Philosophy and Vision I believe that educationally-based athletics is an extension of the classroom in which studentathletes learn lessons and life skills not replicated in other environments. I value integrity, aspiration, and a strong desire to help others grow physically, mentally, and emotionally. As an athletic administrator, I look for these qualities in all of the individuals I collaborate with and those I hire. The presence of these characteristics helps to ensure the student-athletes in our program have the best possible experience.

High school athletics are an ever-changing landscape in which one must stay current and be adaptable to succeed. These are qualities I bring to my work every day. It is something I am passionate about, which has led me to reach others with the message and skills necessary to thrive as an athletic administrator.

I am not a “win at all costs� leader. While I value winning, I place a higher value on preparing to compete and playing to potential. I want everyone in our programs to meet or exceed their potential, student-athletes and coaches alike. My core values and expectations center on teaching, growth, process, and effort, not outcomes. When all stakeholders take the time to prepare, we have the confidence to perform and accomplish our goals.

How I will support the development, evaluation, and recruitment of coaches‌ I firmly believe that the best coaches are teachers of their sport, and just as teachers develop, so do great coaches. I will support coaches in a growth model process so they may hone their skills in the sport of their expertise. I will also ask them to draw upon their experiences as a teacher...how have they helped their students achieve in the classroom and how can that transfer to their coaching style. I will encourage coaches to become members of their professional organizations and to attend and present at clinics. I want our athletic department to be one that others look to emulate and use as a benchmark of quality and success. This will ensure that our coaches are keeping up with best practices within their sport.

To further the development of coaches, I would look to create a coaches council that would be coach driven and meet regularly. All levels of the coaching staff would be welcome to attend and contribute to the progress and communication of the athletic department. My vision is to have this group lead by the coaches, pertaining to topics that interest them. I do not like the concept of having meetings to simply meet. I want these collaborations to be meaningful for the coaches and lead to outcomes that have a positive impact for the athletic department and studentathletes.

Along the same lines, I would also look to create a first-year coach program. I believe that there are too many young coaches that become discouraged in their first year due to their teaching load and their coaching responsibilities. This program will provide training and resources on how to be successful with the administrative, clerical, and coaching duties that they would be required to fulfill. I feel that if this type of training is provided, it will help retain our best coaches as well as encourage those who are not quite sure about taking on the tasks of coaching.

Evaluating coaches can be a difficult and daunting task due to the many variables at hand. Wins vs. losses, development of athletes, athlete retention, success in the postseason, and offseason programs are just a few categories that come to mind for an evaluation; these are also objectives that have measurable outcomes. What are difficult to measure are the intangibles, i.e. are the students having a positive experience and quite simply, are they having fun. What I would create, with the assistance of the coaches, is an instrument that assesses both objective and subjective categories; a tool that assesses a balance of the tangible and intangibles. This type of evaluative tool will allow the coach and athletic director to reflect on the progress and success of a program and evaluate the areas of improvement and need. I firmly believe that the evaluative process should be used to help coaches reflect on the achievements and growth of a season as well as provide constructive feedback for improvement.

My leadership style‌ My leadership style would best be described as servant leadership. My actions and decisions will impact the greater good of the school district, while at the same time, produce new leaders. I am a leader that listens to understand rather than someone who listens to react. I will assure all stakeholders that they will be heard with an empathetical and ethical ear. In return, those who speak will be provided with meaningful feedback which will help them grow and achieve their goals. By doing this, I will create trust between all contributors involved and shared decision making can take place.

I am extremely fortunate to be a second-generation athletic director. My leadership style has been influenced by father and many other outstanding athletic directors, administrators, teachers, coaches, and trailblazers that have mentored me through the years. The strongest quality in all of these people is their leadership by example. I hold steadfast that this is the strongest characteristic of any leader. I will display a work ethic that is second to none that serves the students, staff, and community. I will be the first to roll up his sleeves when extra assistance is needed to accomplish all tasks. I will be a trusted, assertive, and positive leader that is visible, builds community, fosters new leaders, and has the foresight for success; one who truly models a growth mindset. To come full circle, I am the leader I am today, due to the fact that I had great leaders ahead of me modeling the correct way to conduct business. I will continue to carry that torch and pass along its attributes to my teammates.

Finally, my leadership style is one that emphasizes growth and process over wins and losses. I want our coaches and athletes to understand that athletics are an extension of the classroom and that every coach and student-athlete has the opportunity and ability to learn and grow, just as they do in the classroom. When these ideals are accepted and carried out, goals can be achieved and success can be measured.

How race, culture, and diversity has shaped me‌ Race, culture, and diversity have had a deep impact on my career in education. During the first phase of my career, as a classroom teacher, I worked diligently to establish a culture that was inclusive for all students. I encouraged students to celebrate their diverse backgrounds and immerse those values into their course work as an English student. What I found from this encouragement was that my students gained a better understanding of who they were, how others came to be who they are, and a mutual understanding and respect for all students of the school community.

Race, culture, and diversity have also had a deep impact on my practice as a coach, sponsor, and currently as the Assistant Director of Activities and Athletics. While achievement and improvement are at the forefront of athletics and activities, coaches and sponsors (and leadership) need to take many factors into consideration, and, at times, differentiate for the diversity of student athletes. I encourage my coaches and sponsors to consider the many variables that are not peripheral. Religion, family commitments, employment necessities, heritage, and educational priorities are potential, determining factors of race, culture, and diversity as to why a student may or may not be able to participate in co-curricular activities.

Therefore, rather than be punitive or disrespectful of these students, I encourage coaches and sponsors to be flexible and find a way to include all students within their programs, just as I did when I was in their role.

It is important to celebrate, include, and be adaptive to culture and diversity in the field of education. By adopting these principles, I have found myself to be open-minded and empathetic of my students, co-curricular students, and co-workers. This has led me to be a well-rounded person and professional that strives to learn more about all stakeholders and appreciative of their backgrounds.

The importance of technology in the education…

More than ever, technology plays a vital role in the educational setting. The current pandemic has compelled educators, administrators, students, coaches, and athletes to adjust their approaches to how teaching, learning, training, and coaching are accomplished. Zoom and Google Hangouts have become the classroom; Schoology, Skyward, Moodle, and Google Classroom have replaced backpacks and binders; and livestreaming and social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Twitch, Instagram, and YouTube have allowed educators and coaches to keep the community informed and engaged about/with school news and events. As educators, we have had many different forms of technology at our finger tips for some time now. Yet, it is now that we are finding ways to utilize and maximize the technologies that we have on hand to see that our students and staff are achieving academic, social-emotional, and co-curricular goals.

Most recently, technology has played an integral role in the realm of high school athletics.

Technology has allowed our coaches the ability to conduct practices, games, and competitions virtually. Further, the athletic department has found ways to live stream events through a variety of different platforms. HUDL and Pixellot cameras have enhanced how we can still showcase our athletes to families, the community, and college recruiters. While the goal is to have stadiums and gymnasiums full of fans, these types of technologies allow us an alternative during these prodigious times.

Technology definitely streamlines the day to day tasks that I must complete. Software programs such as 8to18 and rSchool allow for easy completion of scheduling games, practices, and transportation. These programs also streamline the process for our coaches to update their records, scores, and rosters. Still, I would like to see technology taken to the next level and showcase all of the students involved with athletics and activities. One way to do this is by live streaming and showcasing our lower level and underrecognized sports and activities. The “B” level game or the debate competition is equally important as the varsity football game or the musical. An additional way to highlight the lower levels would be though a weekly, electronic newsletter that contains a “Down on the Farm” report. This newsletter would include highlights, scores, stories, and updates from the past week’s competitions; showcasing the lower levels of competition. By doing this, we will provide equity for all of our athletes, performers, and competitors.

While I consider myself highly proficient with technology, it is also important to remember that technology is constantly changing. It is important for users to stay current with the everchanging landscape of hardware and software. I stay up to date by viewing webinars, reading about the latest technology trends, and working with the technology department. By doing this, I can assure our stakeholders that they are receiving the best possible production(s) of high school athletics. _____________________________________________________________________________________

Mr. Casey Duval It is with great pleasure that I write a letter of recommendation for Mr. Casey Duval. I have the extreme pleasure to work with and observe Casey as the assistant athletic director and assistant activities director, as the athletic director at Grant Community High School. Casey is uncompromising in his quest for excellence for all our student athletes in the classroom and on the field. He has shown himself to be a very well organized, flexible, and a very caring person who is willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. His caring attitude, flexibility, and strong communication skills makes the athletic/activities department a true community for his students, athletes and their parents. He has developed a very positive working relationship with all the coaches, sponsors, athletic booster club, custodial staff and organizations and clubs within the school and the community. I believe these attributes make Casey an outstanding candidate for the athletic director position at your school.

Mr. Duval has vast knowledge of skills and technique and uses best practices to bring out the best in all his students and athletes. He is always willing to listen to ideas from our students. As a result of these meeting, he started the Student Athlete Activity Leaders Team that allowed students to have a voice in the extracurricular setting. He himself is a lifelong learner who is currently enrolled in post graduate work in athletic administration. He attends workshops and clinics to keep up to date with teaching and training techniques. He is a team player who participates in the shared decision-making process but is also aware of when a decision must be made by himself. Casey is a true leader.

October 28, 2020 Dear Sir or Madam, It is an honor and a privilege to write this letter of recommendation on behalf of Mr. Casey Duval. I have known Casey for over fifteen years, most recently as our current Assistant Director for Activities and Athletics. As the current Activities Director, Casey works with me and our Athletic Director to coordinate calendars, facility usage, transportation, and programming for over 60 school-sponsored clubs and athletic teams. Since his first year of service in 2017-2018, Casey has overseen rapid expansion of our co-curricular offerings. We now have ten new co-curricular activities since Casey took the helm as Student Activities Director.

As a veteran teacher in our district, Casey’s transition to his new role was smooth. He had a good rapport with staff members and a local knowledge of how our systems operate. From that standpoint, much of my mentoring came in the form of policies and procedures. A quick study, Casey has become more autonomous, leading most of the day-to-day operations in the Activities realm. Most of my support lies in helping him navigate difficult student or logistical issues.

Casey has demonstrated confidence and competence in leading quarterly pep rallies with our entire student body and staff. He is organized, communicative, detail-oriented, and reliable in ensuring that all events run smoothly. He believes that investing time and energy into planning an activity leads to lower stress and success at the actual event.

Capitalizing on his organization and communication skills, Casey has hosted seven conference events on our campus over the past four years. He plays a crucial role in our conference, including orchestrating an annual leadership summit and serving as the Resource Activity Director for competitive chess and bass fishing teams. Locally, he co-created and co-sponsors the Grant chapter of the Student Athletic and Activities Leadership Team (SAALT), which seeks to organize Student Activities leaders to apply concepts learned at the annual conference to drive positive change at GCHS. I’m proud of his efforts on this front.

Seeking to grow professionally, Casey has continued to pursue advanced coursework. He recently completed his Certified Athletic Administrator certification, a reflection of his dedication to honing his skills and continuing to evolve as a school leader.

Casey’s problem-solving skills have been essential to handling many sensitive and difficult situations. No matter the task, Casey is always willing to put in the time and effort to make sure the job is done correctly. He has continually given and sacrificed more every year. As the Assistant Principal of Student Services, I see Casey as the ideal employee. He never complains, does what is asked of him, and works continuously to improve his craft. Casey also possesses people skills that allow him to be very well-liked by his colleagues and administration. Casey is someone I trust will keep me informed and up to date on any concerns he has with staff or students.

If Casey were to be hired by another district, it would be a great loss for Grant Community High School.

To whom it may concern, I have had the opportunity to work with Casey Duval in a variety of environments and roles. I was the Athletic Director at Lakes Community High School for eleven years and am now in my fifth year as the Athletic Director at Mundelein High School. In the time I have known Casey he has been a coach at Mundelein, has been a teacher and coach at Grant and is currently the Assistant Athletic Director at Grant High School. I have been able to work with Casey many times. We co-hosted the Lake County Boys Volleyball tournament at Grant and Lakes High School for a number of years. The effort that Casey puts into his daily duties as an athletic administrator is unmatched. Few people I know exhibit the qualities Casey demonstrates on a daily basis. Casey is always constantly trying to improve his programs. Casey is a great person and it is not unusual to see him working very hard to ensure that everyone is doing the right thing when dealing with the athletic issues in the school district. As the Athletic Director at MHS and having worked with Casey often, I have been able to witness his professional maturation unlike any of his colleagues. He is one of a kind and can be in charge of anyone and can do anything and do it with high quality.

Casey is a first class person and has a lot to offer. In addition to being an effective leader he was an outstanding baseball coach, Casey is always visible and able to work at many school functions and athletic events. I watched him last year do an outstanding job as Mundelein and Grant co-hosted a Thanksgiving Varsity Boys Basketball Tournament at both of our schools.

Casey was an asset to both schools as he was in charge of working on material that needed to get finished for our tournament to run smoothly. Casey has shown his ability to work with many people in a variety of roles in the time I have known him.

Casey now is a successful Assistant Athletic Director and I enjoy working with him as a fellow Athletic Administrator. I am proud to have watched him grow in the many roles he has taken on. Casey is well respected in the Athletic Director circles and is someone that will be successful at Glenbrook South High School as the next Athletic Director. His responsibilities in this position include: the scheduling and score reporting for Boys and Girls golf for the conference, supervising athletic and activity events, the oversight of all activity programs, assisting in the evaluation and supervision of staff, managing and supervising events hosted by Grant High School, and a liaison of the Northern Lake County Conference. Working with Casey, I found him to be professional and knowledgeable. He enjoys communicating with students, parents and staff and uses his knowledge of IHSA and NFHS rules to help manage student activities. He is proficient in areas of technology and is integral in supporting Grant’s athletic/activity program/facility scheduling program, rSchool. In addition to his other responsibilities, he regularly collaborates with other administrators in reviewing and making changes to policies and procedures.

Casey willingly accepts responsibility and assumes a leadership role as necessary. He understands the importance of being visible during the school day and available to students and staff. He puts in the necessary time to benefit both students and staff.

Epilogue Dear Selection Committee, Thank you for taking the time to meet with me today. It will be an honor to don the navy and gold; to be a Titan. I will work relentlessly to make Glenbrook South Athletics the class of the Central Suburban Conference and the state of Illinois. Further, our student-athletes will not only train to compete on the playing field. They will also train to be high achieving students, outstanding community members, and leaders of tomorrow. It is an aspiration of mine that every Titan leaves Glenbrook South with positive experiences.
