BULL DEVELOPMENT

Bulls are born in December starting with a handful of embryo calves and go until the early part of April. In late April and May they are branded and receive a full round of vaccinations before their dams are sorted into breeding groups and off to spring pastures they go. By July the grass in the lower elevations has completely dried up and we sort for summer pastures. The bull calf pairs all head off to the same pasture to make one large contempory group on the edge of the Blue Mountains. They were all weaned in September, vaccinated and started on bull challenger from CHS. At this point we cut over half of our male calf crop to ensure we are truly bring you the top end. Early October the bulls were moved to their development pen where they continue on bull challenger, grass and some grain hay. December 2 we weighed and boostered the bulls. They had some time to just grow and develop until the bull sale prep started with clipping Jan 7th and 8th and was followed by the talented Trista DeVries coming to picture and video them Jan 25th and 26th. As you watch the videos remember they are over 40 days old and the bulls have really matured and bloomed in that time. Dr. Rob Thonney of Ranch Hand Veterinary Services came on Feb 3rd to perform the breeding soundness exams, at which point we captured yearling weights on the bulls even though they are mostly 11 months old. We move these bulls up and down the gravel road each time we have a presale task for them to complete. We know the cattle and would encourage you to reach out with any questions or specific needs.

TAG COLORS

Bulls are tagged according to breed and cataloging. Green tag indicates greater then 75% Gelbvieh (GV) and considered a purebred Gelbvieh by the American Gelbvieh Association. Blue tagged bulls are Balancers. They are 75% to 25% Gelbvieh, Red Angus or Angus. Bulls carrying a white tag are purebred Red Angus.

Homozygous black. When you highlight his performance and carcass EPD’s he will rise to the top very quickly. A definite candidate that could increase your balance sheet assets, as well as, generate more income. I think the phenotype and genotype make him hard to overlook.

The stride that this Mayweather son takes and his foot size are impressive. His dam, after 11 years, is still one of our favorites. She has two daughters working here and one in Canada, as well as a bull in Canada, one at the Bar U and one at Lightning Bolt. History of function and sheer production says this is one for the long run. If you come before sale day and check out Mayweather, you will want to get it on this genetic combo.

Good bull that had room to grow on note day. You will appreciate his hip and leg build. Extra long bodied on a good set of feet and legs.

JLSL 493M 29

Hudson’s progeny need to be on your short list to view in the pen or on video. Their EPD profiles are balanced but their performance is where it counts. Our pen notes have this guy as long, thick topped, and heavy structured. You will see the payoff at the scale.

Loads of dense muscle on a moderate frame. From the rear view, you can’t get around his width and squareness to the ground. Visual appraisal will weigh on your decision to buy this gentle bull more than his genotype. We think his construction makes him a rancher’s choice.

Homozygous polled, feed efficient option. Smaller in stature, but makes up for it in width and pure brawn. He is the only son of Jigsaw, the 3 time NILE Champion that is owned by High Desert Cattle company, because we only use him AI. Lot 53 is backed by GREAT cows!

JLSL 4152M 54

Homozygous polled volume buyer choice. Solid construction with muscle and bold center body. His Dam is the only natural calf of our donor Pheonix, our favorite long lasting cow lines. The Revival sire is also one that has stood the test of time in the hills of Washington, still breeding a full season at 6 years of age.

CE option that would do best on a young set of cows. Breed him to the colored up ones and expect an even set of black calves. Moderate and complete with a cool designed front end so his calves slip right out. Homozygous polled and black, be sure to get a visual appraisal on him before sale day.

Top 25% CREA and Top 35% Marbling. Improve your carcass merit on the grid. Good patterned Advantage son, that is heavy on the bonework. Advantage is a throw back in the tank to a 22 year old bull, but an old bull who left his mark with over 1500 progeny in the database!

JLSL 4135M

Dam will be 16 and hasn’t lost her reproductive ability or udder structure. We think he needs to make your short list because of the longevity he has the potential to project into his progeny. The longer they stay in the herd the more money they make you! He also has huge carcass potential as indicated by the spread down his top and fleshing ability.

Moderate made and round ribbed. We noted the view when you step to his side. Balanced

Balancer Bulls

Outcross Balancer herd bull to lead off this section. High growth bull out of Pete’s Covington Gelbvieh cow and one stud of a Proplusion son we compained 2 years ago. He as the design and big performance EPD’s, there is no doubt he can help grow your calf cash crop.

Heifer Bull! Easy Rider cleaned up the heifers after the AI and resuled in lots 63 and 64 out of the Red Angus herd. Here is one with the added extras of angles and eye appeal. Good shouldered and dead level topped, by sale day he will bloom into a unique breeding piece.

Unregistered Balancer 65

Short on black Balancer options this year and a paperwork error on my part to not get his dams papers, this bull will sell with out papers. He is out of a purebred Angus cow and Jeopardy, a Mayweather son that has added some stretch to his progeny. A 90 pound birth weight, surviving wolves in his summer pasture and still weaning at 625 pounds should make him grab a little attention. Deep ribbed, easy going kind

Balancer Bulls

Wide chested and loads of natural shape and spread down his top. We like the build of his hip and you will too. If you need to find a few more for your bull battery, he’s definitely an volume buyer option.

Red Angus Bulls

Double down to herd improvement with this Brunswick ET full sib to lot 71. Both are easy to get around in the pen and their genotype profile says they can push weights and carcass merit up the chart. Top 21% for WW and Top 1% for REA. Of the two, this bull has the phenotype advantage of being slightly bolder chested and wider topped. Power in the cow family with 41B’s dam being a full sib to Basin EXT 5233

Ultra gentle ET sib to lot 70 that leads out with a smoother pattern and a longer side. He’s a cool cat, always curious and then moves out like one when he hits his stride. Big performer on paper to increase sale weights and Top 25% for MARB. If you are targeting either of the brothers to buy, we think you could make it a family affair and focus genetic improvement on a bigger cross section of your cows..

We don’t like to admit we have favorites, but this is the bull that typifies all the good stuff of the breed with the added extras that increase sticker prices. At the top of his class for WW and YW, as well as MILK, he could make a set of heifers to drool over. This guy is ideal for the multiverse, with the muscle and growth EPD’s to raise pay weights for the commercial guy and the pattern to build a seedstock program.

Dollars and cents bull with huge WW and YW EPD’s. Reputation paired well with Rafter C cows and made them low input, high growth stars. His young 9 Mile dam has sure made a mark early with her first calf making thre replacement pen and this bull made our showstring. Bold up front and unrivaled depth from forerib to flank, we think you need to get the 411 on him by sale day.

If you like them soggy and easy feeding, this Reputation son needs to be on your short list. Balanced EPD profile that matches his look. Moderate and round ribbed, he is a cost effective carcass improver.

Dark red Longmire bull with massive spread and shape over his top. Notes from the pen have him with an eye popping 3/4 view. Top growth EPD rankings match that he is big footed and heavy constructed. He could really shake things up at sale time.

Booty rockin everywhere with this Longmire son. Dark red, deep sided, and moderate, you really can’t miss him from the back side. Single digit ranking for WW and a 128 YW could help the cow guy who needs to bring weights up. Be sure to watch his video or see him on sale day, he is a beast.

Ultra cool hip and hind leg construction and moderate. This deep cherry red bull is built to last with good angles and a big round foot. Off of a 7 year old cow, his maternal sib generated some excitement in our 2024 sale.

Our notes have this final option to buy out of Longmire as a GOOD bull. We like the spread to his center plane and the fact the he can catch a solid stride. Top 11% for WW and YW, he is a multi trait improvement model with a Top 12% rank for Marbling. Weigh up on his phenotype on sale day or his video, we think you will want to be all in when the gavel drops.

Impressive set of feet and legs on this bull. Major-league rib shape from spine to flank that shouts primal cut power. Definitely a bull for the rancher who knows where the beef is! Black red carrier sired by a son of KG Justified.

Commercial Females

10 Black Commercial 2024 born open heifers. They are the top cut of the 50 heifers from the Dimke Cattle LLC program where no heifers are being retained this year. All are sired by Ledgerwood Gelbvieh bulls and off a commercial angus base set of cows. Heifers have been on a hay diet since weaning. Selling 2 lots of 5 or double up and take all 10 home.
