WHY ARE STAKES USED [AROUND A NEWLYPLANTED TREE] IF THERE ISN’T ANYTHING TO CONNECT THEM TO THE TREE?

A

-Andrea, W D.C.

Being an urban tree is hard. Stakes driven into the ground surrounding a newly-planted tree are there to protect the tree’s nutrient delivery system from car doors, mowers and anything else that could damage its trunk.

kathleen davis Sustaining member What initially persuaded you to give to Casey Trees as a Sustainer? I am passionate about the mission of Casey Trees and being able to be a part of the long term growth of D.C.

What made you apply for RiverSmart Homes? I recently bought a home in D.C. and wanted to do my part in expanding the tree canopy. Attending various Casey Tree events, I had known that Casey Trees had a variety of programs to help with this process. The RiverSmart Homes program was the best for for my needs.

What good do you think Casey Trees does for your community? The great thing about Casey Trees: not only does it impact the community long-term by providing growth and protection of our tree canopy, but it also allows community members to get engaged with each other in plantings and in advocacy. As we invest in planting and caring for our landscape, we are investing in our community that we want to see grow and bringing the people who are caring for it closer together.

No tree says “holiday season like the American holly. Abundant at the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials, throughout Rock Creek Park, on the Capitol Grounds and all across the city, this evergreen with bright red berry-like drupes is a showstopper this time of year. Look to the map to find American holly trees near you!

Casey Trees has planted over 600 American holly trees across

the District since 2002.
