Women’s group focuses on supporting local charities Soroptimist International (SI) Peterborough... It might not be a name you recognise, but for 70 years the local women’s group has been supporting projects and charities that help improve the lives of women and girls.

Part of a global volunteer movement, SI Peterborough is made up of 17 Peterborough women with one common aim: to make a difference to the lives of women and girls – locally, nationally and internationally - through enablement, empowerment and education.

SI Peterborough President, Jessica Barton, said: “While we support international causes, we like to focus on helping local initiatives and charities.

“For instance, at the beginning of lockdown, we held a virtual quiz to raise money for The Light Project’s Homeless Coronavirus Emergency Appeal.

“Other organisations we support are Early Essentials, which provides essential newborn baby items to local women in need, and Peterborough’s Women Aid.” Being a member of SI Peterborough is a great way to make friends with like-minded women and have fun while working on projects that help make a difference to women and girls.

Jessica added: “Since our fundraising plans have been delayed due to Covid-19, we are focusing our efforts on supporting local charities through item donations and continuing to advocate for gender equality.

“We meet via Zoom on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 7:30pm for social evenings and to hear from inspiring speakers that share our values.”

PE Magazines - PE1 A young photographer has used her university project, titled “Maybe if you understood”, as an opportunity to raise awareness of autism, documenting the life of her younger sister, who has high-functioning autism.

Evie Scarborough fell in love with photography during the photography course she studied at A-Level at New College Stamford.

At the end of her course, she chose to continue her studies as a Foundation Degree at University Centre Stamford, and as part of her portfolio during her degree, she completed a project titled “Maybe if you understood”, documenting and exploring the life of her younger sister, Isla.

Isla has high-functioning autism, an autism classification where the patient shows no intellectual disability, but may struggle to communicate and recgonise emotions.

They may also find difficulties with social interaction.

The aim of Evie’s project was to challenge people’s pre-conceptions over autism as not many people are aware of the size of the autistic spectrum.

One in 100 people are actually on the autistic spectrum and there are around 700,000 autistic adults and children in the UK. Isla has high-functioning autism which often means that people she first meets are not aware that she has autism, as she can often force herself to come across as composed in everyday situations even though

she may be really struggling deep down.

Over the course of Evie’s carefully documented project, she spent each and every day with her little sister, photographing her daily routines and her quirks.

Evie told us: “In one of my favourite images from the project, Isla can be seen gazing out of the window of our porch. Isla spends a lot of time indoors as she gets extremely anxious leaving the house. This is because she is aware that she is different from everyone else.

“Indoors, she spends a lot of her time painting and writing. In a poem that Isla wrote, she expressed her own frustration with the words ‘Maybe if you understood’

which I include in the main body of work, this then became the title of the project.”

Do you have a musical talent that you would like to share with people across the city? You could be Peterborough’s Most Wanted!

If you have a musical ability, and you would like to be heard across the whole of Peterborough, we have found a great local opportunity that you could get involved in.

Every Monday night from 7pm to 9pm on Peterborough Community Radio (PCRFM) 103.2, David and James host their radio show Peterborough’s Most Wanted, where they look for local talent.

They offer challenges and games to their participating listeners, and you can become involved throughout the whole show, showing off what you can do and making yourself known.

To be involved and to showcase your talents, you can contact their team via their Facebook page or find out more on their website www.peterboroughsmostwanted. co.uk.

If you are selected, you will be contacted by the station, and preparation can begin up to four weeks before the show.

The team will call you while they’re live on air to give you two song options to choose from. You can either pick one of these or choose their “wildcard song�, which you

then have to stick with.

You then spend the next few weeks learning and practicing this song, completely in your own style, they call this the Your Way Challenge. You then get to perform this live on the show.

There are many other games and challenges that you can get involved in whilst the show is live. One of these is called the 5 Second Challenge.

The team will give their participating listener 1m30s to get as many of these questions right as possible. The team will say “name 3 (of something)�, and the listener has five seconds to name three things in that category.

This challenge is usually at the beginning of

the show, as it is a great ice-breaker and is usually quite funny.

Other listeners have the opportunity to prepare and perform songs on the radio show too. The whole show is Live Streamed and posted on their Facebook page.

The show is also recorded and put on MixCloud, so that anyone can listen as many times as they wish.

Songs performed by guests are also recorded seperately, and they are given a link to access their song.

The radio show is great fun, with a relaxed atmosphere, and the Most Wanted team are on hand to put guests at ease and be themselves. You can take a friend or family member with you too if you wish.

Matt and Roy’s new era at vehicle sales centre Matthew and Roy at MR Vehicle Sales have accumulated 50 years experience working in the automotive industry. Now in 2020, their passion for cars has brought them both together to do what they love.

MR Vehicle Sales was previously known as Kingfisher Cars, which took on Roy and Matthew back in 1996.

The pair have now taken over and renamed the business and in their first few weeks have already increased their warranty period for all vehicles purchased from the standard three months to six.

Ian’s dream takes him from Peterborough to Piccadilly Ian McIntosh dreamt as a child of designing football kits and would sit and draw kits for teams from the age of eight. But he had no idea how far his dreams would take him...

In 2012 Ian took his first steps into the world of business by opening his Maccasports shop in Bretton.

Originally the shop sold mainly football boots and equipment but before long Ian had started working with various brands to sell kits and tracksuits.

But Ian had never forgotten his early passion for designing football kits and soon he began creating items under his own brand Macca.

In 2016, Ian decided to take the step of going it alone and he launched his own company Macca Premium Apparel, enabling him to indulge the passion he had for designing football kits as a child.

And it was that childhood hobby which inspired Ian to share his passion to help others during lockdown.

As many childen struggled with the effects of school closures and not being able to see their friends, Ian ran a campaign encouraging young people to come up with their own designs for a football kit as a way of helping them cope.

Ian said: “Personally I was overwhelmed with the response to the initiative.

“The feedback and messages that I received from children and their parents showed me that this had made a huge impact on them, and helped to keep them in good spirits.

“When they received the shirt they had designed they where so happy.”

As well as the initiative, Ian has been very busy growing his custom apparel brand, which prides itself on creating any design in any colour the customer wants. Customers can also provide their own designs.

The business has already attracted clients from all over the world and Ian has travelled to Bermuda, Pakistan and Moldove, as well as providing kits for clubs in the USA. But one of the projects Ian is most proud of was a recent collaboration with Piccadilly FC, which incorporated the design from the Piccadilly mainline seats.

Both the football club and the museum were delighted with the kit they recieved and have since been selling their shirts all over the world.

Ian added: “The future for us at Macca Premium Apparel is to keep growing, and we are now in the process of moving to a new, bigger unit in Aston Business park in Woodston, and we are looking to keep expanding all over the world.”

Sid and Deb are on a mission to enrich their community Prodigal Collective is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company which officially began in October 2019. Set up by Deb Bridges and her husband Sid, inspiration to create their own business came after Sid left his role as a vicar in the Church of England.

At that point, Deb had been a full-time mum for the past fifteen years but with seven children now all at school/playgroup, both she and Sid felt a desire to re-imagine life and create something that would enrich the community around them.

Based in The Ortons but working across Peterborough, Deb and Sid’s aim is to journey with people through their experiences of life and death, reconnecting them to themselves, each other and to that sense of something more.

Their intention is to increase spiritual and mental health within the community.

They do this in a variety of ways – offering professional celebrant led occasions, taking funerals, wedding and naming ceremonies which allow them to connect with the community and offer support at significant moments in life.

Deb said: “We offer coaching and counselling, providing support when it’s needed.

Deb added: “It is our belief that through belonging, conversation and opportunities to give back to community, we can all thrive.”

“We work in schools with children struggling with low self-esteem, anxiety or those facing times of significant transition as well as with those in the community who would benefit from some extra encouragement.”

Deb and Sid also run a variety of events throughout the year, looking to bring people together and allow everyone to celebrate life as community.

They aim to host barbecues, beach trips or family walks and events at local venues to which individuals and families can come and share life, support and encourage each other.

They would also like to create a monthly café style gathering, where people can come and belong and find space to think and reflect.

“Our threefold vision of ceremonies, coaching and connection has, like many businesses, had to be adapted in recent months.

“We gained funding for and employed a bereavement nurse to offer support to those we meet through our funeral ceremonies, which has become the main focus of our work as the weddings we had booked have had to be postponed.

“Our opportunities to connect with each other moved to our Zoom Room and the coaching element of the work took the form of regular blogs to enable people to explore their emotions during this time.”

An introduction to Geocaching What is Geochaching?

Geocaching is an outdoor family friendly activity, in which participants use a mobile app or a Global Positioning system and other mapping and navigating techniques to find and hide small containers called “geocaches” or “caches”, at different locations marked by coordinates all over the world.

How do I play?

You download the ‘Geocaching’ app on your mobile’s app store / play store, and follow the instructions to set yourself up. You can then go ahead and start searching for Geocaches that are local to you.

Where has it come from?

Geocaching has been played for around 20 years and started in the US State Oregon. It can best be described as a game of hide and seek with different containers and objects to find, maybe more local to you than you’d expect!

Grandfather sets a stairs challenge to raise cash for hospice A grandfather has completed a mountainous lockdown challenge to help a cause close to his heart.

When lockdown began, Francis Hughes was worried that fundraising events for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall hospice were being cancelled due to the pandemic, so set about doing his bit to keep the money rolling in.

Francis decided he was going to climb some of the British Isles highest peaks – or the equivalent height – to raise money for the hospice which had cared for his wife in 2003.

And that’s exactly what he did - scaling the stairs of his home in Orton Waterville a total of 3,527 times - eventually climbing more than the 8,848m height of Everest.

Donations to the emergency appeal Francis launched on his JustGiving page (www.justgiving.com/fundraising/francis-hughes3) have now totalled £1850.

Francis told PE Magazines “My wife received great care from Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice in 2003, so I know the tremendous work they do.

“To help the hospice out by raising some money during lockdown, I decided to climb my stairs enough times to match the equivalent height of peaks in the British Isles, including Snowdon, Helvellyn, Carrantouhil and Ben Nevis.

“With the latter completed in September, it took me over the 8848m of Everest and much of it I did in my slippers! I have ascended (and descended) my stairs 3,527 times.”

After Ben Lomond in mid-May, Francis fractured his foot in a fall in local woods, so he had to suspend the “climbs” until the end of July.

Francis also took the opportunity during lockdown to promise his grandchildren he would dye his beard rainbow colours.

At the start of lockdown he promised the seven and eight year olds he would let his beard grow and continue to do so until they were next allowed to stay over.

When hairdressers reopened at the start of July, the two were excited for Francis to keep his rainbow promise, but unfortunately the salon was unable to dye beards and instead Francis settled for rainbows in his hair above his ears.

Can you help to create new community garden?

Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) has been challenged by social enterprise Up The Garden Bath, and you could get involved...

The social enterprise project ‘Up The Garden Bath’ has challenged the environmental charity PECT to transform an underused area of green space in the west of Peterborough into a new garden.

The aim is to create a multi-use area that can be used to grow produce, host educational workshops, and attract wildlife.

The plan is for the new garden area to include innovative vertical planters to make the most of the available space.

There will also be bathtub planters to create growing areas at a height that is easily accessible for all volunteers and children.

Stuart Dawks, Director of Operations at PECT, said: “We really want to demonstrate how unwanted materials can be given a new lease of life and become useful, rather than just being discarded and sent to landfill.

“We also want to create a community growing area that shows how everyone can create a garden with just the smallest of budgets.”

PECT is a grassroots organisation that educates, inspires, and motivates individuals and organisations to change their behaviour to deliver a positive environmental impact.

The charity specialises in using eco education and awareness-raising to encourage behaviour change and collective action.

ADVERTISING FEATURE

Tap into the retro trend When creating a stand-out master bathroom, we love to look beyond the typical white suite and inject some personality into the space. Recent projects have been inspired by the “retro” trend, which takes products and tiles from an era gone-by and reinvents them for the 21st century.

But before anyone starts installing Artex ceilings or avocado bathroom suites, we stress that this is a style that must be well executed.

In order to create an eclectic feel, we like to mix patterned tiles with elegant, simplistic fittings. A retro, handleless vanity unit with a matching cabinet can form the basis for creating this look, allowing the floor and walls to take centre stage.

The tiles – which are a must for this trend – should be bold in colour or pattern, with two styles often being paired together. A hexagonal shape – which is bang on-trend for 2020 – would give another dimension to the room and add interest to the space.

MONOCHROME STYLING Or for a look that packs a punch, we would go for a 1930s monochrome design scheme.

Although very current, it’s a timeless combination – perfect for a bathroom, which is only updated every 10-15 years.

Black and white floor tiles create clean lines and strong angles, which work well in a functional space. Use white grout to give it a consistent finish.

The walls could then extend this monochrome feel – again, tiling the bottom half in white and painting the top part in a soft

colour. We would also add a trim of black tiles to act as a skirting board.

This would work well with chrome fittings and plants to soften the stark contrast between white and black. Choose greenery that doesn’t require much light and can withstand high levels of moisture – Aloe Vera and Bamboo are both good options.

CREATING A LUXURIOUS FINISH For a ‘wow’ factor, we help some clients to create the ’Great Gatsby’ look, with touches of gold across lighting, taps and accessories. This offers a luxurious style, and looks great paired with a dark grey or navy wall, which makes a real statement.

Wiring lights on different switches — or even being set on a dimmer — will also help to set a soft “moody” atmosphere for when relaxing in the bath. If the space allows, a freestanding unit will add to the luxurious environment, and you could even complete the look with ornate, gold feet.

A TIMELESS STATEMENT Retro styling is a timeless statement, that if well executed, will still be beautiful in years to come. It oozes a quality feel that we love in a bathroom, which creates more than just a place you bath or wash, but a space that you can also relax in and enjoy.

Do you want to live a healthier, happier life? An exciting healthy living movement has launched in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, helping you eat well, sleep well and move more.

Driven by the local NHS, BMI Can Do It has been developed specifically for local residents to support their journey towards a healthier lifestyle.

The movement is supported by an investment of up to ÂŁ1m by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and includes exciting healthy living challenges as well as a suite of resources to help you take practical steps towards a healthier life.

Dr Jessica Randall-Carrick, a local GP and lead for Obesity and Diabetes at the CCG, explains: “If you have a higher than recommended BMI then you are at a higher risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes, cancer, or having a stroke or heart attack. “We also know that you are at greater risk of serious health consequences if you contract COVID-19, which is why we want to help encourage people to join our movement to eat well, sleep well and move more.Â

“We know it’s not always easy, but by taking those first steps towards a healthier lifestyle will have a positive impact on your health. “That’s why we are asking everyone to say BMI Can Do It and get involved today!â€?Â

Age UK trial to help elderly through difďŹ cult times A new service offering additional support to the elderly has gone on trial in Peterborough.

Age UK have launched a six-month scheme which offers free help to people over 65 when they need it most; particularly when they are experiencing a difficult period, such as bereavement, ill health, financial worries or housing concerns.

Age UK will work with those who access the scheme to signpost them to appropriate services and support networks. The thoughts and wishes of the client will always be listened to and the charity will work with them to plan the desired outcomes.

The Age UK team will determine if the matters can be discussed over the telephone or if a home visit is more appropriate. Appointments can also be made to see staff and volunteers in various venues at their Community Hubs.

Jym Brown, a lecturer, writer and public speaker from Peterborough released his first book, #LIFE, last month on Amazon.

Many charities across the UK have suffered due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Research carried out by The Institute of Fundraising reports a 24 per cent reduction in total charitable income for the year, which equates to a ÂŁ12.4 billion loss overall. This impact can be felt around the country with 84 per cent of charities reporting a significant decrease in their income.

If not for the generosity of local businesses, a charity in Peterborough, Little Miracles, may not have survived the lockdown.

Little Miracles supports families who have children with additional needs, disabilities and life-limiting conditions across Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire.

They help over 9,000 families every year and hoped to continue providing their life-changing services throughout 2020.

When the lockdown was declared, Little Miracles was forced to furlough more than 50 per cent of its workforce. Their main centre in Peterborough, The Spinney, had to remain closed to minimise the risk of infection to the vulnerable children that use

Another local business, Chilterns Cold Storage Group Ltd, was able to assist with this problem by allowing Little Miracles to use their distribution centre to pack emergency food parcels to deliver to these families. the facilities.

This meant relying on the support from volunteers and local businesses to continue supporting Little Miracles users.

Perkins Engine Company Ltd, established in Peterborough in 1932, donated ÂŁ50,000 to Little Miracles to help them continue providing services to the families that rely on their support. Without such a generous donation, Little Miracles would no longer exist.

Whilst lockdown was in effect, many of Little Miracles families could not risk leaving their homes due to their child being considered vulnerable.

The majority of these families live in the bottom 10 per cent most deprived areas in the country so could not even afford to have food delivered to their homes.

Volunteers and Chilterns staff were able to get involved and managed to deliver more than 1,000 packages to families in need.

The added assistance from Chilterns has been greatly appreciated by all Little Miracles users, volunteers and staff as without Chilterns, they would not have been able to help so many people.

The coronavirus pandemic is set to increase demand for charitable services in the UK. Having survived the strain of the lockdown, Little Miracles will continue to offer their services with additional support from local people and businesses.

Sam’s health battle has inspired her to go into business “I was scared. Really scared. Surely, this couldn’t be the end?”

Sam Day is a mother of three and a successful local business owner. Graced with a whimsical humour, earnest confidence and positive outlook on life, she defies all that she has been through.

Yet, for the last eight years, this “warrior” has battled with fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and breast cancer.

Here, we share the story of an inspirational lady who ultimately refused to let illness rule her life.

“Since hitting my mid-thirties, my health started to decline,” explains Sam. “I caught every virus going from my family and I was constantly ill. At thirty-seven, I had a full hysterectomy in the hope it would help but my health continued to deteriorate.

“Eventually, I was diagnosed with post viral chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and sleep apnoea.”

After a lifetime of independence, Sam found that even the most basic of tasks were becoming increasingly exhausting, “Just taking a shower used up all of my energy and I spent a large chunk of my days alone, in pain, weak and very depressed.”

Sam was forced to relinquish some of the practical responsibilities involving her precious children as her husband took over.

Sustaining friendships became almost impossible as people abandoned her as they couldn’t fully comprehend the “silent” illness.

downhill again. At this point, Sam discovered something that every woman dreads, a large lump in her breast. The subsequent cancer diagnosis was to send shock waves through her tenacity, forcing her to endure the most frightening, painful and formidable journey of her life.

“I felt for my children and my husband who had to anxiously embark on yet another torrid journey of illness.” Sam lamented, “but this time I was scared. Really scared. Surely this wasn’t the end?”

After 12 long months of chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy, Sam was cancer-free but exhausted from the side-effects of treatment and the demands of life. Still, she wasn’t through the woods yet.

‘I was running errands, spending time with my children, cooking dinner and sleeping better, with no pain. My energy returned and my depression disappeared. This may sound extreme, but I promise you it’s true!”

With such a strong passion and belief in CBD and hemp, she wanted to share with the world the benefits that this natural product had given her. So, one more almighty leap of courage saw her launch her own business!

Sam now has much to look forward to. Her health has improved dramatically and her outlook is positive.

“It was as though life carried on without me and all seemed lost,” she remembered. “I grieved for the person I once was.”

“A very dear loved-one passed away. We were devastated. My husband was needed elsewhere, supporting others.” Sam willed herself to undertake caring duties, but admits “I was really struggling to cope and urgently needed to find some form of support.”

Her body’s limitations were challenging every moment of her days and nights and she had to learn how to manage the condition and to build up her strength to undertake even the most essential activities.

During the longer periods of time when Sam had been forced to rest so much of her day, she had turned to the computer, desperately searching for alternative health solutions and had come across CBD online.

“If someone had said to me three years ago that I would be running a new business, home-schooling one of my children and flying round the country meeting up with business people – I would have thought they were out of their mind – but this is me now! Sometimes I have to remind myself that even with CBD oil I still can’t do what I did in my twenties, but it’s a great feeling to know that I can live my life again!

Eventually, she managed to get some parttime work despite the exhaustion being overwhelming and debilitating. However, after three years, her health started to go
