Message from our President We have many New Members who have joined us in the past year and are probably wondering about our Nomination/Election process, so here is some background information about this process.

It is written into our Constitution that every two years our Board Members step down and we hope, new members volunteer to join the Board.

Every position on the Board is up for nomination and any member who is in good standing (up to date with Membership fees at the time of voting, which is held at our AGM) is eligible to put their name forward.

The present Board members all step down on the 30th June 2021 in accordance with our Constitution and the new Board is voted in at our AGM in June and officially takes over on the 1st July 2021.

Some members choose to only serve for 1 year, if that is the case, then we hold another round of nominations/elections again the following year for those positions that become available.

Every member who is nominated will be contacted by the Nomination/Election team, and all have the choice to accept or decline. There is no judgement in CIWOT, so if a member declines that is OK! We all lead busy lives and this might not be the right time for them to accept.

Every member nominated will be contacted regardless of whether more than one member has been nominated for the same position, then for example: if two or more are nominated and all say yes, it will then be put to the membership to vote on the one who they feel will be best for that position.

The outgoing Board offers all assistance to the incoming board so the new board does not feel overwhelmed by taking on these new responsibilities.

To assist the incoming board, budgets will have already been set for the following year, as well as some future dates for events to kick start the new season in September 2021.

Being on the Board or part of a team is a great way, especially for new members to really get to know how CIWOT works and to get to know other Members in CIWOT. I understand how difficult this is especially for our new members given the times and restrictions we are living with due to COVID. 2021-2022 hopefully will see CIWOT back out and about meeting up and holding events for our Members and Charities.

So I encourage all of you to send your nomination forms to our wonderful Team, Claire, Rosina and Barbara before the 30th April 2021 - Thank you!

I am an avid traveller. There is no country or destination that I would not travel to if the

Top of my bucket list is a journey that has sat there for many years due to cost or circumstances. I am about to change the situation. In 2022 I will undertake this journey after careful planning.

Nowadays it is not unheard of that tourists have made this trip to Mongolia, whether through agents or not, it can easily be done.

As usual I wish to make my own arrangements as this is part of the whole experience planning the details and learning about

I will take the Trans-Siberian Railway but leave it to join the Trans-Mongolian Railway to Ulaanbatar, Mongolia and travel for a week in this country.

It is a land and culture that has always fascinated me since I read the history of the Khan Empire.

My research has begun. I note to have 3 possible routes to take: 1. Trans- Siberian- Moscow to Vladivostok 2. Trans-Mongolian- Moscow/Beijing via Ulaanbatar 3. Trans- Manchurian- Siberia/ Manchuria/ Beijing It is my intention to combine 1/2 and plan the stop-over’s along the way. This is necessary due to ticket availability. These trains are also working trains bringing people across the country. They are not luxury tourist’s trains.

It is wise to select the appropriate cabin/compartment. And they come in 3 classes.

1st class are private with their own shower but cost more.

2nd class contain 4 bunks/beds. It is recommended to take the top bunk. It is possible to book the whole compartment.

3rd class is a common compartment and considered the safest but the noisiest and can get smelly [apparently] Again take the top bunk.

There is a list of advice given to read carefully.

It is essential to carry a full first aid kit. Doctors are only available at the stops.

Bring your own toilet paper.

Need a chain/rope of metal to keep luggage safe.

If I miss the train [only15/20 mins stop] I have to pay for a taxi to race to the next stop where I can get on board again.

In Mongolia there are presently no ATM machines.

You can be asked how much money you carry. It is necessary to tell the truth because if you get caught lying you can be fined or asked to leave the train. Bribery is also possible.

Avoid dealers that travel on the train.

Also watch your drinks as they can be spiked.

After reading this I thought why do I so want to do this.? The answer is simple for me I like the unusual and unexpected on my travels. Even though my research is thorough!

It will take months to complete the planning of this trip but my female travel companion and I share the task. We compromise sometimes ,disagree beforehand but always find our way around our “big” trips.

If you know anyone who has done this journey kindly let me know. The more information, guidance and stories the better.

A HOPEFUL PATH TOWARDS THE END OF ANIMAL ABUSE IN CYPRUS

There is a shadow that clouds our idyllic island of Cyprus: animal abuse.

Fortunately, there are many citizens aware that this situation must change, which led the Parliament last November 2020 to modify the current regulations on animal welfare.

The bill amends the Animal Welfare Law of 1994 strengthening, in particular, the protection for domesticated animals and introducing stiffer fines for abuse.

Good words for Great Souls

Penalties for animal abuse increase significantly, from €1.700 to €10.000 in case of PAGE 01 first conviction, and from €3.400 to €20.000 in case of second or later conviction.

Competent authorities are allowed to immediately seize an animal and entrust its care In memory of Father Smith to another suitable person, without long-term judicial proceedings.

It is forbidden to tie up a dog or cat, except in cases of temporary dog tie up in public space or during walking.

When you become aware that you suspect animal abuse, and depending on the severity of 05 the case then what you need to do first is direct complaints to the competentPAGE authorities, namely the Provincial Veterinary (animal welfare), the District Committee, or the Animal municipalities.

ABOUT

CIWOT CIWOT exists to help our local community, to help women become better leaders, strengthen individual talents, provide friendship and networking, thereby connecting women in their communities. We volunteer to raise money, donate time to local charities, offer courses to learn new skills and organize social events to get to know each other better, try new things and enjoy ourselves.

Who are we?

We are women from many countries and of all ages who are English-speaking and live in Cyprus, in or around Limassol. We have a Board of Directors and other officers who help organise CIWOT on a voluntary basis. We appoint the Board and officers every two years. Our membership subscription fee is € 30 per year.

Each year we select one charity (or sometimes two) to be our primary focus and we undertake a variety of projects according to the interests of our members.

What we offer Involvement in Cyprus International Women of Today is a very fulfilling way to achieve service to your community, grow as an individual, and gain the friendship of women who share similar interests.

COMMUNITY SERVICE Members can contribute to their communities by raising funds for worthy causes and by providing services or education to benefit community members. We organise events and projects to raise funds for our chosen charities. Some of us also choose to offer ‘Volunteer Hours’ to those charities or other projects.

PERSONAL GROWTH Members are encouraged to develop and to foster skills and talents related to becoming successful individuals, interacting well with other people, and becoming capable leaders. We offer workshops and lectures – calling on the expertise of individual members or from visiting experts. These cover a wide range of subjects.

FUN & FRIENDSHIP Members develop friendships and find personal support within the organisation.

Working towards common goals forges friendships and sharing skills creates bonds. We hold social events like “Share Your Light” in which a member shares a passion, interest or hobby. We offer regular events which are relaxed and geared to having fun.
