HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE



The ABE Academy (ABE Academy) is a literacy-based vocational training program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Instruction is offered in reading, writing, math, oral and written communication, and technology, according to the North Carolina Adult Education Standards. The ABE Academy offers consistent and intensive contextualized classroom instruction which meets these requirements with a focus on career exploration and workforce preparation. Students enrolled in the ABE Academy will share a common goal of transitioning into the workforce or additional educational programs. All students enrolled in the ABE Academy have the right to a positive learning environment where they may achieve their educational goals.

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY: This program is for adults age 17 and older who meet specific enrollment criteria. According to their level of ability, students are placed in groups with qualified instructors. Instruction is provided in an innovative classroom setting and all textbooks and work books are provided. Students also work on computers to improve their problem-solving and job preparation skills.
HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY (HSE)
CVCC’s High School Equivalency (HSE) program prepares students to pass standardized equivalency tests such as the GED and HiSET.
HSE classes are free and available to students 16 or older. A permission form is required for students 16 and 17.
Students enrolled in HSE prepare for the equivalency tests in the classroom and/or online. In-person basic math, algebra, and English classes are available.
ADULT HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA (AHS)
Adult High School (AHS) is a free program, available to students 16 and older, to complete the courses not finished in traditional high school. A permission form is required for students 16 and 17.
Courses are entirely online, so you can work at your own pace from home or in our computer lab.
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
Students in ESL improve their English skills in listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. These classes are free to anyone 16 and older. A permission form is required for students 16 and 17.
CAREER PATHWAYS
Students enrolled in the ABE Academy, HSE, AHS and ESL programs who meet specific criteria will have opportunities to enroll in classes which focus on workplace skills as well as short-term certificates and credentialing programs.
Some of those programs include Manufacturing, Early Childhood Development, Furniture, and Hospitality.
