NZQA - Qualifications Credits are earned as a result of being assessed against Achievement Standards or Unit Standards. All Unit Standards are assessed internally. Achievement Standards can be either internally or externally assessed. Externally assessed Achievement Standards are generally completed in the November exam period.

NCEA Level 1

80 credits at Level 1 or higher including 10 Literacy and 10 Numeracy.

NCEA Level 2

80 credits. 60 credits at Level 2 or higher including Level 1: 10 Literacy and 10 Numeracy.

NCEA Level 3

80 credits. 60 credits at Level 3 including Level 1: 10 Literacy and 10 Numeracy.

ENDORSEMENTS COURSE ENDORSEMENTS Subjects that complete Achievement Standards may be endorsed with Merit or Excellence. This is possible if the student achieves 14 credits or more at Merit or Excellence. 3 of these credits must come from an external assessment.

LEVEL ENDORSEMENTS All NCEA certificates may be endorsed with Merit or Excellence. To gain an endorsement at least 50 credits at Merit or Excellence must be gained at the same level.

New Zealand Scholarship Year 13 New Zealand Scholarship provides recognition and monetary reward to top students in their last year of schooling. Scholarship candidates are expected to demonstrate highlevel critical thinking, abstraction and generalisation, and to integrate, synthesise and apply knowledge, skills, understanding, and ideas to complex situations.

To be eligible to receive a scholarship award, the student must be enrolled in tertiary study in New Zealand for the years in which they receive monetary awards. For awards with second or subsequent year payments, recipients must maintain a ‘B’ grade average each year of their tertiary study in New Zealand. For further information see the NZQA website.

STAR COURSES UC STAR COURSES This program can offer students who have been identified as Gifted and Talented the opportunity to experience a new stimulating challenge.

The STAR Programme allows secondary school students from anywhere in New Zealand to enrol in first-year degree-level courses while they are in Year 12 or 13. The University of Canterbury offers both oncampus and distance courses. Once the students achieve University Entrance they can credit courses they have successfully completed towards a relevant degree at UC and usually at other universities too.

STAR YOUTH GUARANTEE COURSES

STAR programmes are for Year 11 to 13 learners who want to explore tertiary study while still at school. Many tertiary education providers such as polytechnics and private training establishments offer open days, short courses and other ways to explore tertiary study.

GATEWAY PROGRAMMES Gateway programmes enable senior students to access structured workplace learning integrated with school-based learning.

Students’ learning is assessed in the workplace and they can achieve credits on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF) towards their National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA).

Gateway is designed to support school students’ transition into the workforce by offering them workplace learning while at secondary school. The workplace learning should include: • set unit standards for the student to work towards and achieve • specific assessment methods.

DUAL ENROL PROGRAMMES Dual Enrol Programmes are for senior secondary school learners, aged 16 or over, who want to experience tertiary or workplace learning at Level 2 or 3 or above while still at school. You are enrolled at school and at a tertiary training provider such as a polytechnic, and spend time at each location.

On some days of the week you: • are enrolled at school • attend school • study for NCEA Level 2 or above.

On the other days you: • are enrolled at a tertiary training provider • attend a tertiary training provider • achieve industry-derived unit standards which count towards NCEA.

Te Reo Ingarihi - ENGLISH ENGLISH - Level 1

At Level 1 English is a compulsory subject.

ENGLISH - Level 1

ENG 103 What will I learn?

The course is designed for students who have completed the Year 10 ELL course and have acquired solid English language skills that still require some further development.

How will it be assessed?

Achievement and Unit Standards at Level 1.

ENGLISH for English Language Learners ENL 101 /ENL 201 / ENL 301 What will I learn?

This course is designed to help English language learners improve their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. There is a focus on practical English, with skills that can help students prepare for life out of school. There will also be attention paid to areas that can be problematic for learners of English, such as grammar, comprehension and vocabulary.

How will it be assessed?

Internal assessments are held throughout the year and are based on the essential skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking.

ENGLISH- Level 2 - 201

ENG 201 What will I learn?

The following topics may be covered: novel, film, writing, language research, speech and wide reading. Level 2 English is essential for all students wishing to progress to tertiary study. It provides the opportunity to gain the credits required for University Entrance (5 reading and 5 writing).

Internal achievement standards and two external achievement standards (a 3-hour end of year exam) assessment.

ENGLISH - Level 3 - 301

Entry Requirements: 14 or more credits in Level 1 English, including one external assessment.

What could I achieve? 16 Credits towards NCEA Level 2. University Entrance literacy requirements (8 Reading and 18 Writing).

ENG 301 What will I learn?

The emphasis of this course is to prepare students for further literary and language studies at a tertiary level. The following topics may be covered: Literature research, novel, film, writing, oral presentation.

Ngā Reo- TE REO MĀORI TE REO MĀORI - Level 1

REO 101 What will I learn?

During this course, you will learn to further converse in Te Reo Māori in familiar social situations and cope with less familiar ones.

There will be further development of sentence structures, leading to the ability to read, write, and translate passages of text. There is a Tikanga Māori element to the course that is research based, predominantly in the English language, with some Te Reo Māori components.

Students will attend a marae trip with other schools from around our city.

The Te Reo Māori programme at Catholic Cathedral College is under the Manawhenua o Ngāi Tūāhuriri.

Course Costs: $0 Entry Requirements: A good understanding of the content covered in Year 9 and Year 10.

TE REO MĀORI - Level 2

REO 201 What will I learn?

During this course you will further extend your language skills, allowing you to read, write and speak at an even higher level. You will expand on your ability to communicate with others predominantly in reo Māori in social contexts. The Tikanga Māori element to the course will explore oral history and traditions, allowing you to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Te Ao Māori. There will be an opportunity for some students to complete a paper at the University of Canterbury. The Te Reo Māori programme at Catholic Cathedral College is under the Manawhenua o Ngāi Tūāhuriri.

REO 301 What will I learn?

Taking this subject at Level 3 will see you gain a level of fluency. There will be a focus on extending vocabulary and learning more complicated sentence structures in order to improve your kōrero, whakarongo, tuhituhi, and pānui. The Tikanga Māori elements to the course will explore oral history and traditions, allowing you to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Te Ao Māori. There will be an opportunity for students to complete a paper at the University of Canterbury.

Pāngarau - MATHEMATICS MATHEMATICS - Level 1

MAT 101 What will I learn?

Mathematics in Year 11 is a consolidation and extension of work done in Junior Mathematics.

Standards offered cover the 6 Mathematics Curriculum Strands: Number and Algebra Measurement and Geometry Probability and Statistics with a focus on ensuring students gain the required 10 Numeracy credits, improve their problem solving skills and develop their extended abstract thinking.

How will it be assessed?

The course consists of Achievement Standards and Numeracy Unit Standards. Students can choose from the standards offered based on their preferences, future career goals and foundational knowledge.

Internal Achievement Standards are assessed throughout the year while External Achievement Standards are assessed in September (MCAT) or November.

Numeracy Unit Standards are internally assessed with evidence from classwork collected in a portfolio.

Course Costs: Students must have a scientific or graphical calculator.

Entry Requirements: None.

What could I achieve? Students should choose sufficient NCEA Level 1 standards to gain at least 14 credits.

Entry into Level 2 Courses will relate to the standards gained and the foundational knowledge demonstrated.

MATHEMATICS with CALCULUS - Level 2

MAC 201 What will I learn?

To consolidate and extend the Level One NCEA syllabus in Mathematics. A focus on Algebra, Graphs and an introduction to Calculus. It is a prerequisite for both Year 13 Statistics & Calculus courses.

How will it be assessed?

The course consists of Achievement Standards some of which are internally assessed in class time throughout the year and an external examination in November.

Course Costs: Students must have a scientific or graphical calculator as well as a device.

Entry Requirements: Minimum of 14 credits from Level One in Mathematics, including the AS 1.2 (Algebra) and 1.3 (Graphs).

MATHEMATICS with STATISTICS - Level 2 MAS 201 What will I learn?

To consolidate and extend the Level One NCEA syllabus in Mathematics. A focus on Statistics, Probability and an introduction to Statistical Reports. This course is a prerequisite for Year 13 statistics based on the level of achievement. It is required for most tertiary study and trade courses.

Course Costs: Students must have a scientific or graphical calculator as well as a device.

How will it be assessed?

The course consists of Achievement Standards some of which are internally assessed in class time throughout the year and an external examination in November.

MATHEMATICS with CALCULUS - Level 3

MAC 301 What will I learn?

Emphasis on calculus with algebra, graphing, trigonometric and computational skills being extended. The course assists you to formulate problems in Mathematical terms, and to apply mathematical knowledge. This course is appropriate if you are likely to continue studying Mathematics, physical sciences or engineering.

How will it be assessed?

The course consists of Achievement Standards some of which are internally assessed in class time throughout the year and an external examination in November.

MATHEMATICS with STATISTICS - Level 3

MAS 301 What will I learn?

The syllabus consolidates and extends year 12 work on probability and statistics. It provides a first course in statistical procedures based on probability distributions, simple modelling, problem solving situations and report writing.

The course is appropriate for students interested in numerical aspects of biological and social sciences, medicine, and in any field where the collection, presentation, analysis and interpretation of numerical data is important.

How will it be assessed?

The course consists of Achievement Standards some of which are internally assessed in class time throughout the year and an external examination in November.

Entry Requirements: Minimum of 14 credits from Level One in Mathematics including 1.12 (Chance & Data).

The 12 credits will be assessed using practical and theory components.

PED 201 What will I learn?

We will: Perform a physical activity in an applied setting Demonstrate understanding of the application of biophysical principles to training for physical activity and how and why biophysical principles relate to learning a new skill Analyse the application of risk management strategies to a challenging outdoor activity Demonstrate social responsibility in a physical activity.

Entry Requirements: Preferential entry for students who achieved the 12 credits in Level one.

What could I achieve? NCEA Level 2 17 Achievement standard credits.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION - Level 3

PED 301 What will I learn?

We will: • Perform a physical activity in an applied setting • Demonstrate understanding of the application of biophysical principles to training for physical activity and how and why biophysical principles relate to learning a new skill • Analyse the application of risk management strategies to a challenging outdoor activity • Demonstrate social responsibility in a physical activity.

Course costs: Contribution to overnight trip.

SPORTS LEADERSHIP - Level 2

SPT 201 What will I learn?

We will: • Perform a Physical activity in an applied setting • Apply knowledge of basic anatomy to the performance of sports skills • Participate in a team which has an objective • Participate in tramping and camping • Develop and implement an exercise plan for personal physical fitness.

This course will lead to SPT301 and will assist students who want to work in the coaching, sporting or fitness industry.

Entry Requirements: Preferential entry for students who achieved the 12 credits in Level one.

SPT 301 What will I learn?

We complete an Adventure based learning standard where students develop leadership in this area and also improve their skills a practical performance. This course will assist students who want to work in the coaching, sporting or fitness industry.

How will it be assessed?

Unit and Achievement standards containing a mixture of theory and practical components.

CATERING & HOSPITALITY - Level 1

Entry Requirements: None

CDH 101 What will I learn?

The course includes practical cookery and theoretical activities in food preparation and presentation. Food safety is a key component for Level 1 Catering and Hospitality. Food safety and hygiene can help gain a variety of part time or full time work in the Hospitality Industry (chef, barista, waitress, waiter, baker, food technologist, dietitian and childcare).

What could I achieve? 19 credits from Unit Standards.

CATERING & HOSPITALITY - Level 2

CDH 201 What will I learn?

HEALTH - Level 2

HTH 201 What will I learn?

The main topics covered are: managing change, adolescent health issues, relationships and taking action to improve people’s well being, learning about basic Human anatomy. Ideal for those seeking employment in the Health area.

How will it be assessed?

Internal assessments and an external assessment.

HEALTH - Level 3

HTH 301 What will I learn?

The main topics covered are: Western medicine, Alternative medicine, Health issues in NZ and in the Pasifika community, Ethical Issues in healthcare.

Internal assessments and an external assessment.

Ngā Toi - PERFORMING ARTS DRAMA - Level 1

DRA 101 What will I learn?

Students will learn how to use drama techniques to create a character, how to use conventions to create a piece of group performance, will have the opportunity to perform in a class production, and also learn about and perform using a specific theatre form (such as Clowning, or Elizabethan Theatre). All students are encouraged to take part in extracurricular performance opportunities such as the school production, drama club or theatre sports.

How will it be assessed?

The majority of assessments are performancebased internal standards, where students work in groups (there is no individual performance required). There is an end-of-year external examination that is a written exam based on theory that students have learnt throughout the year.

Entry Requirements: Successful completion of Year 10 Drama, previous performance experience, or an interest in performance and/or technical work.

What could I achieve? 21 credits, made up of 17 internal credits and 4 external credits.

Drama improves communication and provides an understanding of how to read body language. Students develop a greater empathy for other people and their behaviours by working with a variety of people within their peer group.

These are useful skills in any career that involves working with people. Although the course can help prepare those interested in a career in the performing arts, it will also help to develop skills required in a range of occupations - such as communication, presentation and working well with others.

DRAMA- Level 2

DRA 201 What will I learn?

Students will learn how to use drama techniques to create a character and have the opportunity to perform in a class production. They will also learn about theatre practitioners and more complex acting styles (such as Commedia dell’arte), as well as perceptively analysing the meaning behind drama performances. All students are encouraged to take part in extracurricular performance opportunities such as the school production, drama club and theatre sports.

How will it be assessed?

A mixture of internal performance based standards and external achievement standards.

All compulsory internal assessments are performance based and the external is a written exam based on the theatre form studied. There are also assessment opportunities for students who prefer to work behind the scenes, such as directing, scriptwriting and research.

Entry Requirements: 12+ credits in Year 11 Drama or English. An interest in performance and/or technical work. Students who have not taken Drama in Year 11 should apply to the TiC Performing Arts.

What could I achieve? 21 credits, consisting of 17 internal credits and 4 external credits.

All Drama credits are UE literacy credits, 16 reading and up to 8 writing. Students taking this course are able to achieve a subject endorsement.

DRAMA- Level 3

DRA 301 What will I learn?

Students will learn how to use drama techniques to create a character and how to use conventions to create a piece of group performance. Students will also learn about theatre practitioners and more complex acting styles and forms. Students will learn how to analyse Drama performance for meaning. MUS 301 What will I learn?

At Year 13, students complete a course designed on an individual basis. You will work through a program which reflects your interests in music, and builds on the topics you studied at Year 12.

You need a high level of motivation, good time management skills, and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently.

Students enrolled in Performance credits will receive free lessons for their instrument.

Level 3 Music will give you some of the entry requirements for ARA, MAINZ and University Music programs. The Performance program gives you the skills required to audition for Performing Arts programs. The Songwriting and Composition standards provide the evidence needed for entry to contemporary music courses and a University Composition Degree.
