Stone Axe Studies III Edited by Vin Davis and Mark Edmonds Explores the current state of stone axe research in Britain and abroad. • Examines stone axes from a novel and innovative perspective • Collects work from a group of international scholars • Newly printed into paperback following the success of the hardback edition (2011) This volume builds upon the model of the first Stone Axe Studies volume published in 1979. It explores how scholars from various parts of the world currently approach these distinctive items. Some papers are united by specific material, such as those working on Jadeite axe blades in western and Central Europe. For others, the link is analytical (e.g., the development of new geochemical techniques), contextual (e.g., work on techniques of hafting or on patterns of deposition) or conceptual (e.g., the uses made of ethno-historic and related models). Taken together, the twentyseven papers in this volume document the state of the art in stone axe research from Britain, at the same time providing a much-needed basis for comparative study and for debate regarding analytical and interpretative issues. As a whole, these papers examine every aspect of stone axes from the quarrying of their raw materials through to their practical use, their significance and their symbolism. What emerges is a dynamic and in-depth picture of stone tools from Norway to India and Papua New Guinea, and from the Neolithic to the twenty-first century.

Labouring with Large Stones A Study into the Investment and Impact of Construction Projects on Mycenaean Communities in Late Bronze Age Greece
By Yannick Boswinkel Provides insights into Mycenaean building processes, their labour costs, and their economic impact. This book explores the cost, expressed in labour, of constructing fortifications during the Late Bronze Age in Greece (ca. 1600–1050 BCE). The underlying question addressed by this study is whether the cost of large-scale constructions may have overstretched the (economic) capabilities of communities, leading to their collapse. The study provides both simplified numerical representations of costs and elaborate comparisons to put these costs into context. In Bronze Age Europe, an enormous amount of metalwork was deliberately buried in the ground and never retrieved. This book delves into this practice to gain a better understanding of these ideas and conventions. By systematically investigating the objects and places that people selected for metalwork depositions, the logic behind the practice of selective metalwork deposition is unravelled. Egyptian Delta Archaeology Short Studies in Honour of Willem van Haarlem
Edited by Ben van den Bercken (University of Amsterdam) Short studies concerning Egyptian Nile Delta related excavations and museum objects. • Features contributions from archaeologists, Egyptologists and museum curators • Utilises previously unpublished materials from excavations and museums • Provides a window into the everyday life in Ancient Egypt by exploring aspects of Egyptian Delta archaeology If you want to understand ancient Egypt, the Nile Delta is of key importance. Excavations and surveys in the Delta keep unearthing new information about how the ancient Egyptians lived, how they envisaged the afterlife and how they interacted with other cultures. The study of finds from the Delta gives us a glimpse into the beliefs and everyday life of the ancient Egyptians. From 1979 to 2014 Willem van Haarlem worked on several archaeological sites in the Nile Delta, focusing on the excavations at Tell Ibrahim Awad in the eastern Delta from 1991 onward. At the same time he was curator of Egyptian Antiquities at the Allard Pierson, the heritage collections of the University of Amsterdam. On the occasion of his retirement a number of archaeologists, Egyptologists and museum curators have written a series of short studies in his honour, varying from current excavation results from Delta sites to new or renewed research into museum objects from this region. This book offers a rich palette of subjects to scholars interested in Delta archaeology and above all provides hitherto unpublished materials from excavations and museum depots that will inspire the next generation of Nile Delta scholars. Menschenköpfige Herzskarabäen im Kontext Archäologie, Philologie und Kulturgeschichte
By Markus Wallas Examines the phenomenon of human-faced heart scarabs from a variety of perspectives. Heart scarabs are inscribed with spell 30B from the Book of the Dead and are usually depicted with a beetle head, but a very small number of such amulets show the scarab with a human face or head. One of these extraordinary objects was found during recent excavations in Zawyet Sultan, Middle Egypt. Based on the analysis and discussion of this newly excavated object, this publication sheds new light on the context of human-faced heart scarabs from a philological, archaeological and historico-cultural perspective. Rome and the Colonial City Rethinking the Grid
Edited by Sofia Greaves (University of Cambridge) and Andrew WallaceHadrill (University of Cambridge) New perspectives on the ideals and aims articulated by ancient city founders and their successors. According to one narrative, the orthogonal grid was the most important development of ancient town planning. This book explores the shortcomings of the colonialist narrative and offers new perspectives. It explores the ideals articulated both by ancient city founders and their modern successors; and it looks at the many ways post-Roman urbanism looked back to the Roman model with a constant re-appropriation of the idea of the Roman. Roman Religion in the Danubian Provinces Space Sacralisation and Religious Communication during the Principate (1st–3rd century AD)
By Csaba Szabó (University of Lucian Blaga) An innovative study of the transmission of Roman religious ideas and practices to the northern provinces. The Danubian provinces represent one of the largest macro-units within the Roman Empire, with a large and rich heritage of Roman material evidence. This book presents the material evidence of Roman religion in the Danubian provinces through a new, paradigmatic methodology, focusing not only on the traditional urban and provincial units of the Roman Empire, but on a new space taxonomy. Combining methodological approaches of Roman provincial archaeology and religious studies, this work provokes a dialogue between disciplines rarely used together in central-east Europe and beyond. Bridge Over Troubled Water: The Roman Finds from the River Tees at Piercebridge in Context By Hella Eckardt and Philippa J. Walton An entire riverine artefact assemblage analysed and published for the first time. When Roman objects are discovered in rivers they are commonly interpreted as accidental losses or as rubbish deposits revealed by fluvial erosion; this contrasts with prehistoric assemblages, which are often seen as ritual offerings. This study challenges these assumptions by and comparing its composition to nearby excavated assemblages. The ca. 3,600 finds retrieved by two divers from the River Tees at Piercebridge are also related to the Roman bridges, settlement, and fort. The Marriage Bed of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York A Masterpiece of Tudor Craftsmanship
Edited by Peter N. Lindfield (Manchester Metropolitan University) An extensive multi-disciplinary study of the marriage bed of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. • Expands upon research presented at a 2019 conference held at the V&A • Examines a unique example of surviving secular domestic furniture from the period • The bed is an object of great public interest, featuring in published articles and even popular Youtube videos The Henry VII and Elizabeth of York marriage bed, rediscovered in 2010, is an exceptional piece of late medieval English royal furniture: no other equivalent example of secular domestic furniture is known to have survived, and precious little woodwork from this period remains outside of ecclesiastical settings. As a tour-de-force of medieval royal woodwork, the bed offers an unprecedented insight into elite domestic furniture from this period. Emerging from a decade-long multidisciplinary research project, this book is the first sustained account of the bed: it shows how numerous disciplines covering the arts and conservation sciences can be brought together to assess and interpret such rare historic survivals. Broken down into thematic chapters, the book explores the bed's form and structure, context, iconography, wood, paint, physical history, provenance and relationship with known surviving Tudor furniture, as well as Georgian and Victorian Gothic Revival beds. Although once thought to be a nineteenth-century fake, this book presents historical, archival and scientific evidence to show, beyond doubt, the bed’s late medieval age. Written by a range of scientists, historians and specialist researchers, this volume is a multi-disciplinary work of immeasurable value to readers from numerous disciplines. Beautiful Bodies Gender and Corporeal Aesthetics in the Past
Edited by Uroš Matić (Austrian Academdy of Sciences) Explores the role of material culture in the formation of beauty ideals in past societies. • Innovative multi-disciplinary approaches use case studies from archaeology, art, burial evidence, iconography and literature • Examines gender identity and differentiation in past societies through specific aspects of material culture • Shows how textual and material evidence provide considerable but often subtle information and implications on societal concepts The concept of beauty has been one of interest for much of our history, but it is only in recent times that archaeologists have begun to approach it as a culturally contingent and socially constructed phenomenon. While both archaeologists and ancient historians have dealt extensively with gender, it is rarely dealt with in relation to the concept of beauty. This book explores beauty not for the sake of beauty, but as a tool that serves to form gender norms and keep them in place. By examining the role of material culture in the creation of beauty ideals and corporeal aesthetics in past societies, it shows bodily aesthetics and related gender norms from a cultural relativism perspective. The contributors deal with different intersections of gender and corporeal aesthetics by utilising rich archaeological, textual and iconographic data from ancient Sumer, Aegean Bronze Age, ancient Egypt, ancient Athens, Roman provinces, the Viking world and the Qajar Iran. As a whole, this volume shows how ‘beauty’ can be used as an analytic concept for a better understanding of societies both past and present. Cities as Palimpsests? Responses to Antiquity in Eastern Mediterranean Urbanism
Edited by Elizabeth Key Fowden (University of Cambridge), Suna Çaǧaptay (University of Cambridge), Edward Zychowicz-Coghill (University of Cambrdige) and Louise Blanke (University of Edinburgh) Explores the historical complexity and cultural hybridity of post-classical eastern Mediterranean cities. The metaphor of the palimpsest has been increasingly invoked to conceptualise cities with deep, living pasts. This book examines the logic of the palimpsest, asking whether this fashionable trope slyly forces us to see contradiction where local inhabitants saw (and see) none and to impose distinctions that satisfy our own assumptions about historical periodisation and cultural practice, but which bear little relation to the experience of ancient, medieval or early modern persons. Exploring Archaeoastronomy A History of its Relationship with Archaeology and Esotericism
By Liz Henty (University of Wales Trinity Saint David) A fascinating account of the development archaeoastronomy, its impact and its future.
of
• The first title to chart the development of the discipline of archaeoastronomy and its impact on archaeological theory and practice • Examines the contribution of archaeoastronomy to our interpretation of past human behaviour • Considers the discipline's future development within the field of archaeology Archaeoastronomy and archaeology are two distinct fields of study that both examine the cultural aspect of societies, but from different perspectives. Archaeoastronomy seeks to discover how the impact of the skyscape is materialised in culture, by alignments to celestial events or sky-based symbolism; yet by contrast, archaeology's approach examines all aspects of culture, but rarely considers the sky. Despite this omission, archaeology is the dominant discipline while archaeoastronomy is relegated to the sidelines. This book examines the reasons for archaeoastronmy’s marginalised status by addressing its history within the context of other contemporaneous developments, particularly in archaeology. While the discipline of archaeology has had an unbroken lineage from the late 19th–century to the present, archaeoastronomy has adopted various different names, such as alignment studies, orientation theory, astro-archaeology, megalithic science, archaeotopography, archaeoastronomy and cultural astronomy. In 2015, there was a proposal to integrate archaeoastronomy research with that of archaeology and call it skyscape archaeology. This volume examines how all these different variants came about and considers archaeoastronomy's often troubled relationship with archaeology and its appropriation by esotericism, to shed light on its position today. Settling with the norm? Norm and Variation in Social Groups and their Material Manifestations in (Roman) Iron Age (800 BC–AD 300) Settlement Sites of the Northern Netherlands
By Karen M. de Vries A study into norm and variation in housebuilding and deposition practices. When studying later prehistoric societies, it is evident that shared practices, as well as variations, exist in the settlement record. Traditionally, the emphasis has been on the elements shared on large scales, while variations in material culture have received little attention. In this book, housebuilding practices, general deposition practices and special deposition practices from (Roman) Iron Age (800 BC–AD 300) settlements in the northern Netherlands are studied on different scales as practices that can be similar and different at the same time. Pastfinders The Roots of Danish Archaeology
Edited by Rubina Raja (Aarhus University) and Søren M. Sindbæk (Aarhus University) Examines the history of archaeology in the 19th and early 20th centuries in Denmark. It is widely agreed that the birth of modern archaeology happened in Denmark in the 19th century. This anthology aims to demonstrate that the early Danish pioneers saw little distinction between the study of classical antiquity, the middle ages, prehistory, ethnography and human evolution, nor between humanities and natural sciences. The contributions show how Danish scholars remained key actors and delivered pioneering achievements in the archaeology of Europe, the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Tracing Textile Production from the Viking Age to the Middle Ages Tools, Textiles, Texts and Contexts
By Ingvild Øye (University of Bergen) Examines textile production in Norway from the Viking period to High Middle Ages. • First comprehensive study of textiles preserved in graves of the Viking period to High Middle Ages on the north Atlantic fringe • Considers textile production in terms of annual cycles of animal husbandry and crop management against the background of landscape, climate and regional variation • Provides insight into the organisation and modes of production of textiles during this period This book concerns textile production at the fringes of north-western Europe – areas in western Norway and the North Atlantic in the expanding, dynamic and transformative period from the early Viking Age into the Middle Ages. Textiles constitute one of the basic needs in human life – to protect and keep the body warm but also to show social status and affiliations. Textiles had a wide spectrum of use areas and qualities, fine and coarse in various contexts, and in the Viking Age not least related to the production of sails – all essential for the development and character of the period. So, what were the tools and textiles like, who made them, who used them and who exposed them? By tracing textile production from the remains of tools and textiles in varied landscapes and settings – Viking Age graves and in-situ workplaces from the whole period – and combining this with textual insights, many layers of information are exposed about technology and qualities as well as gender, gender roles, social relations, power and networks. By combining tools, textiles and texts in various settings, this book contextualises dispersed archaeological finds of tools and textiles to uncover patterns across larger areas and in a long-term perspective of half a millennium.

MARITIME ARCHAEOLOGY
Maritime Archaeology on Dry Land Special sites along the coasts of Britain and Ireland from the first farmers to the Atlantic Bronze Age
By Richard Bradley (Reading University) Examines the archaeology of surviving shorelines in Britain and Ireland in prehistory. • Examines attitudes towards the sea before ships, contrasting evidence from four distinct phases • Includes evidence from largely forgotten 19th- and early 20th-century sites • Considers the sites and their changing roles in the wider context of trade, travel and settlement during the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age This book is about two islands off the coast of Continental Europe, the seas that surrounded them, and the ways in which they were used over a period of 3000 years. Instead of the usual emphasis on finds in the intertidal zone, it focuses on parts of Britain and Ireland where traces of the prehistoric shoreline survive above sea level. Using a combination of evidence from nineteenth– and early twentieth–century investigations as well as much more recent studies, this book explores the distinctive archaeology of a series of coastal locations. As well as examining the sites through the artefacts found there and reconstructions of the prehistoric coastline, it also considers their role in the wider pattern of settlement and their relationship to major monuments. This allows exploration of how the character of coastal sites changed in parallel with developments in maritime technology and trade. While the main emphasis of the book is the use of the seashore in the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age, the archaeology of the Middle and Later Bronze Age provides a source of comparison and wider temporal context for the book’s studies and conclusions.

Dynamic Epigraphy New Approaches to Inscriptions
Edited by Eleri H. Cousins (Lancaster University) Explores creative new approaches to epigraphy aiming to push the boundaries of the discipline. • Covers wide geographical and temporal range, from Republican Rome to early modern Scotland • Multi-disciplinary approaches to the integration of epigraphic material with archaeological data and early written source materials • Case studies range from the application of phenomenological approaches to the social context of epigraphic texts and their role as a specific linguistic device This volume, with origins in a panel at the 2018 Celtic Conference in Classics, presents creative new approaches to epigraphic material, in an attempt to 'shake up' how we deal with inscriptions. Broad themes include the embodied experience of epigraphy, the unique capacities of epigraphic language as a genre, the visuality of inscriptions and the interplay of inscriptions with literary texts. Although each chapter focuses on specific objects and epigraphic landscapes, ranging from Republican Rome to early modern Scotland, the emphasis here is on using these case studies not as an end in themselves, but as a means of exploring broader methodological and theoretical issues to do with how we use inscriptions as evidence, both for the Greco-Roman world and for other time periods. Drawing on conversations from fields such as archaeology and anthropology, philology, art history, linguistics and history, contributors also seek to push the boundaries of epigraphy as a discipline and to demonstrate the analytical fruits of interdisciplinary approaches to inscribed material. Methodologies such as phenomenology, translingualism, intertextuality and critical fabulation are deployed to offer new perspectives on the social functions of inscriptions as texts and objects and to open up new horizons for the use of inscriptions as evidence for past societies.

Papers of the Langford Latin Seminar 18 Roman Poetry, Republican and Imperial
Edited by Francis Cairns (Florida State University) Reflects new interest in Latin poetry from the earlier Republican period. After a long period in which the late Republican and Augustan poets were the focus of scholarship in Latin poetry, more attention is now being given to earlier Republican literature and the poets of the ‘Silver Age’. This volume reflects this changing perspective with five papers devoted to Augustan poets (Horace, Propertius, the Ovid of the Metamorphoses); two papers on early and later Republican epic; and five examining aspects of later JulioClaudian and Flavian authors: Seneca the Younger, Silius Italicus, Martial, and Statius. The Quran: Key Word Collocations Adjectives, Nouns, Proper Nouns and Verbs
By Elie Wardini This series presents the Quran as raw data with as little interpretation as possible. The digital text used for this purpose is the Uthmani text of the Tanzil Quran Text. 'Collocation' is defined as a Key Word, here adjectives, nouns, proper nouns and verbs, forming the center of a cluster with four co-occurring Key Words (1° and 2° of proximity), the first two to the left and to the right, where available. Ausonius of Rome Grammar, Rhetoric, and the Establishment of a Christian Culture in the Late Roman West
By Lionel Yaceczko Examines the life and work of poet and scholar of rhetoric Ausonius. This volume describes the rich and complex world in which Ausonius (c. 310–395) lived and worked, from his humble beginnings as a schoolteacher in Bordeaux, to the heights of his influence as quaestor to the Emperor Gratian, at a time of unsettling social and religious change. Guided by Marrou’s critical insights to both his own time and place and that of Ausonius, this book proposes a hermeneutic for reading Ausonius as both a 4th-century poet and a fascinating mirror for his 20th-century counterparts. Analyses a newly discovered theological treatise. Examines a recently identified sixteenth–century treatise on 'Nestorianism' written by Francisco Ros S.J. (1559-1624), a Catalonian from the Jesuit province of Aragón. Studies in the Evolution and Formation of the Passover Haggadah By Jay Rovner Explores the development of the section of the Passover Haggdah known as maggid. The Passover Haggadah, the quintessential Jewish book, began taking shape in the period of the Mishnah and the Talmud (ca. 100–600 CE). Even by 600, it did not look like it does today. Many portions were incorporated in the Geonic period (600–900 CE). Such selections completed the Haggadah, producing the book used at Passover Seders to the present day. This study explpres how the section of the Passover Haggdah known as maggid ('recounting') achieved its comprehensive structure and contents during this period. By Silviu Bunta Investigates early Jewish experiences of God. This book moves forward from categorical and definitional approaches to the literature of early Judaism to examine early Jewish experiences of God. With this change, the symbolic language of early Jewish texts gives sharper contours to a pre-formal theology, a theology in which God and divinity are more subjects of experience and recognition than of propositions.
