Jenn’s Cupcakes and Parties is celebrating its 10-year anniversary as a woman-owned bakery based in Castro Valley that specializes in creating custom-designed cakes, cupcakes, and sweet treats. In February 2014, Jenn’s Cupcakes and Parties became a licensed Cottage Food Operation in Alameda County. Without any formal culinary education, owner Jenn DeJanes felt her passion for baking was worth sharing, and that’s how the business started. Ten years later, Jenn’s Cupcakes has blossomed into a thriving bakery with a team of passionate creators who work hard to bring clients’ visions to life. “With thousands of cupcakes and custom cakes under our apron, Jenn’s Cupcakes has become an integral part of birthdays, weddings, corporate events, and celebrations of all kinds,” DeJanes said. One of the standout aspects of Jenn’s Cupcakes is its commitment to community involvement. The bakery offers fundraising opportunities for local schools and non-profit organizations, giving back 20 percent of its sales. Over the past decade, the bakery has contributed a total of $30,000 back to the community. Over the past 10 years, DeJanes says the company has grown by staying committed to excellence and broadening its culinary skills. The journey took the team to bakery conventions where they immersed themselves in the latest trends and honed their techniques.

Although affordability continues to impact homeownership, the combination of a solid economy, strong demographics and lower mortgage rates are setting the stage for a more robust housing market. Mortgage rates have been stable for nearly two months, but with continued deceleration in ination, rates are e pected to decline further. The economy continues to outperform due to solid job and income growth, while household formation is increasing at rates above pre-pandemic levels. These favorable factors should provide strong fundamental support to the market in the months ahead.

Dorado: How Poetry Journey Began continued from front page excellence, academic achievement, leadership, and contribution to their community last year. “The poems that I submitted, I worked really hard on it. I feel really grateful to have the opportunity to represent Castro Valley and Alameda County,” she said. Dorado’s poetry journey began when she performed for Poetry Cafe in her 8th-grade year. From then on, she fell in love with poetry and felt inspired by Olivia Gatwood’s poems. She has made a name for herself in Bay Area literary circles by becoming involved with YouthSpeaks since 2020. Her work is inspired by exploring the cultural impact of villainy through digital media and literature and how it impacts public policy on marginalized communities. er other in uences in her work are from Filipino culture. Some of her recent poems include “Manananggal Meets Corporate Feminism” and “I talk to Tiktik Maria Labo after joining TikTok’s ‘POV: you stopped dressing for the male gaze trend.’” “Through my work, I hope to shift the way stories about criminality, violence, and goodness are told,” she said. Presidential Race Is NOT Obvious

Nate Miley Belongs Back as Supervisor

Dear Editor, hen Biden took office he signed “3 e ecutive orders reversing Trump on immigration.” “Biden has signed 25 other executive orders since taking office on Jan. 20, including orders to halt construction of Trump’s US-Mexico border wall.” (New York Post) Here are some additional facts from a recent Google search: Our southern border is in a crisis. “Biden admits the border crisis he created is real — but won’t accept any blame.” “But it doesn’t take money or bipartisan amnesty deals to halt the border invasion. It takes an executive order reinstating Trump’s border protections that Biden dismantled on day one. That’s why millions of illegal migrants are ooding into the country. He invited them in.” (New York Post) “The number of illegal aliens who have entered the interior of the U.S. under the Biden administration now is greater than the population of at least 22 states as well as the District of Columbia. Data released Monday by the House Judiciary Committee reveals that at least 3.8 million illegal aliens either have been released into the nation’s interior or successfully evaded the Border Patrol to enter the country since President Joe Biden took office Jan. 20, 2021.” And, “Data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, part of DHS, reports that over 5 million illegal aliens were encountered at America’s southern border between the start of the Biden administration and this past March 31.” (msn.com) “More than 371,000 non-U.S. citizens were stopped when they attempted to enter the United States last month, including those who walked across without permission, lacked proper documents to pass through ports of entry, or were paroled in from abroad, according to U.S. Customs and order Protection data released Friday evening. The previous record of 341,392 was set in August 2023.” (Washington Examiner) That’s more than 5 times the population of Castro Valley of illegal aliens entering our country in a single month! Through federal and state taxes, WE pay to house, feed, provide medical care, education, transportation, and attorney fees to these illegal aliens. Governor Newsom just decided that illegal aliens will receive free medical care. While it is humane, with the number of people it is overrunning the system, hospitals, etc., not to mention the crime and cost to taxpayers. And scariest of all is the number of ‘gotaways’ – the people who crossed the border and just go anywhere they want. Do you think there might be some terrorists among them? We are now second-class citizens when compared to illegal aliens. The 2024 presidential race is not obvious. My suggestion would be to look at the facts and to use common sense in making your choice. –Ken Owen, Castro Valley

By the time you read this letter, you will have received your mail-ballot. There’s going to be lot there, but no item is as important as the Alameda County Supervisor race. Nate Miley belongs back as County Supervisor. Yes, he’s been there a long time, and that’s the reason to re-elect him. Take a hard look at his record - the Castro Valley Farmers’ Market; the Cherryland Community Center; the Ashland Community Center; the Eden Area MAC; the Fairview MAC; pushed big Pharma for prescription drug drop-off sites; his efforts to improve Mental Health services to the Jail and in the County; plus efforts to get the rest of the Board to listen to Castro Valley Veterans issues; and, last, but not least - all the remarkable work he has done for seniors throughout Alameda County. That one I can personally vouch for! Over the years when I was an EBMUD Director, I had plenty of opportunities to interface with Nate on Local and County issues. We didn’t always agree, but we did get things done. Now, as the Board of Supervisors has had major turnover, we need someone who will act as institutional memory and be a moderating force to get things done responsibly. This year we have a choice between a responsible Moderate and a so-called “Progressive” bent towards interests that don’t mesh with us. Now more than ever, we need a responsible Moderate - Nate Miley. –Frank Mellon, Castro Valley

Arts Education of Our Young People Last week I had the privilege of attending a dress rehearsal at the Castro Valley Holy Cross Episcopal Church for the Castro Valley High School Madrigals on their way to perform at California All-State Music Education Conference (CASMEC). They were joined by the elite choirs from Chabot College and San Jose State. To be in the midst of these young people who have worked so hard to produce this beautiful music was both thrilling and inspiring. The person sitting next to me exclaimed, “We could have easily paid a hundred dollars for these tickets and felt like we got our money’s worth!” It was an incredible evening. Each year the state board selects ensembles of distinction that exemplify outstanding artistry and technique. High school Director Laryssa Sadoway proudly shared, “To be chosen is a huge honor. We have been prepping for our performance since the first week of school.” Besides the CASM C performance, the Castro Valley students were invited to sing at the State Capitol and take a tour with our state Senator. Thank you Castro Valley for continuing to invest in the arts education of our young people. They continue to make us proud! –Terry Liebowitz, Castro Valley

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Nine Fitness Tips for February By Mitch Rothbardt S

C

I

Our Athletes of the Week are the Canyon Middle School and Creekside Middle School Flag Football teams. The Condors beat the Wildcats by a score of 14-8 at the 23rd Annual Battle of the Valley last Friday, February 2, at John Brosnan field at Castro Valley High School Trojan Stadium. The

event started with an All-Athletes Parade and a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem by Sara Wilkerson. Spirit Squads from both schools and parents and friends braved the rain to cheer on their teams. The competition is for annual bragging rights, as both teams have performed well this season.

ve got a lot of fitness-y things on mind these days. Well, I guess I usually have lots of fitness-y things on my mind. In any case, here’s 9 things I’ve been thinking about for this month. 1. The all-or-nothing mentality usually gets you nothing. If this is your normal approach you should already know that. Stop kidding yourself and cut it out! This is NOT the time it’s finally going to work. 2. raining e ibility for e ibility s sake is not only pointless, but it’ll also probably get you hurt. Especially if you’re not doing any strength training to supplement it. 3. Sure, you need to listen to your body, but sometimes you need to tell your body to shut

up. Not every little tweak is worth worrying about. Sometimes you just need to get on with it. 4. If you have chronic pain, just hitting the gym a few times a week won t fi it. ven with an appropriate program, you need to be aware of your movement EVERY DAY to see lasting results. Don’t believe me? Where are your shoulders right now? 5. STOP USING AGE AN EXCUSE!!! IT’S NOT A GOOD OR VALID ONE!!! 6. You know if you’re working hard or not. If you’re not sure what the best way to work harder is, send me an email. 7. Yes, pull-ups and bench presses are hard. Improvement

is hard to come by with those e ercises. Just accept it, work hard and progress will come. It just may take a longer than deadlifts or squats. 8. Sometimes the best way to lift more weight is just putting more on the bar. Get out of your own way. 9. Finally, As the great RuPaul says: Feeling aren’t facts. Keep this in mind if you’re trying to justify what you’re doing even though you’re not getting the results you want. We covered a lot of ground here. I hope at least one or two things clicked with you. Mitch is the owner and head trainer at Castro Valley Fitness. continued from front page and his horses were regularly earning more than $1 million per year, often more than $2 million. He had made it in the big leagues of thoroughbred horse racing. Many of Hess’s victories have come in partnership with Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeau , a union that began early in their careers on a tip by a racetrack character named Tad Dowd. “Tad was a character from right out of old-school racetrack movies,” Hess said. “He always wore seersucker suits and a straw hat—a real character.” Dowd told the young Hess about Desormeau , who was riding in Maryland at the time. The two met when Desormeau came to California and struck up an immediate friendship. Desormeau has

dedicated their time and effort to the three-month 8-game season, which started in November. Weekly practices included basketball drills and a challenge to memorize Bible verses. Forty players successfully memorized all their verses from Psalm 139 and were awarded prizes. Retired akland olice fficer and Golden State Warriors Team Security Manager Tony Banks shared his life story and how his walk with od in uenced his law enforcement work and the Warriors Basketball organization. Attendees also

participated in a free-throw competition and the annual Coaches vs. Players game. illion in arnings been aboard almost 40 percent of Hess’s winners. A multiple graded stakes winning trainer, Hess has developed many outstanding horses, including Grade One stakes winners River Special and D’wildcat. But perhaps his favorite was a $40,000 claimer named Slerp, who went on to earn more than $600,000. “ e only lost one photo finish,” Hess said. “He had a great brain and a heart of gold. He loved his job. He reminded me of (San Francisco 49er running back) Christian McCaffrey.” With almost 1,500 trips to the Winner’s Circle and nearly $52 million in career earnings, Hess still remembers his Castro Valley roots and the lessons he learned from his father. “My dad was a man of integrity in a sport where there can be question marks,” he

said. “He was always true to himself and true to the athlete.” Then he added, “And my mom doesn’t get enough credit. She was always there in the trenches with us.” Hess’s stable currently includes 35 horses at Santa Anita and 20 at Gulfstream in Florida. He frequently travels back and forth but keeps his home in Arcadia. Hess has two adult sons, Garrison and Christian. This is the ninth in a series of 16 articles profiling the 2024 inductees into the Castro Valley Sports Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame ceremonies and banquet will be held Sunday, April 21, at Redwood Canyon Golf Course.
