Junior School IRC Fun Outdoors - Year 8 Outdoor Education

Principal

I am very much looking forward to the first week back of Term 3 and the opportunity to celebrate The Cathedral School’s 93rd birthday. We will be welcoming back the school’s first lay Principal, Mr Neil Tucker, who will be our guest speaker at both the Foundation Day service on Friday 16 July, and at the reunion dinner on Saturday 17 July. Mr Tucker oversaw the introduction of boys to The Cathedral School in 1980 and he is looking forward to catching up with those students who were at Cathedral during his time as Principal. Foundation Day will also provide us with an opportunity to formally open the School’s Building Education Revolution (BER) project and we will hopefully be joined by our Federal Member of Parliament, Mr Peter Lindsay, for the dedication of this very impressive building. Those former students who are here for the ceremony will have the opportunity to tour this new facility. Following the Foundation Day ceremony we will have the second running of the “Lagoon Dash”. The Chatham House girls and Langton House boys will be defending their shields this year, as will the staff team who won the first “bragging rights” shield over the Year 12 student and past student teams. I will be speaking to Neil Tucker about entering a Principal’s team in this year’s race! Of course no birthday celebration would be complete without birthday cake, and all students, past and present, will be sharing in cake after the running of the Lagoon Dash. The program of events for Foundation Day and the Reunion Weekend can be found below. I urge all past students to take this opportunity to return to Cathedral and catch up with old friends.

New Junior School

Information Resource Centre Opens its Doors

Mrs Byrne with Year 3S on their first tour of the new Junior School IRC

Year 3S was the first class to go to the new Junior School Information Resource Centre (IRC). It is so big you could almost get lost. There are lots of new computers. Mrs Byrne took us around in a snake shape though the book shelves and showed us where all the books are located. The new library has new books, a learning zone, a smart board, reading lounges and lots of newspaper articles. There are picture books with a special area for the little ones to read as well as fact books and chapter books. There are also lovely posters and paintings hanging on the walls. In the weeks leading up to the Interhouse Musical performance night, students from the Middle and Senior Schools were busily rehearsing their routines, making costumes, painting backdrops and working as teams to put on a fantastic show. The hard work paid off in the end as the crowd enjoyed a fantastic night of musical entertainment. Each house was required to perform an instrumental and a choir piece as well as a mini musical. Congratulations to Bede who were the overall winners on the night taking out all three titles. JUNE 2010

North Queensland

Science and Engineering

CHAMPION SCHOOL

On Friday 30 April, The Cathedral School’s team of 25 Year 10 students and 4 Year 9 students were crowned North Queensland champions in the Science and Engineering Challenge The event required students to work in 8 small groups of 3-5 on a range of challenging tasks including: • Build the lightest possible bridge to span a 70 cm gap, while supporting a load • Make a missile launching device from dowelling to be able to project a ball both accurately and over a long distance • Mission to Mars: Construct a vehicle to travel over a rough terrain without losing its load Each design was then assessed for its performance and in some cases, also the materials used in its construction. Team Manger and Head of Mathematics Mr Andrew Arratoon attributes the team’s success to a combination of excellent teamwork the ability to interpret the problem and recognize the key constraints to work with and to then apply high level thinking to devise solutions. As North Queensland champions, the team has now qualified for the Queensland event to be held in Brisbane in late August.

STAFF PROFILE MUSIC TEACHER

Miss Katherine Slager

Under Eights Day On Friday 28 May the children of Cathedral’s Early Learning Centre and Junior School celebrated the joys of childhood as a part of the celebrations for Under Eight’s Week. A myriad of activities were planned for children from Senior Kindy to Year 3 and their parents to get involved with, such as kite making, bubble blowing, story telling and children’s yoga. A face painting activity was also provided by the Senior School Early Childhood Studies class. Under Eights’ Week is an event organised annually by the Early Childhood Australia Queensland Branch which aims to give young children a forum to shine and enhance community awareness of the rich and competent contribution young children make to the community.

Miss Katherine Slager studied at UQ, and currently teaches Classroom Music from Year 7 – 12 at The Cathedral School. Her work at the school also involves taking the Middle School Vocal Ensemble, and leading the music at weekly Chapel Services for day and boarding students. What do you like most about The Cathedral School? There are so many great things about working at Cathedral. Usually, the highlight of my week is hearing all of the students sing at weekly Chapel Services. They all sing so well and from the heart, especially the boarding students. What was your favourite subject at school? That would probably be Music. Which instruments do you play? Piano and voice. I also learnt the clarinet at school. Have you got an interesting fact about music at The Cathedral School? Cathedral is unique, in that we believe a music education is the right of every child. In the Year 8 Classroom Music Program, every student has the opportunity to succeed in Music, regardless of previous experience.

“Get ready, set and go” were the words everyone waited for as they raced for their house in the annual cross country in April. Students had been training for this event for a number of weeks leading up to the event both in class and before school. The effort of students was impressive and everyone is to be congratulated.

This year’s winners were:

Solid as a Rock On Wednesday 14 April 2010, the whole Junior School gathered together for a special assembly. Ben Hobson from the National Servicemen’s Association presented The Cathedral School with a very special plaque. The plaque is a remembrance of the soldiers who fought and died in the war to free our country. This special ANZAC plaque was placed on a rock behind the Rock Centre. They also presented the Junior School leaders with two books which will the join the Junior School Library collection. Written by Kelsey Popham and Jordan Duff Year 6 Junior School Leaders

THE CONNECTION

On Tuesday 4 May 2010 was the beginning of a journey I will remember for the rest of my life. Myself and the class of 8C embarked on a 5 day kayaking trip along the Burdekin River. We all knew it was not going to be easy. As many nervous and excited faces walked onto the bus we were all ready for a journey to never forget. The moment we got off the bus, it was straight into our kayaking adventure. Most days we covered about 12km’s.The most challenging day was a striking 22km kayak along the Burdekin River. However, we thought the kayaking was the challenge, but then had to cook, clean, dig dunnies in the ground and make bivvies. Luckily for us we stayed in tents most nights. This journey took us to many historical sites and we saw many fascinating rock formations. Some of us were forced out of our comfort zone and jumped off giant rocks into the harsh cold water. We came into this camp as individuals, thinking of our own needs, but came out as a team, working together as one. Our class has most definitely bonded more closely. Five days later we returned for a well earned shower and plenty of rest. What doesn’t kill us can only make us stronger.

Best Boarding Facilities in North Queensland The girls’ boarding facilities are about to undergo a $3.8m refurbishment and extension when building works commence on the Sister Frances boarding house at the end of Term 2. The Sister Frances upgrade will allow female boarders to have access to the latest in facilities which will include private rooms for senior students with their own study area, high speed internet access and air-conditioning. The boarding house will also include double the space in common rooms for each level, kitchens, late night study areas and an administration area including meeting rooms. The Cathedral School is very committed to its boarding students. This can reflected in the $5 million refurbishment of the boys’ boarding house, Akins Dormitory in 2008. All the building works will be completed in time for the start of the 2011 school year. Boarding students Grace Harrington (Year 7) (top) and Moewaiya Youngblutt (Year 8) are looking forward to the new facilities in 2011.

Darren, his wife Melissa and three children Harrison, Emma & Sophie have joined the Cathedral community this year from Brisbane where Darren held the position of Deputy Director of Boarding/Middle School Teacher at Brisbane Boys’ College. The Parks family have settled in well at Cathedral with the children taking full advantage of all the sport and extra curricular activities available to them. Darren is also a bit of sports buff himself, enjoying cycling up Castle Hill, watching tennis, cricket and AFL. What do you like most about The Cathedral School? I like the small size and the positive relationships between the students and staff. I also like the grounds and the fact that we can have a laugh about things even though education is a serious business. What was your favourite subject at school? I loved Ancient History with Modern History as a close second. Where is the most interesting place you have worked? Probably my first independent school, Canterbury College at Waterford, south of Brisbane. The school was new and had a fascinating clientele and was carved out of the middle of the bush. We used to have koalas in trees in the middle of the school and wild horses running around the rugby fields. The kids were quite rough and tough but the school was a great one to make a start in because I had so many opportunities. My boss was very supportive as I was in a position of responsibility at quite an early age Have you got an interesting fact about the Middle School program at Cathedral? I think the Investigations as a subject is a very interesting concept. I also really like the student parliament which gives students the opportunity to speak out about issues and concerns. I think that the National Curriculum will also definitely have a big impact on what we teach in the Middle School. JUNE 2010

During Term 2 the ELC’s Senior Kindy class have been learning about tools. They have discovered what tools do, how they are used to build things and also how important it is to be careful when using them. Mr Andrew Wood, one of the Senior Kindy fathers is a builder; he came in to talk to the children about his job and to show them how to build a cubby house. Andrew involved the children in making the cubby house by getting them to hold the screws while he drilled. In front of the children’s eyes he built a large white cubby house for use during our outdoor time. The children enjoyed watching and participating in this project. Thank you to the Wood family for this kind donation. The children will have many great times playing in the cubby house.

It’s begun! The 2010 School Production, Beauty and the Beast, is now well underway with regular rehearsals several days each week. With much hard work by the dancers, principal performers and the chorus, not to mention the orchestra working their way through a fiveinch music score: Beauty and the Beast promises to be one of the best productions to date! Rehearsals for main characters started with a hilarious read-through of the script. Chorus rehearsals followed soon after as Mrs Orr, our beloved Director of Music, organised voice placement in the choir. Dancers, working with past student and wonderful choreographer, Melissa Prince, began learning their routines. Rehearsal pace has picked up over the past few weeks with chorus now learning four-part harmonies and dancers perfecting their movements as different objects or animals (wolves, serviettes, brickwalls!). The main characters are busily forming their characters and learning their lines. I was very excited to discover I had been cast as the female lead, Belle. Beauty and the Beast is a childhood favourite of mine. I love the rehearsal process, working with all the other main characters and workshopping different ways to do each scene. I think my favourite scenes are those with Lumiere (the candlestick) and Cogsworth (the clock). They are so much fun to watch!

THE CONNECTION

Being double cast was initially a little daunting – I was worried about being compared to the other Belle (Tayla Young) all the time, but now I see it as a positive challenge and also, really interesting as I get to see how another person interprets the part. Ms Turner, our director, allows us to find individual ways to play our characters and I believe that will lead to a more exciting, dynamic show. The advertising banners went up on Open Day and our production t-shirts arrive at the end of June – it’s all very exciting. Next term, we’ll have costumes and props and I can’t wait until we get to use them in rehearsals! Beauty and the Beast is going to be a spectacular show – get ready to book your tickets! Tickets will be available for purchase in September. Beauty and the Beast will play at Riverway Arts Complex and there will be four performances over three days – 21, 22, 23 October. PRESIDENT’S REPORT all know and remember are written here. Mrs Casey, Mrs Holborn, Mrs Louis, Mrs Heatley, Sister Chaseley, Sister Eunice and the list continues. All these ladies gave so much to our school and we thank them for that. They had Theatre Evenings and Lamington Drives, provided refreshments at interval of the school play and all money raised was used to purchase items for our school. It sounds like they all had lots of fun and friendships that have lasted a life time.

Our school is full of history and we are all part of it. So many wonderful memories and people have walked down our corridors. Why the nostalgia you ask? There are many reasons, one being this year marks my 30th Reunion for the Class of 1980 and another the death of one of our members and dear friend, Mrs Amy Casey on the 19th May at the great age of 91. Amy loved our school and had many roles as a committee member. Her association with The Cathedral School covers an amazing 78 years. My memories of Amy are of a lovely lady with a sparkle in her eye and smiling as she shared her stories over a coffee.

Looking at our school now, it has changed yet stayed the same, just like all of us. I am looking forward to our Foundation weekend on the 16 - 18 July. Friday we will have the Foundation Day Service and our second Lagoon Dash. I can still hear Amy yelling “Go Bede” as I yelled “Go Langton”. Everyone loves the tour of the school on Saturday, especially the boarders finding their old rooms. Afternoon tea is provided and we’ll hold a quick Annual General Meeting then it’s off to get ready for our Reunion Dinner; a fun time where everyone can share their stories. I’ll have some old Dawn magazines out so make sure you let us know what year you graduated. House flags will also be up so have your cameras ready. See you soon. ‘around the ridges’ It is always a pleasure to meet up with past students during my annual trips to meet parents and prospective families in our boarding catchment area. Each time the school has a display at a country show or Field Day, there will always be past students come up to say ‘hi’ and share some memories from their days at school – some from as far back as the 1930’s! This year, I also had the pleasure of seeing 3 past students during my marketing trip into Asia - Bryan Wong (Hong Kong), Asia Xu (China) and Jung Yong Park (Korea). Bryan and Asia both graduated last year and were still at home pending midyear course start dates at university – Bryan is going to study Fashion Design in Perth, and Asia is now at Bond University studying Medical Science. Jung Yong graduated from Cathedral in 2000 and, having completed a degree in Accounting is now in charge of a finance team at a large shipping company in Seoul. Toni Lanphier Registrar

In Memoriam - Amy Leah Casey Amy Leah Casey – 91 years of age – Life Member and Vice President of St. Anne’s School Old Girl Association, passed away on 19 May, 2010. To the end Amy maintained her interest in the activities and love of the school; now The Cathedral School of St Anne & St James. She presented a prize each year at the annual Speech Night in memory of her much loved daughter Barbara; also a past student. Amy served on the committee of the Old Girls Association (OGA) for many years – in the days when the school did not receive any Government subsidies and the Sisters were very reliant on the generosity of benefactors. Mrs Alice Heatley’s OGA Card Morning Teas in the school dining room, Lamington Drives every six weeks where 120 dozen Lamingtons were made, a booking at the Stagedoor Theatre every six weeks for 9 years, the cake and lolly stall at the fete and fashion parades all enabled the committee to purchase all the furniture for the dchool dining room, the mattresses for the dormitories, the diving board steps & ladder for the pool and the many items the Sisters required. Amy worked tirelessly to help achieve these things as well as being the Treasurer.

A story Amy told was about the very first Tuckshop conducted on the Basketball Court at the school in Stokes Street. She was asked to join a few mothers to operate the Tuckshop on Mondays. Her job was to cook the fresh beetroot for the salad rolls as no tinned beetroot was available back then. The OGA conducted adult education classes in cooking, sewing etc and once again Amy who was a gifted Needlewoman taught copper tooling and art to enthusiastic students. She generously opened her lovely homes in Mundingburra and later Kelso for fund raising events because of her love of the school and her desire to see it go on. She especially felt honoured to be included in the opening of Heatley House last year. Amy was a lady in every sense – she will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by the myriad of Past Students who knew her. Rest in Peace, Amy – Per Vola Sunata. In Memoriam -

Father Ainsley Haldane It with regret that we report the passing of a former staff member, Father Ainsley Haldane, after a courageous battle with prostate cancer. Father Ainsley Haldane was appointed as Bede Housemaster and English teacher in 1986. In 1987 he introduced Speech and Drama to the school and produced several plays and musicals, including Ulysses, The Crucible and Oliver.

THE CONNECTION

In 1991 he was ordained as a Priest of the Anglican Church and this led to him being appointed as Chaplain of Trinity Anglican School in Cairns. Following his time at Trinity Anglican School, in 1994 he moved to All Saints School on the Gold Coast. The sympathy of the whole school community is extended to Ainsley’s family. He will be warmly remembered by staff and students, especially for his great sense of humour and his ability to inspire young people.

Traditions live on

Earlier this term Mrs Wunch’s Year 9 Science class spent some time cleaning out one of Cathedral’s most memorable features – the lagoon. This tradition still remains even after all those years. Can you remember the time you cleaned out the lagoon? BOYS BBQ To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the school becoming fully co-educational, the Past Students’ Association held a Boys’ Barbeque on 17 April for male students and teachers. There was not a huge turnout; however, those that did come were treated to drinks and a barbequed lunch on the function lawn, as well as a tour of the school with the Principal and a few senior boys who volunteered to host the event. The guys were able to catch up and many stories of the past were told as well as some from the present by a few current teachers who were there. A good time was had by all and the past students were able to go home after a weekend of reminiscing with

their old mates, and enjoying the memories of their school days. I especially enjoyed talking to some of the guys about what the school used to be like. “There were never as many boys at the school when we were here,” was what most of them said - and they had only seen the boarding boys as it was a weekend event. The next event on the Past Students’ Association calendar is the reunion weekend on 17 of July, when past principal Neil Tucker will be speaking about the changes that occurred in the school in the 1980’s when enrolment was first opened up to boys in all year levels.
