The sources of pigments used in European painting are found in classical antiquity, 1st. century B.C. to 1st century A.D. The over 40 pigments in use were described by Vitruvius, Pliny the Elder and Dioscorides, complemented by 3rd century B.C. Theophrastus. The pigments in the four extant treatises are described in full which, together with the artistic principles, make this little book a basic primary source for both classical painting and subsequent European painting.

Treatises on painting between the 1st and the 12th centuries A.D. May have been many but those preserved are found in two manuscripts from the 10th and 12th centuries: the Mappae Clavicula and Eraclius – both of which probably date from c. 8th century. This handbook includes the earliest known recipes for vermilion (c. 3rd century A.D.). The cover and 4 plates are from the only unrestored wooden ceiling paintings which are found in St Martin’s Church, Zillis, Switzerland, of 1110.

A French collection of recipes for painting on parchment, On Making Colours, by a painter, Peter of St. Plates and illustrations have been included in this handbook, bringing together a treatise and a book which May have derived from the same place, an exceptional event in the history of pigments. Notable is the reference to painting in oil on panel, artists of the French school responsible for the London, Westminster Abbey Retable of 1280, also painted in oil on panel.

From Italy to France to Flanders, the arts of painting in the 14th century were practiced in manuscript illumination, on panel, and in fresco. Recipes for pigments appropriate to all these arts are included in this collection. “Experiments upon Colours” were dictated by painters to a Frenchman, Jehan Alcherius, while the Italian artist, Cennino Cennini, was especially attentive to the practice and the pigments to be used in fresco painting in The Book of Art / Il Libro dell’ Arte, of c. 1390.

15th century Italian painting mastered the art of painting light in the world. As Leon Battista Alberti wrote in On Painting (1435), "light has the power to vary color", hence a rich palette of pigments and how to mix colors was necessary to capture every nuance. Countless recipes are provided by the anonymous author of "Secrets for Colours" (c. 1450), called the Bolognese Manuscript, intended for use in fresco and in oil on panel, accompanied by instructions on how to make varnishes for paintings.

Three texts by two Italian Renaissance painters – Leonardo da Vinci and Gian Paolo Lomazzo – and a compendium of the 53 standard pigments commonly found on artists’ palettes for painting in oil on panel and on canvas as outlined by the writer, Raffaello Borghini, make up this 16th century collection of pigments. Leonardo’s studio advice on the use of colors for capturing light and dark picks up this theme from Italian 15th century and classical painting and lays the foundation for this practice as it would develop in European painting.

Ten 17th century writers described the pigments in use in their countries – England, Sweden, Flanders, France, Spain, and Italy. The theme of their treatises was studio practice and the pigments were discussed as they were set on the palette. Surprisingly, the method was the same – from light to dark, white to black. The 17th century palette was an international palette comprising just over 100 pigments. This book will be of interest to art historians, collectors, students, conservators, and museum-goers.

Pigments described by the English chemist, Robert Dossie, the French artists' colourman, Jean Félix Watin, and the London-based pigment maker, Constant de Massoul. 18th century European painting saw the introduction of new pigments to the painters’ palettes, from Prussian Blue to the early synthetics such as Patent Yellow. It was a century rich in pigments, the authors of the treatises listing over 150 pigments that could be bought in the shops in London and Paris.

34 Drawings (1920)

A collection of all the historical pigments mentioned in the treatises included in the series, Colour Palettes, by century, complemented by recipes from other contemporary sources. The entries define the pigment – color, its source (animal, plant, mineral) and its name – and describe its method of preparation, with historical remarks tracing the pigment through the centuries. Recipes provide the documentary history of the pigment beginning with the earliest known through to 1837, the date of George Field's, Chromatography, to make up a history of each pigment.

The Seeing Eye

A Theory of Creativity Cubism to Suprematism

Currently Available | Hardback | $40.00 | 978-0-94631-121-7 | 352 pages | NCR

A facsimile edition of Kazimir Malevich, SUPREMATISM 34 Drawings, was published in 1990 by Artists Bookworks accompanied by an introduction to the drawings by Patricia Railing; it is now out-of-print. This 2014 reprint of Malevich’s little book contains a new translation from the Russian and a new introductory text by Patricia Railing, “Reading the 34 Drawings”. The Russian text and plates were scanned from an original copy and the size of this little book conforms to the lithographed Russian edition of 1920.

This is the first study to investigate the sources of the creative processes in the painting of Kazimir Malevich, from Neo-Primitivism to Suprematism, 1911-1920. These sources are found in 19th century scientific investigations into optics, especially those of Hermann von Helmholtz, the artist adapting the laws of optical light and colour and the laws of optical structures of seeing in space and in depth to his painting. Malevich’s creative processes culminated in his non-objective canvases, Suprematism, between 1915 and 1920, the painting of pure seeing.

Collection of 30 texts, 19151928, & 3 facsimiles, some in first English translation, plus Nina Kogan on Cubism and Ilya Chashnik on Suprematism. Chronological sections trace Malevich’s analyses of Cubism and Futurism, the Supremus Society of Artists, Suprematism Triumphant, UNOVIS, Theory of Creativity as Artistic Culture, and the Non-Objective World of Sensations. A presentation of sensations from Cézanne to Suprematism is followed by a discussion of how consciousness and the environment influence artistic creativity in P. Railing, Malevich on Creativity.

IMPRESSIONISTS' PALETTES OF LIGHT Patricia Railing The French Impressionist painters discovered new means for painting light – they used a “solar palette”, the pigments matched to the colours the eyes see. They are the colours of a ray of light. This little book reproduces palettes by several of the plein-air painters, describes the pigments they used, and includes short excerpts by the scientists whose work was the foundation of the new painting – complementary colors, optical mixing, and the pigment-color correspondences. It closes with color swatches of the pigments, provided by the London artists’ colormen, L. Cornelissen & Son. This book will be of interest to art historians, collectors, students, conservators, and museum-goers. Spray For Peace

Retrospective 1977-2017

Raquel Natalicchio

Diana Shui-Iu Wong

My journey began when I was assigned to write an article on graffiti in Los Angeles and I realized the artist’s story wasn’t only about what they paint but why they paint. This book tells their stories in hopes to spread their message and shine a new light on how graffiti can be an ally for our society.

Wong’s most recent work ventures boldly into abstraction while grounded in nature and the elements. Her striking images, like color-flooded snapshots of the cosmos, explore universal questions about being and balance.

Raquel “Rocky” Natalicchio is an international photo journalist who is currently residing in Los Angeles, CA. Having been raised as a traveler, both living and traveling extensively, her style, personality, and ability to climb anything in her path have put her in the forefront of street and urban photography.

Lauren Mendelsohn Bass

May 2018 | hardcover | $60.00 | 978-0-99874-848-1 | 8.5 x 11

Taking a cue from the psychological drama of Film Noir, Lauren Mendelsohn-Bass weaves her own narrative through the painted word. Her emotional thrillers are stylistic and keen in plotlines that reveal the subtext of life. Her characters are staged in a series of montages, as form and gesture expose the mind’s inner turmoil of daily existence.

Lauren Mendelsohn-Bass is a Los Angelesborn painter who received her Bachelor of Arts at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her work depicts the psychology of the mind’s inner conflicts and struggles, portrayed through her figures’ outward appearance and gestures. She often emphasizes the psychological drama with a monochromatic, Film Noir feel in order to examine what makes us tick. 14

There is still a lack of visibility of specific identities within the LGBT and TNCQ communities and uncovering these identities will challenge the common stereotypes for what certain identities are expected to look like. It’s a powerful statement in visibility and diversity. The goal is to celebrate and encourage the expansion and public awareness of queer fluid expression. Notions of the nature and definition of gender, narrative, agency and expression and representation are examined.

Striking compositions, often humorous, dreamlike, or ironic, offer truly stunning visions one would never expect. As much as these images intrigue the senses, they also challenge the mind. Tales of Diving with the Bizarre and the Beautiful

Laser Sailing From Start To Finish

John Bantin

Tim Davison

The popular image of sharks is of a dorsal fin cleaving the surface as it rushes to its next kill, but this is a limited caricature. In this beautiful book, diving veteran John Bantin recounts many tales of his diving with several species of sharks and other marine animals. Accompanied by his own stunning photography, the captivating, and sometimes shocking encounters show the reader what it is like to get up close and personal to these beautiful creatures.

Targeted at the club sailor, The Laser Book covers the techniques and skills needed to succeed in Laser sailing, for those starting out through to those striving to win their Club Championship. Whatever your level, expert advice from author Tim Davison, plus contributions from Laser gold medalists, world champions and their coaches, will take your Laser sailing to the next level. Over 350 photographs show you exactly how it’s done and 50 diagrams illustrate key boat parts, the different points of sailing and complex on-the-water scenarios with clarity.

John Bantin has spent over twenty years traveling the world and diving. He has been Technical Editor of the long-established Diver magazine, and has been regularly published in Undercurrent magazine and DYK.

BLACK SABBATH SONG BY SONG Black Sabbath Song by Song

Steve Pilkington To commemorate the final retirement of Black Sabbath, lifelong devotee Steve Pilkington takes the reader through every song on every one of the band’s studio albums, taking in the highs and occasional lows, as well as looking at the cover artwork and stories behind the albums. He also discusses live recordings and DVD releases. The result will surely be regarded as the most exhaustive guide to the band’s music yet produced, as critical opinion rubs shoulders with facts, trivia and anecdotes to provide the ultimate guide to this legendary band. Whether you are a hard core fan, or simply want a guide to what lies beyond Paranoid, this book is for you.

STATUS QUO SONG BY SONG Graeme Stroud Formed in 1962, Status Quo first hit the charts in 1968 with ‘Pictures of Matchstick Men’. However, it wasn’t until they ditched their psychedelic duds and took on the denim, accompanied by a radical gear-shift from teenage-friendly pop to out-and-out electric boogie that they came into their own, defining the rock music genre for many throughout the 1970s. A raft of hugely successful albums followed that are still held in awe by an army of loyal fans; the release of Piledriver in 1972 heralded a purple patch in which twelve consecutive long-players charted in the UK top 10. Although Quo have gone on to post over sixty UK chart hits in no less than six separate decades, this publication focuses on those days of glory, song by song from their earliest recordings until the demise of the classic lineup. January 2018 | paperback | $24.95 | 978-1-78155-643-6 | 144 pages | 6.15 x 9.25 Graeme Stroud is a musician and writer, having played lead guitar in a number of bands since the 1980s and various instruments for his solo projects. MAKING SENSE OF MARILYN Andrew Norman The world continues to be fascinated with Marilyn Monroe who dazzled with her beauty and captivated the hearts of millions, worldwide, and yet, who died tragically at the age of only 36. Aside from the fact that Marilyn’s so-called autobiography cannot be relied upon, making sense of her is certainly problematical, not least because in her early years, she was insecure and introspective, and unable even to make sense of herself. With his medical background, the author is in a position to shed new light on the enigmatic character of Marilyn Monroe, this fascinating, yet deeply troubled, former Hollywood icon who is regarded, arguably, as the world’s most famous ever movie star.

CHRISTIAAN BARNARD The Surgeon Who Dared David K.C. Cooper MD, PhD, FRCS

January 2018 | hardback | $34.95 | 978-1-78155-639-9 | 356 pages | 6.15 x 9.25

From humble beginnings as a ‘barefoot boy’ in a small town in the heart of South Africa, Chris Barnard learned to mix with presidents and prime ministers, with royalty and popes, and quickly embraced the high-life of the jet-set who surrounded him. As a surgeon he pursued his goals in heart surgery despite a lifetime of pain from arthritis and a disability from asthma, which might eventually have killed him. Having established the first major heart surgery program in Africa, he eventually became distracted by other interests until he was a mere shadow in his own department. Yet he remained in the public eye through his gifts for public speaking and as a writer. He was a charismatic and controversial man who dared to carry out the world’s first human heart transplant in December 1967. Can we summarize Chris Barnard? Not very easily. He was a first-class doctor— skilled, knowledgeable, compassionate, conscientious, concerned, decisive, and wise. He was an inquiring and innovative surgeon—though famously irascible in the operating room—with a vision of the future developments in his chosen field and the ability, judgment, and courage to play a part in contributing to those developments. He was an informative and highly entertaining speaker and raconteur, a gifted writer, farmer, restaurateur, an unofficial ambassador for his country—and a good friend. Here, David Cooper draws on his personal knowledge of Chris Barnard, with whom he remained friends until the latter’s death in 2001, and on his great experience in the field of heart transplantation, which involved him for 17 years.

Dr. David Cooper studied medicine at Guy’s Hospital Medical School. He worked with Chris Barnard for many years. Currently, he is co-director of the xenotransplantation program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

VITAL REMAINS Winston Wicomb, the Heart Transplant Pioneer Apartheid Could Not Stop Amos van der Merwe and Winston Wicomb In the dark years of apartheid, a boy grew up in a household with a terrible secret: although they were all of mixed origins, they had managed to ‘pass as white.’ Young Winston Wicomb, however, was far too dark to fit in and had to be hidden whenever someone knocked on their door. After struggling through school and even managing to obtain an university degree, he still remained unemployed due to his skin color. To make ends meet, he serviced cars in their backyard but never stopped dreaming about escaping the restraints of Apartheid. Then fate intervened. While distributing pamphlets advertising his mechanical skills, he found Professor Chris Barnard stranded next to the road. He offered to help even though he had no experience with the new Mercedes the professor drove. Barnard, surprised at the success of Winston’s efforts and impulsive as ever, offered Winston a job in his research lab. It is here that Winston applied his knowledge and experience of matters mechanical to eventually produce the world’s first apparatus to transport a living heart over long distances. Vital Remains tells to story of an unlikely hero, a huge risk, achievement … and love.

Amos van der Merwe retired from medical practice to pursue a life-long dream of writing. Winston Wicomb has over sixty publications with the major focus of his work in heart preservation. Following a distinguished career where he served as a Principal Investigator of California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute, Department of Transplantation, San Francisco; Wicomb now serves as Director/Senior Scientist at the Infectious Disease Research Institute, Seattle, Washington. THE FLAVOURS OF ANDALUCIA Elisabeth Luard Winner of the 1992 Glenfiddich Award for Food Book of the Year. This is a cookery book with a strong travel bias, dealing with each of Andalucia’s eight provinces in turn to provide a personal, geographical and culinary survey of the area. It shows how the land itself and historical events have influenced the culinary tradition of the region, with its intriguing combination of hearty peasant fare and the delicate seasonings that are a legacy of the Moorish invasions. Each province draws on its own magnificent natural larder, and the recipes, such as hot gazpacho from Huelva, salt cod with potatoes and peppers from Jaén, pork and beans with chard from Seville, and chickpea and wheat soup from Almería, reflect this diversity. VANISHING VERNACULAR Western Landmarks Steve Fitch with a foreword by Toby Jurovics Steve Fitch is among America’s most well-known chroniclers of the American West since the days of Easy Rider. The story of the transport, known as “Kasztner’s Train” that carried 1,676 Jewish men women and children from Budapest and its environs out of immediate danger, and eventually to freedom is one of the most compelling and thought-provoking episodes of the Holocaust. Among those on that train, along with his mother and uncle, was eight-yearold Imi Mandel. The story of how he came to be included in that uncertain journey that traveled from Budapest to the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp, and after six months, on to freedom in Switzerland is but one part of the tale told here by Mandel’s friend, Terry Horowitz.

In One Humpy Grumpy Camel Humpy Grumpy appears with a whole new cast of characters – five silly billy goats, eight baby scorpions and nine busy beetles, 13 wise old men and 14 dancing girls, and many more characters – all of whom make counting fun for every child. Told in verse, the book is illustrated with watercolor images of Arabian life from sunrise to sunset – the leafy palm trees and desert foxes, the incense burners and glowing lanterns.

The landscape of this dark story is the ancient world of Assyria some 3000 years ago, a time when writing was in the world’s oldest script, cuneiform, and the domination of unseen forces firmly in the hands of the state’s leading Exorcist. The author uses his familiarity with ancient writings preserved in the world’s museums to recreate a vanished world in which those who step from the shadows in ruthless violence to pursue ultimate control show themselves at the same time to be disconcertingly human. The tight prose and graphic illustrations make this a gripping and unusual tale not of this world.

THE RHYTHM OF THE PEN AND THE ART OF THE BOOK Islamic Calligraphy from the 13th to the 19th Century Andrew Butler-Wheelhouse

Currently Available | Paperback | $40.00 | 978-1-91130-034-2 | 120 pages | 9.7 x 11.9

This lavishly illustrated volume takes the reader through a journey of some six centuries of development of the refined arts of calligraphy and illumination in the Islamic world. Much has been written on the dawn and early stages of the development of Arabic script and the position of calligraphy as an art form within Islamic civilization. This catalogue seeks to follow this story further into the golden age of Islamic calligraphy and its appreciation and patronage as the chief form of artistic expression from Islamic Spain to China. The works of art carefully selected for this catalogue, which accompanies an exhibition at the prestigious Sam Fogg gallery in London, follow the impact of the introduction of paper into the Islamic world and its effect on both the quality and the scope of the calligraphic art form. Paper – rather than parchment – allowed for inscriptions to be penned on a massive scale, and one of the highlights here is a monumental half line from the so-called ‘Baysunghur’ Qur’an, which was probably the largest Qur’an manuscript commissioned by an imperial court.

Andrew Butler-Wheelhouse is an Islamic expert at the Sam Fogg gallery.

FRA ANGELICO Heaven on Earth Nathaniel Silver

April 2018 | hardback | $45.00 | 978-1-91130-039-7 | 250 pages | 9.4 x 11

Accompanying the exhibition at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston, this catalog explores one of the most important artists of the Renaissance. Fra Angelico (c. 1395–1455) transformed painting in Florence with pioneering images, rethinking popular compositions and investing traditional Christian subjects with new meaning. His altarpieces and frescoes set new standards for quality and ingenuity, contributing to Angelico’s unparalleled fame on the Italian peninsula. With the intellect of a Dominican theologian, the technical facility of Florence’s finest craftsmen and the business acumen of its shrewdest merchants, he shaped the future of painting in Italy and beyond. The exhibition reunites for the first time Fra Angelico’s four reliquaries for Santa Maria Novella (1424-34; Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and Museo di San Marco, Florence). Together they cover key episodes in the life of the Virgin Mary and capture in miniature some of his most important compositional innovations. Assembled at the Gardner with exceptional examples of Angelico’s narrative paintings from collections in Europe and the United States, this exhibition explores his celebrated talents as a storyteller and the artistic contributions that shaped a new ideal of painting in Florence.

Nathaniel Silver is Associate Curator of the Collection, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. At the Gardner he cocurated Ornament and Illusion: Carlo Crivelli of Venice and Beyond Words: Italian Renaissance Books, recently awarded a prize for “outstanding exhibition” by the AAMC. John was educated at the Slade School of Art in London in the 1890s, where the onus of teaching was on the daily life class and a close study of the Old Masters. He soon emerged as a wonderfully gifted draughtsman. Dividing his life between England, Wales and France, and reaching his prime in the years immediately before the outbreak of the Great War, by 1910 John would be likened to a British Gauguin, a Welsh Post-Impressionist using bold colors and a willfully naïve and primitive style to explore the complex combination of romanticism, escapism and alienation engendered by 20th-century life. The great American collector John Quinn considered John and his sister Gwen key European artists, and his work would be included in the influential Armory Show in New York in 1913. After the War he would become Britain’s leading society portraitist, earning a fortune in commissions. Published to coincide with exhibitions at Poole Museum in Dorset in the summer of 2018 and at Salisbury Museum in Wiltshire in the summer of 2019, this book reexamines the life and work of this significant but increasingly overlooked British artist. Focusing on around sixty works drawn from private and public collections, including the Tate, the National Portrait Gallery and the National Museum of Wales, the book will offer new insights into John’s life and development as an artist from the late 1890s to the outbreak of the Second World War.

KÄTHE KOLLWITZ IN DRESDEN Petra Kuhlmann-Hodick, Agnes Matthias, Alexandra von der Knesebeck and Hannelore Fischer

January 2018 | Paperback | $40.00 | 978-1-91130-030-4 | 184 pages | 11.8 x 12.6

Käthe Kollwitz is one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, and arguably the greatest female artist. Her undeniable talent soon established her as a leading printmaker in a profession then dominated by men, even though she was a fierce social critic and focused her aesthetic vision on women and the working class. Known for her total mastery of graphic art, Kollwitz is equally recognized for her work’s deep humanity and emotional power. This lavishly illustrated catalog accompanies a major exhibition to showcase the artist’s early work, self-portraits and relationship with her major patron, Max Lehrs, and is timed to coincide with the 150th anniversary of her birth. The Dresden Kupferstich-Kabinett, which has one of the greatest collections of prints and drawings in Europe, has particularly important and unique holdings of the work of the outstanding German graphic artist Käthe Kollwitz (1867–1945). Kollwitz formed a long association with Max Lehrs (1855–1938), a leading art historian and then the director of the Dresden Kupferstich-Kabinett, and Lehrs became Kollwitz’s discerning supporter. From 1898 Lehrs began buying Kollwitz’s work systematically – which, in the Germany of Kaiser Wilhelm II, was a remarkable thing for a man in his position to do, considering that she was a woman artist with marked socialist leanings. Lehrs went on to purchase more than 200 works for the Kupferstich-Kabinett, taking care to document their evolution. The Kupferstich-Kabinett holds a rich correspondence between Lehrs and the artist, which has been newly researched and analyzedworking class. Known for her total mastery of graphic art, Kollwitz is equally recognized for her work’s deep humanity and emotional power.

LIFE DEATH & REVELRY The Farnese Sarcophagus Christina Nielson In terms of antiquarian fame, the Farnese Sarcophagus – elaborately carved with satyrs and maenads gathering grapes – May be the most important work of art in the Gardner collection, and perhaps of its type in America. A large, rectangular coffin of Pentelic marble, the Farnese Sarcophagus was exported from Athens to the area of Rome in the late Severan period, between c. 222 and 235 AD. The carving of the satyrs and maenads was especially suited to the artistic tastes of Mannerist and Baroque Rome, providing one of the most elegant examples of Greek imperial optic elongation to have survived from ancient times. Published to accompany an exhibition at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston, this book offers a multi-disciplinary, multi-era look at this important monument. There are thousands more that could have been included but it’s a short book and we could only pick 100. Rethinking the Regency

Catherine Curzon

James Hobson

Once upon a time there were four kings called George who, thanks to a quirk of fate, ruled Great Britain for over a century. This book offers a chance to step back in time and meet the women who ruled alongside the Georgian monarchs, not forgetting Sophia Dorothea of Celle, the passionate princess who never made it as far as the throne. From lonely childhoods to glittering palaces, via family feuds, smallpox, strapping soldiers and plenty of scheming, these are the queens who shaped an era.

Here James Hobson challenges the long established view of high society during the Regency, and instead details an account of a society in change. Often upheld as a period of elegance with many achievements in the fine arts and architecture, the Regency era also encompassed a time of great social, political and economic upheaval. In this insightful social history the emphasis is on the life of the every-man, on the lives of the poor and the challenges they faced.

James Hobson has 25 years’ experience of teaching and reading about history. Now retired, he researches the social history of his specialist period, Britain c1790-c1837, and runs his successful blog on the Regency “about1816”.

Society's First Sex Offender

Nick Holland

Geoffrey Pimm

Guy Fawkes, born in York in 1570, is one of the key figures in British history, taking a central role in a plot that would have destroyed the ruling class and changed the nation forever. But just who was the real Guy Fawkes? In this new book, we take an exciting look at the flesh and blood person behind the myth. We find out what radicalized the man who was born a Protestant, and yet planned mass murder for the Catholic cause.

Samuel Pepys is popularly known as the founder of the modern navy, a member of the Royal Society and most of all, as a unique and frank diarist. Less well known is the fact that he was a serial sexual offender by modern standards; a voyeur, a groper and a rapist. Set against the London society of Charles II’s restoration, and extensively using Pepys’ own words, this book concerns his numerous extramarital affairs.

Geoffrey Pimm has a life-long interest in the seventeenth century. He lives in Buckinghamshire, UK. CASEMATE | IPM NEW TITLES CATALOG SPRING 2018

Unfortunate Wretches

In 1706 Channing was convicted of poisoning her husband and became the last woman to be burned at the stake in Dorset. In the last four decades of the Georgian era 131 women went to the gallows. What were their crimes? This book brings new insights into their lives and the events that led them to their deaths, and includes chapters on baby murder among domestic servants, counterfeiting, husband poisoning, as well as the infamous Eliza Fenning case.

From Magna Carta to the Battle of Britain

The Life and Murder of Henry, Lord Darnley

Simon Webb

Robert Stedall

All nations and peoples have a body of legendary tales and semi-historical episodes which explain who they are and help to define their place in the world. The British are no exception and in this book Simon Webb explores some of the most well-known episodes from British history; stories which tell the British about themselves and the country in which they live. It shows that much of what the British believe about their history has been either grossly distorted or is just plain wrong.

Lord Darnley cuts an infamous figure in Scottish and Tudor history and his murder at Kirk o’ Field in 1567 remains one of British history’s great, unsolved mysteries - solving whether Mary was implicated has taxed historians ever since. In this engaging and well-researched biography, Robert Stedall reexamines Darnley’s life and his murder. It is not to be missed; his investigation brings new light and compelling conclusions to a story surrounded by political betrayal, murder, falsified evidence and conspiracy.

Simon Webb is the author of a number of non-fiction books, ranging from academic works on education to popular history.

Better to Light a Candle

Very few authors can ever dream of coming close to the legacy left by AA Milne. He remains a household name in almost every corner of the globe thanks to a phenomenally popular collection of whimsical children’s stories. But Alan Alexander Milne never able enjoyed the fame and fortune they brought him. He died deeply resenting Pooh’s success, as far as he was concerned those stories were just such a tiny fraction of his literary work, but nothing else he produced came close in terms of public appreciation.

NUTRITION ON TRIAL Challenging conventional dietary beliefs Tim Noakes and Marika Sboros

June 2018 | paperback | $22.50 | 978-1-77609-261-1 | 384 pages | 9 x 6

In December 2010, Professor Tim Noakes was introduced to a low-carbohydrate way of eating that was contrary to everything he had been taught and was accepted as conventional nutrition ‘wisdom’. Having observed the benefits of the low-carb, highfat (LCHF) lifestyle first-hand, and after thorough and intensive research, Noakes enthusiastically revealed his findings to the South African public in 2012. The backlash from his colleagues in the medical establishment was as swift as it was brutal, and culminated in a misconduct inquiry launched by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). The subsequent hearing lasted well over a year, but Noakes ultimately triumphed, being found not guilty of unprofessional conduct in April 2017. In Nutrition on Trial, he and experienced journalist Marika Sboros provide the backstory to the HPCSA hearing and the science behind the LCHF/Banting diet. Noakes explains why he champions this lifestyle despite the constant persecution and efforts to silence him, and discusses at length what he has come to see as a medical and scientific omertà, a code of silence that discourages anyone in the profession from speaking out against the current dietary guidelines. Written in an accessible style, Nutrition on Trial is informative and eye-opening, and is a mustread for everyone who cares about health and nutrition.

Tim Noakes was awarded the Order of Mapungubwe (Silver) by the president of South Africa for ‘excellent contribution to the field of sport and the science of physical exercise’. In 2012, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the NRF for his contribution to sports science research. He is the author of several books, one of which, Lore of Running, is considered the global ‘bible’ of running. Tim founded The Noakes Foundation in 2012 to promote unbiased nutritional research into the effects of low-carbohydrate, high-fat diets on all aspects of human health. Marika Sboros, publisher and editor of, she started her journalistic career at the Rand Daily Mail is one of South Africa’s top writers on health and well-being. From bottle to bullet – a true account of South Africa’s captive lion industry

Eight strategy practices that give winning companies their edge

Richard Peirce

Tony Manning

Richard Peirce, veteran campaigner against shark abuse, tackles another controversy in this new book, that of lion breeding and canned hunting. Cubs are often taken from their mothers when only days old to promote repeat breeding, and are sold into the petting industry. This book tells the true stories of two male lions, Obi and Oliver, rescued from breeding farms. An investigatory road trip by the author uncovered horrifying facts about the industry.

From his 30 years as a top strategy consultant, Tony Manning has distilled a set of must-do strategy practices that apply to every company everywhere. These are the critical core. Busy executives are overwhelmed by management ideas that are often just a repeat of what’s already known. Manning has dug deep into the past 100 years or so of management thinking and practice to find what’s endured, what has been most influential, and what is must-do vs. nice-to-do.

Richard Peirce is best known as a shark conservationist and is chairman of the Shark Conservation Society and the Shark Trust. He has authored several books, including The Poacher’s Moon - an exposé of rhinopoaching; Giant Steps and many other titles.

As a land artist Strijdom van der Merwe uses the materials provided by the chosen site. His sculptural forms take shape in relation to the landscape. It is a process of working with the natural world using sand, water, wood, rocks, etc. He shapes these elements into geometrical forms that participate with their environment, continually changing until their final probable destruction. He observes the fragility of beauty while not lamenting its passing. What remains is a photographic image, a fragment of the imagination.

In his remarkably engaging and romantic style of writing, he tells of stories long forgotten, played out at the foot of the majestic Victoria Falls and along the banks of the Zambezi, the greatest river in Africa. As the Zambezi River twists and turns its way through the beautiful landscape, it is witness to prospecting, hunting, wars, and dreams; and hears of great men who explore the undiscovered land.

JOHN GOLDING Pure Colour Sensation Dr David Anfam

Currently Available | Paperback | $25.00 | 978-1-90119-247-6 | 64 pages | 9 x 11

First published to accompany the exhibition, John Golding: Pure Colour Sensation at Piano Nobile gallery, this fully color illustrated catalog showcases fifteen years of exceptional paintings by John Golding. Although an acclaimed art historian, Golding considered himself, first and foremost, a painter. His work features in prominent institutions such as the Tate, MoMA, the Scottish National Gallery, the British Council, and the Yale Center for British Art. Golding had numerous one-man shows in the UK and abroad, and also participated in many group exhibitions including international shows with his close friend Bridget Riley. He was appointed a CBE in 1992 and elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1994. The publication presents a survey of works from the 1970s and 1980. Golding’s work, although abstract, repeatedly returns to the human body. The monumental canvases and the tactile handling of paint through layering of pigment demand a visceral physical reaction from the viewer. Speaking in an interview for Artists’ Lives, Golding recollected that his turn to abstraction was in “recognition of what was happening in America in the 1950s…the most important thing going on in painting.” In his abstract paintings, both intimate and large in scale, Golding sought unadulterated formal brilliance, letting color and composition take prominence, “so that there is nothing getting between you and the pure color sensation.”

Dr David Anfam is Senior Consulting Curator of the Clyfford Still Museum, Denver, and Director of its Research Center. His diverse writings include Mark Rothko: The Works on Canvas – A Catalogue Raisonné (Yale University Press, 1998), which earned the 2000 Mitchell Prize for the History of Art.

WILLIAM CROZIER the Edge of the Landscape Riann Coulter, Katharine Crouan, Sarah Glennie, Mark Hudson and Sean Kissane

Currently Available | paperbak | $50.00 | 978-1-90119-248-3 | 144 pages | 11 x 12.5

First published to accompany major retrospective exhibitions at West Cork Arts Centre and the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), this full-color illustrated monograph explores William Crozier’s whole career, taking in the second half of the twentieth century. The catalogue is furnished with essays presenting new research by renowned art historians and curators, Illuminated by unpublished sources and personal memoirs. What emerges is a picture of the continuum that runs through all of Crozier’s work, revealing a fascinating narrative that, far from a story of transformation from darker, earlier imagery into the apparent hedonism of later landscapes, is one of continuity of purpose in Crozier’s mindset that connects 1950s Britain and Ireland with the concerns of the new millennium.Crozier consciously allied himself and his work with contemporary European art throughout the 1950s and 1960s, towards painters such as Jean Dubuffet, Pierre Soulages, Hans Hartung, and Nicolas de Staël. The landscape became the source of visceral paintings: for Crozier, ravaged landscapes symbolized the torment and fear of the postwar condition at the heart of existentialism. Only ten years separate these images of traumatized humanity from the luxuriantly colorful works inspired by the landscape of West Cork. His early skill as a colorist reaches its zenith in paintings that capture the essence and appearance of the West Cork landscape in ways immediately recognizable to the viewer, but they are also concerned to capture a landscape during a period of great physical and social change. Crozier believed that when painting the Irish landscape he must “Tell the truth. Say it simply.” TO ORDER:

Jan Lester Why learn about philosophy? Because it is the master subject; more fundamental than all of the others: it critically examines their fundamental assumptions and presuppositions. And without some grasp of philosophy one cannot be fully educated or even intellectually autonomous: one is the meme-marionette of unexamined traditions, fashions, and commonsense assumptions. Why learn about libertarianism? Because politics causes or exacerbates the very problems that it purports to solve, or it misperceives voluntary behavior and free markets as problems. Liberty is always preferable: its observance entailing self-ownership, private property, and consensual interactions. These bold claims are expounded and defended in the two dialogues in this book.

THE WHISTLE BLOWER Lady Joanna Seldon Whistle-blowers tend not to make themselves popular. Maurice Pappworth’s whistle was Human Guinea Pigs, the controversial book published in 1967 which examined unethical medical experimentation on humans, identified the researchers and institutions responsible, took the medical establishment by storm and provoked questions in Parliament. Brilliant, Jewish, already an outsider, Pappworth was recognized as the best medical teacher in the country. His exposés led eventually to stricter codes of practice for human experimentation and the establishment of the research ethics committees which remain in place today. Maurice Pappworth’s daughter, the late Joanna Seldon, re-assesses the importance of Human Guinea Pigs as a major milestone in the development of current medical research ethics. THE FOURTH EDUCATION REVOLUTION Sir Anthony Seldon The impact of Artificial Intelligence has hardly begun but its effect will become all too apparent over the next few years and nowhere more so than in the educational sector. Though it is a revolution that is well under way it is constantly changing and the full impact of its effect on all in education is yet to be felt. The prediction that in the near future all jobs May be replaced by intelligent robots has so far not been felt by those professions involved with personal interaction. The education sector is about to start to feel the impact.

February 2018 | paperback | $22.50 | 978-1-90868-495-0 | 156 pages | 5 x 7.8

The effect of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has already started with the improvement in educational technology; roll-calls, lesson enhancement, marking, and assessing have all been made easier. But AI will all too quickly develop adaptive data from such activities, exploiting statistics to mimic human reasoning to personalize the needs of an individual student - and then AI will morph into the role of intelligent tutor. Artificial Intelligence will move from better courseware to increasing levels of interaction with the learner. The impact of Artificial Intelligence has hardly begun but its effect will become all too apparent over the next few years and nowhere more so than in education. It is a revolution but one which will provide huge benefits to education. This books looks at the first three educational revolutions before turning to examine the impact of AI education for Primary Schools to Universities.

Now Vice-Chancellor of Buckingham University, Sir Anthony Seldon is the former head of one of the UK’s leading independent schools. He is regarded as one of the most authoritative high profile commentators on education and his views are frequently sought by the government and political parties. A champion of digital learning and of bridging the divide between state and independent sectors, he is also a pre-eminent political biographer and contemporary historian.

MISDEFENDING THE REALM Antony Percy This is the story of how the Soviet Union successfully infiltrated the UK government in the years leading up to WW2, and specifically when the USSR was an ally of Nazi Germany (August 1939 - June 1941). Historians have previously argued that this success was due to the existence of a Communist ‘super-mole’ within MI5, and that in the fight against Fascism, multiple indulgences towards communists were an unavoidable strategy. The reality was very different.

February 2018 | hardback | $45.00 | 978-1-90868-496-7 | 382 pages | 5 x 7.8

When a key Soviet defector warned of the deep insertion of agents within the corridors of power, the Comintern were obliged by the Hitler-Stalin pact to launch an aggressive counteroffensive in 1940. Britain’s Security Service was persuaded that the threat from communist subversion was minimal. When this most damaging espionage was detected, MI5’s officers engaged in an extensive cover-up to conceal their deficiencies. Exploiting recently declassified material and a broad range of historical and biographical sources, Antony Percy here reveals how the Soviet Union caught up so swiftly with Western expertise and weaponry, and so removed a key Western advantage over its Communist adversary as the Cold War ensued.

Antony Percy is an academic historian. This is his first book. 62

OCEAN LINERS An Illustrated History Peter Newall

April 2018 | hardback | $60.00 | 978-1-52672-316-1 | 192 pages | 9.5 x 10

Before the advent of the jet age, ocean liners were the principal means of transport around the globe. Though the ocean liner was born on the North Atlantic it soon spread to all the other oceans and in this new book the author addresses this huge global story. The account begins with Brunel’s Great Eastern and the early Cunarders, but with the rise in nationalism and the growth in empires in the latter part of the 19th century, the colonial powers of Spain, France and Germany soon established shipping lines of their own, and transpacific routes were opened up by Japanese and American lines. The golden age between the two world wars witnessed huge growth in liner traffic but then, though there was a postwar revival, the breakup of empires and the arrival of mass air travel brought about the swan song of the liner. Employing more than 250 stunning photographs, the author describes not just the ships and routes, but interweaves the technical and design developments, covering engines, electric light, navigation and safety, and accommodation. A truly unique and evocative book for merchant ship enthusiasts and historians.

PETER NEWALL has had a lifetime interest in merchant shipping and has written a number of books including two fleet histories on the Union-Castle and Orient lines, a centenary history of Mauretania and a photographic work on Cape Town shipping. His extensive collection of historic merchant shipping images has been used for this book.

Over the centuries poisonous plants have been used to remove garden pests, unwanted rivals and deceitful partners. They have also been used for their medicinal qualities, as rather dangerous cosmetics, even to help seduce a lover when perceived as an aphrodisiac. Death In The Garden is based on Michael Brown’s most popular talk. This title will appeal to gardeners, horticulturists, nature enthusiasts and anyone who holds an interest in this strange and enchanting corner of the garden. But be warned, many of these deathly plants May already be taking root in your very own garden… June 2018 | paperback | $34.95 | 978-1-52670-838-0 | 208 pages | 6 x 9 Michael J. A HISTORY OF BIRDS Simon Wills Even the most well-informed wildlife enthusiast will be entertained by the stories and fascinating facts in the beautifully illustrated book. Our ancestors hunted, tamed, worshipped and depicted birds, and even bestowed magical properties upon them. Why did ancient writers consider the sparrow a lustful creature? Which bird was killed and hung up to predict the weather? And what was an ‘arse-foot’? Wildlife photographer and history journalist Simon Wills explores the intriguing and at times bizarre stories behind our relationship with birds. If you enjoy wildlife, then this book is full of surprises. Pigeons were trained to carry messages in wartime, but could gulls be taught to hunt U-boats? And which American president’s parrot started swearing at his funeral?
