son, Kyle had an accident at work in Western Australia last month. Kyle is recovering well and will need further surgery but he has been moved from hospital to a rehabilitation facility, where they are very happy with his progress. I talk to him every day and Kyle has asked me to thank his classmates for sending their best wishes. Thank you from all of us. Dalvern Thom (1959)

Dalvern Thom was a brilliant student during her time at St Anne’s. She won the Halse Medal, given by Archbishop Halse, for the top Scholarship pass from a student at an Anglican School, in the first year it was offered - 1955.

Jason Sondergeld at West Wing Aviation, Cairns

Dalvern, who was multi-talented, finished at the school in 1959 and left Townsville. She went on to train at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney. Following on from this Dalvern spent 10 years performing in theatre; including mainly stage work but with some television and film on the side before moving on to teaching classical ballet, which still remains her greatest love today.

2012 marks a special era in our school The Cathedral School has undergone many changes since it was founded in 1917. St Anne’s started as an all girls’ boarding school and many significant events have followed. History might not be everyone’s favourite subject but when it comes to researching into the history of something you are passionate about it’s easy to lose yourself in another world. The Past Students’ Association is currently researching about the school’s evacuation to Ravenswood during World War II (1942), which is located about a two hours drive west from Townsville. In the April edition of the Connection I put a call out to anyone who had any information on this huge milestone in the school’s history and would like to thank everyone who has contributed information.Your memories and input into the history of the school has been an important part of our planning.

F

The Past Students’ Association is looking to hold a major event in 2012 which will mark 70 years since the school was evacuated to Ravenswood. Between now and then we will be busy collecting information and we will also be travelling out to Ravenswood later in the year to look at potential sites to put up recognition plaques and to find a suitable venue to have a special function to symbolise time spent there.

The evacuation to Ravenswood was a very important event in our school’s history. By capturing it now, and recording it for future, students of The Cathedral School of St Annes & St James are able to appreciate the history that shapes the school of today.

Three generations at Cathedral When 5 year-old Grace O’Brien stepped into the Prep classroom at The Cathedral School recently, she was following in the footsteps of two preceding generations of her family. But this fact was probably lost on Grace – she was just excited to be going to school in a real classroom with other children.

Grace’s Prep teacher, Mrs Mary Slack-Smith, said that Grace settled easily into the class and quickly immersed herself in the activities with the other children during her three weeks at the school. Grace has now joined the Cathedral family, and we look forward to seeing her return in future years.

F

Grace started Prep this year by Distance Education through Charters Towers SDE. Her family live on a cattle property west of Charters Towers and this is the only avenue of school available to her. When the family came down to Townsville for a few weeks to await the birth of their third child, they asked if Grace could attend Prep classes for a few weeks at her mother’s old school.

Grace’s mother, Lynda O’Brien (nee Johnson) attended The Cathedral School for 6 years, and was a Prefect and Bede House Captain in 1994. Her mother, Jillaine Johnson (nee Carr) was a boarding student at St Anne’s, and was also a Prefect and Bede House Captain in her senior year - 1970. Sadly, Jillaine succumbed to cancer while her three daughters were still at school. But Lynda is sure she would be proud to see her first granddaughter back at their old school.

Past Student Profile Ashley Baxter (2007) Ashley Baxter from the Class of 2007 knows The Cathedral School very well after spending all of his school years here. When Ashley was asked what his stand-out memories were from his many years at Cathedral he replied “Outdoor Education! All the camps were brilliant from spending a couple nights in Ravenswood hearing ghost stories to kayaking down the beautiful Burdekin River.” His other memories include Mr Monypenny’s Maths classes, Tutor group with Ms Mahoney and the various musicals he participated in. Since finishing school Ashley has commenced studying a Bachelor of Education (secondary) at James Cook University. Ashley is looking forward to finishing his study soon and becoming a Chemistry teacher. When Ashley isn’t busy studying he really enjoys working his two jobs, one as Maths Tutor for Indigenous students at William Ross State High School and the other as a Percussion Instrumental Tutor back at his favourite school – Cathedral. In his spare time, Ashley really enjoys playing music with the Townsville Brass Band “The band has given me tremendous opportunities which have included travelling to four national championships around Australia,” said Ashley.
