Model car hall of fame Class of 2020 the Best E-magazine Thank you to all who made it possible Team castheads

EDITORS NOTES We live in a world of post-pandemia. Pandemics, Pandemonium and Pandems are everywhere. The EVERGIVEN annoyed everyone, causing pandemonium in the canal. The Pandemic is that free loading friend who refuses to move from your couch. Fortunately, MINI GT has a long string of PANDEM based cars coming out and tuners have now become a staple. It’s also the FORD MUSTANG birthday month and if you are a fan, we cannot count the amount of Diecast Models there are out in the world but, we did bring a quintessential selection to this issue and I can tell you we didn’t reign in our horses at all. From 1/8 scale build up projects to the finest 1/64 Mustang on the market. Our new Custom WERKS section will get you on your way into doing your very own customs and if that’s not enough encouragement we have thrown in a little surprise as well to encourage more inspiration. And this is just the beginning soon we will have more great workshops, tutorials and challenges lined up to keep you busy this year. Finally, a huge thank you goes out to all you wonderful Cast Heads and supporters who have made the recent awards possible. Inducted into the Model Car Hall Of Fame Classroom 2020 as the Best eMagazine for 2020 only means our hard work and having fun is paying off and the pleasure we get putting this together is indescribable.

Nigel

Ecstatic is one of the words I'd use to describe the feeling of waking up to the news that CASTHEADS MAGAZINE had been inducted to the MODEL CAR HALL OF FAME as the best eMagazine of 2020!! With the advent of the second quarter of 2021, we see many new models making it to collectors everywhere. And the cancellation of major toy/hobby even in 2021, we are poised to be the bridge between collectors, both great and small, and brands this year. We are corralling a diverse range of models this year, just not fall into being the one like the other. We are bringing more two-wheels and winged models to the mix, action toys that more than roll on a track and some serious build-it-yourself stuff, not to forget new features being introduced to make your world more vibrant. So go ahead, make your day. Enjoy the issue, we loved doing it for you.

1959 Ford Anglia & Lucky the Leprechaun The staple of many a kids breakfast, Lucky Charms and it’s mascot has been around since the 1960s. This marshmellowy cereal was a hit with many across the decades and its cheery spokesman was Sir Charms (aka LC Leprechaun) who used to bring the goodness at the end of the rainbow. He’s paired with a Ford Anglia 105E in a striking red/white color scheme which he uses to get away from people who are after his lucky charms. It’s a great model for those who are nostalgic for classic British Fords and yummy breakfast cereals. Scale 1:24 Status: Available

Schuco Modelle

Ford Granada Coupé Presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1972, the successor to the Ford 20- and 26M series, called Granada, was available in three body styles. As a combi, the so-called Granada Tournament, as a coupe and as a classic Limousine. The top variant at that time, the Ford Granada GXL, equipped with an outstanding 3-liter V6 engine, is today one of the most sought-after and wellpaid youngtimers of the 1970s. Majorette

Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport Majorette is on a roll in 2021. They are releasing a whole slew of new models that is setting collectors both young and young at heart abuzz with whats coming. And one model that will be seeing the light of day is the Bugatti Chiron. There might (or might not be) two iterations of the model, a basic Chiron in red/black and a Pur Sport in blue/black. These are still in the prototype stage and are subject to seeing a lot (or nor a lot) of changes before finally hitting the streets. But you know you are going to be interested in a car with working suspension and opening parts. Scale 1:64ish Status: Prototype, mid 2021

Solido Models

Alfa Romeo GTV6 1984 The GTV6 had its humble beginnings with the Tipo 116 back in the late 70s. Through a few transitions evolved into to GTV6 sporting a 2.5l engine that was quite robust and better loved thank it’s previous iteration. This model was also popular in the racing and rally circuit and kept winning accolades on multiple years. Solido Models presents the model quite charming detail. It sports the duo-tone chassis, with the yellow low-light drive headlights. Euro car enthusiasts are sure to love this model. S1802301 | Scale 1:18 Status: Early 2021

GT Spirit

Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Roadster I wish I had more space to wax lyrical about the real-world car this model is based on. The 25-car run of the road versions were to complete the required homologation set by the FIA. Out of the 25 built, only five were roadsters. Out of these, only one sported the black paint job you see here. The roadsters were also different in some form or another to the coupés. GT Spirit delivers an achingly beautiful scaled model version of the roadster in th finest detail. It joins a version in sliver and a CLK Coupé also in silver to make a threesome of exceptional models GT826 | Scale 1:18 Status: Mid 2021

Otto Mobile

Renault Clio 3 RS RB7 This striking little hot hatch was built to commemorate Red Bull Racing winning two Formula 1 titles in 2010 and 2011. Swathed in Etoilé Black body color with popping accents in Sirius Yellow. The pocket rocked is tuned by Renault Sports to blow 203hp out it’s 2ltr engine. Sports a chequred flag on the roof and Red Bull Racing logos on the doors. Otto Models pays a pretty homage to the real car with this carefully replicated model. It also brings together your love of Red Bull, racing and road cars. OT884 | Scale 1:18 Status: Available

MSZ Metal Speed Zone

Toyota Supra (US Spec) This bright yellow 2021 Supra zooms in from MSZ and their range of action toys. These fully-licensed models come with two different door opening sounds, push down or pullback action activated engine/drive-away sounds are sure to thrill the budding collectors in all of us. These are ideal for kids (and adults) that actually like to play with their cars and have them making a glorious ruckus in the house. Models have opening parts and rubber tires. Herpa Miniaturmodelle

U.S. Air Force Lockheed Martin F-16C Fighting Falcon 64th Aggressor Squadron, Nellis Air Base “Wraith” Herpa has one of the most interesting and varied aircraft selections that we’ve experienced so far (please feel free to correct us) in the span of looking for brands that cover the winged scale models. In this myriad selection, they sent us this 1/200 scale, nicely detailed F-16C multi-role all-weather fighter belonging to the 64th Aggressor Squadron, part of the 57th Group. This particular squad has been around since 1941 with a long history and during the Cold War was primarily designated to teach Russian air combat tactics to American pilots. Clad in matte black, with the red marking across the aircraft. It carries the WA designation and the black/ yellow tail stripes. Scale 1:200 Status: Available

Tomica Limited Vintage Neo

Ferrari 412 Just when we thought that TLV-N Ferraris couldn’t get any more exotic, they unveil the 412 in light blue and black. The 412 evolved from the Ferrari 365 GT4 2+2 which debuted 1972. The 412 refers to the engine displacement. This was one of the first models offered with an automatic shift. The vastly improved 412 was made from 1985 to 1989 and at the end was one of the longest produced models in the Ferrari line. Tomica offers this in two colors and with opening rear engine bay so you can view the V12 mounted in the... er... front. The models may (or may not) show up with some changes. Side mirrors and front license plates are user-installed parts. Scale 1:64 Status: August 2021

HOT PICKS FOR YOU

I STILL PLAY WITH CARS This is an admission all car collectors will make, and with good reason. It is hard not be an enthusiast of these VW vans. Especially, when there are such great options to choose from. Another cool thing about them is, for the 70’s and 80’s child they hold powerful nostalgia which makes us feel like kids again.

Schuco is changing gears and bringing in their own little signature spice to the game. Lowriders are going to be big this year and Schuco have got a whole slew of VW transporter vans lowered and ready to be released. These releases will also be with many different collaborators in the industry, so get ready to ruin your monthly budget.

This one is the very first Low Rider to hit the shelves and is an instant hit. Lowered stance gives it that F&F vibe while retaining that classic VW van nostalgia, retro colors that make it stand out in contrast and of course the cool little slogan emblazoned on the side that rings true for all of us,

‘I STILL PLAY WITH CARS’

DIECASTING COUCH Hot Wheels Basic

Raijin Express The model is a glowing tribute to the “Dekotora” truck scene in Japan that is quite otherworldly. Wildy decorated and brightly lit both inside and out, they have become a hugely popular sub-culture in Japan since the mid 1970s. Raijin is the God of lightning, thunder and storms in Japanese mythology and the Shinto religion, and some of you also may know him as Raiden. The tampo features the classic tsunami, Mt Fuji , Cherry blossoms and scale pattern that is very Japanese. Lots of chrome, just like the real ones. This model was one of Ryu Asada’s (1978-2021) final designs and we think its a great homage to him and the culture he was trying to promote. He’s eye for detail can be seen on this casting and we can safely say that this will be an very popular basic model that will be played with a lot. Scale: 1:64 Status: Released

Matchbox

Best of Europe - UK Matchbox’s much touted return to Europe brings with it a lot of country specific assortments. There will be many to choose from, Selections from both the UK and Germany are hitting retailers as we speak. The UK assortment includes the oft-used Land Rover Defender 110. Others were a Jaguar, Mini Cooper, a Black Cab and a fire engine. Numbering is odd, so we can wait and see what’s going to fill those slots. Scale: 1:64 Status: Released

Corgi Showcase

Sporting Triumph collection. Stag, Spitfire, TR6 Corgi releases a trio of beautiful cars from the Triumph marque. These classic British icons were wildly popular in their heyday. The luxury GT racer Stag in Emerald Green, the little zoomer Spitfire decked out in Damson and of course the stylishly handsome TR6 in Royal Blue. Many of these cars saw production from the 1950s to about the mid 1980s and are still sought after by collectors across the world. Corgi presents these three in a upscale looking black box with the Triumph logo emblazoned on the top. If you love British cars, then this is for you. Scale 1:43 Status: Coming Soon

We have been waiting for a while to get our hands on these and our patience has been rewarded! WELCOME to our TUNER WORLD! It’s like Jurassic World but with tuning parts instead of dinosaurs. Majorette TuneUp’s are loads of fun and full of creative potential.

CASTING REMARKS As you can see, we had loads of fun setting up this shoot and putting the pieces together experimenting and getting lost in the madness. Apart from the fun of being able to play in your own version of Tokyo Drift these extra body kits give customizers some quick options to paint the way they want and come up with some cool variations of their own. The entire set consists of 18 cars up for collection with varying degrees of availability. One ‘Ultra Rare’ car which will be hard to come by, ‘Super rare’ cars which are a degree less harder to get, followed by ‘rare’ cars and finally the ‘COOL’ cars which are like mainliners.

CASTING REMARKS

APRIL 2021

CASTHEADS MAGAZINE

The Tune Up’s come in a hexagon shaped package held together by a small twist lock at the top. Once you get the plastic wrapping off you can slip the token out and see what you’ve got, SURPRISE!!! Inside you get 7 things. The car, tuning part, accessory, sticker sheet, flyer, collectors’ box and token. Let the trading and exchanging begin! Maybe you can score yourself the Ultra Rare one.

Out of the 18 cars we received there were a few that really stood out for us and those are the ones that get their 15 minutes of fame. I wouldn’t be surprised if this doesn’t start a frenzy. Majorette could also make a very cool income concentrating on the modifying market with spare parts and accessories sold separately. TOYOTA GT86 HACHI-ROKU : ULTRA RARE

FORD 150 RAPTOR CROSS RACER : SUPER RARE

LAMBORGHINI URUS ITALIAN TRAVEL : RARE

Of course we pulled this one in. It is Ultra Rare and we love the two tone paintwork, matte finish and dual colored wheel rims. Comes with a yellow transparent aero body package and wide rubber wheels. The bonnet is also detachable. The color combination is very classy.

A favorite in the Majorette casting line up comes with a really nice burnt Orange metallic finish matched with burnt Orange rims. The tinted glass is also a nice touch. The wide wheel accessories look stunning on this and really fills out the bad boy image.

The ultimate family tuner. Matt Gold paint and black body kit this SUV is ready to rumble. Just slip on the roof luggage rack and we are good to go. If you already have an AirStream trailer also done by Majorette you can slip that on at the back for added travel vibes.

CASTING REMARKS TOYOTA HI-ACE SMOKING ACE : RARE

SUZUKI JIMNY NIGHT CRUISE : RARE

LAMBORGHINI URUS MOUNTAIN RACER : COOL

The Asian Van Fan Bois are gonna rip up the aisles for this one. The HiAce is already in big demand but this comes with a Matt red metallic paint, Japanese speed graphics and Gold rims. It comes with a grey Aero body kit and roof spoiler, but, with a little ingenuity one could add a bit of detail to the body kit and make this look stunning. This is the rare version but there is also a ‘Cool’ version as well.

Small in size, big in demand the Suzuki JIMNY has driven into the hearts of tiny jeep lovers and model car collectors around the world. The Tuner set actually comes with 3 JIMNY models in different categories. This is from the ‘RARE’ category and we love the color combo on this.

The second Lambo can be found in the ‘COOL’ car category and sports a very dark and deep grey with red racing livery and red racing accessories. It comes with a bodykit and canoe for the hood. You can also switch the parts around and take the black accessories from the other URUS and put it on this to make it look even more badass.

RENAULT MEGANE RS MEGA SHOCK : COOL

DODGE CHARGER R/T RUBBER BURN : COOL

FORD F150 RAPTOR CASTHEADS MEDIA MACHINE : CONCEPT

We are really glad this comes in the commonly found variants because this is such a cool car painted with nice livery tampos. Its also shockingly the only Renault to make it into the collection. Once the tuner accessories are added on, the car looks mean and badass. I would really like to see what our CustomWerks Dept would do to the body kit.

More muscle madness this time in the shape of the retro Dodge Charger. This comes with a side exhaust, drag strip rear wind diffuser AND a supercharger engine to go in place of the stock hood. The collection has two variants and if you can get both you mix and match the parts as well.

DODGE CHARGER R/T DRAG STAR : RARE

K C A ST STORE IT IT!

This is what makes the TUNERup’s series full of potential, The ability to add on these parts to other majorette cars and give them a bit of a modified boost. We really like the wide tire option of being able to slip on rubber wheels to existing plastic wheels. And that’s what we did with our matte black Raptor. We added rubber wides to the wheels and used some of stickers that came with the other cars. The result is this cool looking beast we have dubbed our media machine

All the cars come inside a neat blue container that can be used to store your Frankenstein beast and stacked easily on top of each other. With 18 cars to collect it is very thoughtful of Majorette to also provide a storage option as well.

CASTHEADS MAGAZINE

One of those cars that have faced a lot of criticism about its design not living up to its heritage and how the designers have over thought the design and a whole lot of blah blah blah. We get that some designs are very hard to update, especially something like the Supra 2000GT which is a stunning EVERGREEN design. I was also once an unbeliever but believe it or not my conversion came in the form of a MINI GT with of course the PANDEM body kit and as I continued to stare intensely at this model, I couldn’t help but wonder whether I had been wrong all along. That’s right, a humble diecast experience gave me new perspective and a change of heart.

TOYOTA SUPRA GAZOO RACING PANDEM MINIGT -SCALE 1/64

This is a lovely version by MINI GT but if you have seen their previous PANDEM’s then you really are not missing much. This is a PANDEM collectors’ piece, and I doubt too many collectors will pick this despite the quality and detail. We personally like it and voted it onto the couch because of its clean and simple looks.

With the ADVAN livery version just out this is looking like another version that will get snapped up pretty quickly. MINI GT have a pretty good reputation for fantastic paint finishes and so this looks like a nice one to pack in on the shelf.

This Black version with red rims is super slick and the release of this is eagerly awaited in the office. It really looks badass and mean especially with the old school looking straight aero wing at the back, this one has YAKUZA mode switched on…not to be trifled with.

CASTING REMARKS Honestly, we don’t know what spreads faster globally, a pandemic virus or Japanese pop culture, but at least the latter is way more fun. You would have to be living in another galaxy if you have managed to go through life without hearing about or seeing anything to do with the famous Japanese cartoon character Hello Kitty.

If loud JDM drift cars are your thing, this is the ultimate collectible to have! This is about as JDM as sushi. We love the color and the speckled paint pops like candy floss riding on mirrors. Low rider, large rim wheels with so much chrome paint you could bounce alien signals back into space and protect your brainwaves.

But at the end of the day, what really stands out is an R-34 in bright pink with Hello Kitty Livery. It’s like watching Godzilla do swan lake in a Pink Tutu… its so very wrong yet, intriguing to the point that, you can’t tear your eyes away.

Hotwheels is not one to shy away from pop culture from any country. So unsurprisingly, in of their Modern Classics series they featured a Hello Kitty Honda Civic EG which was a popular model at around the same time as Hello Kitty’s popularity. Trust Hotwheels to drop a little bit of an easter egg into their design.

PORSCHE 918 SPYDER WEISSACH TRACK TUNED MAISTO -SCALE 1/24

For those who don’t know and haven’t googled it already, the ‘Weissach’ Department sits deep within the recesses of Porsche R&D producing magical science thingys that make Porsche’s go faster and faster. Once in a while though, a team gets out and they create A MONSTER. But with German flair. They set themselves an impossible task. Make it faster, without changing anything, remove the extras and charge more. Simple. First, replace everything that can be replaced with carbon fiber, like the pillars, dashboard, seats etc. Next, make the wheels lighter with magnesium alloy. Finally, remove extras like ac, radio, door handles and charge more.

CASTING REMARKS

MAISTOs 1/24 scale version isn’t pricey but comes with Carbon pillars, magnesium looking rims, the luminous green brake calipers usually worn by their e-hybrids. Opening doors give access to a detailed interior. In fact, the interior is one of the reasons the car made the couch. There is a lot of discourse about quality and yes, we are experienced enough to tell you that this is nowhere close to an AutoArt or similar. But if you want it you can have it right now, without selling the kidney.

CASTHEADS MAGAZINE

MAZDA RX-7 FD

Long live the Fast and Furious franchise and its ever-engaging production of cars we want to own in our collections. This latest lot from Hot wheels has some killer hits and one near miss. First in the set is the RX-7 driven by Orange Julius in the second installment of the franchise. Good job on copying the paint color and livery.

Even better job on landing a set of chromed out, 5 spoke, deep dish rim set to get it as close to the original as possible. And of course, premium means rubber wheels with no chance of drifting on the coffee table.

NISSAN 240 SX

This model didn’t see too much action in the series except for Letty’s red SX240 in the first movie (not the same livery) However if you are a fan of Japanese drift cars and the madness their rear wheel drive cars could bring in the 80’s and 90’s this is one of the icons.

CASTING REMARKS

A fantastic job has been done on this and this is one of the hits we were talking about. Ice gold paint base with some ‘wanna go fast’ graphics but the ride height is sexy, great rim choice and pretty paint job on the font and rear. HotWheels really did justice to this car.

NISSAN SILVIA S15 This is the second ‘hit’ in the series and we love the gun metal grey + black combination. We also love how HW’s kept this plain and simple without excessive graphics. They’ve kept the ride height nice and low, light tampos back and front and again another good choice on the rims. The Silvia S15 made a few appearances in a few F&F films and this one looks specifically a lot like the one used in Fast & Furious without the decals. We’ve seen a lot of SILVIA’s from Hot wheels but this one is the classiest of them all. We could see why this would be a popular car to hoard.

SUBARU WRX STi Sadly, with so much potential this was the big miss in the set. It’s so plain it looks like it was made to be used for custom jobs and the tampos are just so grainy and illegible. It is sad because the casting is quite good but everything else has let it down. The perfect nondescript car for someone like Mr. Nobody in the movie Fate of The Furious.

For a person who loves the art that goes into mods and tuning, the present is an awesome time to be in. Brands like Rauf Welt Begriff have been around long enough to hit that professional stride of going from indie brand to an international brand of inspiration.

US ON! Giving way to other upcoming brands such as PRIOR Design to shine and claw their way to fame in a fast becoming highly competitive world of car modifying and tuning. Thankfully GT Spirit shines forth with 1/18 releases from both brands for us simple folk to enjoy and revel in the culture.

CASTING REMARKS CASTHEADS MAGAZINE

APRIL 2021

What’s interesting to note on these models if you are a heavy RWB collector is the evolution of the brand in little subtle ways. However just looking at this car on my desk I can see the appeal and how many owners see their RWB’s as work of art, and GT Spirit does a great job of bringing that feeling home.

Top: RWB all the way right down to the headlight. Great job by GT Spirit by bringing all its customers closer to the real thing. Bottom: The Abarth steering gets to me like a fish out of water driving an Escalade but that’s the beauty of RWB its anything YOU want it to be.

Right now, GT Spirit is on a bit of an RWB trend and they have quite a few new RWB releases out including an ASIA Exclusive which I’m trying desperately to get my hands on. Why? Because if this gorgeous George is anything to go by I think I’m about to start a super unhealthy obsession for GT Spirit RWB’s. Come, join me. German outfit PRIOR Design doesn’t go as wide as an RWB but they do have some nice body kits built to adorn many cars including quite a few Porsche models. Their business model is very different to RWB’s but for customers who have the cash who cares.

The same goes for car model collectors. If you have the cash to splash why not get what you like into the collection. The PD 964 is as beautiful and stunning as the RWB. A little less on the rough muscular look of the RWB and more refined. The sort of tuned Porsche you can park next to the Bentley. Through their modifications PRIOR Design have strived to keep a certain amount of integrity towards some of Porsches original designs without devolving away

into something complete different. It is disappointing that we don’t get to take a closer look inside even though GT Spirit does go though the trouble of having intricate interiors. Overall details are as usual perfectly fine. No blemishes in the paint work, the lights and light lens are clear and well defined. The wheels fit the wheel arches like a hand in a glove, body parts fitted on are fitted well, no loose parts or ill fitting bits. This a great car and great match for your new RWB. JAREK KWAS KWAŚNIAK

While looking for art to include in the RWB article I came across this talented artiste from Poland who has an insane love for all that is RWB. And if there is one thing I know for sure is that when you take a persons talent and skill and combine it with something you love and are passionate about the results are going nothing short of epic. This is exactly what I found with Jarek. A talented artist with a deep passion for RWB. If you would like to own a piece of Jarek’s art once you have gone through his site, you can by buying one of the t-shirts on sale that carry his art. Jarek’s uses t-shirts as a canvas and has put down some crazy designs. Some of them worn by Akira Nakai as well. If you are an RWB fan you will love all the stuff this guy has done.

Kvaszone Is Jarek’s primary portfolio site. A chance to see some of the projects he has worked on as well as all the info you would need about him or contact him should you need to get any work of this nature commissioned. I love his style and the way he draws Porsches.

manbehindmachine.com Is a site by Jarek totally dedicated to RWB and Akira Nakai through art. Here you can find posters done for Poland RWB events and builds, pictures of Jarek hanging out with Akira, breakdowns of some of his art pieces, downloads, basically a whole load of cool RWB art to check out online.

GREAT GAZOO subject to license approval

Tarmac has always promised to keep changing the game and try to bring collectors something new and fresh at least bi-monthly. Last round it was the wide body Hiace and this time round they are dropping two new castings in the shape of a pick up. Get ready to add some sweet 4x4 Toyota HILUX REVO action to your collection! There are going to be two version and both already look super exciting. One is going to be sporting the GAZOO RACING TEAM support colors with large wheels, raised suspension, front chassis guard plate, the complete works. This is going to be very epic.

GARAGE TORQUE CASTHEADS MAGAZINE

The other version is a lowered double cab meant more for street truck racing covered in a TRD racing kit. I especially like the 6 Spoke TRD racing rims that are slightly deep as well they look excellent on this casting. Something tells me this is going to be quite a popular casting.

We do hope Tarmac Works continues to keeps pulling these little rabbits out of the hat giving us collectors more variety. So far they have done vans and trucks, dabbled in a bit of American Muscle and played a few Italian cards, wonder what’s next a transporter perhaps?

RWB SQUAD NO we didn’t get one and I couldn’t get one, so you might wonder why even talk about it. Its pretty much sold out and chances of getting one through retail is quite slim especially with shipping being what it is these days every time it changes hands the price will go up. So let this article be a story of regret a lesson to those who second guess themselves in this game. You can’t, it is brutal, it is tough IT IS…..LIMITED EDITION. Like most of you, I’m sure my decision not to pre-order this was predicated on a lack of funds at the time. The pandemic situation has not been kind to anyone, and the wolves are circling the wagons. Irrational decisions or purchases will not be tolerated. Solution? Slush fund, sometimes stashing away a little saving

for something like this might be a way to avoid disappointment. And no, this is NOT sound financial advice. Grease up your supplier. You have to get into his / her good books. Get to know them see what they like, see what you can supply them. If they like Star Wars, get premier tickets, or an expensive dessert dropped off once in a while will be well remembered on pre-order day. Of course, you have to be careful not to overdo it in case it becomes obvious, and you give them diabetes by accident.

Tantric Gift Giving – This is something you can do with your partner. Instead of instant gratification why not practice the fine art of delaying your pleasure. For example, instead of getting a present on your birthday, you save the moment and ask that your present be purchased at a different time or date, perhaps during a pre-order week. That way your gift will keep you in suspense and when the postman knocks on your door on that specific delivery day…. ecstasy. Next Time don’t miss out on something as good as this.

Dodge sports/muscle car models nomenclature sounds like they made a deal with the devil and are now delivering his daily drivers to him (or her) en masse. Demon. Hellcat. In the summer (or thereabouts) of 2016, Jada Toys reached out to a few auto/body designers to add more modified versions to their JDM Tuners range. They were looking to create some unorthodox models of existing cars and to create a bit of hype around the range. Enter Jon Sibal, a multifaceted and talented artist, renderer and design from SoCal. Jon has been involved in the automotive scene since the 90s and a professional designer/consultant for over a decade. He took on the project of doing some wild widebody ideas for both the 2002 Honda NSX Type R Japan Spec and the iconic 1973 Datsun 510. The Honda (or Acura for our American brethren) NSX was

going to be a mid-engined Halo car for the brand. Its begin its development in the mid 80s to compete with a slew of sports cars that were raking in the petro dollars. The NSX stood for New Sportscar eXperimental, and the designers put a 3.0l V6 and hoped that when the V-TECH kicked in, it would take on anything the Italians and Germans could throw at it. Lofty goals indeed. There were many iterations of the model since its launch in 1989. And boy was it a hit. Japan got its own special models and the NSX-R (Type-R) was one of them. For 2002, they made the Type-R even more special. Reduced weight and more power. One model lapped the Nürburgring in 7.52 beating a Ferrari which had 100 more horsepower.

So Jon approached the NSX with an eye for making the best wider and more race oriented that it already was. The wide wheel flares doubled the width of the tires, the thick ducktail, and the multitude of parking lights in the front and rear. It rolls on Bridgestone Potenza shoes and peacocks around in a Canary Yellow paint job with minimal decoration (we like em less embellished). Jada Toys has many delectable versions of this model plus also some in 1:60ish scale.

SUPER SNAKE SENIOR AND JUNIOR GT500 - SOLIDO This year Solido blesses us with two beautiful 2019 GT500 Mustangs in both racing red and of course the standard white with blue racing stripes. Both of these have come highly acclaimed and if there is one thing you will notice straight of the bat is SOLIDO’S quality has improved in leaps and bounds, and they are releasing some straight up goodness.

This new Mustang is really the icing on this year’s cake so far. Everything about it is just wonderful and slick and the differences between a more expensive GT Spirit and this are very subtle and minute. You would have to look very closely almost under a magnifying glass to see the differences.

CASTING REMARKS

The older 500 has been out for a while and in fact a newer version in dark blue with white racing stripes has been released for a while now. But at the same time it’s nice to see the older model and see how it stacks up against the newer one.

Similarly, the attention to detail and build quality is admirable to say the least. Its really nice to get cars that have such great build quality and that come in at a great price point like SOLIDO does. And one thing they are going to do this year, is increase their American muscle portfolio. Lucky us.

CASTING REMARKS CASTHEADS MAGAZINE

APRIL 2021

So. Lets start breaking this down. First of all, I love the color. Between this and GT Spirits Lime Grabber Green, I’m happy to have both. The red really stands out in the collection and if you really want to make this pop I would suggest a wax job would go a long way.

Fittings also look really good. As I mentioned earlier the headlight lens which is pretty tricky has be replicated fantastically as is the rear lights. The rear spoiler is attached to the car with realistic laser cut stands and not just a piece of hideous thick plastic. The grilles in the air vents look realistic, carbon fiber texture on the spoiler and the windows look tinted which give the car a nice edge.

The interior is super detailed right down to the colored screen for the entertainment system, well molded dashboard with intricate ac vents, colored gauges and tachometer displays turning steering wheel even the gear shifting disc has the gear number painted on it. Absolutely lovely details for the price.

The seats are Super Snake branded and is black with a bit of white trim and even the door interior have been made sure to have the opening handle and arm rest painted and detailed. It also clear to see in the pictures that the rims and the brake caliper are detailed as well.

CASTING REMARKS

If I had one choice to own a GT500 Shelby Super Snake 2019 model out of all that is out there, I would probably pick the red one by Solido I love the color and I can live with the very minor quirks. But what a great price point for such a great model.

Getting the older one also has advantages, like looking good in you collection and having your friends crow over the fact that you have such a fine selection of Mustangs in your stable.

SMALLER OPTION If 1/18 scale is not the size you can invest in right now, then maybe go for a smaller 1/64 option of the GT 350 by Tarmac Works. It comes in a re-sealable clam shell, metallic paint job with a single racing line down the center and nice set of wheels. This well definitely go well with your Mustang 1/64 range.

I HATE TO

MOVE IT MOVE IT!

Packing up to move is never a good time, even less so if you are a diecast collector. I knew I was in for a ton of work way before we started to get our current home ready to list for sale. My agent took one look at my wall of models and said, “oh yeah, all these cars have got to go!” Then she snapped a pic to text to her brother. I had already moved my collection once, having relocated from New England down to the south eastern corner of the US. I remember being so careful; making sure all doors and hoods were strapped down with the boxes stuffed to the brim with packing paper.

This time, I’m only moving to the next town over. I’m still being ultra careful but I’m not wasting my time wrapping up all of my cars in Saran Wrap. It’s kind of like the cliche about how you parent your first child versus your second child, you just don’t need to worry as much. My biggest problem with this move is that my collection had doubled, or dare I say, tripled since the last time!

I packed box, after box, after box until my home office looked like the ultimate box-fort. One by one all of my 1:18’s went back in their boxes, screwed down to their base plates. All of my loose Hot Wheels cars found their way into jammer cases, which got boxed up as well. I then had to bring everything to a storage locker, which makes me lie awake each night until moving day. How many mirrors have broken off? What if the storage unit gets too hot and damages my cars? Hopefully everything arrives safely at my new house, in which I will have my own dedicated office that I won’t have to share with my wife. That means full length shelves across every wall with everything on display! I get to redesign my photo booth which doesn’t need to take up half of my work desk anymore. The best part is, I’ll have a large doubledoor closet where I can hoard all of my boxes, which I hopefully won’t have to move again any time soon!

The early 60s

saw the birth of a new want in the driving public. Post WWII generation was just entering their twenties and wanted smaller, sportier cars that the rambling monoliths that was on the streets of America. Ford, Chrysler and Chevrolet, and others like AMC, was in the race to bring to market a more compact, sportier, yet affordable car to the growing (in every sense of the word) market. The first models to see the light of day was the Chevy Corvair and the AMC Rambler models in the early 60s. Ford decided that rather than a 2 seater roadster, they’ll go with a more spacious 2+4 (two doors, four seats) sports car that would appeal to a broader spectrum. To this end, they got John Najjar, a senior stylist and the person who was responsible for the Mustang I Concept in 1961 to get a sporty, zingy car from drawing board to tarmac.

The little two seater Mustang I concept had drawn much excitement when it was introduced. The look and one working prototype had blown the mind of the public everywhere it was shown. But it was vaporware, and with the world it was in, wasn’t every going to be anything more than a experimental model meant to be eye candy. But the visionary Lee Iacocca had other plans. He approved the building of a sportier coupe and let the team get started on what later became the real father of the Ford Mustang we all love today.

John, along with Eugene Bordinat and James Sherbourne got working on the model which later became known as the Mustang Concept II (or Project T5). The car was unveiled at Watkins Glen in the fall of 1963 to much acclaim on its looks and styling. A whirlwind press tour, along with presentations to public and potential buyers set the stage for what would later become the Ford Mustang (or the T5 in Germany… which is a whole other story)

ONE EIGHT SUPER SNAKE

CASTHEADS BUILDER’S BLOCK

This is one of the most exciting things to hit our media desks although unfortunately it did take its time. Being held up by a nervous customs agent it took us about a month to get this out and sadly not enough time to build it up for this month issue.

First: This is a 1/8 scale version of the Mustang GT 500 Super Snake tuned by Shelby Racing. It comes in 12 separate boxes that you can subscribe to on a monthly basis and with different monthly plans to choose from. Please take note that building this is going to take a lot of time and space, so do not be setting up in the kitchen you will only bring swift retributions upon yourself. Make sure you use a space that can be used as yours for a while. Remember this come in separate boxes monthly which means you are looking at about a years’ worth of project time.

A large table under a bright light will make life easier

Second: Build-ups are great fun because it gives you the opportunity of getting firsthand experience of what it’s like to build an actual car. In this case AGORA models gives you the opportunity of getting really up close and personal to a real classic. The detail is going to blow your mind and the minds of your friends when you present them with a 2 foot replica of a car they dream of having built by you. Trust me, if you like showing off your collection (who doesn’t) you are really going to enjoy showing this off.

If your collection of large-scale models hasn’t pushed your life partner over the edge, this will.

NEW CASTHEADS FEATURE CASTHEADS MAGAZINE

It’s not just a static model that sits on your table. Which means you WILL have to find it a very special display space in your home like maybe as the centerpiece. If you own a garage this would be a perfect thing to have at the office.

APRIL 2021

It really does come loaded with a lot of cool features that make this labor of love all the more worthwhile. For starters think of all the interesting parts you get see and experience just because of the sheer size. Additionally, the car also comes with some working electronics that enable you to switch the headlights on, hear the car accelerate when the pedal is pushed, working brake pedal with stop lights, working horn when you press the horn button, functioning taillights even the body paint has been matched to the original Dupont paint codes.

it’s no wonder the customs department took some time to clear this.

CASTHEADS BUILDER’S BLOCK

Even the mechanical functions and features are quite epic. Of course it is a complete opening model, doors, hood and trunk but then beyond that you’ll find the seats are made with the same soft PVC material as the original, the rear seats fold forward so that you can extend the trunk space, operational steering column and of course a very highly detailed engine that look so realistic you’d half expect it to start. Even the wheels have been faithfully replicated from Goodyear’s thunderbolt tires.

1/8 Build-ups are the ultimate models to own if you are looking for the closest to the real thing.

This specific version of the FOX Body Mustang is actually the 1989 Mustang GT which replaced the Mustang SVT Cobra for a while. This was also the year that Mustang celebrated 25years of horses coming out of the FORD stable. Making it a special anniversary model.

Curiously, while doing my research on the Fox body mustang there was one thing stood out between this model by JADA and the pictures I was seeing online. And, that is the intake on this model is actually found on the older fox body models whereas this model was produced with a smaller air intake on the hood.

There were a few examples of this model with the larger intake on the hood and most of them were for racing. It is possible that the BIG TIME MUSCLE version was modeled on a GT racing version

CASTED BY JADA

JADA toys have done their usual good job on this and their Big Time Muscles series as really staring to grab some attention. In fact, there is back talk about these Fox body Mustangs going up in value specially for the black and silver version. This, however, is NOT insider information it’s just chatter that we pick up over the internet. So please don’t buy one and try to re-sell it for a billion times more on eBay. The model is not bad at all, you get what you have to come to expect of JADA models, all opening parts, low tires with fat drag strip racing types in the rear. Interior wise the detail is a little lacking and personally I feel like there is way to much chrome and maybe could have gone another way. The engine has been chromed out as well but I’m sure that if it really upsets you there are places now that can repaint the engine to look a little more realistic. The black 80’s 5-spoke rims that subtly hide the red disc brake caliper on the inside are very period correct.

The JADA Big Time Muscle range is quite extensive, and we encourage you to have a look at the their range for some really nice cars like the Dodge Charger Daytona.

Have you ever wanted to own a specific diecast car, which you saw in a movie or in real life? Or are you getting bored of having the same car as everyone else has in their collection and want something different? Or perhaps the car itself is good, but it has no headlights, taillights, grille or any other detail added? Well, this is where some of us choose to take that bold step and change its appearance (with the intent of making it better!) This is the first step to customizing that most of us have taken as kids or adults. The following series of articles will guide you through the basics of diecast car customizing. A culmination of things I’ve learned through trial and error during my last few years in the hobby. As I have never watched a ‘How to’ video, you can apply any other methods out there in combination to create your own style. It is a very satisfying experience to be able to successfully complete a diecast to your expectations. But be wary, the road to perfection is long. It involves lots of trial and error, tons of patience and some degree of skill. Once you build up your skill level, you will realize you are able to turn out beautiful pieces of art using your own knowhow and own experiences. The basics needed for customizing depends on the type of work you intend to do. If you don’t have any of these, then a quick visit to your hardware or stationary store will be needed. In this edition we will look at adding detail to a diecast car. The following are needed:

You would need a small amount of paint for detailing, usually no more than a milliliter or two per 1/64 car. It is highly recommended that you attempt our first few runs on trial cars. Once you are comfortable enough, move on to your prized possessions. Be extremely cautious though, permanent paints are unforgiving when it comes to mistakes. The only real remedy is to cover up the botched area with the identical color as the body, which in some cases is impossible.

IAN’S CUSTOM WERKS First set yourself up a well-lit work space. A bright overhead lamp is a must. Second use a medium to hold the casting in place. Personally, I hold it in my other hand or secure it to the table using polymer clay. Have the Thinner and all other items within arm’s reach. Remember to wash out the brush in the thinner container and wipe it clean when changing colors. Now to work!

The casting I’m using here is a Hot wheels Datsun 510 wagon. First Identify areas of the face that need to be in black. In this case it is the Grille and surrounding headlamp areas. As this is a wider area, I will be using the brush. Pour a capful (10-15 ml) of thinner into the container. Next dab the brush into the paint and apply it on to the pallet. Using the same brush, dip it into the thinner and mix it with the dab of paint on the pallet. carefully paint the identified sections of the car in black.

(Tip: adjust the amount of thinner to paint so it’s not too watery or thick. A few experimental rounds and you will know what works for you).

IAN’S CUSTOM WERKS

CASTHEADS MAGAZINE

APRIL 2021

Once dry, you can color the headlight area in silver. You may use the permanent marker or paint to do this. A simple press of the marker tip and you will realize the amount of pressure you need for the lamp to be the correct size.

Be patient, work slow and steady. I recommend completing the outline first, and then filling the center. Once complete, let it dry for an hour or so. If you find paint getting onto areas unintended, it is best that you cover those areas with masking tape. Cut the tape according to the contours/outline of the section you are painting. Then paint the exposed section with the paint at the correct consistency.

Use the black marker to add detail and correct any issues on relevant surfaces.

Taillights, in addition to this need to be covered up with the red permanent marker. That gives it a realistic red reflective appearance.

Once you are confident enough, you can attempt to work on other chrome parts as seen on the original car. Keep in mind though, mistakes can happen, no matter how experienced you are!

IAN’S CUSTOM WERKS

Ian’s Custom Werks EW ALL N

Having Orange and Yellow paint will enable you to detail signal and fog lamps too. In this instance the marker used for the headlights is fairly worn. A new one will produce much better results, as it will leave the print of a perfect circle.

If the end result is still not satisfactory, don’t fret! Be patient and work at it. When you are dealing with such scales manually there will be imperfections. A physical visually acceptable custom is the real deal, not a zoomed in hi-definition image. But if you are bothered about the latter, then there’s a way out, which I will discuss in the coming months.

Until then, stay safe and happy customizing!

“the exchange went off perfectly he sAID he didn’t know what was in the box, i think he knew and what he saw scared him....a lot”

What's in the Box? We have gotten a few figures from other manufacturers, but this is the first time a proper presentaion has been made for 1:64 figures.

“as the car disappeared over the horizon i was left to ponder for a moment a question that was nagging me at the back of my head...I knew there may never be an answer and I was mentally prepared for that but the question is, why doesn’t he change his hoodie as often as he changes his cars?”

A matte black sleeve holds a textured box with a silver stamped logo. And when you open the box, you are greeted with a dusky Parisian backdrop. The figures are set into a padded lining topped with a base that can be used as a diorama. Quite ingenious.

We look forward to more dark rendezvous with Scalite soon!

WITH A GREAT

A collective from Indonesia causing a revolution in Hot Wheels customs...

APRIL 2021

CUSTOMS OFFICE

Many of you who lurk in Hot Wheels collector/ customizer groups should by now know of Rebel Colony or at least have heard of them and their customs. If you haven’t, then here’s an opportunity to see some of their bizarre yet strangely attractive (so strange you can’t tear your eyes of them) custom work, from a rubber ducky Batman/Joker/Hulk/Spawn to some weirdly wonderful Fast and Furious models. Hailing from the diecast mad nation of Indonesia, these guys put a otherworldly spin on customs. Also they are the recipients of several awards, including the Indonesia Customs Convention II award for their creations. I caught up with the lead rebel, Dody Octavian, who’s from Sragan in Java, to talk about the work they do. Lance Muller: What is your inspiration for your customs? Dody Octavian: I get a lot of inspiration from my custom ... it all started when I really wanted to have a custom hot wheels but I don’t have enough money to buy them so I have to try to be able to make them. I learn a lot from magazines, Instagram, Facebook , and from various media... that’s where I get a lot of references for my custom .. I really like it custom US culture... by adding figures for custom hot wheels I make it look different. LM: What collectors think about your customs DO: So far they really like it... even some collectors keep more than 10pcs of our custom items They say our custom is different from others... some say it’s scary.. some say cute. I’m happy to be part of their collection.

CUSTOMS OFFICE LM: What are your future plans DO: We have a dream that someday someone will work with us to make our custom even better known. Maybe in terms of funding, marketing, and production. It’s really fun what you do can be enjoyed by many people, in this case your job is owned by all collectors. LM: You recently won a very prestigious award at the Indonesia Customs Convetions II, can you tell me something about it? DO: For the past Four years we have been participating in custom hot wheels competitions both online and offline and we have received many awards. This award is a spirit for me to do even better work. I dedicate it to God, my friends, colleagues, and family who have supported us in our work. Without them we would not have achieved this kind of achievement.

Thank Dody and everybody at Rebel Colony. It was great to have featured you in this issue. We look forward to more from you guys in the future. You can follow them on IG @rebel.colony_indonesia for more of their kickass customs
