Molly Brown, half Ute Mountain Ute and Army veteran, has a healthy distrust of cops and runs a Colorado Springs safe house for displaced First Americans in addition to her non-mainstream job as a cocktail waitress in a gentlemen’sclub. One of her recent wards, a young man from the Mikado Reservation in northeastern Michigan, is found brutally murdered and horribly mutilated. His fellow Anishinaabe insist he was murdered by a Bearwalker, a shape-shifter from tribal mythology. Molly seeks answers as she juggles raising her daughter, an abused dog, work, a horse, and her latest rescues, mischievous identical twins. They remind her of her twin grandfathers, who with her bigamist grandmother, raised Molly on their ranch down on the rez in southern Colorado.
