SUMMER PROGRAMS FOR AGES 6-17
Adobe Illustrator
Ages 10-14
Adobe Illustrator is an application used by both artists and graphic designers to create vector illustrations, infographics, logos, characters, and more! After becoming familiar with the illustrator’s user interface and tools, students will have the opportunity to learn how simple it is to create complex graphics using the powerful features of the software. Challenges and projects will allow students to apply their knowledge and create everything from gorgeous web and mobile graphics to logos, icons, book illustrations, product packaging, and billboards.
Adobe Photoshop
Ages 10-14
Adobe Photoshop is the industry-standard image manipulation software for creative professionals in print, photography, web, or multimedia. This class covers the workspace, tools, basic image corrections and adjustments, manipulation, and masking techniques available in Photoshop. This course will also discuss image formats, resolution, professional imaging workflows, and essential foundational skills of image manipulation.
An Eye for Photography
Ages 10-14
Capture moments, edit photos, and share them with the world! Photography is a hobby that can last a lifetime—and it holds exciting career possibilities, too. Take photos in-studio and on-location. Afterwards, use Adobe Photoshop to edit your work, build your portfolio, and explore photography concepts alongside a passionate instructor.
App Attack!
Ages 10-14
Have you ever dreamed of building your own app, just like the ones you’ve seen on the App Store? Learn the basics of designing a mobile app, from the initial idea, to wireframes, to user-interface design. This class will focus on the iOS platform, but students will also lean some tips and tricks on adapting the design for platforms like Android and Windows. This class is the perfect launching point for students who are eager to learn about app design, receive a first-hand look the world of App publishing, and wish to make a change in their communities and world.
Art Detective
Ages 8-12
Journey through history as we explore the times and techniques of multiple artists while working as art detectives. Delve into the works of the masters, learning to distinguish authentic pieces from clever fakes. Each day, students will also receive time to create their own artwork inspired by these famous artists. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your creative talents and appreciate the beauty of art—please dress ready to have fun and get messy!
Art Media of Your Choice
Ages 8-14
Join us as we learn artistic ways of combining paint to create magnificent and unique works of art. Bring your imagination and creativity to life! You will learn how to build your painting background and use various mediums such as acrylics, watercolor, and art pens. A supply list will be available prior to the first day of camp.
Art of Anime
Ages 8-14
Anime is a style of art used by the Japanese, often identified by the “cartoonish”, exaggerates features of anime characters. Come explore this artistic style and technique, develop your own characters, and draw anime figures. A full supply list will be mailed prior to class.
ArtRazeous!
Ages 8-14
Students will learn the basics of portrait art, how to draw their favorite animals with colored pencils, and landscape art techniques. Beginning drawing techniques and how to use pencils and colored pencils will be introduced. A supply list will be available prior to the first day of camp.
Babysitting 101
Ages 12-16
CVCC has joined with Catawba Valley Medical Center and the Safe Kids Program in hosting a Babysitting 101 camp. This camp will prepare students for the responsibilities of babysitting. This course covers the basics of babysitting, home safety, age-appropriate games and toys, and tips for preventing common childcare problems. By the end of the class, students will receive certifications in ARC Pediatric First Aid and Child/Infant/AED. Students need to bring a baby doll and baby blanket or small towel to first class session. Due to the certification rules, students must be 12 years of age or older to attend.
Back to School Hullabaloo
Ages 6-12
Get revved up for a GREAT upcoming school year! Two highlyskilled, widely-experienced veteran teachers will review concepts of math, reading, and writing. Students will receive strong reviews to help them build a better foundation for learning. At the conclusion of the class, students should have a positive platform to face any adventure the new school year brings.
Beauty Bootcamp
Ages 8-12
This class is perfect for students who are new to doing their own makeup, hair and nails. From practicing braids and heatless hairstyles, learning simple skills on enhancing natural beauty, to experiencing a spa day with facials and manicures. Most of all, they will learn beauty tips to help them look and feel their best while also building confidence. We will complete the week with a mini-photoshoot party showcasing all things beauty, inside and out!
Cartooning
Ages 8-14
Draw your favorite cartoon character or create a new one using your imagination. Pencil, ink, and various color media are used for accent and enhancement. Come with an open mind and be creative. No art skill is required. A supply list will be available prior to the first day of camp.
Create Your Own Coloring Book
Ages 6-10
Unlock your creativity and dive into the delightful world of personalized arts & crafts! Whether you’re an aspiring artist, a coloring enthusiast, or just looking for a unique way to unwind, this is the perfect blend of instruction and inspiration. At the end of the class, you will have crafted your very own coloring book.
Creative Jewelry Making for Kids
Ages 9-12
Make your own earrings, necklaces and pendants in this creative jewelry making class! We will use colorful stone beads, a variety of designs, and even create a photo pendant! Siblings are encouraged! Everyone will leave with a brand-new set of jewelry to wear as a lovely conversational piece or give away as gifts!
Crocheting Washclothes
Ages 9-14
Learn how to make washcloths, potholders, and trivets using the Tunisian Simple Stitch.
CSI-Crime Scene Investigation
Ages 10-14
Have you ever wanted to be a CSI Detective and learn about forensics? Have you ever wanted to “work a crime scene?” Use the knowledge and skills you learn during this class to solve the case. During this class, we will talk about fingerprints, DNA, hair, fiber and more! You will have fun learning lab work, Crime Scene memory and even an Escape room! A crime scene will tell you what happened, and the evidence will never lie.
CyberGirl Summer Camp
Ages 12-16
Join the CyberGirl Summer Camp for an exhilarating 4-day journey into the world of cybersecurity, tailored just for middle school girls! Unleash your potential as you learn to crack codes, protect digital realms, and outsmart cyber challenges. Discover the power of teamwork and innovation in a fun, supportive environment with expert mentors. No prior experience needed–just bring your curiosity and get ready to show the boys how it’s done. Step into your tech-savvy superhero self and be part of a thrilling adventure that celebrates girl power in technology!
Design XD
Ages 14-18
Design XD is a two-week, summer design workshop sponsored by the Advertising and Graphic Design program at CVCC. Design XD participants are introduced to design thinking and visual problem solving in the world around us. During this twoweek workshop, students are introduced to creative problem solving, foundations of good design, and how to execute both analog and digital designs into real world applications. Students will conceptualize and develop solutions to projects— including physical and digital prototypes. Upon completion of the camp, students will have a great understanding of the CVCC Advertising and Graphic Design program as well as exposure to several Adobe Creative Suite software applications such as Photoshop and Illustrator. Students will also learn about the study of graphic design and the various careers possible in the field.
Digital Audio Storytelling
Ages 10-14
Ever wanted to hear your story “on air”? Develop and write your own original piece, record it, and add the perfect sound effects to enhance your tale. Students will also practice writing and interviewing, voiceover techniques, and learn how to add digital music and sound to an audio recording.
Drawing Cartoons in the Wonderful World of Adobe
Ages 10-14
Discover Adobe Illustrator and learn the tools to create fun, colorful images! Students will be introduced to the Adobe workspace, shape-creating tools, and additional options for adding color and text. Also discover how to work with layers, the Illustrator pen tool, and other tricks to enhance your original artwork.
Digital Scrapbooking
Ages 10-14
We’ll help you craft a digital scrapbook that preserves your memories forever! Learn to use digital cameras, scanners, PowerPoint, and photo editing software to produce these oneof-a-kind scrapbooks. Students can bring in and scan their favorite photos of themselves, friends, and family, along with important certificates, awards, medals, ribbons, or newspaper articles.
Exploring Embroidery
Ages 9-12
This camp will allow kids to learn basic embroidery and strengthen their fine motor skills. The kids will learn different stitch types and create their own embroidery patterns. At the
end of each week the kids will get to take their creations home to shoew their friends and families.
Exploring Printmaking
Ages 6-12
Explore the concepts of printmaking utilizing a variety of everyday objects. Through experienced instruction, students will develop fun techniques to create frameable art, design greeting cards, and decorate their own tote bags.
Express Yourself Through Art Journaling
Ages 9-12
Kickstart your week creating your own art journal, then continue exploring different art mediums and creative ways to express yourself through art! Continue to add new designs to your journal during the week.
Fabulous Cupcakes
Ages 8-12
Baking and decorating basics—we will use cake mixes and make homemade buttercream icing, decorate with piping bags and use a variety of tips. New cupcake ideas are used to create everyday and freestyle to use your imagination in a cupcake creation.
Graphic Design
Ages 10-14
Have you ever wanted to develop a personal logo, produce a magazine cover, or create a poster? Graphic design is a complex, rewarding art form that involves several different skills, tools, and theories. Explore the building blocks of graphic design, including shape, color, layout, and typography, and work on real-live design projects to put your knowledge to the test. You might be surprised that most of the world revolves around design!
Gravity Games
Ages 6-10
This engaging, interactive course introduces young learners to the fundamental principles of physics. Through hands-on experiments, demonstrations, and activities, students will dive into topics such as motion, energy, forces, and simple machines, all while fostering a love of science and critical thinking! This will be a week discovery and exploration in the exciting world of physics!
Learning with Legos
Ages 6-12
Students will be involved in a wonderful adventure using LEGO® blocks and books in this class. They will be learning while putting together fun and exciting projects with LEGO’s®. This class will be entertaining and educational! Writing, vocabulary, details, comprehension, and higher order thinking skills will be covered in innovative ways!
Let’s Party!
Ages 8-12
In this fun and imaginative class, campers will learn how to throw their own party! It could be a birthday party, beach party, ice cream party, or a barbeque for the family… whatever they want! Campers will learn how to design invitations, make their own party favors, stickers, as well as create and design their own custom coloring books. Come and join the fun and let’s party!
Microsoft Office for Students
Ages 10-14
Learn to create, publish, and excel with words! Students will explore the fundamentals of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Spend a week at our “spa” for some much-needed relaxation and self-care! Learn how to create your own natural spa treatments. From soothing face masks to luxurious hand cream, you’ll discover how to pamper yourself from head-to-toe. Plus, explore the deeper value of inner beauty and how to feel confident both inside and out. Be ready to indulge in well-deserved spa days and start your journey to a more radiant you!
Nature Journaling—Eco Art
Ages 6-12
Nature journaling is a fun and creative way to connect with the natural world around us. We’ll cover techniques for sketching plants and animals and develop a deeper appreciation for the passing of the seasons. Journaling sketchbook and drawing pencils will be provided. Release your inner naturalist in this laid-back and inspiring environment!

Sewing for Beginners
Ages 8-14
Come join us in the sewing room for an introduction to sewing machine basics, hand sewing techniques, hemming, and mending, buttons, pattern reading, and fabric choices. Use your creativity to make some simple projects such as a tote bag, pin cushion, and tissue holder. Sewing machines are provided. A supply list will be available prior to the first day of camp.
Shutterbugs for Kids
Ages 6-10
Little ones can explore their world with a camera! Shutterbug students will be encouraged to express their creativity and share how they see the world through their own unique lens. Engage in photo scavenger hunts, learn about light and composition, explore perspectives like “worm’s eye view” and “bird’s eye view”, and make prints in a take-home Shutterbug book!
Soccer Camp
Ages 8-12
Under the direction of Olivia Beane, Soccer player at Queens University in Charlotte, aspiring soccer players will learn and develop basic soccer skills.
Stained Glass Mosaics
Ages 10-14
Come join the fun for a beginner’s-Stained Glass Mosaic camp. We will learn to cut stained glass and how to use glass tools safely. Then we will build a mosaic style framed picture and a suncatcher. Expect to make at least two beautiful stained-glass items for using it as your personal keepsakes or giving it as a gift. This camp will start you on the road of learning the art of stained glass! Most supplies are included.
Summerscapes Newsletter
Ages 8-14
Design and publish our 2024 weekly newsletter! Students will be assigned roles of photographers, journalists, copy editors, layout and creative, production, editors, and
publishers. Campers will produce a newsletter to be distributed on the last day of camp each week.
Summer School with the Wizards
Ages 8-14
Embark in Wizard training in reading, writing, math, and poetry! We will also make potions, magic wands, paper airplanes, and more. Discover your Wizarding talents with us!
Using a Cricut Machine
Ages 9-14
Come and enjoy this fun-filled class using your Cricut® machine! Whether you are new to Cricut® or you have some experience, our instructor will walk you through installing the machine, using a Cricut® mat, and creating your own designs for a variety of projects.
Volleyball Camp Beg
Ages 8-12
This beginners camp lets aspiring volleyball athletes learn the basics of volleyball by proacticing serving, passing, court movement, and ball control. Come ready to play dressed in your athletic/comfortabel apparel. Athletic shoes, knee pads and water bottle recommended.

Ages 13-16
This all-skills advanced camp lets aspiring volleyball athletes practice serving, passing, court movement, and ball control. Come ready to play dressed in your athletic/ comfortable apparel. Athletic shoes, knee pads and water bottle recommended.
Watercolors
Ages 10-14
Students will get creative with the tools and techniques of traditional watercolor! The class will also share alternative processes to create dynamic, mixed-media artworks.
Website Design
Ages 10-14
Students will learn all about designing and building a website and have a chance to create their own web pages using both HTML and Adobe Muse. Students won’t need any prior web design or coding experience—we teach all web design skills from the ground up.

A Word About Waiting to Enroll:
Every class has a minimum required enrollment. If this minimum is not met prior to the starting date, the class will be canceled. If you find a class you like, encourage a friend to join too. Sometimes two or three people make the difference between “go” and “cancel.”
Refund Policy
Our instructors are paid for fees collected so we must guarantee a minimum enrollment to schedule a class. If it becomes necessary for you to withdraw from a class, please contact Cheri Toney at 828.327.7000, Ext. 4320 or email her at ctoney@cvcc.edu at least the day before the camp begins.
NO REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN FOR CAMPS AFTER THE CAMP BEGINS.
Schedule Changes
The information in this brochure is based on conditions at the time of printing and is subject to change. Classes may be canceled and/or locations may be changed at the discretion of the Summerscapes program administration.
Sign-in Procedures
For safety precautions, a parent/guardian must check your child/children in and check out of all Summerscapes classes each day. Check-in begins no sooner than lO minutes prior to your child’s class. NO CHILDREN MAY BE LEFT UNATTENDED.
