• NEW FROM CASEMATE • Allied Armor in Normandy Yves Buffetaut This volume of the Casemate Illustrated series explores the Normandy invasion from the perspective of the Allied Armored divisions, looking at how armored vehicles played a central role in the many battles that took place. It includes over 40 profiles of tanks and armored vehicles. With detailed diagrams and many photos illustrating the composition of the Allied armored divisions and tank regiments present at Normandy, this volume explains the crucial part played by tanks in gaining a foothold in Normandy after the D-Day landings. 9781612006079, $24.95, $16.50, paperback, 128p.

From Moscow to Stalingrad The Eastern Front, 1941-1942 Yves Buffetaut The path from Moscow to Stalingrad was littered with successes and losses for both the Red Army and the Wehrmacht, with tensions remaining high and culminating in one of the harshest battles of the Second World War. This volume outlines how it was that, less than a year after their defeat at Moscow, the German army had found a way to make the Soviet troops waver in their defense, with their persistence eventually leading to the Battle of Stalingrad. 9781612006093, $24.95, $16.50, paperback, 128p.

Tanks in Hell A Marine Corps Tank Company on Tarawa Romain Cansiere and Oscar E. Gilbert In this unique study Oscar Gilbert and Romain Cansiere use official documents, memoirs, interviews with veterans, as well as personal and aerial photographs to follow Charlie Company from its formation, and trace the movement, action—and loss—of individual tanks in this horrific four-day struggle. It is a story of escapes from drowning tanks, and even more harrowing escapes from tanks knocked out behind Japanese lines. It is the story of how the two surviving tanks and their crews expanded a perilously thin beachhead, and cleared the way for critical reinforcements to come ashore. But most of all it is a story of how a few unsung Marines helped turn near disaster into epic victory. 9781612006512, $19.95, $12.99, paperback, 264p.

Treat ‘Em Rough The Birth of American Armor 1917–20 Dale E.Wilson Tanks caused havoc among the Germans when they first appeared on the battlefields of Europe in 1917. These metal monsters broke up the trench warfare stalemate and thus hastened the armistice. This is the first full study of the U.S. Army’s World War I Tank Corps. Because of production delays and political maneuvering, no American tanks made it into the war, and American tankers had to use French machines instead. But a new breed of army officers, of which Eisenhower and Patton are the most famous, saw the promise of this new technology and staked their careers on it. Ike trained the first generation of tankers at Camp Colt at Gettysburg, and Patton led them into battle in France. The author brings these early days of the Tank Corps to life. Using eyewitness accounts from the archives at the Army War College and elsewhere, he details the design and building of the first tanks, the training of crews, the monstrous problem of transport in an age when roads were built for horse-drawn carriages, the evolution of armored combat doctrine, and the three great battles in which tanks revolutionized modern warfare: St Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, and St. Quentin. 9781612006673, $32.95, $21.50, hardback, 232p.

• NEW FROM CASEMATE • How Carriers Fought Carrier Operations in WWII Lars Celander In November 1921 the first purpose-built aircraft carrier was launched by the Japanese, followed a year later by the launch of the British Hermes. The conversion of battlecruisers into aircraft carriers after World War I required the consideration of issues including handling aircraft on the flight deck and the techniques of attacking enemy ships, and the evolution of carrier operations was ongoing when World War II broke out. With a focus on the conflict in the Pacific between the U.S. Navy and the imperial Japanese fleet, this title examines how aircraft carriers fought during World War II by first considering all the tools and building blocks of carrier operations, and then discussing the various battles that involved aircraft carriers to explore how carrier operations evolved during war. The book concludes with a discussion of how carrier operations changed during the course of the war, as better technology and a better understanding of this new type of warfare allowed for quick advances in how operations were carried out. 9781612006215, $34.95, $22.99, hardback, 296p.

Blood Money Stories of an ex-Recce’s Missions in Iraq Johan Raath Johan Raath and a security team were ambushed in May 2004 while on a mission to reconnoitre a power plant south of Baghdad for an American firm. He had been in the country for only two weeks. This was a taste of what was to come over the next few years as he worked as a private military contractor (PMC) in Iraq. His mission? Not to wage war but to protect lives. Raath and his team provided security for engineers working on reconstruction projects in Iraq. Whether in the notorious Triangle of Death, in the deadly area around Ramadi or in the faction-ridden Basra, Raath had numerous hair-raising experiences. Key to his survival was his training as a Special Forces operator, or Recce. This riveting account offers a rare glimpse into the world of private military contractors and the realities of everyday life in one of the world’s most violent conflict zones. 9781612006611, $32.95, $21.50, hardback, 344p.

The Last Siege The Mobile Campaign, Alabama 1865 Paul Brueske The Last Siege explores the events surrounding this siege and capture of Mobile, Alabama. The Union victory at the battle of Mobile Bay in 1864 ended blockade running from the port of Mobile. This book gives a new perspective on the strategic importance of Mobile as a logistical center which had access to vital rail lines and two major river systems, essential in moving forces and supplies. Included are the most detailed accounts ever written on Union and Confederate camp life in the weeks prior to the invasion, cavalry operations of both sides during tthe expedition, the Federal feint movement at Cedar Point, the crippling effect of torpedoes on U.S. naval operations in Mobile Bay, the tread-way escape from Spanish Fort, and the evacuation of Mobile. Using a variety of primary sources, this book highlights the bravery of the men who were still trying to win by utilizing evolved military tactics against the strong defensive fortifications at Mobile. Many acts of heroism occurred in this, the Confederacy’s last campaign which ended in the final surrender at Citronelle, Alabama in May. 9781612006314, $32.95, $21.50, hardback, 304p.

The Black Prince and the Capture of a King Poitiers 1356 Marilyn Livingstone and Morgen Witzel The battle of Poitiers in 1356 is less well known than more famous clashes such as Agincourt, however, Poitiers was no less dramatic, and equally important in terms of the course of the Hundred Years War. The capture of King Jean brought France to the brink of total defeat, and led to one of the most devastating and destructive periods in French history. The battle that followed was a tense encounter. The French had learned much from the disastrous defeat at Crécy, and took time to organize and prepare before attacking. Their advance was deliberate and well-planned, yet the result was the same. The French formations disintegrated, and a violent counterattack by English men-at-arms caused it to dissolve entirely. King Jean and his eldest son made a final stand with some of their followers, but in the end they were forced to surrender and were taken back to England as prisoners. The core of the book is a day-by-day description of the campaign of July-September 1356, climaxing with a detailed description of the Battle of Poitiers itself. The detailed account and analysis of the battle and the campaigns that led up to it has a strong focus on the people involved in the campaign: ordinary men-at-arms and noncombatants as well as princes and nobles. 9781612004518, $32.95, $21.50, hardback, 224p.

On D-Day—June 6, 1944—101st and 82nd Airborne dropped onto the Cotentin peninsula hours before the landings, tasked with capturing bridges and positions, taking out German strongpoints and batteries, and securing the exits from Utah and Omaha Beaches. This fully illustrated book details the planning of the airborne element of D-Day, and the execution of the plans until the troops were withdrawn to prepare for the next big airborne operation, Market Garden. 9781612005232, $24.95, $16.50, paperback, 128p.

The 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich Yves Buffetaut The 2nd SS Division, “Das Reich,” was a battlefront mainstay for Nazi Germany throughout WWII—from the invasion of Poland in 1939 to the final surrender in May 1945. Das Reich was the first Waffen SS division created. Tiger I and Tiger II Anthony Tucker-Jones The German Tiger I and Tiger II were the most famous and formidable heavy tanks of the Second World War. In their day, their awesome reputation inspired such apprehension among Allied soldiers that the weaknesses of these brilliant but flawed designs tended to be overlooked. Anthony Tucker-Jones tells the story of their conception and development and reconsiders their operational history. The Tigers were over-engineered, required raw materials that were in short supply, were time-consuming to manufacture and difficult to recover from the battlefield. Only around 1,300 of the Tiger I and fewer than 500 of the Tiger II were produced, so they were never going to make anything more than a local impact on the outcome of the fighting on the Western and Eastern fronts. 9781781590300, $24.95, $16.50, paperback, 176p.

Armoured Warfare and Hitler’s Allies 1941-1945 Anthony Tucker-Jones The rarity of the armored fighting vehicles makes them especially interesting, and that is why Anthony Tucker-Jones’s photographic history is of such value. His selection of previously unpublished wartime photographs provides a visual record of the armored forces thrown into action by Hitler’s allies on the Eastern Front. Illustrated here are the panzers deployed by Bulgaria, Finland, Slovakia, Hungary, Italy, and Romania on the Eastern Front and in the Balkans. 9781781592588, $24.95, $16.50, paperback, 160p.

Fighting in Ukraine A Photographer at War David Mitchelhill-Green Although many pictorial books have been published on Germany’s hapless invasion of the Soviet Union, they are typically a collection of soldiers’ snapshots or ‘official’ photographs taken by Propagandakompanien (PK) reporters. This book is different. It contains an extraordinary personal record of the war captured by a professional photographer, Walter Grimm. The 300 evocative black and white images provide an absorbing insight into the daily life and privations of the ordinary German soldier amid the maelstrom of history’s largest conflict. 9781473848665, $24.95, $16.50, paperback, 176p.

Hitler’s Tank Destroyers Rare Photographs from Wartime Archives Paul Thomas The book covers the development and technology throughout the war that led to tank destroyers like the Panzerjager I, Sturmgeschtz, Marders, Nashorn. Hetzer, Jagdpanzer, Elefant, Jagdtiger IV and Jagdpanther vehicles being developed. As the war progressed the tank destroyers’ fire power became more lethal to meet the ever increasing threat against Soviet armor. Larger and more powerful variants entered the battlefield, but due the overwhelming enemy opposition they were compelled not only to attack armor, but to support ground troops too. This comprehensive account covers all the Nazi’s mobile antitank vehicles in words and images. 9781473896178, $22.95, $14.99, paperback, 136p.

• WORLD WAR 2 - LAND • The Fighting 30th Division They Called Them Roosevelt’s SS Michael Collins, David Hilborn and Martin King In World War I the 30th Infantry Division earned more Medals of Honor than any other American division. What was it about these men that made them so indomitable? This book is a combat chronicle of this illustrious division that takes the reader right to the heart of the fighting through the eyes of those who were actually there. This work follows their story from Normandy to the final victory in Germany, packed with previously untold accounts from the survivors. 9781612003016, $32.95, $21.50, hardback, 360p.

The Tigers of Bastogne Voices of the 10th Armored Division in the Battle of the Bulge Michael Collins and Martin King General Anthony McAuliffe, of the 101st Airborne (and “Nuts” fame), said, “It seems regrettable to me that Combat Command B of the 10th Armored Division didn’t get the credit it deserved at the battle of Bastogne. All the newspaper and radio talk was about the paratroopers. Actually the 10th Armored Division was in there a day before we were and had some very hard fighting before we ever got into it.” Fortunately, in this book, the historical record is finally corrected. With their trademark style, King and Collins, through their firsthand interviews with veterans, bring us straight into the combats of the 10th Armored, equaling the balance between the brave paratroopers and gallant tankers who, together, held off Germany’s last major offensive in the West. 9781612001814, $32.95, $21.50, hardback, 296p.

No Better Place to Die Ste-Mere Eglise, June 1944—The Battle for la Fiere Bridge Robert M. Murphy Reinforced by glider troops, who suffered terribly in their landings from the now-alert Germans, the 505th not only held the vital bridge for three days but launched a counterattack in the teeth of enemy fire to secure their objective once and for all, albeit at gruesome cost. In No Better Place to Die, Robert M. Murphy provides an objective narrative of countless acts of heroism, almost breathtaking in its “you are there” detail. No World War II veteran is better known in 82nd Airborne circles than Robert M. (“Bob”) Murphy. A selection of the Military Book Club 9781935149880, $22.95, $14.99, paperback, 288p.

Dunkirk: Nine Days That Saved An Army A Day-by-Day Account of the Greatest Evacuation John Grehan In this book, adopting a day by day approach, the author provides a clear portrayal of the unfolding drama on the perimeter around Dunkirk, in the port itself and along the beaches to La Panne and the Belgian border. The Tanks of Operation Barbarossa Soviet versus German Armour on the Eastern Front Boris Kavalerchik How was this victory achieved, and were the Soviet tanks really as well designed as is often believed? These are the basic questions Boris Kavalerchik answers in this absorbing study of the tanks and the tank tactics of the two armies that confronted each other at the start of the war on the Eastern Front. Drawing on technical and operational documents from Russian archives, many of which were classified until recently and are unknown to Western readers, he compares the strengths and weakness of the tanks and the different ways in which they were used by the opposing armies. 9781473886803, $42.95, $27.99, hardback, 288p.

The End of the Gallop The Battle for Kharkov February-March 1943 Alexei Isaev Based heavily on inaccessible Soviet records, this book presents a lively account of a pivotal battle on the Eastern Front, illustrated with photographs and maps. In the history of war there are not that many battles that changed one side’s strategy over a considerable period of time, becoming not only a material, but also a psychological factor in decision making. A classic example of this is the Battle of Smolensk in 1941, which forced the German leadership to change their strategy for ‘Barbarossa’ and to deploy their troops towards the northern, and eastern flanks of the SovietGerman front. 9781911512974, $49.95, $32.50, hardback, 160p.

• WORLD WAR 2 - LAND • The Bloody Road to Tunis Destruction of the Axis Forces in North Africa, November 1942-May 1943 David Rolf As the Afrika Korps withdrew after a bruising defeat at El Alamein, it became apparent that Axis forces would not be able to maintain their hold over Libya. Long Range Desert Group Reconnaissance and Raiding Behind Enemy Lines W.B. Kennedy Shaw During the two-and-a-half years’ fighting in the Western Desert of North Africa, which began with the Italian declaration of war in June 1940 and ended in 1943, the Long Range Desert Group became the acknowledged master of the vast desert. Hitler’s Home Front Memoirs of a Hitler Youth Don A. Gregory and Wilhelm R. Gehlen Twelve years of rule by Hitler could have made Germany a third world country after the end of the war. Whatever treatment the Allies had in mind for the Germans could not have been much worse than the conditions already in existence for them after the end of the war. The German economy and infrastructure was already a wreck and the inflation continued after the surrender with prices of essentials rising to double and triple that of 1943. This book is a memoir of Wilhelm Gehlen and his childhood in Nazi Germany, as a Nazi Youth and the awful circumstances which he and his friends and family had to endure during and following the war. 9781473858206, $34.95, $22.99, hardback, 216p.

But Hitler had other plans - to mount an offensive through the Ardennes that would deal such a blow to the Western Allies that they would be willing to negotiate a separate peace. This is the offensive known as the Battle of the Bulge. Could Hitler’s gamble have succeeded? Could he have reached his objective, the port of Antwerp? Peter Elstob unfolds the whole panorama of the ‘last offensive’ which was one of the bloodiest battles of the Second World War, garnished with many acts of individual heroism and many errors of judgment by the firebrand General George Patton, the superb German generals and others. This changed in 1936 and the results of some exercises were set down in a secret study prepared for the Air District school in November of that year. This study of the History of the German Night Fighter Force is a detailed analysis with numerous appendices which provides a comprehensive account of the Luftwaffe’s thoroughness right up to the end when the hunters became the hunted. 9781781555033, $62.95, $40.99, hardback, 304p.

Fighting with the Filthy Thirteen The World War II Story of Jack Womer, Ranger and Paratrooper Stephen C. DeVito and Jack Womer In 2004 the world was first introduced to The Filthy Thirteen, a book describing the most notorious squad of fighting men in the 101st Airborne Division (and the inspiration for the movie “The Dirty Dozen”). In this long awaited work one of the squad’s integral members—and probably its best soldier—reveals his own inside account of fighting as a spearhead of the Screaming Eagles in Normandy, Market Garden, and the Battle of the Bulge. Jack Womer was originally a member of the 29th Infantry Division and was selected to be part of its elite Ranger battalion. In this work, with the help of Stephen DeVito, Jack provides an amazingly frank look at close-quarters combat in Europe, as well as the almost surreal experience of dust-bowl-era GI’s entering country after country in their grapple with the Wehrmacht, finally ending up in Hitler’s mountaintop lair in Germany itself. 9781612001005, $32.95, $21.50, hardback, 304p.

In many instances, ‘flying logbooks’ and official documentation support this exceptionally well-researched book, which includes accounts from Radar Counter Measures, Tactical Reconnaissance, ‘Special Window Forces’ and encompasses aircraft diversely spread between heavy bombers to the light aircraft engaged in spotting targets in Italy. 9781781553046, $34.95, $22.99, hardback, 208p.

Northrop BT-1 Phil H. Listemann The BT-1 belongs to the category of warplanes which just missed, in this case by a couple of weeks, having an operational role in WW2 and has for all practical purposes been forgotten. Nevertheless its importance was probably higher than is currently recognized for at least two reasons. Designed by Ed Heinemann the BT-1 was sufficiently successful to allow him to go on to design such aircraft as the Boston/Havoc, Invader and Skyhawk, some of America’s most famous aircraft. Despite its shortcomings, including a deadly spin, the BT-1 led the way to its successor, the SBD Dauntless, which wrote itself into the pages of the USN’s history during the desperate, and decisive, battles of 1942 and 1943 which took place in the Pacific. 9782952638173, $19.95, $12.99, paperback, 40p.

Grumman FF Phil H. Listemann The Grumman FF, even if it is not particularly well known, is important in that it was the start a long dynasty of carrierbased fighters for the USN which included the famous WW2 Hellcat, the Panther and Cougar of the Korean War and the F-14 Tomcat of the Cold War era. It was also the first USN fighter to use a retractable landing gear. The full history of this two-seat fighter, of which less than 30 examples were produced, is narrated in 40 pages. Its career as a fighter was short with only one front line USN unit operating it for just three years. However it had a longer career as a fighter trainer and was not withdrawn from use until 1942. Each aircraft history is fully documented and the publication is illustrated by over 30 photographs and 11 color profiles. • WORLD WAR 2 - SEA • U-48: The Most Successful U-Boat of the Second World War Franz Kurowski At the outset of the Second World War, Dönitz argued for a 300-strong U-boat fleet, since his force of 57 U-boats ‘could only inflict pin-pricks against British seaborne trade’. In August 1939, U-48 left Germany, commanded by ‘Vaddi’ Schultze, to take up a waiting position around England. It scored its first success on 5 September, when it torpedoed the British freighter Royal Sceptre, then the Winkleigh on 8 September. By 1 August 1941, U-48, the most successful boat of the Second World War, had sunk 56 merchant ships of 322,478 gross tons and one corvette. 9781848326064, $39.95, $25.99, hardback, 208p.

Convoy Peewit: Blitzkrieg from the Air and Sea, 8 August 1940 Andy Saunders During the morning of 7 August 1940 over twenty merchant ships set sail in Convoy CW9 “Peewit” and edged past Dover, hugging the shore, slowly heading westwards as daylight faded. With horrendous suddenness, the E-Boat Flotilla was amongst the convoy as it passed Newhaven. Like a pack of wolves into a flock of sheep, the German boats scattered the convoy and mayhem ensued until the E-Boats called off the attack in the gathering light. Andy Saunders delivers a blow-by-blow account from the perspective of the RAF, Luftwaffe, Merchant Navy, Royal Navy and Kriegsmarine on this milestone day. Using personal accounts of the action, official diaries, logbooks, contemporary records and a host of new photographic material, Convoy Peewit gives a chronological breakdown of events on land, sea and air, successfully setting them into context against the wider picture that was the Battle of Britain. 9781909166004, $24.95, $16.50, paperback, 192p.

• WORLD WAR 2 - SEA • Ian Fleming’s Secret War Craig Cabell While Ian Fleming’s extravagant and glamorous lifestyle is well known, little has been published concerning his contribution during the Second World War. As this book reveals, Fleming, the creator the iconic James Bond, 007, and a man who lived life in the fast lane, spent the Second World War in the ‘cloak-and-dagger’ world of intelligence, counterintelligence and special force units. The author has uncovered through official documentation, private papers and contacts the depth of Fleming’s work in Naval Intelligence. Of particular interest is Fleming’s close association with 30 Assault Unit, a crack special team who took the fight to the enemy. Ian Fleming’s Secret War lifts the veil of secrecy from one of the best known and charismatic literary names of the twentieth century. 9781473853492, $19.95, $12.99, paperback, 208p.

The Type XXI U-Boot Dimitry Mironov and Daniel Pastwa The Type XXI U-boot was one of the few types of weapon that, despite being unable to take part in combat, completely changed the character of naval actions at sea. It was the first true submarine in history. The other types of vessels designed so far were basically “diving ships” that might have been underwater for some time, but most of the time they had to be on the surface because their underwater range was severely limited. Under water they were slow and not maneuverable, and often had to emerge onto the surface to charge their electric batteries. The Type XXI was designed from the outset as a true submarine whose natural environment was to be the deep seas. 9788365437907, $36.95, $24.50, paperback, 60p.

Japanese Cruiser Maya Carlo Cestra Following the defeat in the Guadalcanal campaign, at the beginning of 1943, the Navy Technical Department and The High Command of the Imperial Japanese Navy strived to increase the defensive potential of all their warships. Apart from standard refits of the majority of the Imperial Japanese Navy units, a plan was adopted, which called for reconstruction of two “Takao” class heavy cruisers into anti-aircraft units. This publication shows the cruiser in her anti-aircraft configuration and briefly describes her career. 9788365437877, $36.95, $24.50, paperback, 80p.

The Russian Battleship Marat Oleg Pomoshnikov and Jan Radziemski In the interwar period the battleship “Marat” was considered a symbol of the naval power of the Soviet Union. In her 40-year service, rich in events, she survived four wars, but only in one of them - the civil war - she used her main guns in an engagement with enemy warships. In other conflicts, she served as a monitor rather than a battleship, shelling mainly land targets and carrying out counter-battery fire. At the end, she fell victim of the destructive power of German dive bombers. From that moment, she was a battleship only on paper. Mutilated and devoid of propulsion, she was still biting at the Germans from her remaining guns, and after the war, young pupils of the maritime craft appeared on board. 9788365437822, $36.95, $24.50, paperback, 80p.

Steel Boat, Iron Hearts A U-boat Crewman’s Life Aboard U-505 Hans Goebeler and John Vanzo Hans Goebeler is known as the man who “pulled the plug” on U-505 in 1944 to keep his beloved U-boat out of Allied hands. Using his own experiences, log books, and correspondence with other U-boat crewmen, Goebeler offers rich and very personal details about what life was like in the German Navy under Hitler. Because his first and last posting was to U-505, Goebeler’s perspective of the crew, commanders, and war patrols paints a vivid and complete portrait unlike any other to come out of the Kriegsmarine. U-505 was captured by Captain Dan Gallery’s Guadalcanal Task Group 22.3 on June 4, 1944. Trapped by this “HunterKiller” group, U-505 was depth-charged to the surface, strafed by machine gun fire, and boarded. It was the first ship captured at sea since the War of 1812! 9781932714319, $18.95, $12.50, paperback, 288p.

Building for Battle U-Boat Pens of the Atlantic Battle Philip Kaplan The only thing that ever really frightened me during the war was the U-boat peril - Prime Minister Winston Churchill. The U-boats were under the command of Grand Admiral Karl Doenitz who, for much of the war, effectively guided that strategy. In this new publication from Philip Kaplan, the massive bunkers or ‘pens’ constructed in Brittany by the laborers of the German Organisation Todt are revisited. Illustrated with more than 150 rare and compelling photo images, this book is a richly rewarding journey back across time to some of the most intriguing and electrifying sites from the war years. The Last Big Gun At War & At Sea with HMS Belfast Brian Lavery As she lay in dry dock, devastatingly damaged by one of Hitler’s newly deployed magnetic mines after barely two months in service, few could have predicted the illustrious career that lay ahead for the cruiser HMS Belfast. This tells the wider story of the naval war at sea and vividly portrays the realities for all of life aboard a Second World War battleship. The book will appeal to all those with an interest in military history and life in the wartime Royal Navy. 9781910860014, $36.95, $24.50, hardback, 440p.

The Filthy Thirteen From the Dustbowl to Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest The True Story of “The Dirty Dozen” Richard Killblane and Jake McNiece Since World War II, the American public has become fully aware of the exploits of the 101st Airborne Division, the paratroopers who led the Allied invasions into Nazi-held Europe. But within the ranks of the 101st, a sub-unit attained legendary status at the time, its reputation persisting among veterans over the decades. The book does not draw a new portrait of earnest citizen soldiers. Instead it describes a group of hardscrabble guys whom any respectable person would be loath to meet in a bar or dark alley. But they were an integral part of the U.S. war against Nazi Germany. 9781612005942, $12.95, $8.50, paperback, 256p.

The Drive on Moscow, 1941 Operation Taifun and Germany’s First Great Crisis of World War II Anders Frankson and Niklas Zetterling At the end of September 1941, German soldiers lined up along the frontline west of Moscow. They were well trained and had reasons to hope that the war in the East would be over with one last offensive. The Drive on Moscow recreates the battle from the perspective of the soldiers as well as the generals. The battle, not fought in isolation, had a crucial role in the overall German strategy in the East, and its outcome reveals why the failure of the German assault on Moscow may well have been the true turning point of World War II. 9781612005966, $12.95, $8.50, paperback, 336p.

• WORLD WAR 2 - MISC • Fighting Nazi Occupation British Resistance 1939 - 1945 Malcolm Atkin The Auxiliary Units are the best known, but this perceptive new study based on painstaking original research clearly demonstrates that they were never intended as a resistance organization. Instead, they were designed as a short-term guerrilla force, whilst their Special Duties Branch was designed to spy on the British public as much as any Nazi invader. Meanwhile, deep in the shadows, was the real resistance organization – Section VII of SIS. These conclusions will change our understanding of the preparations made in Britain to resist Nazi occupation. 9781473833777, $34.95, $22.99, hardback, 224p.

Sons of the Reich II Panzer Corps, Normandy, Arnhem, Ardennes, Eastern Front Major General Michael Reynolds CB This meticulously researched book documents the actions of the 9th and 10th SS Panzer Divisions from activation until October 1944, and the 2nd and 9th SS Divisions from December 1944 until the end of the war. This period encompasses the Battle of Normandy, the escape from the Falaise Pocket, the MARKET GARDEN episode and Hitler’s last great offensive in the West, the Battle of the Bulge. Sons of the Reich also dismantles the myth that the Waffen SS were a volunteer force of brainwashed thugs and fanatics, in fact II SS Panzer Division were ordinary conscripts, whose tenacity (most notably at Arnhem in September 1944) was admired by friend and foe alike. 9781848840003, $24.99, $16.50, paperback, 416p.

Front-Line Stalingrad Victor Nekrasov Victor Nekrasov’s masterpiece Front-Line Stalingrad is one of the classic novels to come out of the pitiless fighting on the Eastern Front in the Second World War. Nekrasov himself experienced the front-line fighting – he served as a sapper in the trenches and dugouts of the ruined city. He drew on his personal recollections in this graphic but somberly realistic account. His writing shows the heroism, comradeship and humor of the Red Army soldiers, but also the violence and anger of men whose nerves are frayed to breaking point. His extraordinary novel, long out print, is reissued to mark the seventieth anniversary of the decisive Second World War battle. 9781848847712, $19.99, $12.99, paperback, 336p.

The Secret Betrayal of Britain’s Wartime Allies The Appeasement of Stalin and its Post-War Consequences Jim Auton MBE As a British airman of the Second World War, Jim Auton dropped bombs on enemy targets all over central and eastern Europe. Working undercover on the stated objective of investigating potential East/West trading opportunities, he was to discover, to his great dismay, the final fates of the various partisan operations that he had so bravely endeavored to assist. In this, his second work of autobiographical memoir, Auton provides an enthralling firsthand account of intrigue, assassination, espionage and shameful betrayal on both sides of the Iron Curtain. 9781783831586, $39.95, $25.99, hardback, 216p.

Voices from the Past: Channel Islands Invaded The German Attack on the British Isles in 1940 told through Eyewitness Accounts, Newspaper Reports, Parliamentary Debates, Memoirs and Diaries Simon Hamon In the summer of 1940 the British Isles stood isolated and alone facing the might of a seemingly unstoppable German war machine. Fortunately the full breadth of the English Channel held back Hitler’s armies, and his ambition. To abandon British territory to the enemy was unthinkable, yet the defense of the Channel Islands was impracticable. This is the story of the muddled evacuation, of homes, of the German bombing of the islands, the fear of those left behind, and of those first days of German Occupation, told by the Islanders themselves. 9781473851597, $39.95, $25.99, hardback, 256p.

WORLD WAR 1 Zeebrugge The Greatest Raid of All Christopher Sandford A force drawn from the Royal Navy and Royal Marines set out on ships and submarines to try to block the key strategic port, in a bold attempt to stem the catastrophic losses being inflicted on British shipping by German submarines. The fire and bloodshed of the occasion is the book’s centerpiece, but there is also room for the family and private lives of the men who volunteered in the hundreds for what they knew effectively to be a suicide mission. Zeebrugge gives a very real sense of the existence of the ordinary British men and women of 100 years ago – made extraordinary by their role in what Winston Churchill called the ‘most intrepid and heroic single armed adventure of the Great War.’ 9781612005041, $32.95, $21.50, hardback, 272p.

• WORLD WAR 1 • Carnage The German Front in World War One Alistair Smith These amazingly well preserved photographs originate from German collection. The collection portrays life and conditions in the German trenches, the carnage of the wrecked villages and buildings in which they lived and fought and views of the destruction wrought by the Allied offensives. This is not a book for the feint hearted since it clearly portrays the true horror of World War One as experienced by the German Army. Authors: Jon Sutherland has written extensively on military history and warfare. Much of his previous work has concerned the American involvement in the European in World War I and the European theater of World Wars I & II. Diane Canwell has written works on European history and is much involved in the research for this book. 9781848846821, $24.95, $16.50, paperback, 144p.

Gallipoli and the Dardanelles 1915-1916 John Grehan and Martin Mace The fighting in the Gallipoli or Dardanelles campaign began in 1915 as a purely naval affair undertaken partly at the instigation of Winston Churchill, who, as First Lord of the Admiralty, had entertained plans of capturing the Dardanelles as early as September 1914. The campaign was the first major battle undertaken by the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC), and is often considered to mark the birth of national consciousness in both of these countries. For the Turkish forces it would prove a major victory. 9781781593448, $39.95, $25.99, hardback, 192p.

Winged Victory V.M.Yeates There is no bitter snarl nor self-pity in this classic novel about the air war of 19141918, based very largely on the author’s experiences. An Air Fighter’s Scrapbook Ira Jones Ira “Taffy” Jones was a wellknown air fighter during the First World War, having scored about 40 victories flying SE5 scouts in France with 74 Squadron. Jones recorded stories drawn from his own experiences during the war and wrote of the many personalities he had met or known by association, both during the war and in the post-war flying years. An Air Fighter’s Scrap Book recreates the atmosphere of the days of the biplane, of wartime flying, of early peacetime adventures in the air, the development of civil aviation, and breathtaking record beating flights, all evoking the sheer delight in flying that characterized those early years. 9781612001500, $29.95, $19.50, hardback, 368p.

Jagdstaffel 356 The Story of a German Fighter Squadron M.E. Kähnert Although the author has given this Jagdstaffel a fictitious number and changed the names of the pilots composing it, the incidents related in this book have the genuine ring of truth and will be recognized as facts by anyone who has had experience of flying on the Western Front or who has studied it since. Many experts believe this work draws on the experience of the Bavarian Jasta 35, which flew against the British; however, whatever its real number may have been, Jagdstaffel 356 undoubtedly fought in the air over Flanders in 1918. This book is an exciting account, obviously written from firsthand experience, of the air war from the German side. 9781612001449, $29.95, $19.50, hardback, 128p.

Pioneers of Aerial Combat Air Battles of the First World War Michael Foley This publication consolidates a range of stories, insights, and facts that, when combined, offer a vivid impression of events as they unfolded. The reality of conflict gave aviation engineers and designers the opportunity to test their craft in the harshest of environments, pushing the benchmark ever higher in terms of what could be achieved. Sure to appeal to aviation enthusiasts and historians alike, this work offers the reader a full account of the developmental early days of flight. 9781781592724, $29.95, $19.50, hardback, 192p.

• WORLD WAR 1 • Zeppelin Onslaught The Forgotten Blitz 1914–1915 Ian Castle From the first raid in December 1914, aerial attacks gradually increased through 1915, culminating in highly damaging assaults on London in September and October. London, however, was not the only recipient of German bombs, with counties from Northumberland to Kent also experiencing the indiscriminate death and destruction found in this new theater of war – the Home Front. This German air campaign against the United Kingdom was the first sustained strategic aerial bombing campaign in history.Yet it has become the forgotten Blitz. Ace of the Black Cross The Memoirs of Ernst Udet Ernst Udet Above the mud and misery of the trenches and the endless slugging matches of the First World War another contest was played out with all the military glamour, chivalric values and deadly outcome of a mediaeval, knightly tournament. Ace of the Black Cross also illustrates the way in which war and defeat left this young generation of tough, spirited, individuals rootless and restless. After the war Udet used his flying skills to give displays to crowds of gawping onlookers, a circus act that left him frustrated and resentful. In 1941, disillusioned and depressed, he shot himself. On the wall before he died he scrawled a message for Göring: ‘Iron man, you have betrayed me’. 9781848327085, $34.95, $22.99, hardback, 256p.

No Parachute A Classic Account of War in the Air in WWI Arthur Gould Lee From the young airmen who took their frail machines high above the trenches of World War I and fought their foes in single combat there emerged a renowned company of brilliant aces – among them Ball, Bishop, McCudden, Collishaw and Mannock – whose legendary feats have echoed down half a century. British Submarines At War 1914 - 1918 Edwyn Gray Originally published in 1970 and out of print for nearly thirty years, this book has already earned its place as a classic of submarine history by an author with an international reputation for being second-to-none in evoking the claustrophobic horror of war beneath the waves. Accurate in detail, yet written with humanity and humor, it tells the story of Britain’s pioneer submarines during the 1914-1918 War during which their crews battled courageously in atrocious conditions against a skilled and ruthless enemy and an equally unforgiving sea. Freshly illustrated, this second edition is a timely tribute to the gallant pioneers who created the legacy of dogged courage, determination, and standards of excellence which remain the proud hallmarks of the Royal Navy’s submarine service today. 9781473853454, $24.95, $16.50, paperback, 224p.

A Wood Called Bourlon The Cover-up after Cambrai, 1917 William Moore Mr Moore has studied the evidence (much of it previously unpublished) contained in the inevitable enquiry that followed the disaster and he seeks to answer a number of questions. Was Field-Marshal Haig really as dour as he has been portrayed or was he a reckless gambler and was General Byng, whose troops and guns were captured, really a brilliant planner or a haughty aristocrat dedicated to proving that cavalry still had a place on the battlefield? Any why were they both obsessed with capturing Bourlon Ridge on which stood the sinister Bourlon Wood? The British were always reputed to take a perverse interest in their own military blunders.Mr Moore’s book throws new light on a dark episode in British Military History. 9781473821262, $29.95, $19.50, paperback

The Zeebrugge & Ostend Raids 1918 Deborah Lake The Zeebrugge Raid is one of the most exciting small actions, not just of the First World War but in British history. The Admiralty claimed that the war would be lost unless the submarine attacks were curtailed. Admiral Keyes proposed blocking the ports. At Zeebrugge, a diversionary landing on the Mole - an enormous breakwater - would divert attention from the blockships as they entered the harbor. 9781473837966, $24.95, $16.50, paperback, 224p.

High Wood Michael Harrison Bois de Fourcaux, a woodland set in the area of the Somme battlefields, dominates the surrounding landscape. Known to the British Army as ‘High Wood’, the invading Germans had occupied the wood as it proved to be a natural field fortification and a menace that had to be neutralized. This is the story of the largely amateur British Army of 1916. Lessons were learned in the roaring furnace of the Somme that would transform the fighting ability of the British irrevocably: High Wood was at the epicenter of that learning process. The book contains detailed maps from the time of the High Wood battles using the excellent British Trench maps and, importantly, an explanation on the use of the numbered grid system, which enables the visitor to locate, to within 5 yards, the site of an action that took place 100 years ago. Photographs are also included to enhance the visitor experience. Join us for the journey 9781473834095, $19.95, $12.99, paperback, 184p.

• WORLD WAR 1 • Salute of Guns Donald Boyd This book gives the reader a dramatic insight into the story of artillery in the First World War. Donald Boyd joined his local Territorial Force artillery unit in September 1914. Commissioned in 1915, he learned his trade in France from unsympathetic pre-war Indian Army regulars who did not understand how war was changing. The author is frank about his problems and convincingly conveys the relationships within his sub-unit, which helped or hindered his struggle to stay in the front line. A new Foreword by Michael Orr sets Boyd’s memoir in context and documents its reliability from the archives. 9781848848504, $39.95, $25.99, hardback, 256p.

With the German Guns Four Years on the Western Front Herbert Sulzbach At once harrowing and lighthearted, Sulzbach’s exceptional diary has been highly praised since its original publication in Germany in 1935. With the reprint of this classic account of trench warfare it records the pride and exhilaration of what to him was the fight for a just cause. It is one of the very few available records of an ordinary German soldier during the First World War. “One of the most notable books on the Great War. It is a book which finely expressed the true soldierly spirit on its highest level; the combination of a high sense of duty, courage, fairness and chivalry.” Sir Basil Liddell Hart 9781848848641, $24.99, $16.50, paperback, 256p.

Into Battle A Seventeen-Year-Old Joins Kitchener’s Army E.W. Parker Written well over 90 years ago while the experiences of youth were still fresh in the author’s mind, this is the story of a seventeen-year-old boy from the time he joined Kitchener’s Army, as one of the first hundred thousand in 1914, until he found himself in hospital - an officer with the Military Cross - recovering from his last wound, on the day of the Armistice, 11 November, 1918. In no way a formal record of the great and terrible events it describes, this is a purely personal, almost private, account. Interspersed with moments of pity and humor, it is a record, which in its details, direct simplicity, and manner of telling, comes nearer to the truth than many more ambitious accounts. 9781781591550, $24.95, $16.50, paperback, 112p.

Bloody Red Tabs Frank Davies It is the purpose of this book to show not only how the myth was born and grew but how totally at odds it is with the facts. Biographies of over 200 officers who held the rank of Brigadier-General or above who were killed or wounded during the war show how closely involved the men at the top were with the men at the front. Ironically, as the authors point out, this was more than just a waste of blood, for these were the very men whose experience was vital to the successful prosecution of the war. 9781783462377, $24.95, $16.50, paperback, 240p.

The Burgoyne Diaries The First Winter at Ypres with the Royal Irish Rifles Gerald Achilles Burgoyne These are the diaries of Gerald Achilles Burgoyne, written from the trenches just south of Ypres while he was with the Royal Irish Rifles in the Great War. Despite conditions of all-pervading mud, bitter cold and wind, let alone the bursting shells and the ‘sipping’ bullet, Burgoyne dispassionately recorded and drew what he saw. These vivid accounts, written on pages of a notebook, were almost daily sent back to his wife. Each day is a gem of interest, from the very first entry in November 1914 to the last in May 1915. This book is essential reading for all Great War enthusiasts and those wishing to learn more about the key conflicts that occurred in 1914 and 1915. 9781473827585, $39.95, $25.99, hardback, 256p.

Escaping from the Kaiser The Dramatic Experiences of a Tommy POW H.W.Tustin In late summer 1916 together with a Canadian POW, Gerrie Burk, the author escaped over the wire. For the next 10 days traveling by night, sleeping rough and stealing basic food they headed for Holland. Somehow they miraculously managed to avoid recapture despite the closest of calls. Once on the Dutch coast they found a boat, SS Grenadier to carry them across the minestrewn, submarine infested North Sea to England, arriving on 18 September. This amazing story of war, imprisonment, escape and survival concludes with the author’s wife recalling the hero’s welcome home, the joyful reunion and his proposal of marriage. 9781473821941, $39.95, $25.99, hardback, 226p.

• WORLD WAR 1 • Defiance! Withstanding the Kaiserschlacht G.H.F. Nichols George Nichols was an artillery officer serving with the 82nd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Nichols wrote a powerful account of the Kaiser’s last great offensive battle from inside the eye of the storm, and it is one of the few primary source accounts which are told from the often overlooked perspective of the British artillery men. First published in 1919, this wonderful primary source has long been out of print and its welcome return makes for essential reading for anyone with an interest in the Great War. 9781473833562, $34.95, $22.99, hardback, 272p.

Prisoners of the British Internees and Prisoners of War During the First World War Michael Foley Much of what has been written about the treatment of prisoners of war held by the British in various conflicts point to the belief that they have often been treated in a more caring and compassionate way than the prisoners of other countries. This would seem to point out that Germans held in Britain were treated leniently while there were claims of British prisoners being mistreated by the Germans. Was the British sense of fair play present in the prison camps and did this sense include the press and public who called for harsher treatment of the Germans in captivity? This book will examine the truth of these views while also looking at the number of camps set up in the country. 9781781554791, $34.95, $22.99, hardback, 192p.

I Survived Didn’t I? The Great War Reminiscences of Private ‘Ginger’ Bryne Joy Cave Charlie (“Ginger”) Byrne was a typical young “tommy” who had no liking or aptitude for writing, but at the age of 82, sound in body and having a mind blessed with total recall, he was persuaded to tell his story to an interested and observant listener. It is not a narrative of grand strategy, nor a recital of epic heroism (although courage enough is evident), but the reminiscence of the ordinary infantryman - the individual viewpoint of one tiny cog in a colossal war machine. Through the account of chaos shines the tolerant good humor and forbearance of the soldier who fought and survived. 9781473821248, $19.95, $12.99, paperback, 144p.

Soldier from the Wars Returning Charles Carrington The author waited nearly fifty years before writing it, and the perspective of history enhances its value. He writes only of the battles in which he participated, though his comments on affairs beyond his knowledge at the time, through later study and reflection, are pungent and stimulating. Among other topics, he describes the politicians, the generals, Kitchener’s Army, Hore-Belisha, German gas attacks, Picardy, dugouts, tanks, the sex-life of the soldier, scrounging. trench kits and the censoring of letters. The author saw the First World War from below, as a fighting soldier in a line regiment. 9781473841840, $24.95, $16.50, paperback, 288p.

The Great War Explained Philip Stevens This is much more than just another book to add to the thousands on The Great War. It sets out to fill a gap. Written for the layman by a layman (who is also an articulate and experienced battlefield guide) it summarizes the key events and contributions of key individuals, some well, others unknown but with a story to tell. To get a true picture of this monumental event in history, it is necessary to grasp the fundamentals, be they military, political, social or simply human. Douglas Haig As I Knew Him George S. Duncan First published in 1966, this is a memoir by G.S. Duncan, a Church of Scotland minister with whom Haig felt such an affinity that he had him transferred to GCHQ. Every Sunday the C-in-C went to the Church of Scotland service to hear him preach. The book’s representation of Haig is unremittingly positive. Duncan writes that he had previously been unwilling to write about a personal relationship with a man who studiously avoided publicity, preferring to leave the future to be judge of the past. He became aware, however, that in recent years many writers have presented to the public a portrait of Haig which is so distorted as to be essentially false. This personal memoir is therefore designed to redress the balance. 9781473827707, $39.95, $25.99, hardback, 144p.

Gallipoli Sniper The Remarkable Life of Billy Sing John Hamilton ‘This is a well-researched, detailed and compelling story.’ Defender Magazine Billy Sing was a small, dark man – and a deadly killer. When, as a member of the Australian Imperial Force 5th Light Horse, he was thrust onto the narrow strip of land held by the Australians on Gallipoli, he witnessed the terrible effects of the Turkish snipers and decided to fight fire with fire. Using a simple Lee Enfield .303 rifle, Sing began to pick off unwary Turks who exposed themselves. Assisted by a ‘spotter’ who would single out targets for him, Sing acquired an unrivaled reputation as he killed increasing numbers of enemy soldiers. This is a vivid account of the merciless nature of the fighting in the Gallipoli Campaign from an award-winning journalist and best-selling author. 9781848329041, $34.95, $22.99, hardback, 272p.

Irishmen in the Great War: Reports From the Front 1915 Tom Burnell Following the success of the first book in the series covering 1914, this contains over 150 hand-picked news stories taken from a selection of twenty-seven Irish newspapers throughout the course of the year. These rare and untapped stories, many of which have not seen the light of day since the 1920s, give a unique insight into life on the front line and on the home front during the First World War. These are the accounts of local men at the front, letters sent home from soldiers in the trenches at Flanders, graphic narratives from allied gun turrets, Irish nuns at Ypres, Irish POWs held in Germany, and many more. Amongst the articles of bravery and death, there are also stories of humor and quirkiness. 9781473823457, $39.95, $25.99, hardback, 256p.

The Somme: The Epic Battle in the Soldiers’ own Words and Photographs Richard Van Emden It was there that Kitchener’s famous ‘Pals’ Battalions were first sent into action en masse and it was a battlefield where many of the dreams and aspirations of a nation, hopeful of victory, were agonizingly dashed. Because of its legendary status, the Somme has been the subject of many books, and many more will come out next year. However, nothing has ever been published on the Battle in which the soldiers’ own photographs have been used to illustrate both the campaign’s extraordinary comradeship and its carnage. 9781473885172, $29.95, $19.50, paperback, 368p.

American Expeditionary Force France 1917-1918 Jack Holroyd When the United States entered the war in April 1917 the belligerents were approaching exhaustion. It had been hoped by the Generals in both Britain and France that untold numbers of fresh troops would be assimilated into their respective commands. The book is split into eight chapters which deal with different pivotal moments during the First World War from the American perspective, from the reasons behind the American involvement in the war and initial training to the major battles at Cantigny, Chateau Thierry and St. Mihiel. This story is told in pictures gleaned from the official archives which were first published in 1920 and now presented for reexamination and public awareness in the Images of War series. 9781848848771, $19.99, $12.99, paperback, 144p.

Posters of the Great War Published in association with Historial de la Grande Guerre, Péronne, France, Frédérick Hadley and Martin Pegler In the most graphic and colorful fashion they promoted values such as patriotism and sacrifice. By using rallying symbols such as flags as well as historical and mythical models, they sought to maintain morale and draw people together by stirring up anger against the enemy. The sheer inventiveness of the poster artists is demonstrated as they focused on key aspects of the propaganda campaign in Britain, France, Germany, America and Russia. The diversity of their work is displayed here in chapters that cover recruitment, money raising, the soldier, the enemy, the family and the home front, films and the post-war world. 9781781592892, $34.95, $22.99, hardback, 160p.

• WORLD WAR 1 • Open Cockpit Arthur Gould Lee Thanks to a broken leg during flight school, Arthur Stanley Gould Lee gained valuable additional time flying trainers before he was posted to France during World War I. Author of three war books, this is by far his best. Lee puts you in the cockpit in a riveting account of life as a fighter pilot at the front. At turns humorous and dramatic, this thoughtful, enlightening, true account is a classic to be ranked with Winged Victory by V. M.Yeates, also published by Grub Street. 9781911621041, $17.95, $11.99, paperback, 224p.

• MODELING & REFERENCE • SU-85 and SU-100 on the Battlefield Neil Stokes The SU-85 and SU-100 selfpropelled guns were based on the proven chassis of the T-34 Medium Tank, and were used primarily in the antitank role. From mid-1943 onward, the SU-85 gave the Soviet forces a useful tank destroyer with a significant firepower advantage over the T-34’s 76.2mm gun. With the introduction of the T-34/85 in early 1944, the SU-85 design was upgraded with a 100mm gun to retain its firepower advantage, though a shortage of 100mm guns led to a number of improved hulls being armed with 85mm guns as the SU-85M. • COLD WAR • Crusader General Donn Starry and the Army of His Times Mike Guardia and General Martin Dempsey (USA, Ret.) Throughout his career he worked to improve training, leadership and conditions for the men who served under him. Like most battlefield commanders from the Vietnam era, Starry’s legacy is often overshadowed by the controversy of the war itself and the turmoil of the immediate postwar Army. However, with the invasion of Cambodia and the development of AirLand Battle, it is hard to imagine anyone who has had a greater impact on modern maneuver warfare. In this new biography of General Donn Starry, armor officer Mike Guardia examines the life and work of this pioneering, crusading officer using extracts from interviews with veterans and family, and from Starry’s personal papers. 9781612005447, $32.95, $21.50, hardback, 224p.

Borneo Boys RAF Helicopter Pilots in Action – Indonesia Confrontation 1962-66 Roger Annett The author experienced firsthand the events detailed here. Flying with 215 Squadron, and co-piloting Argosy transport aircraft deep over Malayan jungle terrain from 1963 to 65, he is well placed to provide a colorful account of this dramatic period. Following a reunion of RAF Whirlwind veterans of Borneo, Annett began work on this record of their collective experience, attempting to stir the memories of both war veterans and civilians alike. The book describes the oppositions, antagonisms, victories, and defeats experienced on the island. Borneo itself proved to be one of the biggest challenges from a military perspective, and it is brought to life here. The story of the ‘Borneo Boys’ of the title traces a journey from new recruits at boot camp to flying training, and on to Borneo itself. This book swoops its focus on the young men who were called upon to fly over such confusion, far away from home. Soviet Strategic Bombers The Hammer in the Hammer and the Sickle Jason Nicholas Moore The history of Soviet strategic bombers after the Second World War is a fascinating one. This comprehensive history of these aircraft will deal not just with the development of aircraft that entered service, but of experimental aircraft as well, and projects that were never even built will also be explored. The service life of these bombers will be covered, and their use outside of the Soviet Union will be described in detail. The Soviet Union built some of the first jet-powered strategic bombers, and the Tu-95 Bear, the only swept-winged turboprop bomber to ever enter service, remains in service to this day. Less successful aircraft, like the graceful but problem-plagued supersonic Tu-22 Blinder, and the Mach 3 Sukhoi T-4 will also be examined. 9781781555972, $50.00, $32.50, hardback, 272p.

In the Service of the Sultan A first-hand account of the Dhofar Insurgency Ian Gardiner While the Americans were fighting in Vietnam, a struggle of even greater strategic significance was taking place in the Middle East: the Sultanate of Oman guards the entrance to the Arabian Gulf, and thus controls the movement of oil from that region. This book tells the largely unknown story of a small number of British officers who led Muslim soldiers in this hard-fought anti-insurgency war which has shaped today’s Gulf. After outlining the historical, geographical and political background, the book describes military action in a stark and mountainous environment. 9781844154678, $39.95, $25.99, hardback, 208p.

With the SAS and Other Animals A Vet’s Experiences During the Dhofar War 1974 Andrew Higgins In 1970 at the height of the Cold War, the young Sandhursttrained Sultan Qaboes of Oman, with secret British military backing, took on the communist rebels in a fierce but little known war. The local economy was a primitive one based on agriculture, and the author found himself solely responsible for the veterinary care of a territory the size of Hungary. His firsthand experiences and anecdotes of life dealing with every level of Omani society from rulers to black slaves and their varied livestock make for wonderfully atmospheric and often amusing reading. In short, this is an unusual and potent mix of Special Forces action and veterinary experiences. 9781473843622, $24.95, $16.50, paperback, 224p.

Air War Over the Putumayo Colombian and Peruvian air operations during the 1932-1933 conflict Amaru Tincopa and Santaigo Rivas During 1932, the occupation of the Colombian towns of Leticia and Tarapacá by Peruvian troops and civilians, in the Amazon region, led to a conflict that almost ended in a total war between both countries. Aviation played an important role on both sides due to the complicated jungle environment. After some ground and air combats, a ceasefire was agreed and the conflict was resolved. But the war over the Putumayo area became the baptism of fire for the Peruvian and Colombian air forces leading to the development of its military aviation, which was almost nonexistent in 1932. This book is supported by a large number of rare and previously unpublished images, and specially commissioned color profiles showing camouflage and markings. 9781912390236, $29.95, $19.50, paperback, 96p.

Special Forces Berlin Clandestine Cold War Operations of the US Army’s Elite, 1956–1990 James Stejskal It is a little-known fact that during the Cold War, two U.S. Army Special Forces detachments were stationed behind the Iron Curtain in West Berlin. US military planners decided they needed a plan to slow the juggernaut they expected when and if a war began. The plan was Special Forces Berlin. Special Forces Berlin was a one of a kind unit that had no parallel. It left a legacy of a new type of soldier expert in unconventional warfare, one that was sought after for other deployments. 9781612004440, $32.95, $21.50, hardback, 336p.

High Stakes Britain’s Air Arms in Action 1945 - 1990 Vic Flintham After the dust of World War II had settled, the military position of the UK was far from straightforward. It was of course allied to the USA and part of NATO, but it was at odds with the former in maintaining an Empire and the two nations also had competing oil interests in the Middle East. The UK’s engagement in war after 1945 was thus a strange mixture ranging from homeland security through insular actions within the colonies or protectorates to preserve empire to playing a major role in confronting the USSR. 9781844158157, $80.00, $52.50, hardback, 432p.

Witness to War Crimes The Memoirs of a Peacekeeper in Bosnia Colm Doyle The early 1990s saw Europe’s first conflict for almost 40 years when bitter fighting broke out in the former Yugoslav republic. Colonel Colm Doyle of the Irish Army found himself in the midst of this appalling civil war when in October 1991 he became first a European Community Monitor and almost immediately Head of the Monitor Mission in besieged Sarajevo. In this overdue memoir, he describes his role mediating, negotiating and persuading political and military leaders of all sides to halt the seemingly inexorable path to all-out war. With his unprecedented access, Doyle’s personal account can claim to be one of the most significant works on the brutal Bosnian War. 9781526736116, $42.95, $27.99, hardback, 296p.

The First Jihad The Battle for Khartoum and the Dawn of Militant Islam Daniel Allen Butler Before there was Osama bin Laden, Abu al-Zarqawi or Ayatollah Khomeini, there was the Mahdi—the “Expected One”—who raised the Arabs in pan-tribal revolt against infidels and apostates in the late 19thcentury Sudan. In today’s world the Mahdi’s words have been repeated almost verbatim by the Muslim jihadists who have attacked New York, Washington, Madrid and London, and continue to wage war from the Hindu Kush to the Mediterranean. Along with Saladin, who once defeated a holy war, the Mahdi stands as an Islamic icon who once launched his own successful crusade against the West. This deeply researched work reminds us that the “clash of civilizations” that supposedly came upon us in September 2001 in fact began much earlier. This book is essential reading for all those who seek to understand the roots of our current relationship with Islam. 9781612005935, $12.95, $8.50, paperback, 256p.

The Quick and the Dead The Perils of Post-War Test Flying William Arthur Waterton First published in 1956, but still relevant and thought-provoking today, this book is an absolute revelation on test flying with the British aircraft organizations and manufacturers in the 1950s. Written from the pilot’s viewpoint, with refreshing candor and honesty – which allegedly cost him his job at the Daily Express – this account details what really went on behind the scenes in the defense world. Waterton pulls no punches in recounting the non cooperation of civil servants and designers in improving/altering recognized faults when developing aircraft – to the cost of lives lost. Mainly centering on his work with the mighty Gloster Meteor and the Javelin interceptors, this is an astonishing insight into the workings of the British aircraft industry. Uncomfortable reading for many, it was seen by his supporters as a wakeup call at a time when British ingenuity and prowess were being overtaken by the Americans and Russians. 9781908117274, $29.95, $19.50, hardback, 248p.

SAS: Secret War in South East Asia Peter Dickens From 1963 to 1966, Britain successfully waged a secret war to keep the Federation of Malaysia free from domination by Soekarno’s Indonesia and Chinese Communists. At the forefront of this campaign were the men of the Special Air Service (SAS), an elite branch of the British military whose essence is secrecy and whose tools are boldness, initiative, surprise, and high skill. As the conflict continued, SAS teams went beyond the borders into Indonesia, where they tracked down enemy camps, fired on supply convoys, staged ambushes, and attacked enemy soldiers in their riverboats. This book recreates what it was really like to fight in the jungles of Malaysia. It also captures the bravery and relentless pursuit of excellence that make the SAS the elite and prestigious regiment it is. 9781473855991, $29.95, $19.50, paperback, 304p.

• COLD WAR • MODERN • British Airship Bases of the Twentieth Century Malcolm Fife Numerous books have been written on airships, but few concentrate on their bases and infrastructure to support their operations. The locations where these giants of the sky were constructed are described as well as the proposed overseas passenger terminals. The latter part of this enthralling and detailed book chronicles the attempt to establish the airship as a means of transport to link together the far flung lands of the British Empire. The Dragon’s Teeth The Chinese People’s Liberation Army—Its History, Traditions, and Air Sea and Land Capability in the 21st Century Benjamin Lai When Mao Zedong proclaimed The People’s Republic of China in 1949, China was a poor and wrecked society after years of continuous wars. For centuries, in fact, China had been seen as a sort of plunder-zone to be invaded, and then a backwater until the late 1980s, when domestic policy brought about monumental changes. The result was that in the past quarter-century China has grown to be the second largest economy in the world, and its military has grown proportionately. This book describes some of the lesser known battles and wars the Chinese have undertaken, and the development of their key weapons systems. A Chronology of Ancient Greece Timothy Venning This book offers a coherent narrative of the politico-military history of ancient Greece. It commences with the necessarily approximate course of events in Bronze and early Iron Age, as estimated by the most reliable scholarship plus the legendary accounts of this period. From the Persian Wars onwards, a year-by-year chronology is constructed from the ancient historical sources. Where possible a day-by-day narrative is given. The text is divided into events per geographical area for each date. Detailed accounts are provided for battles and political crises where the sources allow this, and where not much is known for certain the different opinions of historians are referenced en route. Sparta Fall of a Warrior Nation Philip Matyszak Universally admired in 479 BC, the Spartans were masters of the Greek world by 402 BC, only for their state to collapse in the next generation. This is a chronicle of political failure and also a lesson in how to go down fighting. Even with the Roman legions set to overwhelm their city, the Spartans never gave up. Sparta: Fall of a Warrior Nation tells a seldom-told tale, yet one rich in heroes and villains, epic battles and political skulduggery. 9781473874725, $32.95, $21.50, hardback, 192p.

• ANCIENT & MEDIEVAL • Sulla A Dictator Reconsidered Lynda Telford Lucius Cornelius Sulla is one of the central figures of the late Roman Republic. Lynda Telford believes Sulla’s portrayal as a monstrous, brutal tyrant is unjustified. While accepting that he was responsible for much bloodshed, she contends that he was no more brutal than many of his contemporaries who have received a kinder press. Lynda Telford gives a long overdue reappraisal of this significant personality, considering such factors as the effect of his disfiguring illness. The portrait that emerges is a subtle and nuanced one; her Sulla is very much a human, not a monster. 9781783030484, $39.95, $25.99, hardback, 304p.

Fields of Battle Retracing Ancient Battlefields Richard Evans Richard Evans revisits the sites of a selection of Greek and Roman battles and sieges to seek new insights. The battle narratives in ancient sources can be a thrilling read and form the basis of our knowledge of these epic events, but they can just as often provide an incomplete or obscure record. Details, especially those related to topographical and geographical issues which can have a fundamental importance to military actions, are left tantalizingly unclear to the modern reader. By combining the ancient sources and latest archaeological findings with his personal observations on the ground, Richard Evans brings new perspectives to the dramatic events of the distant past. 9781848847965, $39.95, $25.99, hardback, 256p.

Roman Conquests: Macedonia and Greece Philip Matyszak In the late 3rd century BC, Philip V of Macedon allied with Hannibal in pursuit of his dream for a new Macedonian empire. The stage was set for the clash of two of the most successful military systems of the ancient world, the Roman legions versus the Macedonian phalanx. The home of Alexander the Great fell under the power of Rome, along with the rest of Greece, the cradle of Western Civilization. Philip Matyszak gives a clear narrative of the course of these wars, explaining how the Roman war machine coped with formidable new foes and the challenges of unfamiliar terrain. Four Days in September The Battle of Teutoberg Jason R. Abdale For twenty years, the Roman Empire conquered its way through modern-day Germany. However, when at last all appeared to be under control, a catastrophe erupted that claimed the lives of 10,000 legionnaires and laid Rome’s imperial ambitions for Germania into the dust. In late September of 9 AD, three Roman legions were attacked in a four-day battle with the Germanic barbarians. The Romans were taken completely by surprise, betrayed by a member of their own ranks: the secret rebel leader, Arminius. The defeat was a heavy blow to both Rome’s military and its pride. Roman Conquests: Asia Minor, Syria and Armenia Richard Evans The Roman army defeated the Seleucids at the epic battle of Magnesia in 190 BC. God’s City Byzantine Constantinople Nic Fields In the late eleventh century Constantinople was the largest and wealthiest city in Christendom, the seat of the Byzantine emperor, Christ’s vice-regent on earth, and the center of a predominately Christian empire, steeped in Greek cultural and artistic influences, yet founded and maintained by a Roman legal and administrative system. Despite the amalgam of Greek and Roman influences, however, its language and culture was definitely Greek. Constantinople truly was the capital of the Roman empire in the East, and from its founding under the first Constantinus to its fall under the eleventh and last Constantinus the inhabitants always called themselves Romaioi, Romans, not Hellênikés, Greeks. Over its millennium long history the empire and its capital experienced many vicissitudes that included several periods of waxing and waning and more than one ‘golden age’. 9781473895089, $39.95, $25.99, hardback, 296p.

Wellington’s Hidden Heroes The Dutch and the Belgians at Waterloo Veronica Baker-Smith The courage of British troops in the Battle of Waterloo has been rightly praised, but the fact that one-third of the forces which gave him his narrow victory were subjects of the King of the Netherlands has been almost completely ignored. This book seeks to correct a grave injustice through the study of Dutch sources, the majority of which have never been used by English-speaking historians. This book reveals a new dimension of the famous campaign, and includes many unseen illustrations. For the first time, a full assessment is made of the challenge which Willem I faced as king of a country hastily cobbled together by the Congress of Vienna, and of his achievement in assembling, equipping and training 30,000 men from scratch in 18 months. 9781612003320, $32.95, $21.50, hardback, 208p.

A chapter is dedicated to the Team Train which, although not being a part of the artillery, deserves to appear in this vast panorama of the “Armes savantes”. This was the organization of Mr de Gribeauval, the Inspector of Artillery, set up slowly over nearly thirty years and which remained more or less as it was until 1825 and which is the object of these three volumes. 9782352504320, $24.95, $16.50, paperback, 80p.

The nickname dragoon actually appeared later, under the reign of Henri III, and designates as well mounted arquebusiers, carabiniers and musketeers. Volume 2 1750-1762 Ludovic Letrun and Veronique Letrun In this second half of the 18th century, military tactics changed, going from static siege tactics to rapid maneuvers, giving the cavalry a predominant role again on the field of battle. The changes in uniform, organization and tactics of the Dragoon regiments evolved over three periods. The main corps gradually joined with the cavalry, becoming a key element in the new strategy of movement. The first period, included ordinances from 1750 and 1757, and mainly improved the troop’s comfort. The second period of change reorganized and unified the corps. Finally the last period provided the republic with the most modern corps and army in the world. 9782352504238, $24.95, $16.50, paperback, 90p.

He was thus able to recreate every step of the battle as authoritatively as anyone could, dispelling myths and falsehoods along the way. 9781612002149, $32.95, $21.50, hardback, 408p.

Richmond Shall Not Be Given Up The Seven Days’ Battles, June 25-July 1, 1862 Doug Crenshaw In the spring of 1862, the largest army ever assembled on the North American continent landed in Virginia, on the peninsula between the James and York Rivers, and proceeded to march toward Richmond. Between that army and the capital of the Confederate States of America, an outnumbered Confederate force did all in its feeble power to resist—but all it could do was slow, not stop, the juggernaut. Federal commander Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan found himself unexpectedly hammered by a newly aggressive, newly emboldened foe. For seven days, Lee planned ambitious attacks and launched them, one after another, hoping not just to drive Federals from the gates of Richmond but to obliterate them entirely. In Richmond Shall Not Be Given Up, historian Doug Crenshaw follows a battle so desperate that, ever-after, soldiers would remember that week simply as The Seven Days. 9781611213553, $14.95, $9.99, paperback, 192p.
