Hi, my name is Catalina Ney, I’m a 22 year old architecture student and have reclenty finished my undergraduate degree receiving my dipolma on March 2024. . I was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, U.S.A.; but I am acually from Bogota, Colombia.

Throughout my childhood, I got the chance to live in several different countries due to my father’s job being involved in the oil business. Those countries were Argentina, Scotland, Brazil and the United States. I’ve lived in Colombia since 2011 so I practically did most of my school years there and my undergraduate degree of architecture at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Pontifical Xavierian University).

Traveling a lot as a kid and in my late teens have given me the chance to discover new types of environments, atmospheres and sceneries made by different architecture styles. The notion of getting to know a place by its architecture and art has always interested me and became one of the main reasons I have for studying it. One of the trips that also influenced me and convinced me of choosing architecture was a trip I did to Spain where I discovered Gaudi and his masterpieces, these grand projects made me aware of the creative power that architects have to generate spaces with unique experiences. Additionally I would consider myself as an observant person and in trips I’ve done to cities like New York and Chicago have made me conscious of how we can create big metropolitan cities but at the same time offer public spaces of high quality towards their citizens. I was also in france for a period of 6 months where I grew very interested in art and the aesthetics of cites.

Recently I’ve been getting very passionate of production design in cinema and theatre. I love how we can lend architecture to get involved in forms of storytelling to create diverse and fictional setting where one can explore human interactions and emotions. It shows the impact of architecture in the actions of a living being and how a story depends on its setting to be developed. In cinema and theatre one can explore any type of setting that a human can imagine from massive scaled fictional places to real intimate detailed spaces. This is one career paths that I would like to explore and learn more about in the future; others would be interior design for hospitality projects and historic building conservations.

Besides architecture other particular interest I have become very fond of are photography and art, I’ve always been drawn to different visual art forms and how they can express any aspect to understand humanity.

Community project for a specific problem in a community. The issue dealt with the lack of food resources an impoverished community from Bogotá Colombia.

The project is called the house of the seed. It consistes of a community center for selling, educating and producing food for the community.

Revolve the desing around a central plaza to access the building.

Create a building that adapts to the inclined terrain.

Have multiple ways to access the building and have a dynamic circulation.

The different levels help the users have new visuals and interractions with the territory.

Have a variety of scales in spaces for different purposes and experiences .

STORYTELLING AS A WAY TO GENERATE ARCHITECTURE. Using narrative architecture isnpired by Le Corbusier as a desing method to generate specific visual experiences for users.

Users become the characters that give life and purspose to each space.

The space impacts the way the users behave and interact.

At Congo Film School, located in Bogotá, Colombia. I participated in a short intensive program of set decoration. In this course In a group of four people we assigned to make the set for a 5 min long dramatic scene.

The scene was set in a fashion design studio where two girls which are a couple have have a tense discussion regarding their relationship. We were incharge of getting the required furniture pieces, placing details for close ups and ligtning pieces. We had a tight budget and time to get all the pieces and set the studio. This set was made in the duration of two days and a third for filming and wrapping the scene.

S e t R e i n t e r p r e t a t i o n M o d e l - M a l c o l m & M a r i e ( 2 0 2 1 )

For my set model I decided to make a reinterpretation of the script of Malcolm & Marie. A dramatic feature released in 2021 written and directed by Sam Levinson that narrates a simple yet complex discussion of a couple formed by a filmmaker (Malcolm) and his girlfriend (Marie). The plot is set by them entering the house after a premier event of one of Malcolm’s films which is inspired by the real life of Marie experience being an ex drug addict. The whole feature deals with the characters roaming the different spaces of the house and having different discussion and dramatic moments in each of them.

I was inspired by the idea of exaggerating the spaces as a way to display the voids that Malcolm and Marie have in their relationship that in this feature they explore and confront. I wanted to explore this balance between realistic and fictional spaces regarding the visuals that can be presented within the interactions of the characters with the immediate context.

Through my design process I first read the script and started higlight any annotation or movement regarding a character interraction with the spaces where dramatic moments would be held.

Later I started making mood board showing the type of materials and colors I would like the model to have to make the model.

To limit and test my productivity I decided to use a limited amount of materilas as a way to simulate the budget I would have to make my proposal.

I decided to make the model in a 1:100 scale in meters where i could make certain interioir details but also have a grand scale sense of the different spaces.

When completing the model I opted for adjusting some details in post production wth photo editing to complent the scenery and adding the characters to the scenes.
