MARTYN TRIBE (ARCHITECT): THE BRIEF FOR EIGHT MURPHY WAS TO CREATE A BOUTIQUE BUILDING WITH BASEMENT CARPARKING.

CHRIS MCCUE: INSPIRED BY THE TYPICAL TERRACE OR ROW HOUSE TYPOLOGY FOUND IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD, THE DEVELOPMENT IS COMPOSED OF THREE BAY TERRACES. LIKE A LOT OF THE ICONIC VICTORIANS – WHICH POSSESS THEIR OWN INTRICACIES AND ARCHITECTURAL QUIRKS – EACH OF THE THREE FORMS ARE SUBTLY VARIED FROM THE OTHER.

COLLABORATING WITH CARR DESIGN AND LAZZCORP, WE HAD MANY CONVERSATIONS ABOUT CREATING A PROJECT THAT IS DIFFERENT TO EVERYTHING ELSE ON THE MARKET. THE ANTITHESIS OF THE ‘BIG GLASS BOX’, LAZZCORP REQUESTED A DESIGN THAT IS ELEGANT, SOPHISTICATED AND ENDURING. THIS LITTLE POCKET OF SOUTH YARRA IS SO UNIQUE; LAZZCORP WERE KEEN TO CREATE THE TYPE OF HOME THAT IS TRULY RARE IN TODAY’S INNER-CITY REAL ESTATE MARKET. RESPONDING TO A CONTEMPORARY LIFESTYLE, THEY WANTED EACH APARTMENT TO BE SPACIOUS, LUXURIOUS AND COMFORTABLE. THIS MEANS LARGER LIVING AREAS, GENEROUS BALCONIES AND TERRACES, HIGH-END FINISHES AND FIXTURES AND DUAL CAR PARKS. WHAT IS THE OVERRIDING IDEA FOR 8 MURPHY STREET? MARTYN TRIBE: THE DESIGN OF EIGHT MURPHY WAS PARTICULARLY INFLUENCED BY ITS LOCATION WITHIN A HERITAGE STREETSCAPE. LIKE MOST OF SOUTH YARRA, THIS AREA IS RENOWNED FOR HAVING SOME OF THE MOST BEAUTIFULLY DESIGNED AND PRESERVED TERRACED HOUSES IN MELBOURNE. WE ASPIRED TO CREATE A DESIGN THAT WOULD COMPLEMENT AND PRESERVE THE STREETSCAPE’S UNIQUE CHARACTER AND AESETHTIC. CHRIS MCCUE (ARCHITECT): IT WAS ESSENTIALLY ABOUT RECOGNISING AND STRENGTHENING WHAT’S THERE, AND PROMOTING NEW IDEAS ABOUT CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE. IN THIS CASE, IT’S THE INTERESTING AMALGAMATION OF NEARBY DOUBLE - SOMETIMES TRIPLE - STOREY TERRACED HOUSES, AND THE ROBUST AESTHETICS OF GEORGIAN ARCHITECTURE. WE’VE AIMED TO INCLUDE SOME OF THOSE PRINCIPLES AND OFFER A CONTEMPORARY DESIGN AS A NEW WAY OF LIVING. THE OUTCOME IS A THOROUGHLY MODERN, DISCREET AND WELL MANNERED APARTMENT BUILDING. IT IS A FORM THAT IS DESIGNED TO BE FAMILIAR TO THE VIEWER, YET ENCOURAGES THEM TO THINK ABOUT CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE IN A NEW AND INTERESTING WAY.

UNLIKE TERRACES WHICH HAVE A GREAT LEVEL OF ORNAMENTATION AND DECORATIVE BRICKWORK, THE FACADE IS MONOLITHIC, ROBUST AND DEVOID OF DECORATION. DETAIL IS EXPRESSED IN THE ARTICULATION OF THE BALUSTRADES, HANDRAILS, SPANDRELS AND FENCING. THE MAIN PODIUM OF THE BUILDING IS THREE LEVELS TALL, OFFERING DIFFERENT HEIGHTS OF ENGAGEMENT WITH THE ACTIVITY OF THE STREET. THE DEEP BAYS OF EACH FRAME DEFINE THE BALCONY FORMS, RECESSES TO BEDROOM WINDOWS AND JULIET BALCONIES. ACCORDINGLY THE BALCONY TREATMENT LIGHTENS WITH THE HEIGHT OF THE BUILDING. THE LOWER FLOORS REQUIRE A GREATER LEVEL OF PRIVACY FROM PASSERSBY, SO THE BALCONY BALUSTRADES ARE VISUALLY ENCLOSED. THE UPPER LEVELS HOWEVER, ARE MORE TRANSPARENT WITH A CRISP, CONTEMPORARY DETAIL. THE MATERIAL FOR THE LEVEL FOUR RESIDENCES CHANGE FROM THE SOLID MASONRY FORM TO CLADDING MORE EVOCATIVE OF THE METALWORK DETAIL FOUND IN THE BALCONY BALUSTRADES. THIS ENSURES THAT THE TOP FLOOR SEAMLESSLY FITS INTO THE BUILDING’S DESIGN. TO PROVIDE SOLAR PROTECTION TO THE WEST, A VEIL OF OPERABLE ALUMINIUM LOUVRES PERFORM, FRAMED BY A FURTHER LAYERING OF METAL CLAD BAYS. HOW DOES EACH APARTMENT’S FLOOR PLAN REFLECT HOW PEOPLE LIVE TODAY? SUE CARR (INTERIOR DESIGN): AT THE MOMENT THERE IS AN INCREASING DESIRE FOR PEOPLE TO SWAP THE QUARTER-ACRE BLOCK FOR PREMIUM ACCESS TO AMENITY, LIFESTYLE, SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE AND CULTURE.
