u have been to the shelter in recent months, you might seen some new faces That is because for the first time in st 2 years we have new volunteers coming in to help Last 3 new volunteers joined us to assist in helping keep the er clean, and the shelter cats fed and happy

These new volunteers joined our wonderful veteran volunteers performing tasks such as the daily afternoon feeding, cleaning out litter boxes, weekly weighing the shelter cats, washing windows, and doing laundry They help sort and organize our supplies They do minor building maintenance, repairing and replacing those little things so important to keeping the building in tip-top shape. They are socializers, keeping company the shy cats, the scare cats, the unhappy and withdrawn cats.

The new volunteers joined our experienced volunteers helping with the annual Santa Paws festival in December They helped with our other fundraising events, such as Catty Hour and Yoga You will see them in future events as well

All the Cat Care volunteers come to us with all kinds of unique and valuable skills and experiences They share with our staff the unwavering devotion to cats and their well-being We value their time, energy, skills and devotion

Cat people know the word. We know the unique combination of affection, wrath, and independence that dance within our tri-colored feline friends Whether you avoid them adore them, tortoiseshell cats are usually not shy about expressing themselves

“Not shy” can be an understatement, of course. Cats contain multitudes and shatter our expectations

This brings us to Lucca

To call Lucca “not shy” would be like calling Colorado weather “a bit unpredictable.” Lucca is as likely to greet you by rubbing on your legs and chatting with you as by swinging at you so hard she leaves a shed claw embedded in your hand (I speak from experience )

In the interest of full disclosure, I should confess that I’m a sucker for a hard case So when I left my first meeting with the beautiful 13-years-young chatty tortoiseshell cat who had settled into Cat Care Society after being surrendered by an owner unable to care for her with my hand freshly bloodied, I was in love

Does Lucca understand my infatuation? Almost certainly not. Does my presence sometimes annoy her? Undoubtedly. But sometimes when she thinks I’m not paying attention I catch her giving me the slow blinks of true cat trust And even when she grumbles at me while I sit and coo sweet nothings at her, I suspect she knows that even though I try way too hard and take too many pictures, I only want to earn her friendship

And much to my envy, there are a few lucky humans on whom Lucca has bestowed her love I’ve seen her so excited by the presence of one of these humans that she bursts from her comfy bed to run to their side (On a few rare occasions I have received this happy greeting which tells me that I’m on my way to her very exclusive club of human besties.) If you’ve ever seen a cat with a reputation

for being a grump absolutely light up at the sight of their Chosen One, you know just how special that is And if you’ve been lucky enough to be that person, you know the special spring it puts in your step to be Chosen.

Maybe that’s why I love the hard cases so much Of course, I love the affectionate extroverts and the playful kittens too – but there’s no feeling quite like the feeling the first time a cat who has shown nothing but fear or stress suddenly shows you trust. When I first experienced that feeling with my big orange boy Simba (a lover with a troubled past that led to a serious biting habit), I knew that I’d never grow tired of it

I’m still working on Lucca Some days I get to give her some gentle pets on her head, and some days I get told off before I even reach for her. Sometimes I just watch her play with a toy or talk to her or play her Taylor Swift songs (she’s partial to the Reputation era) I dream of the day when Lucca will decide I have proven myself to her –almost as much as I dream of the day that Lucca will steal the heart of some lucky adopter forever

Because beneath her rough exterior is a heart dying to shower someone with love She just needs the right someone

LIFESAVING:

816 cats and kittens came into our care

717 cats and kittens were adopted into loving homes

37 cats were returned to their owners as part of our Temporary Care Program

1 cats were transferred to partner organizations

Live release rate - 93%

ADOPTIONS:

286 adult cats were adopted

357 kittens were adopted

72 senior cats were adopted

18% of cats and kittens adopted were either seniors or had special needs

The oldest cat to be adopted from CCS was 21 years old

COMMITMENT TO CARE FOR ALL:

96 senior cats came into our care - the oldest intake age was 21 years old

105 cats and kittens were transferred from other shelters where they did not thrive or were not adoptable

226 stray and abandoned cats and kittens cared for

501 cats and kittens were fostered

44 cats were provided with a comfortable hospice home and given end of life care

Gave 1,655 vaccinations

Performed 960 medical procedures

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? -

Ziggy came to Cat Care Society in April 2019 through the CCS Temporary Care Program She was surrendered to CCS in June of 2019, 11 years young

Ziggy was a shy sweet girl weighing in at over 13 pounds She was living by herself in the CCS Meow Mart store on a weight loss diet. She did not seek out visitors but welcomed attention in the form of pets and catnip toys She loves to rub your legs and has quite a purr

Ziggy was adopted in November 2019 and has been living her best life bossing her humans around as much as possible and catching every sunbeam she can She enjoys supervised visits with her squirrel and rabbit friends in her backyard domain. Ziggy also has a beautiful fireplace that she can warm up by after her excursions Her humans like jigsaw puzzles and she is willing to assist whenever she can Ziggy is also an expert laundry assistant

She has a very large staircase where she can observe her humans She can scope out visitors from above and make an entrance when she chooses

Ziggy is enjoying her new meowdeling career and even chirps at her people when she has a good pose! She has fans across the United States and worldwide, including Japan, Russia, Germany, Sweden, England, and Brazil.

Ziggy has not been successful in her weight loss journey She has regular vet checkups and refers to herself as big boned
