Whether you’re staying for a few days or for a season, the Nation’s Oldest City has plenty to see and do – ensuring a fun-filled and memory-making trip for the entire family. To help you pack in as much as possible during your time in our beautiful city, we’ve put together a sevenday itinerary including the best of the best in where to go and what to see. DAY 1- HISTORY Grab breakfast at The Blue Hen Café in the historic Lincolnville neighborhood (we suggest the Zada Jane’s Stack) before a visit to Lightner Museum, which features a collection of antiquities from the American Gilded Age and is housed within the landmark Hotel Alcazar Building. Next, head across the street to Flagler College, a four-year liberal arts college located in the old Ponce de Leon Hotel, a luxury hotel built in 1888 by oil magnate and railroad pioneer Henry Flagler. The school is considered one of the finest examples of Spanish Renaissance architecture and offers daily tours. Next, delight your taste buds with a relaxing sit down lunch at Columbia Restaurant. Order a sangria and the restaurant’s signature “1905 Salad.” There is still plenty of daylight left, so stroll down King Street and stop in at Villa Zorayda Museum. Built in 1883 and inspired by the 12-century Moorish Alhambra Palace in Spain, the museum features unique antiques and artifacts from all over the world. For a unique twist on history, check out the Colonial Quarter and the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum. Afterwards, head to the Taberna del Caballo for some Sangria or Margaritas on the beautiful covered Patio. For dinner, try one of St. Augustine’s favorite hidden gems, Conrad’s Steakhouse. They offer steak, seafood, chicken, and the best paella this side of Spain. Paella must be ordered 24 hours in advance.

DAY 2 – THE BEACHES Today is all about sun and surf. St. Johns County is home to more than 42 miles of pristine, white sandy beaches. Café Eleven is a great spot to grab coffee and egg sandwiches to go. Try the Sunrise Sandwich

It costs $8 per vehicle to get in, but is well worth the price. It’s home to one of the quietest stretches of beach in the area and has an on-site restaurant, Island Beach Shop and Grill, plus a gift shop for sunscreen, sunglasses, or other beach items you might have forgotten to pack. The park also boasts camping, hiking, boating, fishing, and birding, so plan to spend your entire day exploring one of the area’s most beautiful locales. Head back to your hotel or B&B for a quick shower and change of clothes before heading to Panama Hatties for Happy Hour. The bar features handcrafted and frozen cocktails using only the freshest fruits and natural ingredients with wines and ice-cold draft and bottled beer selections that will keep you refreshed while enjoying the ocean breeze on the upstairs deck.

With waters brimming with dolphins, manatees, sea turtles, and various water birds, chances are good you’ll be able to spot one, two, or a few dozen. Next, head on over to Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park just north of downtown on Magnolia Avenue. The grounds claim fame as the area first explored by Juan Ponce de Leon in 1513 and settled by Pedro Menendez de Aviles

in 1565. Tucked in the shade of majestic oak trees, the café offers up locally sourced salads, sandwiches, burgers, and other tasty treats. Next, check into the park and make a toast from the Fountain of Youth, said to restore youth to those who drink from it. Make sure to visit with the park’s muster of nearly 30 Indian peafowl (commonly called peacocks) and visit with other wildlife on more than 15 acres of waterfront landscape. DAY 6 – ARTS & CULTURE A premier arts and culture destination, St. Augustine is home to dozens of art galleries, museums, and music venues. The St. Augustine Art Association on Marine Street has been promoting and supporting local artists since 1924. Stop in to peruse monthly, juried exhibits of works by emerging and professional artists. Admission is free and the Association is open Tuesday through Sunday. Art galleries abound in downtown. hen you hear the words distillery or bourbon, your mind will likely travel to the foothills of Kentucky, where 95 percent of the world’s bourbon is made, and it’s been that way since

the late 1700s. Fast-forward hundreds of years. A band of St. Augustine, Florida locals, with a passion for craft spirits and distilling, established what would become one of the most popular attractions in Northeast Florida. Their goal wasn’t just to create highly sought-after spirits. They wanted to form a space that would allow for distilling, while giving the world a glimpse into the intricate spirit-creating operation. St. Augustine Distillery would embody a desire for tradition with a modern, Florida twist.

St. Augustine Distillery was officially founded in 2014 and is housed within the historic, Florida Power & Light ice plant, the area’s first power and ice complex dating back to 1907. The building was purchased and restored, and is now a fully operational distillery more than a century after its original establishment. Since its inception, the St. Augustine Distillery has grown to employ more than 40 part, and full-time staff, including two fulltime bottlers and five full-time production specialists, who make the coveted spirits. It continues to challenge tradition as a one-ofa-kind facility, producing Florida’s first-ever bourbon, becoming the most popular distillery tour in the United States with a 5.0 rating on Trip Advisor, and inventing unique cocktails using their various styles of vodka, rum, gin, and – of course – bourbon. “We want to help people create delicious, easy-to-make cocktails with our home mixology program, ‘The Taste of St. Augustine,’” said Philip McDaniel, CEO and co-founder of St. Augustine Distillery. McDaniel strives to instill in people that craft cocktails aren’t just for ordering at an expensive bar. Using Distillery products, patrons are taught that they can easily re-create classic favorites or new concoctions at home.

Some of these creations can be sampled during the St. Augustine Distillery’s free tour. Patrons begin their tour in the museum, which highlights the history of the ice plant building and distilling in Florida. The tour culminates with a cocktail tasting, and the ever-knowledgeable tour guides masterfully create each blend on the spot. Small glasses filled to the brim are then passed out for everyone to taste and enjoy. The tour group is then invited into the gift shop where spirits, mixers, bar tools, recipe books, and chocolates are waiting to be perused. Eager shop attendants are also on standby to answer any and all questions. These unique tasting experiences weren’t always legal, nor were the sales of bottled spirits on premises. “A few things that have surprised me over the years is that we’ve been leading the change for legislation,” stated McDaniel. He, along with several

other members of the Florida Craft Distillers Guild, recognized the need for equal rights for distilleries. Their dedication and persistence ultimately lead to a monumental legislation change that allowed micro liquor distillers to sell and conduct tastings on site. “It’s been challenging, but rewarding.” While some of St. Augustine Distillery’s first sales included vodka and gin, due to the short time it takes to refine these liquors, a recent focus shift now puts bourbon in the limelight. Refining their bourbon recipe from ingredients used, to how long the blend ages, has been a tricky, but gratifying, mission. “The more time our spirits spend in the barrel, the better they get,” explains McDaniel. While bourbon, by law, only needs to age for two years, individual distillers may choose to keep it encased much longer. Bourbons gain their color and most of the flavor profile from the charred oak barrels, so

timing really is everything. The Distillery’s bourbon lineup now includes several unique creations. The first was the Double Cask, which is no longer available. Florida Straight, an 88-proof spirit that McDaniel considers to be the “new foundation of whiskey,” eventually replaced the Double Cask. The Port Finished Bourbon is created through collaboration with the San Sebastian Winery in which port wine barrels are utilized to create a malted bourbon with a smooth and semi-sweet finish. The Saint comes with a price tag of $200 and is the first-ever Old Fashioned-finished bourbon, and the four-year-aged Birthday Bourbon rounds out the list. Aside from the Double Cask, all bourbons can be found at the Distillery’s gift shop. Outside of creating some of the most sought-after spirits in the state, the St. Augustine Distillery also strives to be a good neighbor and an even better steward of the Ancient City. The establishment brought a new light to an otherwise dwindling part of town known as Lincolnville. This historic district was established by freed men and women following the Civil War, and now contains hundreds of historic buildings. With the Distillery’s large and popular presence, an interest in the Lincolnville area has increased, and trendy restaurants and businesses are taking advantage of the classic charm the area offers. The Distillery has also worked closely with Habitat for Humanity of St. Augustine, having donated thousands of dollars and hundreds of volunteer hours to build the area’s 138th home. The Sing Out Loud Festival, a multi-day music festival that occurs every September, also enjoys the Distillery as its presenting sponsor. Community involvement also includes several retail partnerships with vendors like Kookaburra, Hyppo, and three local chocolatiers. In recent years, the St. Augustine Distillery has become one of the most popular event venues in St. Augustine. From weddings to baby showers, the Distillery has created a trendy vibe that attracts celebrations from all over the country. Lot’s of folks claim to have a remedy, however —everything from a spoonful of pancake syrup, to an earplug in the left ear only, have been passed around as ways to combat it. The best advice is to take precautions beforehand if you think you are susceptible to motion sickness. Once it gets you, it’s got you. It’s too late at that point to avoid it, or to cure it, without going back to shore. There are many over the counter options, from Dramamine to the Transderm patch. Whatever option you choose, if this is an issue for you, do it in advance, often starting the evening before your trip. One of the oldest festivals in the state, the Florida Azalea Festival began in 1936 and started as Jaycees Days, a community fund raiser for the local club. The Azalea Festival is located along the banks of the beautiful St. Johns River and down St. Johns Avenue. March 7, 2020 SEARLE’S RAID OF ST. AUGUSTINE A reenactment of the “1668 Sack of St. Augustine”. During the day, a 17th century-style military encampment will be open to the public at the Fountain of Youth Park and will play host to drills, demonstrations and living history interpretation. The reenactment of the sacking and burning of the town will commence Saturday evening in the Old City, beginning at the Plaza and ending at the Old City Gates. April 5, 2020 BLESSING OF THE FLEET Blessing of the Fleet in St. Augustine is a historical ceremony dating back to the city’s earliest days of Spanish colonial occupation. This event takes place on Palm Sunday and invites all vessels, commercial and pleasure, to receive a blessing from the Bishop of the Diocese of St. Augustine. With roots from the Spanish Colonial days when seafaring vessels would be blessed so as to have a safe journey, the tradition continues in 2020. All watercraft from trawlers to yachts and more are welcome. Each vessel is encouraged to decorate with flags and bunting as well. The ceremony begins at noon on Sunday, April 5th, with a procession from the Cathedral Basilica along the Plaza de la Constitución to the St. Augustine Municipal Marina. Pat Croce’s Pirate Story

at Croce’s name is well known in the Ancient City. Most know him as the founder of the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum, as he famously moved his collection of pirate artifacts from Key West, to our city, in 2010. “When I was a little kid, I was obsessed with the movie Captain Blood starring Errol Flynn,” Croce reminisced. “I used to watch it with my dad...we must have seen it a hundred times. I was captivated.” When Errol

Flynn’s jacket from the movie came up for sale at an auction, Croce purchased it, and for years that jacket proudly rested on a coat stand in his office. The obsession with “all things pirate” continues to this day.

WHEN DID CROCE FIRST DISCOVER ST. AUGUSTINE? “In December of 2009 I came to give a talk, at a seminar regarding St. Augustine’s

450th anniversary,” Croce said. “I talked about pirates and I talked about history. Later, a member of the 450th Anniversary committee took me on a tour around town. That same day I ended up buying the property where the Pirate Museum is now located. Six to eight months later, I made the move from Key West. I had spent five years there, with the Pirate Soul Museum, but it wasn’t as relevant there as it is in the old city of St. Augustine.”

Croce’s favorite thing to do in St. Augustine? Peering out over the water, beyond the bayfront... the very same spot where pirates used to enter St. Augustine. “You truly had real, authentic pirates walking the streets of this town,” Croce explains. In addition to the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum, Pat Croce oversees the Colonial Quarter, a living history museum in the historic district of St. Augustine. While the University of Florida owns the property where the Colonial Quarter stands, Croce has put his own money into renovations of the site. Located at 33 St. George Street, the attraction sits behind the Pirate Museum. “We offer daily tours, unique retail shoppings, and we put on special events — it’s quite an attraction, and another asset to the city of St. Augustine,” Croce said. While teaching about 16th, 17th, and 18th century St. Augustine with hands-on exhibits, the site also includes three restaurants: the

Taberna de Caballo, the Bull & Crown Public House, and the newest offering, St. Augustine Seafood Company. One of the most popular outdoor music venues in downtown St. Augustine is the Colonial Oak Music Park, located on the grounds of the Colonial Quarter. This outdoor stage, nestled under giant live oak trees, plays host to concerts and other outdoor events. A wide variety of music is offered each weekend, free to the public. Two small buildings flanking the center stage offer beer, sangria, wine, craft cocktails and frozen drinks.

In 1996 he, along with Comcast, purchased the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team and re-launched them as a legitimate NBA championship contender. In addition, Croce is a New York Times best-selling author and a motivational speaker. Some of his books include Pirate Soul, Blackbeard, The Pirate Handbook and Plunder, co-authored by Adam Slutsky. He has been on the cover of Success Magazine and was chosen as Inc. Magazine’s “Entrepreneur of the Year.”

AMERICA UNEARTHED In 2014, the TV show, America Unearthed, came to St. Augustine to film an episode called “Captain Kidd’s Pirate Code.” Host Scott Wolter interviewed Croce about the museum’s rare Captain Kidd artifacts. “Most importantly, they wanted to see true, authentic artifacts. We have Kidd’s wooden treasure chest. That was the key,” Croce explained. The St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum has been featured on CNN, the Today Show, the History Channel, and Antiques Roadshow, among other national outlets. o visit to St. Augustine would be complete without a trip to the historic Lightner Museum. Located in the heart of downtown St. Augustine, the museum is housed in an iconic landmark building and is enjoyed by both tourists and locals alike. Home to one of the premier collections of fine and decorative 19th-century and early 20th-century art in the country. The five floors display furnishings, paintings, Victorian art glass, cut and blown glass, and natural history specimens. Other highlights include Oriental art, art nouveau works, and a Victorian Village portraying 19th-century life. The museum’s collections are displayed within the hotel’s entertainment center providing a unique art and architectural experience.

HISTORY The Lightner Museum is housed in the former Alcazar Hotel, built in 1888 by Henry Morrison Flagler (1830-1913). The Alcazar Hotel was originally built as an overflow for guests visiting the Ponce Hotel (now part of Flagler College) and was designed to appeal and entertain wealthy tourists who traveled south for the winter. In its prime, the hotel housed the world’s largest indoor swimming pool. Other offerings included a gymnasium, steam room, sulfur baths, massage parlor, and a ballroom. After years of catering to visitors, the Alcazar Hotel closed in 1931. In 1946, Chicago Publisher Otto C. Lightner purchased

the former Alcazar Hotel building to house his extensive collection of antiques and artwork. The Lightner Museum has been in operation since 1948. TOURS Take a tour Behind the Lightner as guests walk through the history of the Alcazar Hotel and view what life was like during the Gilded Age. Tickets for specialized guided tours such as our new, Behind the Lightner, group and curator’s tours are available with advance reservations. The museum also offers a self-guided tour included in general admission. SPECIAL EVENTS The Lightner Museum hosts a free

monthly social event, Lightner After Hours, on the last Thursday of each month. EXHIBITIONS The museum’s extensive private collection rotates throughout the galleries. When the The Cellar Upstairs first opened, it only had outdoor space and was only open seasonally, closed from November to January. About four years ago, indoor seating was added in case of inclement weather, and the venue was opened year-round, rain or shine. “The view ... the fact that it’s on the roof, and it’s a nice place to sit and relax,” Cox confirmed. Local wine, craft beer, and stunning views of the Oldest City make guests feel like VIP when visiting The Cellar Upstairs on the San Sebastian Winery’s rooftop.

“It opened in 2002, and was part of the addition — we tripled the size of the building from 6,000 to 18,000 square feet,” explained Charles Cox, President of the winery. “I had been to several rooftop bars in other cities and after living here for about six years or so, I thought it would be great for St. Augustine — guests can see out over the San Sebastian River and enjoy the outdoors.” Guests can choose from San Sebastian’s red and white wines, the Blanc De Fleur (a sweet bubbly), sangria, port or sherry, craft
