Editor’s Notes

Nigel

J DE ZILWA

I often wonder, how many people take the time, to read the editor’s note. We have two. The preceding two months have been quite exciting, and I must admit the highlight of our lives these days is putting this magazine together. So please feel free to send us your thoughts on how we can improve or just praise us for all the hard unfair work we must do, to bring you a magazine full of disgustingly beautiful models. Don’t forget in the world of unfairness we also have our YouTube channel, Instagram channel, our Facebook Page, IGTV and some really interesting tie ups and giveaways both in the magazine and out. So, lock and load this is Issue 2

August 2018

Lance

K M Ü LLE R

The first issue was quite a watershed in our lives as avid lovers of all things diecast. It enabled us to share a lot of information with fellow collectors, convert a few sceptics to get into this awesome life and may have even helped some more change direction. But we must give thanks to all those who supported us, both overtly and covertly, to get it published and have it well received all over the world. Thank you all for your support however minute, as it has enabled us to get to the second issue. This issue we bring more news, models and articles spanning the globe, from boutique diecast manufacturers to the global giants and everything in between. Nigel and I have a vision, to make CastHeads Magazine the benchmark for diecast collectors all over the world. One issue at a time. And we can do that only with your support. So, enjoy our labor of love, download it, share it and talk about it.

New Releases & Hot Picks

Hot Wheels Retro Entertainment

Ghost Rider's Dodge Charger One of the most anticipated new models from the Retro Entertainment collection thats being released is Ghost Rider's (Robbie Reyes) 1969 Dodge Charger (Hell Charger). Best thing about it is that the flames around the sides and on the engine are removeable! While the orange Real Riders (RR5SP) looks menacing while the flames are on, they tend to not be the most good looking with them off. While this will stay in the blister pack with most collectors, the ones who do DLM will enjoy the car in its entirety. Chrome accents on the windshield and window linings, metal front grille and the "R/T" tampo on the front. Scale: 1:64 Status: Available

GreenLight Collectibles - Hollywood Series 21

Sarah Connor’s 1983 Jeep CJ-7 Renegade Seems like it wasn't only the T-800 who uttered the immortal line "I'll be back!" Greenlight Collecitbles brings to life Sarah Connor's ride in the first movie to life in a quite well-detailed Jeep CJ-7 Renegade. Featuring classic 80's livery, black off-road tires wrapped around white rims and featuring even the exact license plates. Scale 1:43 Status: Available October 2018 www.greenlighttoys.com

TSM Models - Scale43

McLaren Senna (Victory Grey) True Scale Miniatures brings you the new hypercar from McLaren. Named after the famed drive Ayrton Senna, the car harbours insane speeds, stealth good looks, does 0-100 in 2.7 seconds and costs a cool 1.2m dollars. However, the TSM Scale43 costs considerably less, still looks amazing in any collection. Also comes in Mira Orange Scale 1:43 Status: Available now

"This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbithole goes" Morpheus

Movies and cars go together like ice cream on a hot waffle. It’s exciting and thrilling but at the same time you want to savour scenes in super slow motion and stretch the moment on forever… ok too much. But yes, cars in movies and onscreen have been the stuff of legends for many decades.

Who can forget waiting for that half an hour to watch a talking '82 Pontiac Trans-Am, or the way Bond cars made Aston Martin a household name. From Bullit to the Blues Brothers to the Memphis Raines rampage to BABY Drivers, car chases, races and demonic possession movies have made cars stars and icons to rival the actual actors.

Greenlight Collectibles have been churning out a steady stream of Hollywood cars and look to be giving Hotwheels Screen Classics a hard-competitive time. Clearly Greenlight isn’t mucking about AND to add insult to injury, they tend to follow up their 1:64 lines with larger variations. Whaaaaat!!

SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT (1977)

The A-team (1983-1987)

The matrix (1999)

"For the money, for the glory, and for the fun... mostly for the money" – Bandit

"Hang on everybody, I want to try something I saw in a cartoon once!" – Murdock

"You've been living in a dream world, Neo." – Morpheus

The first ‘car’ movie I watched with my dad as a kid which is why when these two pieces were released by GL I was super pleased. I also do like the fact that these GL models have opening engine bonnets. 1977 Pontiac Trans Am 1977 Pontiac LeMans The details on the Trans Am are perfect enough to evoke nostalgia, from the Phoenix on the hood to the BANDIT ONE plate all markers of some great memories. The Pontiac LeMans isn’t any different as far as detail goes, polished state trooper brown with speckled paint it certainly looks like the ‘law’

NBC loved it when this plan came together, and they rolled it for four seasons and 7 years much to our pleasure. We all wanted to be soldiers of fortune while some just wanted to be the ‘Face’. Naturally due to the show’s cult status the GMC Vandura made vans cool at the time (a Vanette is never cool) with its Black and Grey duotone, red stripe, black and red turbine mag wheels and rooftop spoiler. Greenlight recently revived this classic, with not just a 1:64 scale seen here but, a 1:18 version is also now available. Do we pity the fools? Hell No! Incidentally not all the GMC Vandura’s had a sunroof in the show, which caused continuity problems in certain episodes.

Back when the Wachowski’s were still brothers they wrote and directed a movie that was so mind-blowing people had to call in sick the next day just to wrap their head around this dystopian future that seemed all too real. Fortunately, we are not in the Matrix, or are we? Do you think, that’s air you’re breathing now? The quotes can go on forever much like the lines on the 1965 Lincoln Continental. A car so stately it was fit for the ‘one’. Another recent release from Greenlight with the opening bonnet, but I would have been happier if we had the opening suicide doors that we are more familiar with in the movie. It’s not like Trinity had popped the hood when they met. Like everything in The Matrix that is there for a reason, the AA 034 license plate on the Lincoln refers to the popular AA size batteries.

starsky & hutch (1975-1979)

john wick (2014)

Hutch: "Starsky. It's red." Starsky: "It's not red. It's candy apple red!"

"See ya tomorrow night, Eleanor, with your fine ass." – Donny

"You stole my car, and you killed my dog!" - John Wick

For petrolheads and castheads it’s a show about a red Ford Gran Torino known on set in the 70’s as striped tomato. A show about this beautiful car going around fictional Bay City and lots of unnecessary scenes with two annoying humans. There were other humans but mostly centered around two.

This movie was a cannonball run eye candy fest of a time. Lots of gorgeous cars being stolen, one very long destructive high-speed chase and Nicholas Cage trying very hard to impress Angelina Jolie with his acting skills.

If Jason Bourne and John Wick got into a fight who would win? You could send us an answer on our Facebook page if you like! While we ponder that deep question, lets us feast our eyes on John Wick’s ride. '69 Ford Mustang Mach 1 429.

In fact the one human called Starsky in the series real name Paul Glaser hated the car so much, that every time he drove it he would purposefully try and wreck it. He would constantly rant about how much he hated the car. BAD HUMAN!!! With GL however, its all love another well produced mini replica of a 4 wheeled icon.

The first two were entertaining. So how do you define an icon among 50 other established icons? You go rare. Shelby Mustang GT500 designed by Chip Foose rare. Only 12 made and 05 were destroyed during the movie production. Are you crying? There’s still 7 left somewhere. Sadly we were not too impressed with this casting, it looked a little sloppy, detail wise and one of the axles is not straight but it's Eleanor so we can easily forgive.

Now this casting we can get behind 100%. It looks great, the detail is pretty spot on, everything lines up well, I love it. If anyone took this from me I would destroy their whole family. The Dodge Charger SRT used in the later part is pretty standard but the wheels are pretty sick and my fav feature on this casting.

These are just a dip in the ocean compared to the full line up Greenlight has. And, you don’t need to be a hardcore diecast collector to appreciate or even procure these models, you can collect them just for being a part of movie legend. At CastHeads we just hope they keep on coming. NJDZ

CUSTOMS OFFICE Words + Pics | Vinoth Madivanan

I’ve always been interested with art. Art that applies to anything, to food, digital, advertising, branding and in this case, 1/64 cars. I wouldn’t consider myself as an avid car enthusiast but something about applying art into micro medium intrigues me. I have been customizing Hot Wheels for about five months now. The first time I came across was through my instagram’s explore tab and I stumbled upon the work of @atydpradana, an Indonesia customizer who predominantly

works on 1/64 off road scale models. On the same day I also stumbled @scalecustomskl’s work and I said to myself I can do both the rusty, gritty weathering and the clean decal based custom builds. Not long before this, I was indulged into 1/35 military scale models and I have learnt a handful of weathering techniques from YouTube and fellow hobbyists. So I started researching to gather some information on decals and the materials to use. Since I have always been a designer, I had the upper hand

of designing the decals and get it printed. And so it started. I don’t really have plans on exploring this hobby further as a business, but I have the interest on exploring more on customizing. I am also in the midst of learning to build much smaller parts for the cars like the engine and other accessories. Lastly, I would like to thank Brother Lance Muller for this great opportunity and I really appreciate what his team and him are doing in regards with growing the hobby. VM

MIGHTY

VIPER A GREAT AMERICAN CLASSIC

1989 was an exciting yet strange time for Bob Lutz, the new President of Dodge. On the one hand he had to keep the company successful with its lines of mini-vans and multipurpose vehicles but at the same needed something to put a smile back on to the American muscle enthusiast. Dodge had a reputation that was slowly slipping into soccer mom territory.

So, in 1989 at the January Detroit Motor Show, Dodge unveiled the Viper, which blew everybody’s pants off. By the end of the show, orders were in. The Viper HAD to be made and very quickly. So Lutz commissioned a team of 100 to make the VIPER a production reality.

Quite simply put, the Dodge Viper is the millennial muscle car. It bears all the hallmarks of modern sports car design while possessing the sheer grunt and bruising power of American torque.

They took a V10 Truck engine, got Lamborghini to redesign the engine block and heads in aluminum alloy and produced an engine that fired 400 horses out at 4,600 rpm and has a blistering 465lb ft of torque that took this machine and launched it from 0-60 in 4.1 seconds.

RT/10 The Original and not-so-cheap Dodge VIPER RT/10. Basically, if you saw one of these roll up in your rear-view mirror, you’d get out of the way pretty quick. This car is designed to intimidate on every level. When it was launched it was the fastest American Muscle Car in production.

The model by Bburago when it was under Italy is sumptuous . The metal speckled blue paint is a dream. The original came with two white stripes (not the band). Thankfully they were removed, and looks so much better now. The wheels turn easy the steering wheel works and the engine details are pretty good. But if you give that blue paint a polishing it looks stunning.

DODGE VIPER

2nd GEN SR II

The Second Generation SR II replaced the side exhausts with a single exhaust at the rear exiting through two large central tail pipes. This back pressure increased power to 415bhp and with the conversion of certain parts from steel to aluminum the car lost 30kg. This 1:64 scale model from Jonny Lightning is pretty, fantastic. The details at this scale are stunning, the car feels quite heavy and the hood locks in place when it's down. Definitely one for the collection if you get your hands on one.

HISS N BITS

A old snake goes to see his Doctor. "Doc, I need something for my eyes...can't see well these days". The Doc fixes him up with a pair of glasses and tells him to return in 2 weeks. The snake comes back in 2 weeks and tells the doctor he's very depressed. Doc says, "What's the problem...didn't the glasses help you?" "The glasses are fine doc, I just discovered I've been living with a water hose the past 2 years!"

With a major redesign in play the Third Generation VIPER was faster and lighter than before, however we feel that in the looks department Dodge slipped a bit. It felt like they were trying to tame the beast and make it more appealing to a less exciting audience. A Mamba package was introduced for the interior which did nothing considering the tamer outward appearance.

GEN.III The 1:24 scale model by Maisto isn’t too bad. The doors and the hood open. Under the hood you have the Viper’s classic V10 with red highlights. Our biggest gripe is the fact that the front wheels do not turn.

GEN 4 The Fourth Generation VIPER had more re-worked stuff done under the hood instead of body work. Up until now, the monstrous torque that kept increasing with every new generation was a bit of a problem for grip. Now, the VIPER had a new electronic engine control system that could monitor the crankshaft and cylinder positions six times during each firing. A new speed sensing GKN Viscolok limited slip differential helped with tire grip and the run-flat tires were replaced with Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires. The ACR (American Club Racer) version clocked a record time of 7.22.1 at the Nurburgring.

The HotWheels 1:64 ACR is one of those rare times you’ll get front tampo’s as well as speed graphics on the bonnet. The die detail isn’t too bad for a Hotwheels car with the body lines clearly defined and not getting lost in the smallness of the scale.

The venomous VIPER GTS-R is badged so, due to its manufacture in Europe. It also is the standard for which the GT2 was built upon. These cars were built for race pedigree and turned out to be fast as well as reliable on track, winning several FIA races in the GT classes. To celebrate, a 100 modified road legal versions were made with 460 Hp and 500lb -ft torque in the same color scheme, aerodynamics package and livery.

5 GEN th

The fifth Generation VIPER is once again a stunning visual of terror in a rear view mirror. All aluminum 8.4L V10 engine dropping 640 horses with 600lbs-ft torque controlled by a 6 speed manual gearbox and 6 million other things that turned a beast into a ballerina with a bazooka.

We especially like the fact that they went back to the front hinged bonnet as opposed to the rear hinged one of Gen 3. The GTS version is as premium as it gets, the Bournville of VIPERs and the rage is caged but it's still a VIPER that has a nasty bite.

On a happier note, this 1:24 scale by Maisto is spot on. It really is. We can’t stop looking at how beautiful this model is. True center piece worthy. The wheels don’t turn sideways either but the engine bay opens up to reveal the, mighty V10 powertrain and the interior is pretty detailed.

Sadly the last VIPER in production rolled off in 2017 maybe Dodge thought the VIPER should never go hybrid or electric and killed the snake. But there are many special package versions out there to discover and as long as we have Diecast models being made in abundance the

will be IMMORTAL!

Maisto Modern Muscle Series 1:24 Features : Low profile tires, Brembo brake calipers, detailed interior with 4 point harness seat belts, dual NOS tanks with regulators, opening engine bay and looks beautiful in bright orange.

There are race stories and there are legendary stories of races. The 1967 Sports Car Club of America's (SCCA) TransAmerican Sedan Series is one of those legendary stories. At the height of the Pony Car rivalries and the domination of racing by Mustangs and Camaros, the poor-cousin division of Ford Motors, Lincoln-Mercury, fielded two 1967 Mercury Cougars in the race, 98 driven by Dan Gurney and 15 driven by Rufus Parnell "Parnelli" Jones. They drove 300 miles in 114-degree weather through Green Valley, Texas and Gurney won the race by mere feet with Jones finishing third. The race is still spoken about in the American racing community. To immortalize these legendary racers, Sun Star Miniatures has released the iconic red and silver 1967 Mercury Cougar #15 driven by Jones 1580 in 1:18 scale from their American Collectibles selection for discerning collectors all over the world. Featuring an opening bonnet showing a well detailed 269cl V8 with a fourbarrel carb, opening doors and racing

seat with harnesses. The two-tone paint features all the decals and white “Mercury Cougar” on the rear panels, and “Parnelli Jones” written on the satin silver painted roof. Duo-tone two-piece steel rims are wrapped in solid rubber tires, and the front two can be articulated to set the car in dramatic action poses. The interior detail features the cage, black racing seat with period harness, and all the chrome bits as it was in the orginal car down to the black leather-wrapped steering and black knob on the shifter. This model is a perfect addition to any vintage American racing aficionados collection. It sits on a plinth with a recessed silver plate announcing the make and model. The base is also supported from all sides to ensure protection when stored. THE

TARMAC EFFECT

CASTHEADS IN CONVERSATION Talking to card-carrying Casthead

Tarmac Works is currently taking over the detailed model car world like a “tai fun” and is literally creating waves with its selection of 1:64, 1:43 and 1:18 offerings for collectors across the world. The models have become highly sought after and are usually sold out within a short span of release. We sat down with Felix Kwong to find out the secret of this success in the very crowded model car collectors world. Castheads Magazine: thank you for having us. Please tell us when you started and why the name “tarmac works”? TARMAC WORKS: Tarmac was started in 2015. All cars run on roads which are made of tarmac and this is why we use the word Tarmac as it always goes hand-in-hand with cars. CHM: From where did the idea to delve into the world of model cars come from?

"We live and breathe with model cars everyday and to make it a business and a career is dream fulfilling for us"

TW: Our team members including the management team are all model car collectors from many years so we wanted to do something that is out of our passion. We live and breathe with model cars everyday and to make it a business and a career is dream-fulfilling for us. CHM: You do a lot of fine tuning with existing models from famous brands, how does that work? TW: We spent a lot of time on research especially for race cars because there are many logos and design patterns. We want to be as authentic as we possibly can which is often a huge challenge especially with older racing models due to the lack of photos from different angles of the cars.

CHM: What models did you have the most fun working on? TW: It will always be our first 1/64 scale model which is the Honda Civic EG6. It was somewhat of a leap of faith to produce the first 1/64 model and we took a lot of time to work on every detail like the rims, tyres and interior. And when it finally came out and to see response of the collectors will always be something special to me. CHM: How’s the feedback been from The collectors all over the world? TW: The resonance we have created with collectors around the world have been quite fantastic. We also make a lot of effort to connect directly with our collectors either thru events or social media. We are constantly listening to their comments to improve on our current models or add different elements to future models. CHM: Whats on the cards for The rest of 2018? TW: The plan for 2018 has been at least one new tooling per month and we will also develop cars with manufacturers that we have not done before such as Subaru. We will also begin to

introduce accessories such as diorama and tools in 1/64 scale to expand our offerings beyond just cars. CHM: If you had one thing to tell your fans, what would it be? TW: It would be a big fat THANK YOU. It has been such a great feeling to have such a strong bunch of collectors growing together with us and we couldn’t have done it without each and everyone of them. CHM: Do you have an exclusive bit of news for our readers? TW: We will be hosting once again the MiniCar Festival in Malaysia on August 19th of this year. A special dinner will be added on August 18th for distributors and collectors with a very special “dinner model” to be handed to each guest. And then on September 29-30 will be our first-ever MiniCar Festival in Taichung, Taiwan. Awesome stuff. We would like to thank the Felix and the outstanding team from TARMAC WORKS for granting us this interview and of course for the amazing range of models that they are giving the collecting community across the world.

You can find more on TARMAC WORKS on www.tarmacworks.com and follow them on FB www.facebook.com/tarmacworks and IG @tarmacworks.

SETTING YOUR CAR FREE!

DIECAST DISPATCH Words + Pics + Design | Lance K Müller

Last issue, we spoke about what is DLM, and the pro’s and cons of setting your precious cars free from the blister. As much as we love to take cars out of their packaging, space constraints, dusty environments, and those lovely cards sometimes makes us wish we could get them back in the blister. Well let me show you a few ways to free them, and then put them back for storage or hanging them on the wall.

The Way of the Remover All you need for this is a very good nail polish remover. Put a decent amount of nail polish remover on the back of the card in a U-shape. This is to make sure that the top half of the blister stays attached to the card. The will enable you to put the car back in the blister and just store it away (Pic top). Or you can remove the blister totally and save the card and it separately for another day. Pros. Minimum effort as long as you don’t spill the remover around too much. You can keep the blister attached to the card. Cons. Not much except sometimes the card back will show some signs that resemble water damage. But proper drying immediately after removing will solve that. Won’t work on laminated cards like the larger blisters or clear plastic packaging.

The Slice and Dice Larger blisters, laminated cards and plastic packaging require you cutting into the blister or plastic. Laminated cards require careful cutting using

a paper knife. Make an inverted U-shape incision from the top to the left and right (Pic right) so that you preserve the bottom. This is true for Hot Wheels larger blisters, Greenlight Collectibles packaging and most others. Do so very carefully and slowly. Pros. Easy peasy removal and re-insertion. Cons. Well… you’ve cut into the plastic part of the package… there is no return from that.

3rd Party Cover The third and final is to use other commercially available packs for storing your cars once removed. There are single-car plastic boxes available for your car at hobby shops and online. You can also find Protector Cases for your Hot Wheels cards (top) from Aliexpress to multiple sellers on eBay. There are many types of cases to choose from. I hope this helped you to expand your knowledge on how to DLM your cars safely. There are many YouTube videos up that will show you how to DLM your cars safely. Await more dispatches in the coming issues. If you want to contribute or have any questions, please email castheads@gmail.com and we will try to accomadate you as much as we can, See you soon! LKM

Another big hobby was the electronic music, in which I was immersed from 1994 to 2008. Some examples: https://impressionsmartfusionband. bandcamp.com/

The most recent hobby is the scale car collection and photography. Thanks to my girl I re-started collecting in 2002, this time seriously. In the vitrines there are near to 400 models (some come, some others go), lately more focussed in 1/18 exotics, things that I probably will not see in the real life, but I can admire every day in this form. My favorite brand is AUTOart, they bring out a lot of these models.

these pages can work as a database for the visitors who are looking for a model in particular. Later in 2009 it was the time to create a forum focussed in scale models, and Diecast International Forum came into play: https://www.tapatalk.com/ groups/diecastinternational/ The characteristic that I appreciate more in a model is the fidelity of the shapes, so I usually try to get the

best replica available of each car, the one the represents better the real thing. I also add small details to the models to make them look better: air valves, painted details or by replacing emblems with metallic decals, for example. In the future I would like to take photos outside or with dioramas, to go a step further. What’s next? Who knows… AJR

Motorcycles have always meant freedom. It was one of the first modes of powered transport that a young person could get their hands on. It was almost a step from being a child to adulthood. My love affair with motorcycles was a natural progression from cycling around the village till I started working and then getting my own freedom beast. It has a certain sense of exhilaration about sitting on a hard leather seat moving faster than light with the wind in your face. But I am here to talk about another sense of exhilaration. And that is collecting diecast motorcycles. From vintage American Iron to the sleekest Italian beasts to Japanese icons are produced by most of the world’s diecast manufacturers in almost all scales. From 1:6 scale to 1:64.

Hot Wheels manufactures quite a few 1:64 models, from customs, street bikes, to speed to the ever popular 450HW dirt bike along with offerings from Matchbox and Tomica. While these are the basics, the detail gets better as they get larger.

Minichamps and True Scale Miniatures release some of the most detailed models, while Maisto and Bbuargo offers a wide variety that’s easy on the wallet and covers a wide range of bikes and tastes.

One of the finest Hot Wheels models that I have come across is the 100% Hot Wheels Harley Davidson Fat Boy. The casting is superb and to top it off comes in its own display case and rubber tires.

Maisto boasts one of the largest motorcycle selections. From Ducatis and MV Augusta, to Honda, Yamahas and to having one of the largest officially licensed Harley Davidson collections.

I’ve always been fascinated with Rallying and crosscountry racing f rom the time I got interested in motorsports. The legendary Paris-Dakar which pushes man and machine to the outer limits of endurance, the Monte Carlo which is precision and speed, and then the Rally Finland which requires so much finesse f rom the drivers. The Lancia marque has dominated this type of motorsports since its inception. From the early 70s to the late 90s and none has stood out quite like the Lancia Delta HF integrale 16V. Winning almost 11 races and 6 of them consecutively, the Lancia Delta has stood out among others as one of the finest WRC cars ever built.

I spoke to Sun Star about reviewing one of the models from their amazing range of Classic Rally cars. So that’s why Sun Star Miniatures sent the 1991 Rally Safari Kenya-winning Lancia Delta Integrale 16V #6 that was driven by Juha Kankkunen and J. Piironen (#3118), a super-limited edition run of just 3000 pieces. The car features the signature Martini Racing livery with the interior sporting the rollcage, five-point seatbelts on the period specific racing seats and a welldetailed front dashboard.

It comes with a certificate mentioning its number written by hand which is quite a personal touch. The underside features the front scratch plate and a not-too-detailed plastic base. Overall it’s a pretty decent model to show your love of classic rally cars.

The car is solidly constructed and weighs a bit. It’s fastened to the plinth by four struts and has the model name affixed via sticker.

Write to us at castheads@ gmail.com and let us know what you think we should review for the next issue, we'd love to hear f rom you. LKM

I can start off right now and tell you that when I first saw what these guys have to offer there was a debate in my head about whether this should be an article reviewing DNA Collectibles or should it be about what body organs one could sell just to procure a few pieces of art created for the serious collector or extreme car culture buff.

AN

INJECTION OF FRESH

DNA

WORDS + PICS + DESIGN | NIGEL J DE ZILWA

In 2017 four friends in Switzerland launched a brand that creates exclusive diecast models with an amazing attention to detail. And the price tag reflects that. However, that doesn’t mean the brand is created by bottom lines and profitability, instead its powered by passion and friendship producing a final product I feel well deserves the price tag and if that still doesn’t convince you the pure exclusivity of these models should.

“powered by passion and friendship producing a final product I feel well deserves the price”

Still in their inaugural year DNA Collectibles has models offered up in two scales, the decent sized 1:43 and the larger 1:18. Apart from their quality and detail the third thing that sets them apart from most other manufactures is their selection of models. In the 1:18 category they currently have 4 models.

SUBARU LEONE 1800 TURBO

Two of them are SAABs. Personally, I have never seen another brand making SAAB models which I often thought is a great pity. The other two models are three-wheeled cars that have somewhat of a niche cult-like following, The Bond Bug and the Fuldamobil S6. DNA Collectibles’ main focus in model choice are cars that you won’t see in the regular, and that’s super fine by us.

Do we w really need AN ANOTHER diecast co company that makes Lamb Lamborghini m models? ode NO!

Under the 1:43 category they have 3 models, a Subaru Leone 1800 Turbo, an Audi 200 Avant 20V Quattro and my personal favorite, the Volvo V70 XC which will be ready to ship this month.

SAAB’s last stand released as a concept in 2006, unfortunately SAAB didn’t last too long after and this was never produced. But on paper what a car. 2.8L Twin Turbocharged V6, all wheel drive and a 7 speed tiptronic gearbox with an engine that ran on pure ethanol. This was supposed to be SAAB’s return to pushing the boundaries of car design and technology.

SAAB

AERO X

Fortu Fortunately, DNA Collectibles have re-created this beauty to re-cre perfection and it’s being released perfe Downside… only 320 this month. m models will be produced, and it will mode retail online at around USD179. The detail is worth it. It is an exact replica of the concept car right replic down to the dashboard display.

Meticulously created with sick attention to detail from resin.

This is what Elon Musk’s dreams look like..

European design 2006. American Muscle catching up 2018

This, I’m dying to have. Again, a perfect replica of the last of the SAABs. Beautiful metallic lightening blue, with detachable roof DNA collectibles is keeping it real! Because, under the roof they have gone ‘FULL SCALE’ on everything. Fabric seatbelts, photoetched details even the headlights have the wipers.

SAAB

9-3 VIGGEN CONVERTIBLE

One of SAAB’s finest creations, taken from behind.

Currently on sale online only 350 of these have been produced and are heavily coveted. Another one of the reasons I really like DNA Collectibles is their base mounts are acrylic and yes it could get scratched easily but what a way to present such beautiful specimens, keeping it classy DNA!

This is the prototype model sent to us from DNA the final models have more details like radio screen and HUD in color

A very smart looking car...

First, this has nothing to do with 007. The Bond Bug was built, by a company called Bond Cars Ltd. Which became the Reliant Motor Company one of Jeremy Clarkson’s favorite brands to destroy. The Bond Bug was actually quite quick in comparison to the standard Mini that was also available at the time giving it considerable cult status.

RETRO REVIEW

The DAF 3300 Space Cab and Low Bed Trailer by Matchbox I cannot remember when I got this diecast. Best guess by my family would be when I was around 2 ½ or 3 years of age. Yet, these were instrumental in sparking a hobby (two, actually – model cars and model trains) that continue to this day. Where did this model come f rom? My mother cannot recall where it was purchased f rom. “Maybe Nastars”, she says. “Or maybe f rom shops down Main Street, Pettah, where your grandfather often went to buy toys for you”. The truck and trailer came as a set. Matchbox was quite popular in Sri Lanka – we are talking here about the early 90s. People

used to refer to almost any “dinky car” as Matchboxes, much like any SUV is still called a “Jeep” by some. HotWheels and Tomica came into the Sri Lankan toy scene much later. Battle scars adorn the painted metal body of the cab and trailer, the wheels have lost some of their “chrome paint” (but still roll freely) and the set clearly shows the travails of being played with, and enduring temper tantrums too. It has been driven ‘fast and furiously’ and smashed around too. Yes, I was a hot-tempered kid and my toys bore the brunt of it.

GUEST CASTHEAD Words + Pics | Ashraaq Wahab, Deputy Editor – Motor Magazine

The chassis on the truck and the panel holding the wheel axles at the bottom of the trailer are plastic - a type of hard plastic originating from that era, which one could easily mistake for metal! Everything from that era seems sturdier – even the metal has a chunky, sturdy feeling that current models just don’t pull off! Even though the paint is peeled off in places, there are no dents or deep scratches. Turning it over reveals the trailer is dated 1981, while the truck is dated 1987! Another interesting nugget is that the truck has “Made in Macau” stamped on the underside, while the trailer keeps mum about manufacturing location.

The model has that solid feel to it when you pick it up. Little details such as the twin airhorns and cab ventilator on the roof are cast in the metal itself! Impressive, for a 1:86 scale model. The doors do not open and the windows are tinted dark green. Will I restore this model to its former glory with a new paintjob and wheels? I don’t think so. It has sentimental value and the battle-scarred look has a sort of appeal to it as well. Having led a rough early life followed by some time in a drawer with other models, it can now be parked in hard-earned peace on my display shelf. AW

Lionel Racing 2017 CAMRY Martin Truex Jr.

So, for our first book review we chose ‘Go Faster’ The Graphic Design of Race Cars by Sven Voelker. As proper CastHeads we enjoyed every page, because it is a simple book about how design became an integral part of motorsports. Also, the cool thing about the creator of this book is that he uses a lot of examples using diecast cars.

He covers them in chalk to show the starkness of having absolutely no design and them compares them visually with the uncovered version which is an interesting way to drive home the point. The actual cars were our idea.

You’ll also find interesting racing trivia with regards to colors and designs. For example, do you know where ‘British Racing Green’ came from?

‘Go Faster’ is very visual and will take you all of two hours to enjoy the book in its entirety but, you will keep going back to it occasionally just to stroll through the pages and enjoy the designs and colors.

Initial D is a manga and anime series about a kid named Takumi Fujiwara who delivers tofu for his father’s business. He uses the family’s old Toyota AE86 Trueno to make the deliveries along the twisty, narrow roads of Mount Akina.

Driving these roads every night for years and his dad’s very strange but effective training ensured he was the fastest thing on the mountain.

I’m not an anime person. Before all of this, I had only watched Pokemon. My love for cars and Hot Wheels started in the mid 90s. The most

Gran Turismo 2 taught me a lot about tuning, the differences between car models and driving lines. What Initial D did was teach me finer details that I didn’t even think mattered. The technical accuracy of this show properly astounded me. They go in depth as to how engines react to your right foot, every gear change and how the suspension reacts to your steering. They talk about Limited Slip Differentials, weight transfer, late braking, oversteer and understeer.

I learned about cars was by playing Gran Turismo 2, watching Top Gear or reading magazines.

You don’t just learn about the differences between naturally aspirated and forced induction, you feel like it along with the characters during a race. My favourite thing about the show is the fact that they mostly used cars anyone that time could have owned and the fact that the characters were very grounded as well. Most of them are ordinary people who loved cars and racing but had ordinary jobs and relationships.

So let’s finally talk about the characters who drive some of my favorite cars from the series... We already know a bit about Takumi Fujiwara. He drives a black and white Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86 with the Fujiwara Tofu Shop logo on the driver side door. It was called Hachi-Roku in Japan which translates to Eighty-Six. The car started out pretty standard but was tweaked and fettled to perfection by Takumi’s dad, Bunta. The car goes through some major changes throughout the series including an engine transplant that allowed it to rev to 11,000rpm and develop 250hp, a 100hp more than it originally had. The iconic carbon hood was also added later er

Keisuke Takahashi, member of the Red Suns, drives a yellow Mazda FD RX7 Twinn Turbo. Being a bit of a hothead, he declared Takumi his rival after losing to him and his seemingly old AE86 in a race down Mount Akina. Keisuke and Takumi eventu-ally become good friends and team-mates. His RX7 went through even more changes throughout the series and become a full-fledged racing machine. chine. In its final form this car is, in my opinion, the best looking modified RX7 too date. date

Ryosuke Takahashi, also a member of the Red Suns and Keisuke’s older brother, drives a white Mazda FC RX7 Turbo II. Ryosuke is much more calm and collected, spends more time on a laptop analyzing race conditions, tracks and results. Don’t let that fool you though. There’s a reason his car is nicknamed “Akagi’s White Comet”. His car goes through one major change throughout th series to take part in one of the best races in the show. the

Vol.229 a short final battle

Bunta Fujiwara, Takumi’s hard-drinking and chain smoking dad, drives a blue Subaru Impreza WRX STI Type R in the anime (Dark metallic grey in the manga). After passing his beloved Hachi-Roku to his son, he bought the second-hand WRX as his daily driver. Being an ex-streetracer, he could be considered the best driver in the series if he wanted to prove it. He taught Takumi everything he knew and trained him using his very strange but effective method of making him deliver tofu along the mountain passes of Akina with an open cup of water in the Trueno’s cup-holder without spilling.

Mako Sato, from the team Impact Blue, drives a blue Nissan Sileighty. Essentially a Nissan 180SX with a Nissan Silvia’s front end on it, this machine was unbeatable nbeatable on their home turf. Mako’s skill behind the wheel isn’t ’t the only thing that makes Impact Blue formidable though. Her best friend and teammate, Sayuki, acts as her navigator during races similar to rally navigators.

Kyoichi Sudo, the leader of the team Emperor, drives a black Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III. A very calm and composed driver, he was the first person to officially beat Takumi. His closest rival would be Ryosuke, as the pair would constantly argue over racing theories and techniques whenever they met.

Vol.587 charisma awaking (pt.2)

I personally didn’t read the manga but I watched the show completely aand my love for it grew with every episode. As I started collecting aagain recently, a fleet of Initial D cars was foremost in mind. The TTomica Dream Series has a large range of 1/64 scale models if you w want to start small. If you want to invest a bit more, you can try Jada Toys and Kyosho for finer detailed 1/64 scale models. Hi-Story Ja hhas amazing 1/43 scale models and even when you go up to 1/24 sscale, you’re spoilt for choice with quite a lot of brands. Want a hhobby kit to piece together yourself? Aoshima and Fujimi kits are aavailable of various Initial D heroes.

For the ultimate Initial D fan though, I’d recommend going for AUTOart’s 1/18 Toyota AE86. I personally love the “Final Version” Trueno as it comes with the carbon fiber detailing on the hood and headlight covers. It’s even got working pop-up headlights thanks to a little switch under the front of the car. The engine bay and interiors come with amazing attention to detail as well. All this goodness does not come cheap of course. AUTOart has done this icon justice so you can forgive them for the steep asking price because what you get in return is highly detailed, miniature replica of an icon that you can admire on your desktop.
