THE NEWSLETTER OF THE CATHEDRAL SCHOOL OF ST ANNE AND ST JAMES H SEPTEMBER 2011 H NUMBER 46

Principal ’s Report As I walk around the school at the end of a very eventful and action packed term, it feels quite unusual that there are no workers, vehicles or construction fences hampering my progress or cluttering our magnificent grounds. The major building program that the school embarked on five years ago has reached a temporary lull, and we have a window of time where we can sit back and enjoy the fruits of our planning and commitment to upgrading The Cathedral School’s buildings and grounds. For those who have not been at the school for some time, the work that has been done over the past 18 months includes; a 72 student Pre-Prep Centre; the major upgrade of the Sister Frances Boarding House; the upgrade of our three Prep classrooms; the conversion of our old Junior School Information Resource Centre into three classrooms and Junior School staffroom; the upgrade of the Junior School Administration; the addition of new roadways, pathways and drainage; the re-levelling of the Junior School oval; and the realignment and extension of the Junior School car park. It has been an incredible effort from all involved and a true indication of the willingness of the Cathedral community to do what is necessary for the benefit of our school. The remarks from students, staff and parents about the new buildings and facilities are overwhelmingly positive. The building program has also met the goal of desired functionality with all areas operating very smoothly. The (re)opening of the Sister Frances Boarding House on Foundation Day this year by 1976 School Captain Sonja Bernhardt was a memorable event enjoyed by all present.

I would again like to extend an invitation to all of our former students and staff to visit the school to walk around the campus. This opportunity presents itself at the Reunion Weekend and our Open Days, but if you are in Townsville and would like to drop in to the School, we are more than happy to show you around any time. Our past students and staff from St Anne’s and The Cathedral School are always welcome on campus. Past Students will also be pleased to hear that the levelling and returfing of the space in front of Heatley House will be completed over the next few weeks to make an area that will be known as the Past Students’ Association Lawn. This project is being funded by the Past Students’ Association and will be an excellent area for future functions and events. Mr Ian Gamack Principal

Book Week 2011

Our annual Story-book Character Parade was again a huge success. This year’s favourites included Robin Hood, Paddington Bear, Little Blossom, Thor, most of Hogwart’s pupils and teachers and plenty of characters from the fairy tales. Even the staff came on board with their version of “Who Sank the Boat” and other popular characters. The Children’s Book Council of Australia awards were announced and the winning and honour books for each category put on display in the Junior School Library along with the creative activities children completed during the week. The Library Monitors and aides came as the honour book by Bronwyn Bancroft; “I Love Australia” with costumes of reef, ocean, desert , bush and beach as well as favourite foods like Tim Tams, Twisties, Vegemite, ANZAC biscuits and lamingtons.

Only the finest works of Art on display at Cathedral’s ELC On the night of 29 July more than 70 families attended the Early Learning Centre’s annual art show where mini Picasso’s and Van Gogh’s were able to showcase their most creative work. Every child had two pieces of artwork on display and parents were able to purchase them with a gold coin donation. $1,200 was raised through the sale of the artwork and was used to buy new learning and play equipment for the centre. Everyone who attended enjoyed a wonderful night of stunning artwork, face painting and singing and dancing to the band Cranky Pants. Thank you to all of the families for your support. THE CONNECTION

A long-standing staff member of almost 30 years, Mr John Rauch is still as passionate about The Cathedral School and Sport as he was when he started. He is married to Debbie, who is also a teacher and the Dean of Year 9 Students at Cathedral and has three children, Samantha, 18, Katie, 16 and Matthew, 12. John said his main interest is of course sport and when not spending time with his family, he spends most of his spare time at various school and club sporting events. He also really enjoys planning the next “tour”, the biennial Rugby Union and Netball UK tour in the September school holidays. How long have you been a staff member at The Cathedral School? I have been a staff member at Cathedral since coming to Townsville for a year or two in 1983. What is the best part about your job? The best part of my job is looking forward to the next day at school. The students always perform to the best of their ability at sporting events and have a great deal of pride in the school. Their attitude makes it a pleasure to take them to carnivals in Townsville and away to competitions in Queensland and overseas.

THE CONNECTION

If you weren’t a teacher, what do you think you would be? I would probably be involved in some sort of sports administration if I wasn’t a teacher. What do you like the most about The Cathedral School? I like everything about The Cathedral School from the range of activities and opportunities students are given, the effort and enjoyment they put into and get out of such opportunities, the camaraderie of the staff and the support of families involved in the school. What was your favourite subject at school? My favourite subject at school was Physical Education closely followed by Maths and English.

Cathedral’s Japanese program uses iPads to promote Asian

languages

Middle School students studying Japanese as a subject will soon have access to Apple iPads in the classroom to assist with learning the language. The Cathedral School is among a select group of schools to be granted funding to promote languages other than English within the classroom and school community from Independent Schools Queensland. The aim of the project is to introduce the innovative technology that the iPad offers into the Japanese classroom to motivate and encourage students to continue studying the language throughout their senior years of schooling. The Cathedral School Japanese Teacher, Mrs Mary Jorgensen, said, “Japanese is taught from Year 4 through to Year 12 at Cathedral; however, after Year 8 it becomes an elective subject.Through introducing the iPads into the classroom, it is hoped to improve the delivery of the subject, igniting students’ interest in the Japanese language and its culture, therefore motivating them to continue studying the subject through to Year 12.” “The students are currently using iPods in the classroom to help with revision of vocabulary and learning script; however, these devices are designed for individual use only. The iPads will be able to be used in group work and whole class activities which are much more interactive” added Mrs Jorgensen. The iPad program will be used in all Year 7 and Year 8 Japanese classes and will be expanded to include all other year levels in the future.

Not only can we claim this one as a Staff Profile but also as a Past Student Profile. Rayna graduated from The Cathedral School as a boarding student in 1992 and now returns 19 years later to her old stomping ground to hold the reins as Head of Residence for Girls’ Boarding. Rayna has said that boarding life has certainly changed over the years. There are lots of physical changes but also boarding life is much more relaxed than it was when she was at school. She also made mention of the fact that the Senior Girls are very lucky to have their own individual rooms with doors! What years were you a student of the school yourself? I was a boarder here at Cathedral from 1988 to 1992, my high school years. What is your greatest memory of your time at school? A mixed bag; the grounds, the people, pride at achievements completed here at school and experiences in boarding. What do you like most about The Cathedral School? The sense of community!!!

staff profile Ms Rayna Page Head of Residence, Girls’ Boarding

What was your favourite subject at school? Biology and Year 10 History What is a typical day like in girls boarding? It is one of routine and chaos! Due to communal living we function on routines but the individuals create positive (mostly) chaos! It starts at 7am with wake up and then flexi breakfast, off to school, head check after school then the girls scatter to a variety of activities. Dinner is at 6pm and study starts at 6.40pm for all grades. Later there is a break where noise and energy rein supreme, then a variety of bedding times. THE CONNECTION

Year 10

Community Service Week

Earlier this term students in Year 10 spent a week out of their normal school schedule helping in the local community as a part of their Christian Education course. The aim of the “Serving our Community Program” is for students to serve – to help others without financial reward or career advancement. For the week, students were assigned to a wide variety of community agencies that provide support to those in need. Some were at Meals on Wheels, starting at 4.30am to work in the kitchen and then delivering meals for the day; others were at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home, spending time with the residents and joining in with their activities; whilst other students provided helping hands at thrift shops, child care services and the RSPCA. The Cathedral School Chaplain, Father Tim Adkins said the program extends deeply into the ethos of the school and the students learn a great deal from their time serving the community. “They learn that it is more blessed to give than it is to receive. When they go to serve others, they find a great deal of satisfaction, which is rarely found when it is sought for itself.” The “Serving our Community Program” is a long standing tradition of The Cathedral School and has been conducted with Year 10 students for almost 20 years.

Serving

our

community During the June/July school holiday break, seven current students (Emma Josselyn, Alex McDonald, Aaron Wilson, Gabriel Brennan, Harry Smith, Bradley Stevens and Ryan Griffin), one past student (Josh Pollock, 2010), Mrs Katrina Wilshire (Rowing Program Coordinator) and Mr Stephan Muhlenberg (Head Rowing Coach) set off on a three week adventure to Europe and the UK to compete in some of the biggest and well-known rowing regattas including the Henley Royal Regatta and Reading Town Regatta. Whilst luck wasn’t on their side during the Henley Royal Regatta, the Reading Town Regatta was a fabulous experience. The crew made it to many finals and raced against some very experienced crews from the UK, USA and Australia. Alexandria McDonald and Emma Josselyn bathed in the spotlight for the day with their impressive win in the U19 Woman’s Double, beating two University crews in the final! After the UK the group set off for Germany where they were able to visit the German Rowing Institute which was Stephan’s old rowing club.

The tour was a once in a lifetime experience for the students and they loved every moment of it.

Present at ion Ball

This year’s Presentation Ball was held on Saturday 30 July at Jupiter’s Hotel and Casino. The ball has become a signature event in the Cathedral calendar and this year we had 23 couples who were presented to our guest of honour, the Bishop of North Queensland – Bishop Bill Ray. Three hundred people attended the ball with some parents and guests travelling from as afield as Georgetown, Brisbane, and even interstate. Mrs Diana Gamack was the Matron of Honour and the student biographies were read on the night by the Head of Senior School, Mrs Diane Brisbane. The tables in the ballroom were beautifully decorated by Ms Jill Turner. Ms Turner also organised the girls’ wrist corsages and boys’ buttonholes in the theme of ‘spring flowers’. For the first time this year the dessert was made by the students – cupcakes! The Year 11 Hospitality class, under the guidance of Mrs Karen Hagen, made and iced over 300 cakes that were arranged on tiered plates as the centerpiece on each table. Each cake had a fondant flower on top made for us by Mrs Merle Holman and Mrs Loyce Turner.

As always, the highlight of the evening was the dances that the presentation couples performed. The students had been working for quite a few weeks at ‘Dancensations’ Studio in Kirwan to perfect the Presentation Dance, the progressive barn dance, the progressive jive and the cha cha cha. The Presentation Dance is choreographed each year by Melissa and Rohan Prince from ‘Dancensations’ and it is always spectacular to watch on the night. Because the dance floor is quite small, the guests get to watch it twice! The thank you speeches were eloquently delivered on the night by Iain Simpson, Naomi Kelly, Edward Osborne and Juanita Whaleboat. The Presentation Ball at The Cathedral School is a rite of passage event for our students as they move from adolescence to early adulthood. Congratulations to those students who were presented and a thank you to those who assisted in making the night so successful, especially Mrs Karen van Lieshout. Mrs Judy Newman Deputy Principal – Academic Dean

Cathedral switches on the National Broadband Network On Thursday 1 September The Cathedral School hosted a very dramatic launch of the National Broad Network (NBN) with Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer Wayne Swan pushing the “button” with six of our school leaders, Myckenzy Carr (Year 6), Nazareth Whaleboat (Year 9), Alexandra Kanowski (Year 12), Samuel Hoare (Year 12),Toby Sen Gupta (Year 9) and Bona ObiriYeboah (Year 6). It was a very memorable event for the school with many of our special guests commenting on the enthusiasm of our students and the spectacular rain trees that adorn our grounds. We are very fortunate to be one of only a handful of schools across Australia connected to the NBN and the staff and students are very excited about the opportunities it will bring. THE CONNECTION

President’s Report To the past students of St Anne’s and The Cathedral School and the current families, it gives me great pleasure to introduce myself at the 2011-12 President of the Past Students’ Association. The Cathedral School holds great memories for me; it stared here in Year 5 in the year 2000 and I graduated in the Class of 2007. I attended my first school reunion this year which was a great experience. On the Friday evening was the five year reunion (Class of 2006). It was a small group of past students but it was an evening full of memories of their days back at The Cathedral School. On the Saturday afternoon all the past students were guided by Mr Ian Gamack and Mrs Toni Lanphier on a tour of the school and its major changes. It was amazing to hear the reminiscing of the old days, and I was trying to imagine how the school looked 50 years ago. All the past students were very impressed with how the school had changed. The Past Students’ Association also held its Annual General Meeting and the new Committee was elected. The Cathedral School Past Students’ Association held their annual reunion on the Saturday night, where old friends reconnected and new friendships were made. It was such a lovely night held in the school’s dining hall. We heard from Sonja Bernhardt and our two PSA scholarship holders, Jacinta Conroy and Stuart Hubbert. I have many fond memories of the school and it was not until I left that I appreciated what was given to me in the way of friendship and the values that the school taught me. During school I was doing my school based apprenticeship to become a chef which I completed at the Holiday Inn. I was then offered an experience of a life time and it was to come back to The Cathedral School and work on the Outdoor Education program. I got to relive the camps in a different way, as a staff member. It was great working back for the school and chatting with many of my old teachers. Then at the start of this year I was offered a job in the Dining Hall as the relief cook and kitchen-hand. I now also work with the boarders as a weekend boarding supervisor. The Cathedral School has such a family feeling and that’s what makes it a great school.

I am also heavily involved in the community service organization of Lions International and its youth program, Leos. The Cathedral School started this passion when I was inducted as a Leo. I have progressed to the Twin Cities Leo Club and have also joined Lions. This year, I have been awarded the international Leo of the Year which was a huge achievement for me. Giving to the community is my passion and now I am giving back to the school community after many years of great memories and experiences that have shaped me as a person. I was very privileged to be asked last year to be a part of the Past Students’ Association and was elected as the Vice-President. I would like to thank Sandra for her work over the years and for showing me the way. Sandra is going to remain on the committee as the Immediate Past President. The newly elected committee for 2011/2012 is as follows: President – Tom Porter Vice President – Johanna Richardson Secretary – Renita Baker Treasurer – Val Carson Immediate Past President – Sandra Hubert Committee members – Mary Gallagher,Yvonne Melville and Ben Doyle This year I am looking forward to taking the Past Students’ Association to the next level and working with the school. Past Student Profiles Ben Doyle (2006) Newly elected Past Students’ Association committee member Ben Doyle from the Class of 2006 certainly has been busy since finishing school five years ago. The proud Langton House student has many stand-out memories from his time at Cathedral including Year 10 Outdoor Education on the South Passage, Rugby with JR, being involved with the school musical “Footloose” and class shenanigans with Mr David Cliffe and Mr Cameron Triffett…just to name a few. Following on from school, Ben commenced University completing a Bachelor of Commerce at James Cook University in 2010. Upon completion Ben started work with BHP Billiton in the Corporate Finance department. Ben has also travelled all around Australia living in Perth, Tasmania, Brisbane and Melbourne. Now back in Townsville, Ben is looking for a career change and set the goal of becoming a Fire Fighter. He is currently undergoing all the entrance exams. In his spare time, Ben likes to compete in charity bike rides as well as volunteering for the SES and Rural Fire Service, hence the goal of making a career out of it.

Claudine Butterworth (nee Fraser-Wilson) (1961) This year Claudine returned to Townsville for The Cathedral School’s annual Reunion Weekend celebration. This was her first time back since January 1960. Claudine’s parents moved from Adelaide to Queensland in 1954 when her father was transferred for work. They spent the first nine months in Brisbane and during that time Claudine was a boarder at St Hilda’s at Southport. Her parents then settled in Townsville and decided to transfer Claudine to a school closer to them. From here began Claudine’s very happy association with St Anne’s. Claudine’s father was then transferred back to Adelaide in January 1960 so sadly she wasn’t there to graduate in 1961 and finished her education in Adelaide. Claudine’s parents also had quite an association with the school. Her mother Evelyn Fraser-Wilson taught at St Anne’s for three years. She was a professional pianist and had been a primary school teacher in Adelaide before the family moved to Queensland. Evelyn became a great friend of Sister Lois who soon recognised her talents and invited her to join the staff. Claudine’s father worked with Jack Parker, Dr Breinl, Brigadier Bill Wearne and many others on the school committee/council that moved St Anne’s from the city of Townsville out to the new site at Mundingburra. On many occasions Claudine’s parents would take all the boarders who had not been invited anywhere and were left at school on a ‘Free Weekend’ out for the day. Claudine remembers her mother packing huge picnic lunches and they would all head off to Magnetic Island or have a barbecue at home. Claudine told us that when her classmate Genny Ensor contacted her 18 months ago, encouraging her to consider coming back for this year’s reunion she had since spent many hours recalling how much she enjoyed her time at the school, remembering the friendships she had made and the tremendous foundation the school gave her both academically and spiritually.

In Memoriam Margaret Olley 26 August 2011

Margaret is arguably Cathedral’s (St Anne’s) most famous past student. Margaret was at the school for a short period of time during the 1920s when her father was working around Tully. In 2006 her biographer Margaret French spent a couple of days at the school going through our archives looking for entries about her time at the school, which were found. Cathedral teacher Mrs Mary Mahoney did all this work and she and the school are acknowledged for their efforts in the finished biography which we have copies of here in the Senior School library. A portrait of her won this year’s Archibald Prize, as did another one in 1948 by William Dobell. 10

History Revealed

Class of 2006 Drinks by the Lagoon Sarah Hanrahan, Hannah Billingsley, Jared Bache, Nicholas Mahlouzarid es, Chris Drew

It is well known that The Cathedral School was founded in 1917 as St Anne’s, a Church of England school for girls, established by the Sisters of the Society of the Sacred Advent. Around that time, the Society had several schools spread right across Queensland, and for more than 100 years, the vision and influence of the Sisters has had a profound impact on generations of students. Mr Ray Geise OAM is researching this history and early next year will publish a book on the role of the SSA in educating girls in Queensland. He recently visited the school (as well as St James Cathedral and All Souls St Gabriels School in Charters Towers) in his quest to find further information and photographs for his book. Ray spent a full day poring over old Dawn magazines and photographs in our archives, and was delighted with the material he was able to find. He also enjoyed an interesting conversation with Peg Holborn and Del Ward (past students) who had vivid memories of the Sisters to share with him.

A trip down memory lane Kaye Rainey (nee Taylor) was in Townsville recently for the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, and took the time to revisit her old school. Kaye attended St Anne’s as a day student for four years and was school captain in 1957. After leaving school, Kaye was immediately put to work as a teacher at the school – first in the kindergarten then in the secondary school science department. Later she became a librarian and has lived and worked in Canberra most of her life. While in Townsville, she enjoyed catching up with her good friend Edith Foster, also a past student who was a boarder from Winton.
