A PILSEN 01 An urban district and market destination proposal in Pilsen, Chicago reinvigorating the main Mexican Commercial District to promote the informal economy through market culture.

PROPOSED SITE PLAN

URBAN CONCEPT 18th Street was unsafe and offered little room for activity. The sidewalks were narrow, and few people used the bike paths due to direct contact with traffic. The streetscape has been redesigned to confront these issues and make the area more inviting for future commerce.

A market and central plaza is proposed adjacent to the CTA Pink Line and a new park/ plaza space is proposed at the intersection entrance to the neighborhood, capping the ends of the Mexican Commercial District. With a newly designed streetscape, vendors can also extend the market space on to the sidewalks through dining and street carts.

EL MERCADO PILSEN

El Mercado Pilsen is a three building market proposal next to the CTA Pink Line, replacing an old gas station and run-down one-story building which were eye sores to the neighborhood. It is adjacent to an existing Family Center with adjoining plaza space, allowing for a grand public atmosphere as you are dropped into the Market Square from the CTA Line.

Tilma Rosa is a proposed apartment complex by another classmate, finishing off the Market Square corner. Overall, it is an informal space with portable market stalls for the ability to move and reconfigure as needs of the space change. The historic St. Adalbert’s Catholic Church can also still be seen above the market from the 18th Street intersection.

URBAN CONCEPT Lower Price Hill is situated in a very problematic part of the city. It rests to the north of the Ohio River, west of Mill Creek, and east of a large incline. Because of it’s proximity to the water, the area is known for large floods. When planning at an urban scale it only makes sense to take the river into account.

Looking at floating city precedents and stacked typologies pushed towards allowing the water to extend into the neighborhood the way it wants to and building around and above it accordingly.

STUDY MODELS To experiment with how a stacked, bridging typology could work, studies were done with kinetic sand and blocks. These studies led to building canals off of the Mill Creek (east to west) and bridging long narrow buildings above (north to south). Once buildings had been placed, the interstitial space could then be used for public spaces and connection paths, all leading to the specific programmed zones spread throughout the area.

BUILDING CONCEPT The site is split into three different sections used for various reasons: learning, gathering, experiencing.

Key sitelines have been employed to connect spaces throughout the building. Five garden spaces utilize the interstitial space in between programs to allow for exterior space blended throughout the site.

From an exploration of masonry and studying existing buildings in OTR, the entry is anchored at the corner through the use of a rigid brick volume and is broken up on either side with masonry units, terra cotta, and glass.

Through the progression of this design, building details were strongly taken into account. Visual columns were minimized by thickening the walls and hiding them inside while load bearing walls were utilized in instances where that could not happen. Multiple lighting techniques are used to create an ambiance in the lobby and museum levels, and brick is also utilized on the interior of the building creating some interesting connections with beams and soffits.

BUILDING CONCEPT

ENTRY

Staircases seen throughout Romania were studied and used to carefully compose a circulatory sequence that is reminiscent of the many medieval city forts throughout the country. These staircases directly represented throughout my final design and allows every terrace/platform to have its own space disconnected from the rest of the building. The overall concept was to create a stepped mini city situated around a central courtyard space where each level holds a new experience as you walk through.

BUILDING CONCEPT The community spaces around the commercial center are going unused and seem run-down. This project dealt with a restoration idea to attract people back to the village. I have suggested a large-scale apartment complex above the existing commercial building which would allow people to move closer to this community space without having to walk or drive. The shape of this new building would create a recreational plaza space at the rear of the commercial center for social, gathering events to take place.

BUILDING CONCEPT This property includes two separate buildings connected in the middle and back by small corridors. The first floor is commercial space with an existing commercial kitchen in the back and two separate units are located above, one in each building. This building has been owned by many tenants in the past for a multitude of program spaces. The concept of this design was to redevelop it into a cafe atmosphere with an expanded connection between the two buildings to cross between the two spaces easier. The outdoor patio was extended to incorporate more levels of seating for a greater outdoor experience and both units above were renovated to ensure that each residential space incorporated a kitchen and usable circulation.

CHICAGO MAPPING STUDY This model is an illustration of various overlaid topographical, socioeconomical, and demographic information. Overall, this exercise gave a better understanding of the city of Chicago and the identities of the Latino/Mexican communities throughout the area which helped lead to the urban design and market proposal for Bienvenidos a pilsen.
