FY24 Annual Report

Page 1

Dear Friends,

For more than 170 years, Children’s Aid has been a steadfast presence in the lives of New York City’s children, ensuring every young person we meet has the tools to thrive—no matter the challenges they face. This year’s annual report, All Ways, reflects our deep and unwavering commitment to providing comprehensive, wholeperson support for children, youth, and families.

In times of uncertainty, our mission remains clear: to be there in all ways, always. We don’t just address one aspect of a child’s life—we work holistically, offering education, health care, social-emotional support, and college and career guidance at every stage of their journey.

OUR MISSION

Children’s Aid helps children living in poverty to succeed and thrive. We do this by providing comprehensive supports to children, youth, and their families in targeted high-needs New York City neighborhoods.

With your support, we continue to meet young people where they are, breaking down barriers, and creating pathways to success.

Through these pages, you’ll see the breadth and depth of our impact: how we show up for children and families with reliability, innovation, and care. You’ll read stories of resilience, see the measurable outcomes of our work, and witness the power of a community united in purpose.

Thank you for standing with us. Together, we are building a future where every child can reach their full potential—in all ways.

OUR VISION

All children have access to the opportunities and supports they need to realize their fullest potential and lead successful, healthy, and productive lives.

Serving children, youth, and families in all ways, always.

Children’s Aid was founded in 1853, a time when New York City offered few, if any, social services for children. As our city and nation have evolved, so have the needs of the communities we serve. What has remained constant is Children’s Aid’s unwavering presence in the lives of young people—walking alongside them at every stage of their development.

Today, Children’s Aid supports nearly 50,000 children, youth, and families across the city at 42 program sites concentrated primarily in Harlem, Washington Heights, the South Bronx, and northern Staten Island. Our portfolio of programs and services are designed to meet the ever-changing needs of our communities. When you support Children’s Aid, you become part of a legacy dedicated to building brighter futures for generations of New Yorkers. Your generosity sustains us through times of change and challenge, allowing us to be a trusted source of stability and opportunity for children, youth, and families in all ways, always.

FAMILY

99 percent of families enrolled in our crisis interventions avoid foster care placements and forge a path toward maintaining strong, safe, and healthy homes.

EDUCATION

HEALTH

97 percent of 2024 four-year graduates in our targeted programs who applied were accepted to college, as compared to 83% of NYC students city-wide.

100 percent of high schoolers who obtain internal referrals for behavioral health services successfully receive treatment, enabling them to take the first steps toward achieving their goals.

360° SUPPORT

Holistic care to meet complex needs.

The challenges our children, youth, and families face are deeply interconnected—no single intervention is enough. A child who is hungry cannot focus on learning to read. A teenager navigating mental health challenges will struggle to plan for college or career. A family cannot thrive without a stable home environment. Real, lasting change requires meeting people where they are and addressing their full spectrum of needs.

When families enter the doors of Children’s Aid, they gain a partner committed to their success. Our staff works side by side with each family to develop a tailored plan that meets immediate needs and builds long-term stability—whether that means enrolling a child in school, accessing healthcare, or connecting to job training or financial support.

Children’s Aid provides individualized, comprehensive, attuned support for nearly 50,000 children, youth, and families at 42 program sites across NYC.

Preston Sharp

Children’s Aid Staff

Hope Leadership Academy, Program Director

“My son has grown in so many ways thanks to the staff and environment at Children’s Aid. This is the happiest I have ever seen him.”

Jesus was 11 when he entered Hope Leadership Academy in Harlem, one of our adolescent community centers. He struggled to control his emotions and responded with combative behavior. Jesus was met with warmth and understanding by our team. After a few weeks, with support in identifying and communicating his feelings in healthier ways, he began making significant progress.

Jesus’ mother credits Program

Director Preston Sharp as the key to that transformation. Preston

immediately developed a close bond with Jesus by communicating openly, listening without judgment, and offering steady guidance. He reached Jesus in ways others could not.

Jesus and Preston still check in weekly to share “some positive words.” Jesus knows he can always stop by for support or a sympathetic ear. His outlook shifted, his grades improved thanks to academic support, and he is excited to continue growing through Hope’s programs.

— Maria, Jesus’ mother

SEAMLESS ACCESS

Direct connection to critical services.

Children and families in underresourced communities often face fragmented support systems, limiting access to essential education, health, and family services. Without coordinated care, our young people encounter barriers that limit their potential and long-term success.

At Children’s Aid, integration is a core priority—we aim to provide a targeted, coordinated experience for every child, youth, and family we serve. No matter how a family enters our community, our staff

quickly assess their needs and connect them with the appropriate services. Many families are unaware of the full range of programs available or how to access these resources. Working multiple jobs or nontraditional hours can also create scheduling issues for parents to get help for themselves or their children. It is our role to break down these barriers to entry and simplify the process, ensuring each family receives the resources they need to thrive.

Regardless of how they enter the doors of Children’s Aid, every family we serve has integrated access to all of our programs and resources.

Each family’s journey is different and below is just one example of how we can help with our portfolio of services and community connections.

CHILDREN’S AID SERVICE MAPPING IN ACTION

Initial Contact

Having received a trusted recommendation from a neighbor with young children, a mother enrolls her two children, 2 and 3 years old, at Children’s Aid College Prep Charter School (CACPCS). She is a single parent who works as a home health aide. The family lives in the West Farms neighborhood in the Bronx, within walking distance of CACPCS.

Deep Assessment

A “Needs Assessment” meeting is set up to understand the best ways to assist this new family. During this meeting our social worker learns that neither child has had a dental exam. The mother also confides that despite working full-time, she is struggling to keep up with the family’s monthly expenses due to a recent rent increase.

Seamless Access Highlights

100% of children enrolled in our Early Childhood programming also received vision screenings 440 workshops and community events for youth and families enrolled in Children’s Aid services

A Comprehensive Plan Ongoing Support

Our social worker schedules appointments for annual physicals and dental screenings for both children at our Bronx Health Center. Additionally, they arrange for the mother to receive gift cards to help her afford household items on a monthly basis and diapers are given for the younger child who is currently potty training.

As the children learn and grow at CACPCS, our staff will continue to meet with the family on a regular basis to understand and assist with their evolving needs as well as make themselves accessible in case of emergent events. The family will always have access to all of Children’s Aid’s services, such as behavioral health support, job training, food pantries, and more.

“Children’s Aid means creating an environment where little ones can learn and explore safely and joyfully. It’s beautiful to see her develop.”

Brenda and her two daughters, Juliette and Charlotte, started their journey with Children’s Aid at our Richmond Early Learning Center in Staten Island. The experience sparked a love of learning for the sisters and prepared them for success in kindergarten and beyond. At the center, the girls also received dental check-ups and speech therapy—services coordinated around Brenda’s schedule to make access easy and convenient.

Brenda also worked with the Children’s Aid team to apply for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and secure a new home for her family. Seeking a way to become more involved in Juliette and Charlotte’s education, she joined the center’s parent association and actively participates in school events. Brenda credits the Richmond staff for the encouragement and support that have helped her family grow stronger every step of the way.

LONG-TERM ENGAGEMENT

A continuum of care, every step of the way.

At Children’s Aid, our commitment to children, youth, and families does not end at a single milestone. Our support evolves as they move through different stages of life and face new challenges. No matter what the future holds, our families know they can count on Children’s Aid to stand beside them—helping them overcome obstacles and build a brighter future.

We believe that lasting impact comes from sustained engagement. That is why Children’s Aid offers a continuum of services designed to grow with each child and family. By fostering strong, trusting relationships and staying involved for the long haul, we empower those we serve to thrive not just today, but for a lifetime.

Children’s Aid Alumnus
“Everyone says it takes a village to raise a child. That village is Children’s Aid, and for that, I’m forever grateful.”

Cordale came to Children’s Aid at 14, when he entered foster care and met his social worker, Maxine. He remembers the compassion and unwavering support he felt visiting her office. That feeling has been consistent for Cordale throughout his life.

During his time with Children’s Aid, Cordale visited our Next Generation Center (NGC), a South Bronx community center. There he enrolled in technology class and met Karon, his mentor. Karon recognized Cordale’s interests and introduced him to the newly

opened sound studio. This unlocked a passion in Cordale, changing the trajectory of his life.

Today, Cordale is thriving. He works full-time in an operations role and continues to pursue his passion for music and digital art. As a Children’s Aid alumnus, he stays connected by sharing his story, serving as the house DJ at program events, and giving back wherever he can. Two decades after walking through our doors, Cordale knows if he ever needs support, Children’s Aid is still just a phone call away.

Maria Reyes

Children’s

Maria grew up attending the Dunlevy Milbank Community Center in Harlem. It’s where she learned to swim, came to when she needed her first stitches, and built countless memories to last a lifetime. Today, she walks those same halls, not as a participant, but as the Insurance Specialist in the health clinic helping families access the care and support they need.

Maria’s title only tells part of the story. She is known for going above and beyond—whether helping a mother enroll her three children in the Summer Youth Employment Program, connecting families with food pantries, or finding clothing for a family displaced by a house fire. While her support starts with a single need, it extends far beyond. Families know they can come back to Maria for help, guidance, or just a familiar face. The steady stream of holiday cards and photos she receives every year is a testament to the lasting impact she has made.

“Children’s Aid gave me so much as a child. It feels good to wake up every day and now do the same for other families.”

Long-Term Engagement

Highlights 3,061 youth received job training and internship experiences to prepare them for success in their careers.

241 children in foster care were placed in stable, permanent homes through adoption, kinship guardianship, or reunification with parents.

Children’s Aid is committed to being a trusted partner and advocate for New Yorkers.

For over 160 years Children’s Aid has evolved alongside New York City, but our passion for serving has never wavered. Our promise remains: provide tailored, transformative support and meaningful advocacy at the city, state, and federal levels. Whatever challenges arise, we will continue to stand with the communities we serve.

Jeanette Frazier

Children’s Aid Staff

Central Park East II, Community School Director

“It is amazing to see what a dedicated group of people can do for an entire community.”

Jeanette is the Community School Director at one of 20 community schools where Children’s Aid partners with New York City public schools to deliver comprehensive services for students and their families. For nearly 30 years, Jeanette has been with Children’s Aid, witnessing firsthand the city’s transformation and the shifting needs of its communities. Most recently, as New York experienced an influx of newcomer families, Jeanette and her team adapted quickly to make the transition as seamless as possible. They warmly welcomed the students and connected families to critical resources while also advocating on their behalf with city agencies.

PROGRAM SITES

Brooklyn, Harlem, northern Staten Island, the South Bronx, and Washington Heights are among the areas in New York City that are hardest hit by poverty and its attendant challenges. We concentrate our services in these neighborhoods where they are needed most and work hard to become trusted members of the communities we serve.

FY 2024 FINANCIAL REPORT

Every dollar entrusted to Children’s Aid is used with care and purpose to create life-changing opportunities for the nearly 50,000 children, youth, and families we serve.

On the following page are our financial highlights for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024. With operating revenue of $171.8 million and expenses of $180.2 million, the year ended with an $8.4 million operating deficit. While in an economically challenging environment for vulnerable New Yorkers, especially children, our clients’ well-being continues to be our highest priority; in the case of our fiscal year 2024, we used our net assets built up over many decades in order to bolster the welfare of the children we serve. This is why we need your assistance in continuing the incredible mission of Children’s Aid in a sustainable and responsible manner, where program expenses accounted for 83% of our operating expenses and only 17% being used to cover overhead expenses.

Chris and Sarah Snow Children’s Aid Supporters

Chris and Sarah Snow have been generous supporters of Children’s Aid for the past 18 years. As a Public Policy major in college, Chris studied the foster care system and engaged directly with youth in care—an experience that opened his eyes to the critical need for resources that help young people pursue their goals. Chris and Sarah deeply believe that “as a society, we should be giving kids opportunities,” especially when the odds are stacked against them. In addition to their loyal philanthropic support, the Snows have attended our annual Benefit, volunteered at educational events, celebrated with families at early childhood graduation ceremonies, and secured matching gifts through Chris’ employer. We are grateful for their enduring commitment to helping kids thrive.

Children’s Aid Supporters

“Care” is one of Bel Brands’ core values— and their support of Children’s Aid exemplifies that commitment. Bel Brands has generously sponsored both our annual Benefit and the Iron Go!Chefs cooking competition for children. The Bel Brands team also showed up to the competition: volunteering as judges, managing logistics, and donating Bel products for families to take home. Most recently, Bel hosted a workforce development workshop for our high school students. We are proud to partner with Bel Brands in building brighter futures for New York City children and youth.
