MAYOR’S MESSAGE Our community looks forward to the WOW Festival each year. It is an iconic part of Liverpool’s calendar – a celebration of youth, imagination and interactive arts. Thank you to the hardworking staff at CPAC and our partners for making this wonderful festival possible. This year’s theme for WOW is ‘Art of Play’ with CPAC transforming into one big playground with a creative twist. One of the principal elements in designing a playground is to delight visitors with secrets and surprises and this is a driving factor behind this year’s programming. Children, teens and adults will be thoroughly entertained by what they discover in the playground. WOW encourages freedom of creative expression. Visitors are welcome to scream, shout, sing and dance as much as they please. Creativity and interaction are important elements to support our children’s growth and development. Council is proud to provide our families with such a lively and vibrant festival. Mayor Wendy Waller

T

he Way Out West Festival for Young People is the premier interactive festival celebrating young people’s curiosity and imagination, in partnership with some of Australia’s leading artists creating work with, by and for young people. The 2019 WOW Festival is a five-day event held in one of Australia’s most unique arts centres, Casula Powerhouse, each July. The WOW Festival invites you to dive into a packed program of theatre, interactive installations, dance, music, visual arts, crafts, literature, food, yoga, workshops and FREE family events guaranteed to inspire joy, creativity and curiosity.

We’re all artists when we’re young. It’s only as we begin to “grow up” that we begin to think that we’re not. At WOW we like to counter that terrible tendency. To draw, sing, act, dance and create things are fundamental human behaviours. Doing these things make us happy, complete people. We should all learn the lessons that children teach us in this. Creating is for everyone and WOW reminds us of that every year in the most wonderful way. And growing up is over-rated… See you there! Craig Donarski, CPAC Director

Claudia Chidiac, WOW Festival Producer, Curator

There has been a fascination with the moon, planets and stars throughout the ages. History shows that most early civilizations showed understanding of astronomy and patterns of movement

GIANT LEAP

Fifty years ago, Apollo 11 Mission landed the first humans on the Moon. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Mission grabbed the attention and fired the imagination of the world. The first walk on the moon on 20 July 1969 by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin was televised with the words “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” seen and heard by millions around the globe. During the WOW Festival, the Marsden Gallery and Turbine Hall ceiling will exhibit works that are part of the Giant Leap program.

MEMORIES OF THE MOON LANDING (1969) The landing of the first humans on the moon in 1969; was a global event and was viewed by millions around the world. In the Marsden gallery the MEMORIES OF THE MOON LANDING exhibition tells the story of that time in 1969 and also gives visitors opportunity to put themselves on the moon taking ‘one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind’. The exhibition includes:

• Interviews with local residents about their recollection in a video by CuriousWorks • Memorabilia and newspapers from the time • An interactive activity that gives visitors the opportunity to be the astronaut who takes the ‘Giant Leap’ just like the astronauts of The Apollo 11 mission Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins.
