It’sgoingtobeabusyspringandsummerandasweenter intothecomingmonthsthereareafew“cat”thingsthatwe needtothinkaboutandbepreparedtoaddress

First, let’s talk about kittens. Cat Care Society is preparing for a busy, busy year of kittens This is in part due to isolation and reduced services during the pandemic Veterinarians had to slow down office visits and with stayat-home orders, people were not able to get their pets in for spay and neuter as quickly as they, or we, would have liked. Additionally, many of our partners were not outside, walking the greenbelts and open spaces, trapping feral catsforTNRprograms(trap,neuter,release)

We are already seeing our adoption rooms filling with kittens and we have a long waiting list. Kittens are always a wonderful addition to the family, but they require a lot of time and attention when they come into your home If you are considering a kitten this spring, please set up an appointment to come and learn more about the care and support of these little friends from our staff and pick-up a newkittenresourceguide.

Last year when stay-at-home orders went into effect, there was a significant increase in pet adoptions throughout the metro-Denver area and now that people are gradually returning to a more normal lifestyle – returning to full-time work,takingfamilyvacations,havingguestscometovisit–owners need to have a plan to introduce these changes to theirfurryfriends Ownersmightnoticebehavioralchanges in their cats, such as an increase in the need for attention, hidingordoordartingwhennewpeoplecomeinthehouse and a decrease or increase in appetite caused by the stress of schedule changes by their humans. All of these behaviors are normal but as responsible pet owners, we need to be more alert to what our pet is telling us and help them adjust to a new normal, just as we are having to do Again, Cat Care Society is a resource for any behavioral questions

While the stay-at-home orders were great for adoptions and finding furrever homes for hundreds of cats, it was not as easy for those still waiting in the shelter Over the past year we had to significantly rearrange and reduce our volunteer support and closed the shelter to visitors without ascheduledappointment Theseconstraintsresultedin

less human contact and interactions, that critical daily one-on-one attention, that our cats need and crave. The CCS board of directors and staff are working on a safe andsmart reopening plan that will comply with CDC, city and state guidelines Watch our website and social media sites for new public visitation hours and please come back to visit and help us love and play with our cats.

We are continually working on plans for our 2021 event calendar and are excited to share a few teasers about what lies ahead We are happy to announce that Catty Hour and Yoga have returned, virtually for now, but we hope to move to an in-person/virtual combined model along with outside activities and rotating indoor visits by June We will again be celebrating “Pride Fest” through the month of June In addition to participating in the “Pride Fest” sponsored online store, we will have our own raffle including a beautiful handmade quilt and several cat themed baskets. Saving the best update for last, we are excited to announce the biggest celebration at Cat Care Society in forty years – OUR FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY is in July You have been seeing a few teasers of what is comingandIamnotgoingtospillallthebeans,butitwill be a party that you will not want to miss We are working on a historical display of cats, volunteers, adopters, and pictures which will be open for viewing on July 1. You will be able to purchase commemorative t-shirts, hats, bumper stickers and even some personalized sweet treats, all benefitting the work that we do every day at theshelter

The summer’s celebratory activity will culminate in the Tails of the Painted Cats event on Saturday, September 11, 2021 The artists have outdone themselves and I will let you in on a little secret for this year – there are dogstoo!Ticketsareavailablenow,justvisitthewebsite Events page to purchase and get a sneak peek of the artwork

LETS TALK ABOUT BLACK CATS

Did you know that genetically, cats are born with only two colors black and/or red? All other coat types are variations of the two, even white cats Other genes change the appearance of a cat’s fur patterns and coloration But genetically, cats are either red, black, or a combination of the two

According to recent data, there are more black cats than any other color because of this “black” gene According to scientists, the genetic mutation that causes a cat’s fur to be black also could protect them from certain diseases

There is a common belief that black cats are the least likely to get adopted in animal shelters and rescue facilities across the U S However, the data actually proves that while more black cats are entering shelters than other cat colors, an equally large number of them are being adopted

Over the centuries these dark, handsome felines have endured the stigma of cultural and historical myths, superstitions, and tales The black cat bias does still persist to this day In a recent study psychologists examined this bias and came up with the following reasons people still shy away from black cat adoptions:

Superstition – Black cats symbolize bad luck, associations with witchcraft or evil

Black cats are also seen as less friendly, less playful and more aggressive People feel they cannot read the emotions of black cats as well as other cats and therefore think they are less approachable

Black cats may be more difficult to photograph, making it harder to showcase them for adoptions

Black cats have long been associated with witches and witchcraft. The story began when a black cat was seen running into a house thought to be inhabited by a witch During the Middle Ages, black cats became equated with black magic Roaming nocturnal black cats were thought to be witches in disguise, witches' pets, or animal-shaped demons sent by witches to spy on humans.

Black cats have evolved into icons of anything related to witchcraft, especially during the Halloween season It’s considered bad luck if a black cat crosses your path

Black cats are also believed to bring good luck too In ancient Egypt, black cats were held in the highest esteem because they resembled Bastet, the cat-headed Egyptian goddess of home, fertility, and protection from disease. Black cats are considered good luck in other parts of the globe as well

At Cat Care, we combat all these obstacles We have a skilled photographer who creatively showcases our adoptable black cats. We create bios that highlight their wonderful personalities. Our foster volunteers socialize all our cats and kittens to help them become great companions

We ca ats ve utiful, intelligent and loving personalities, just as we love all our cats and kittens

In fact, from January 2 1, we took in 196 black cats, both kittens and adults of all ages Of that 196, 167 of them now have been adopted to forever homes The majority of the remaining black cats are either in foster or medical care. That’s an 87% adoption rate!

All cats, no matter the color of their fur, need forever families to love and cherish them At the end of the day, the best reason to adopt a black cat is that they are just like every other cat. Some are sweet, some are sassy. Some are lap cats, some like to sit and watch the action. Each will have its own unique personality and temperament Just like every other cat, black cats deserve a chance to be cared for and loved

SUE SIOUX'S 20TH BIRTHDAY COMMEMORATIVE PORTRAITS

TAILS OF THE PAINTED CATS

Cat Care Society is planning to host the 2021 biennial Tails of the Painted Cats on September 11th at the Wellshire Event Center in Denver We are sincerely hoping that, with Covid restrictions beginning to ease, by September we will be able to stage a reasonably normal event We expect tickets to go on sale mid-May, with more details to come soon.

We have 32 cats and dogs this year, and they are preparing for their summer tour The first appearance will be at the Lakewood Arts Council Gallery at 6731 West Colfax Avenue, next to Casa Bonita This show will run May 2-27, and they are open 11-5 Wednesday through Sunday

During the months of June and July, the menagerie can be viewed at the Corner Gallery, Lakewood Cultural Center

Center at 470 South Allison Parkway. At this time, a reservationwillberequiredtovisit,butthatmaychange as we get closer. Both of these locations will also exhibit the Flat Cat canvases. From there, we are planning to travel up to Evergreen for a mountain experience at the Evergreen Gallery on Main Street in August. THE CAT THAT WASN'T WANTED

2019, a father and his college age daughter were in the Cat Care Society lobby to relinquish a cat She had been abandoned by the daughter’s roommate and had been spending her days and nnights ights in a furnace room with just a litter box and dry cat food The veterinary technician on duty immediately accepted the cat, no questions asked Once the cat was in our care, tears of joy began to flow because the team knew that this cat might not make it in another shelter setting. She was morbidly obese, would need a strict diet and serious medical attention to get her back to an acceptableweightandgoodhealth

It seemed appropriate that a cat relinquished on a warm summer day be named Lavender – and so began her journey

Lavender was placed in a foster home for strict management of her weight. Her foster dad was diligent in her weight loss program, following the dietary restrictions and including a workout regimen, with lots of short, active play throughout the day Slowly the scales began to tip in therightdirectionandtheweightbegantocomeoff

In mid-September, Lavender’s foster dad was transferred out of town and she came back to the shelter She went into a private room to manage her weight and she immediately became a staff and volunteer favorite She was the most gentle, amicable, easygoing, kind hearted, calm cat you could imagine. With all these special d as a Cat Care Society

ambassador She went to Community Shares campaign rallies,nursinghomes,schools and hospitals, and she was even the star attraction at the 2019 Snow Cat Convention.

“MoShow: the Cat Rapper” took her on stage and she calmly hung out while being danced around in front of hundreds of cheering and singingspectators

After her travels around town, her star quality created a lot of buzz and interest from potential adopters. However, she had already stolen two hearts, my husband’sandmine!Ibroughthomethebigblackcaton Friday, December 13, 2019, which my luckyday!

She was loud, noisy, needy, de ays trying to convince us that she was was also yfulandloya !
