Welcome to our Autumn/Winter Season There’s been much anticipation around the next few months, and I’m thrilled to present a programme which lives up to the high expectations that the borough demands of its theatre.

This season we welcome the nation’s best well-regarded and iconic institutions.

Since first staging their Connections Festival in 2016, Cast has been working closely with our friends at The National Theatre on a series of exciting projects including a schools tour of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and Macbeth.

In 2020, Cast will present the third instalment of the National Theatre Public Acts project which will see over 120 local people performing alongside professionals in a large-scale National Theatre production.

Preparations begin this September with groups from all walks of life rehearsing with the National Theatre team.

Cast has always been defined by more than just the wavy walls of our theatre, this September, and over the next three years, we’ll be pitching up all over Doncaster.

In September, Paines Plough (p14 & p15) Roundabout will be popping up at Doncaster Marketplace. This pop up theatre will be filled every night with new plays, music and comedy and is a fabulous opportunity for us to reach out into other areas of Doncaster.

Bringing great arts to everyone is something we continue to commit to, and none is more inclusive and anticipated than our September FREE outdoor extravaganza. Rise! will see a 25ft puppet mother and child walk through the streets of Doncaster.

Other exciting news includes Cast’s dementia partnership In the Moment (p27) and our talent development programme which finds ways for local artists to thrive in Doncaster (p38).

It’s time to have a ball, as Cast presents the most magical family pantomime of all time, Cinderella.

The perfect fairy tale, this charming and hilarious musical extravaganza follows the fortunes of Cinderella and her trusted lovelorn friend Buttons.

When the Fairy Godmother works her magic, Cinderella’s rags are transformed into a dazzling gown ready to live out her big dreams at the ball. Cinderella’s fortunes begin to change when she meets her fairy Godmother, but as the clock strikes midnight she must rely on glass slippers and a little fairy dust if she’s to see the Prince again.

This large-scale processional performance celebrates the stories of those people who have changed the lives of others for the better! A giant woman puppet arrives in Doncaster, accompanied by the beautiful spirit of the Bird of Freedom. She has travelled a long way, gathering stories, and now it is time to pass on those hopes and dreams to the next generation.

As she explores, she learns about the dreams and struggles of those past and present who have contributed to the story of Doncaster. This spectacular performance features giant puppets, performances by local choirs and a celebration of the people of Doncaster.

Roundabout Cast is set to welcome an award winning portable 160-seat pop-up entertainment venue! Called Roundabout, the venue is the brainchild of Paines Plough – the UK’s national theatre of new plays. Cast has partnered with Paines Plough to bringing new writing, comedy, music and community arts right to your doorstep as part of a three-year project. This year we’ll be rocking up at Doncaster Market Place from Thursday 19 September to Sunday 22 September!

The Manfreds - Hits, Jazz & Blues Tour Friday 20 September  7.30pm Tickets £23 MAIN SPACE The ‘60s group Manfred Mann is now considered, more than ever, one of the finest and most respected bands from that era. Their numerous hits were R&B based with an undercurrent of jazz - a very unusual but winning combination of playing style and substance.

As a result, their records have a timeless quality and, some 55 years on, The Manfreds, with original front man, Paul Jones, will be performing many of their hits, including ‘Do Wah Diddy Diddy’, one of the most popular and instantly recognisable songs of the ‘60s, and still the biggest audience pleaser at their concerts, along with a mix of jazz and blues covers and tracks from their individual solo albums. His recent album, ‘The Ukulele Album’ has caused a similar stir internationally, breaking new download territory where he is now a Spotify legend. The iconic American playwright August Wilson paints a vivid portrait of everyday lives in this defining moment of American history. When Two Trains Running opened on Broadway in 1992, its legendary premiere won Tony and Drama Desk Awards. Directed by the 2018 winner of the RTST Sir Peter Hall Director Award, Nancy Medina, this major revival will introduce this Pulitzer Prize shortlisted modern classic to audiences UK-wide for the first time.

Jess welcomes you on this journey with her and apologies to her nan for swearing.

Between prison escapes, daredevil stunts, eloping to the other side of the world and the cult, it’s hard to pick the real black sheep of this family. Prison Factory Cult Circus is raw, bitingly honest, and often surreal. Through circus, live music, story and the soundtrack of life in the North of England, Lucy dissects her past and delves into her family’s long-term relationship with risk, knife throwing, lasso, and musical saw. What better way to search for a sense of belonging before starting a family of her own?

As the shadows lengthen and the whisky flows, their stories become more elaborate and improbable, until the unexpected arrival of two younger men forces events to take an unexpected turn.

In No Man’s Land, his most beguiling and atmospheric play, Harold Pinter mingles truth and memory, art and language to create a world of dark comedy and subtle power games, where nothing is as it seems.

Sensory Space The theatre can sometimes be a difficult place for many people, for different reasons. Some children with additional needs find the theatre overwhelming and unsettling and that’s why we’ve launched our Sensory Space. The Sensory Space is an informal, sensory break-out space, specially designed for those with additional needs. What’s more, the Sensory Space will have a live video feed from the theatre, so you can come out of the theatre and never miss a moment of the show.

We enjoy welcoming everyone to Cast and we’re working hard to make sure your visit is extra special.

The Sensory Space will be open on select performances so that children who become overwhelmed can continue to enjoy the show in a quieter, nurturing and safe environment. There’s no need to book a ticket for the Sensory Space, it will be available to all ticket holders for that particular show.

Symphony of the Senses Saturday 12 October  11am - 4pm Tickets FREE SECOND SPACE Drop in to a unique sensory experience and create your own world of colour and music through movement. Large fabric “sails” fill the space and reflect and mix colours and light that you, create yourselves. Learn how to create whole orchestras of sound with just your hands, feet - or literally any part of your body - moving over special infrared sensors. Sound-paintings can also be played by moving your hands over the surface and you can “paint” rainbows of colour around the space.

Each year it offers a unique opportunity for youth theatres and school theatre groups to stage new plays written for young people by some of theatre’s most exciting playwrights, and to perform in leading theatres across the UK.

Public Acts Public Acts is the National Theatre’s new nationwide initiative to create extraordinary acts of theatre and community. In 2020, the NT will partner with Cast for a new Public Acts production, working with community organisations from the local area who share our vison of theatre as a force for change.

Through these partnerships Doncaster’s diverse communities will take part in bespoke programmes, including weekly performance workshops, theatre trips and opportunities for socialising and creating together. At the end of the year everybody will be invited to come together as one company to perform in a new production in collaboration with professional artists.

Lead donors to these programmes include: Arts Council England’s Strategic Touring Fund, Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Mohn Westlake Foundation, Garfield Weston Foundation, The Buffini Chao Foundation, The Ingram Trust, Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation, Hertz, Delta Air Lines. and The Peter Cundill Foundation. by Public Works, the Public Theater’s ground-breaking programme in New York. The National Theatre’s Partner for Learning is Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Mini Music Makers Wednesdays  10am Ages under 5 Tickets £5 (adults free) Your little one is a natural-born music-maker and in Mini Music Makers you’ll learn a lot of fun musical games to play together. The Lady in the Van

By Alan Bennett Tuesday 8 - Thursday 10 October  7.15pm Tickets £15 (£10 under 26) SECOND SPACE Adapted by the author from his memoir, The Lady in the Van tells the story of Miss Mary Shepherd, whom Alan Bennett first came across when she was living in the street near his home in Camden Town.

Taking refuge with her van in his garden originally for three months, she ended up staying fifteen years. Funny, touching and unexpectedly spectacular this play starred Maggie Smith on stage and in film. A wonderfully bittersweet comic diary of the years when a lethally dotty and very smelly old bat parked her unroadworthy vehicle.
