From the village of South Elmsall, just outside Doncaster, and established in 1884, Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Brass Band is one of the most famous names in brass bands. They are currently ranked in the world’s top ten and are the 2015 Yorkshire Champions.

With an array of world-class musicians the programme will include popular Christmas music alongside a mixture of brass band favourites and well-known pieces.

The Pitmen Poets Tuesday 26 January

The Pitmen Poets celebrate the songs, humour, and culture of North East England’s coal mining tradition, bringing together four of the region’s leading champions of its musical heritage.

Ex-Lindisfarne singer and writer Billy Mitchell, songman from London’s West End musical Warhorse, Bob Fox, leading exponent of Tyneside song Benny Graham, and much-covered Folk Awards-nominee songwriter Jez Lowe – individually and collectively The Pitmen Poets.

With archive footage and photographs, this is a journey through the centuries of a oncegreat industry, from the songs that saw it thrive and dominate, to those that saw its demise and the resulting aftermath.

He conducted Hatfield Band during the 80s and 90s and to keep the connection, their current Musical Director, Mr Stan Lippeatt is his nephew. An evening in Ken’s memory, sit back and enjoy.

Fuelled with eye-watering honesty and true Yorkshire grit, this is an hilarious account of those whose jobs had been taken, and whose communities had been destroyed. It’s the story of how they fought back after being shafted!

Tuesday 23 February From Matthew Bourne’s The Car Man to Carlos Acosta’s version for the Royal Ballet, Bizet’s Carmen continues to be popular with artists who are inspired by its rich and enduring resonance. In his most ambitious work to date Bawren Tavaziva reimagines the work in a modern twist of a classic tale.

Set in an oil rich, military dictatorship in Equatorial Guinea, Tavaziva’s Africarmen follows the lives of a group of villagers, working tirelessly for a tyrannical gang master. As the story unfolds one woman is at the centre of a love affair that leads to an entanglement of desire, deceit and corruption with tragic consequences.

Performed to music composed and arranged by Fayyaz Virji of the acclaimed Warriors International this synthesis of ballet, contemporary and African dance makes for a powerful choreographic language that speaks loud, without talking.

The award-winning variety show is a popular and regular feature of Cast’s programme. This Spring it returns with an all-new show with headline stars The Grumbleweeds – the much loved masters of comedy and music.

Saturday 5 March Marking the 30th anniversary of the end of the 1984/85 British Miners' strike, award-winning choreographer Gary Clarke proudly presents COAL, a riveting dance theatre show which takes a nostalgic look at the hard hitting realities of life at the coal face.

Strong, powerful and emotive, COAL explores the darker underbelly of the mining industry unearthing the true nature and body wrecking demands of a working class industry now almost forgotten.

Tuesday 5 – Saturday 9 April A dark and stylish new adaptation of the classic Newcastle-noir thriller.

Jack Carter is back home for the first time in years. He’s back to bury a brother who hated him, in a town he swore he was never going to see again. He’s back to find out who killed his brother, to pay debts and settle scores.

As the local underworld closes ranks, Jack’s bosses back in London find out that he has had his fingers in the till, and other places they shouldn’t have been. Jack plays a deadly game of cat and mouse as everyone tries to ‘get Carter’, unless he gets you first.

Inspired by the classic noir of Raymond Chandler, by the freedom of Jazz and the coming of the 1960s, Ted Lewis’s novel is a classic of British crime fiction.

Set in a hard and uncompromising world of 1960s Newcastle, rife with crime, sex, gambling and violence, this adaptation tells the story made famous in Mike Hodge’s film starring Michael Caine in the lead role. #GetCarter

Gerry Cross the Mersey An evening with Gerry and the Pacemakers Friday 22 April

Gerry and the Pacemakers topped the charts for much of the 60s, a leading band in ‘Merseybeat’ along with the sounds of The Beatles, Cilla Black and The Searchers.

Friday 22 January In 1972 tens of thousands of building workers won the first national strike in the industry for better pay and conditions.

‘Flying pickets’ left contractors reeling. The Tory government and the large building companies wanted revenge, 24 builders in North Wales were put on trial.

They became known as ‘The Shrewsbury 24’, and three of them were jailed, including building workers Des Warren and Ricky Tomlinson (who went on to become well known for playing Jim in The Royle Family).

Reflecting the great tide of anger at the time the production is filled with 1970s popular and political songs arranged by renowned folk musician John Kirkpatrick alongside Tomlinson’s poetry from his time in prison.

Throwing out the theatre rulebook, audiences become gatecrashers as they infiltrate an intimate gathering, using silent disco headphones to listen to different parts of the party at the press of a button or to just dance to the music.

In a custom built living room, partygoers have complete freedom to eat, drink, look through the bookshelves, join in the games and make as much noise as they like as they add to the chaos of Sam’s disastrous birthday party.

Saturday 19 – Sunday 20 March 1885; the streets of Manchester are crackling with energy, youth and violence. As workers power the Industrial Revolution, 50,000 people are crammed into one square mile.

The mills rumble thunderously day and night. The air is thick with smoke. Life is lived large, and lived on the street.

Inspired by the stories of Manchester gangs between the nineteenth century and today, and performed by some of Doncaster’s finest young actors, Rona Munro’s new play smashes the nineteenth century against a twenty-first century sensibility to bring the young Scuttlers back to vivid, potent life.

Thursday 19 – Saturday 21 May Join Northern Ballet, a Company renowned for transforming well known stories into brilliant dance theatre, as they return to Doncaster with the World Premiere of their new ballet, Charlotte Brontë’s iconic masterpiece Jane Eyre.

Orphaned at a young age and cruelly treated by her Aunt, Jane Eyre is a plain but intelligent child who grows up knowing little kindness.

Jane later accepts a position as a Governess at Thornfield, a gentleman’s manor whose master is the dark and impassioned Mr Rochester.

In spite of their social differences, an unlikely bond grows between the pair but as romance develops, it becomes clear that Mr Rochester has a hidden past that threatens to ruin them both.

The Great Big Dance Off Northern Regional Finals

Monday 1 February The GBDO is a national dance competition for primary and secondary schools across the country. In Doncaster, they turn their attention to the schools for the Northern regional finals.

Each school can perform for up to three and a half minutes to a piece of music and style of their choosing. Who will take the title as Regional Champions and progress to the National finals in Birmingham in July?

Tuesday 8 March Children across Doncaster have an opportunity to take part in the Stink Bottom music project in Spring, culminating in a concert with the world class musicians of Ensemble 360.

Music has so many benefits for children’s development and learning and this project gives teachers the resources and ideas needed to put music at the heart of learning.

Accessibility Our new building has been designed with complete accessibility in mind. Whatever your access requirements you will find our venue accommodating and accessible.

If you have specific needs please discuss these with our box office staff. All areas are accessible via lifts and there are accessible wheelchair spaces throughout. Performance spaces are equipped with infrared hearing panels, which can also accommodate audio described performances. There is also a changing places room for people with specific needs.

Cast offers Tea and Tour events throughout the year. Join us to have a look in the backstage spaces not normally on view, from down under our stage right up to the fly tower above. Afterwards enjoy afternoon tea in our café bar.

This is in the Waterdale part of the town centre. We are the big, copper fronted building on the new Sir Nigel Gresley Square.
